Abstract:The continuous change in the global climate has resulted in warmer temperatures and increased evaporation from soils. This situation mostly results in erratic rainfall amount and distribution, which eventually leads to the shortage of water. Drought has severe consequences on the livelihoods of human as it affects the health and wellbeing of crops and animals including farmers and communities that depend on agriculture for survival. Moreover, increased drought causes reduced crop yields and sometimes total crop failure, increased food costs, and food shortages, as well as greater wildfires resulting from rising temperatures. Genetic engineering of transgenic or simple breeding of plant tolerant genotypes were surrogate to tackling drought stress effects on plants. However, these methods have proved successful but come at high cost and often time consuming. The use of beneficial bacteria has emerged as a better and effective means of dealing with this problem. Plant growth promoting bacteria evolved certain strategies to tolerate drought, some of which are modifications in phytohormones, antioxidant defense, and the production of exopolysaccharides and osmolytes. An understanding of the mechanisms of action by beneficial bacteria against drought stress in plants can help to tackle this menace and also promote efficient agricultural productivity by improving crop yield, increasing food availability while reducing food costs.
