Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:Disulfide bonds are a significant motif in life and drug-delivery systems. In particular, steric hindrance and stereoscopic disulfide linkers are closely associated with the stability of antibody-drug conjugates, which affects the potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetics of drugs. However, limited availability and diversity of tertiary thiols impede the construction of steric and stereoscopic disulfides for cross-linkage in biochemistry and pharmaceuticals. Through modulating the mask effect of disulfurating reagents, we develop a facile and robust strategy for construction of diverse steric and stereoscopic disulfides via N-dithiophthalimides. The practical cross-linkage of biomolecules including amino acids, saccharides, and nucleosides with different drugs and fluorescent molecules is successfully established through hindered disulfide linkers.

Abstract:The development of a dynamic chemistry toolbox to endow materials dynamic behavior has been key to the rational design of future smart materials. The rise of supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry offers many approaches to the construction of dynamic polymers and materials that can adapt, respond, repair, and recycle. Within this toolbox, the building blocks based on 1,2-dithiolanes have become an important scaffold, featuring their reversible polymerization mediated by dynamic covalent disulfide bonds, which enables a unique class of dynamic materials at the intersection of supramolecular polymers and adaptable covalent networks. This Perspective aims to explore the dynamic chemistry of 1,2-dithiolanes as a versatile structural unit for the design of smart materials by summarizing the state of the art as well as providing an overview of the fundamental challenges involved in this research area and its potential future directions.

Intrinsically Photopolymerizable Dynamic Polymers Derived from a Natural Small Molecule

Abstract:Developing photopolymerizable polymeric materials offers many opportunities to process materials in a remote and controllable manner. However, most photopolymerizable technologies require the external introduction of photoabsorbing units, whereas designing intrinsically photopolymerizable polymers is still highly challenging. Here, we report that a natural small-molecule disulfide, thioctic acid, can be directly transformed into a poly(disulfides) network under the irradiation of visible light without any external additives. The resulting polymer network exhibits optical transparency, mechanical stretchability and toughness, ambient self-healing ability, and especially strong adhesive ability to different surfaces. The dynamic covalent backbones of the poly(disulfides) endow the depolymerization ability to recycle the material in a closed-loop manner. Abstract:Two disubstituted acetylenes bearing a vinyl group at one end (M1 and M2) were synthesized and polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst. The expected poly(disubstituted acetylenes) PDSAs (P1 and P2) were obtained in high yields. Both P1 and P2 have reactive vinyl groups on their side chains, thus they were used as precursors to be subsequently modified with a mercapto compound through the thiol-ene click reaction to produce the novel PDSAs (P1S and P2S) in good yield. The chemical structures of the polymers were carefully characterized by standard spectroscopic methods such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, NMR and FTIR techniques, and satisfactory data were collected. The post-polymerization modification of P1 took a long reaction time (3 days) to convert P1 to P1S because the ene-functionality at the end of side chain of P1 links to a saturated alkyl segment. By using an activated ene-functionality (alpha,beta-unsaturated vinyl), the modification of P2 to P2S took only 1 day under mild conditions. Moreover, the activated end-ene group allowed the post-polymerization modification of P2 by Michael addition, which was confirmed using butylamine as the representative amine compound and the characterization data indicated the validity of the expected P2N. The thermal analysis results indicated that the modified polymers were highly stable thermally with a decomposition temperature over at least 240 degrees C, except for P2N, which showed lower stability due to unstable imine groups. Meanwhile, it was found that the modified polymers P1S and P2S were fluorescent and showed similar emission efficiency to their precursors P1 and P2. These results indicated that the thiol-ene click reaction and Michael addition reaction are accessible routes for post-polymerization modification to generate novel functional PDSAs.

Abstract:The "thio-click" polymerization is a well-expanded concept of click polymerization. Among the click polymerizations, the thiol-yne click polymerization is less developed and still in its infancy stage. In general, UV light, elevated temperature, amine, or transition metal complexes is needed to catalyze the thiol-yne click polymerization, which greatly complicates the experimental operation and limits its application. In this work, a facile and powerful thiol-yne click polymerization was developed, which could be carried out under very mild conditions without using external catalyst. Simply mixing the aromatic diynes (1a-1e) and dithiols (2-4) with equivalent molar ratio in THF at 30 degrees C will readily produce soluble and regioregular functional poly(vinylene sulfide)s (PIa-PIe, PII, and PIII) with high molecular weights (M-w, up to 85 200) in excellent yields (up to 97%) after as short as 2 h. Furthermore, no double addition product of an ethynyl group was found. This catalyst-free thiol-yne click polymerization has remarkably simplified the reaction conditions and will facilitate the preparation of functional materials applied in diverse areas.

Abstract:Photoresponsive polymers have attracted extensive attention due to their tunable functionalities and advanced applications; thus, it is significant to develop facile <i>in situ</i> synthesis strategies, extend polymers family, and establish various applications for photoresponsive polymers. Herein, we develop a catalyst-free spontaneous polymerization of dihaloalkynes and disulfonic acids without photosensitive monomers for the <i>in situ</i> synthesis of photoresponsive polysulfonates at room temperature in air with 100% atom economy in high yields. The resulting polysulfonates could undergo visible photodegradation with strong photoacid generation, leading to various applications including dual-emissive or 3D photopatterning, and practical broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. The halogen-rich polysulfonates also exhibit a high and photoswitched refractive index and could undergo efficient postfunctionalizations to further expand the variety and functionality of photoresponsive heteroatom-containing polyesters.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Thiol-based click polymerization with remarkable advantages has been nurtured into a powerful technique for the preparation of sulfur-containing polymers. This chapter briefly summarizes the recent advances in the area. Thanks to the high reactivity of thiol, various thiol-based click polymerizations, including thiol-ene, thiol-yne, thiol-epoxy, thiol-isocyanate, and thiol-halogen click polymerizations, have been developed and found extensively applications in the synthesis of sulfur-containing polymers with advanced structures and diverse functional properties. Thiol-ene click polymerization can produce poly(thioether)s via a radical process or thiol-Michael addition process. Thiol-yne click polymerization, a complement of the former, can proceed in a bis-addition or mono-addition manner to furnish poly(thioether)s or poly(vinyl sulfide)s with different regio-/stereoregularity. Other thiol-based click polymerizations, including thiol-epoxy, thiol-isocyanate, and thiol-halogen click polymerizations, can be applied to prepare poly(β-hydroxythio-ether)s, poly(thiourethane)s, and poly(thioether)s. At last, the challenges and opportunities in this area are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Supramonomers refer to monomers fabricated via noncovalent interactions and can be polymerized through conventional covalent methods. In this article, we realized the fabrication of cross-linked supramolecular polymers through photo-initiated thiol-ene click reaction of quadruple hydrogen bonded supramonomers. It is found that the cross-linked supramolecular polymer has a higher critical polymerization concentration than the linear supramolecular polymer, because the orientation of the trifunctional monomer leads to cyclize at low concentrations. It is anticipated that this research can enrich the methodology of fabricating cross-linked supramolecular polymers and provide a new phenomenon to understand the self-assembling behavior of cross-linked supramolecular polymers. Abstract:In the past decades click chemistries including thiol chemistries have found wide applications in the synthesis of well-defined polymers. In this research, a click-declick strategy based on the oxidation of heteroaromatic thioethers and the substitution reactions between the oxidized groups and thiols, is proposed for the synthesis of the cleavable polymers. In proof-of-concept experiments, block copolymers (BCPs) and star-like polymers are synthesized by thiol-phenylsulfone substitution reactions, and heteroaromatic thioethers are produced at the junction points of the BCP chains or on the crosslinking sites of the star-like polymer. The thioethers can be oxidized to heteroaromatic sulfoxides or sulfones, depending on the oxidization condition. It is demonstrated that both sulfoxides or sulfones can have base catalyzed nucleophilic substitution reactions with thiols, leading to the cleavage of the polymers.

Abstract:A photoswitchable nitrogen superbase is utilized for the reversible spatiotemporal activation of dynamic bond exchange in a covalently cross‐linked polymer. The reorganization rate of the network structure is controlled by the exposure to UV or visible light, which enables advanced applications such as spatially resolved, reversible reshaping as well as micro‐imprinting over multiple steps. Dynamic covalent polymer networks exhibit a cross‐linked structure like conventional thermosets and elastomers, although their topology can be reorganized through externally triggered bond exchange reactions. This characteristic enables a unique combination of repairability, recyclability and dimensional stability, crucial for a sustainable industrial economy. Herein the application of a photoswitchable nitrogen superbase is reported for the spatially resolved and reversible control over dynamic bond exchange within a thiol‐ene photopolymer. By the exposure to UV or visible light, the associative exchange between thioester links and thiol groups is successfully gained control over, and thereby the macroscopic mechanical material properties, in a locally controlled manner. Consequently, the resulting reorganization of the global network topology enables to utilize this material for previously unrealizable advanced applications such as spatially resolved, reversible reshaping as well as micro‐imprinting over multiple steps. Finally, the presented concept contributes fundamentally to the evolution of dynamic polymers and provides universal applicability in covalent adaptable networks relying on a base‐catalyzed exchange mechanism.

Abstract:Due to the high reactivity and versatility of benzenesulfonothioates, significant advancements have been made in constructing C-S bonds. However, there are certain limitations in the synthesis of S-thiosulfonates and SS-thiosulfonates, especially when dealing with substantial steric hindrance, which poses a significant challenge. Herein, we present an innovative approach for assembling unsymmetric S-thiosulfonates and unsymmetric SS-thiosulfonates through the integration of dual copper/photoredox catalysis. Moreover, we also realized the one-pot strategy by directly using carboxylic acids as raw materials by in-situ activation of them to access S-thiosulfonates and SS-thiosulfonates without further purification and presynthesis of NHPI esters. The envisaged synthesis and utilization of these reagents are poised to pioneer an innovative pathway for fabricating a versatile spectrum of mono-, di-, and polysulfide compounds. Furthermore, they introduce a class of potent sulfenylating reagents, empowering the synthesis of intricate unsymmetrical disulfides that were previously challenging to access.
