Abstract:Inspired by nature, a zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8@reduced graphene oxide (ZIF-8@rGO) aerogel was developed to remove tetracycline (TC) from water. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles grown on the rGO aerogel act like the many tentacles of a coral to hunt TC, and the rGO aerogel not only acts as a substrate but also acts like the belly of the coral, which can accommodate a large number of pollutants. Benefiting from these advantages, the ZIF-8@rGO aerogel can decontaminate TC, and showed an excellent adsorption capacity of 1776.26 mg g(-1). Based on the experimental tests and characterization analysis, we speculated that the adsorption mechanism between TC and ZIF-8@rGO aerogel was mainly related to the hydrogen -bonding interactions, pi-pi interaction and electrostatic attraction. This discovery could be transformative for the removal of different types of pollutants by means of adjusting the functional groups of the mate-rials and their composite technology. Cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide composite for the adsorption and removal of levofloxacin hydrochloride antibiotic from aqueous solution

Abstract:Residual antibiotics in water are often persistent organic pollutants. The purpose of this study was to prepare a cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide composite (CNCs-GO) with a three-dimensional structure for the removal of the antibiotic levofloxacin hydrochloride (Levo-HCl) in water by adsorption. The scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and other characterization methods were used to study the physical structure and chemical properties of the CNCs-GO. The three-dimensional structure of the composite material rendered a high surface area and electrostatic attraction, resulting in increased adsorption capacity of the CNCs-GO for Levo-HCl. Based on the Box–Behnken design, the effects of different factors on the removal of Levo-HCl by the CNCs-GO were explored. The composite material exhibited good antibiotic adsorption capacity, with a removal percentage exceeding 80.1% at an optimal pH of 4, the adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g l −1 , initial pollutant concentration of 10.0 mg l −1 and contact time of 4 h. The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Sips model, and kinetics studies demonstrated that the adsorption process conformed to a quasi-second-order kinetics model. Consequently, the as-synthesized CNCs-GO demonstrates good potential for the effective removal of antibiotics such as levofloxacin hydrochloride from aqueous media.

Removal of Moxifloxacin from Aqueous Solutions Using GO/Cr-MOFs

Abstract:The composite material, consisting of graphene oxide (GO) and chromium metal-organic frameworks (Cr-MOFs), was successfully synthesized by using a solvothermal method. The organic ligand employed was 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid, while chromium acetate served as the source of the metal. The resulting material underwent characterization through Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Subsequently, the adsorption capacity of the composite material toward moxifloxacin was evaluated. The results indicated a gradual increase in the moxifloxacin removal rate from GO/Cr-MOFs over time until reaching an equilibrium with a maximum removal rate of 90.4%. Additionally, it was observed that higher temperatures led to a decrease in the adsorption capacity. By incorporating 30 mg of GO/Cr-MOFs into a solution containing 40 ppm of moxifloxacin, the adsorption capacity could be maximized at 222.25 mg/g. Experimental data on MOF adsorption of moxifloxacin were analyzed using pseudo-first-order kinetics (PFO), pseudo-second-order kinetics (PSO), and Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models for theoretical research purposes. Results showed that the PSO model exhibited a better correlation than the PFO model did. Furthermore, experimental data demonstrated good agreement with the Freundlich isothermal model, suggesting its effectiveness in accurately describing the adsorption process. Henceforth, it can be concluded that chemisorption plays a significant role in removing moxifloxacin by GO/Cr-MOFs. The van't Hoff equation analysis revealed an exothermic and spontaneous nature of moxifloxacin adsorption onto GO/Cr-MOFs. Compared to other materials, the GO/Cr-MOF composite exhibited high potential for applications such as drug removal or related fields.
Preparation of a Three-Dimensional Porous Graphene Oxide–Kaolinite–Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composite for Efficient Adsorption and Removal of Ciprofloxacin

Abstract:Because of the widespread presence of antibiotics in water, soil, and other environments, they pose great potential risks to the environment, threatening human and animal health. In this study, graphene oxide–kaolinite homogeneous dispersion was prepared by simple liquid phase exfoliation. The three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene oxide–kaolinite–poly(vinyl alcohol) composites were prepared by the cross-linking of poly(vinyl alcohol) and the formation of ice crystals during the freezing-drying process. Three influencing factors [adsorbent dosage, ciprofloxacin (CIP) initial concentration, and time] of CIP adsorption and removal were systematically analyzed by the response surface method. The order of significance for response values (CIP removal rate) was adsorbent dosage > CIP initial concentration > time. The 3D porous material showed good adsorption capacity of CIP, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 408.16 mg/g, and it had good recyclability. By Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, it was found the composite adsorbs CIP by hydrogen bonding and π–π interaction. Abstract:Here, a new hierarchical porous carbon was first prepared from sodium lignosulphonate (SLS), an industrial by-product, via a confined carbonization and alkali activation methods using graphene oxide (GO) as template, and was used for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. The addition of GO nanosheets remarkably affected the morphology and pore structure. GLHPC-1, obtained at GO/SLS weight ratio of 1:100, possess a largest specific surface area of 3223m2g−1 and pore volume of 2.275cm3g−1, and thus exhibited an ultrahigh adsorption of 980.4mgg−1 at 318K and fast adsorption rate, as well as a good recycle ability in practice.

Abstract:Zn(II)-impregnated chitosan/graphene oxide composite (Zn(II)-CS/GO) was prepared and applied for adsorptive removal of ciprofloxacin (CFN) from aqueous solutions. The material was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM coupled with EDX, and TGA- DTA. The experimental variables were optimized by Box- Behnken design. Under optimized conditions, the adsorption capacity of Zn(II)-CS/GO for CFN was 210.96 mg/g at pH 6.5. The experimental adsorption data fitted well to Langmuir model with R2 \(\ge 0.9914\). The sorption kinetic data were well described by pseudo- second- order kinetic model (R2 \(\ge 0.9989)\). Elovich model with R2 ˃ 0.986 indicated towards the chemical nature of adsorption. The adsorption of CFN on the adsorbent occurs through electrostatic and π-π interactions. The values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔS°, and ΔH°) indicated that the sorption of CFN on the Zn(II)-CS/GO was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Adsorption- desorption studies suggested that the Zn(II)-CS/GO composite can be used effectively for CFN removal from water.

Abstract:There is an increasing need to develop novel and high-efficiency water purification technologies. This work systematically evaluated the potential of using graphene oxide (GO) directly as filter media for the removal of levofloxacin (LEV), an emerging contaminate, and lead (Pb), a heavy metal, from aqueous solution. Batch and fixed-bed experiments were conducted to determine the sorption behaviors of LEV and Pb onto the GO. In the batch system, GO showed strong sorption of the two contaminants with Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of 256.6 and 227.2 mg g(-1), respectively. The removal of LEV and Pb by GO in fixed-bed columns was high under all tested conditions in both single and mixed solution systems. The removal efficiency of the two contaminants in the GO-sand columns increased with increasing GO content, but decreased with increasing injection flow rate. In the mixed solution system, although LEV and Pb competed for sorption, the GO media still had high removal efficiencies for them. The column experimental data were well described by the Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model, suggesting the model can be used for the design of GO-sand filters in large-scale applications. Findings from this work demonstrated that GO is a promising nano-adsorbent that can be used as a high efficiency filter media in water treatment to remove hazardous metal elements and emerging contaminants. Efficient Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Media with a Fe3O4 Nanoparticles@graphene Oxide Nanosheets Assembly

Abstract:A readily separated composite was prepared via direct assembly of Fe₃O4 magnetic nanoparticles onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) (labeled as Fe₃O₄@GO) and used as an adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline (TC) from wastewater. The effects of external environmental conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, humic acid (HA), TC concentration, and temperature, on the adsorption process were studied. The adsorption data were analyzed by kinetics and isothermal models. The results show that the Fe₃O₄@GO composite has excellent sorptive properties and can efficiently remove TC. At low pH, the adsorption capacity of Fe₃O₄@GO toward TC decreases slowly with increasing pH value, while the adsorption capacity decreases rapidly at higher pH values. The ionic strength has insignificant effect on TC adsorption. The presence of HA affects the affinity of Fe₃O₄@GO to TC. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model fit the adsorption data well. When the initial concentration of TC is 100 mg/L, a slow adsorption process dominates. Film diffusion is the rate limiting step of the adsorption. Importantly, Fe₃O₄@GO has good regeneration performance. The above results are of great significance to promote the application of Fe₃O₄@GO in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract:In this paper, the facile synthesis of graphene oxide and MOF based composite material for the demanded adsorption of leading antibiotic is reported. The adsorbent showed good results for removal of norfloxacin with high adsorption capacity (1114.82 mg/g) and removal efficiency (93.61 %). In addition, Langmuir model proved most suitable with highest value of R2 = 0.99929 among three applied isothermal models. The thermodynamic study showed spontaneous and exothermic (ΔH = −1.1×10−5 Kj/ mol, ΔG = −13324.33 Kj/ mol) nature of adsorption process with reusability of 88.4 % after several cycles. Abstract:Graphene oxide-supported nano zero-valent iron (GO/nZVI) composites were successfully synthesized using a self-assembly method then characterized by various techniques. The results indicate that nZVI can be uniformly dispersed on the flat surface of GO and immersed into the wrinkles of GO, and both the defects structure, specific surface area and pore volume of GO/nZVI increased relative to those of GO and nZVI. These structure changes improve the reactivity of nZVI and adsorption capacity of GO, and alter the adsorption sites. The ability of GO/nZVI to remove atrazine was investigated by batch experiments according to various parameters. It was found that GO/nZVI can significantly increase the removal efficiency of atrazine compared to the pristine GO and nZVI and a synergetic effect occurred between GO and nZVI for atrazine removal. A combination of atrazine adsorption by GO and atrazine reduction by nZVI on GO/nZVI was proposed as the mechanism of atrazine removal, among the adsorption was the major process governed by pi-pi stacking of wrinkles, pore-filling of mesopores, and pi-pi EDA of GO defect sites. The results also suggested that GO/nZVI exhibited high reactivity under a wide pH range due to the mutual balancing effect between reduction and adsorption. In addition, GO/nZVI was easily separated from water and exhibited good stability. Therefore, GO/nZVI composites can be suitable as excellent materials for the treatment of contaminated water.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) was a kind of layer materials with multi-metal elements and good catalytic performance, but the metals can be dissolved during catalysis. Graphene oxide (GO) was a two-dimensional structure with abundant anionic groups with the potential of immobilizing metals. However, LDH combined with GO (LDH/GO) was few reported in the treatment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). In this work, CoFeNi LDH/GO composites were designed and synthesized for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Meanwhile, gatifloxacin (GAT), a typical antibiotic, was used to assess the performance of LDH/GO + PMS system. The characterization of LDH/GO using various measures showed that the adding GO was inserted the layer structure of LDH and the surface functional group of GO was immobilized in LDH well. GAT could be degraded completely after 45 min under the reaction conditions of pH 7.0, 38 mg L−1 GAT, 40 mg L−1 LDH/GO and 400 mg L−1 PMS. The removal of total organic carbon and defluorination reached 55.5% and 78.0% after 5 h reaction, respectively. Quenching tests suggested that the main radicals responsible for GAT degradation and mineralization was sulfate radical (SO4−). The redox cycle made the catalysis of the LDH/GO composites work continuously. Compared with LDH + PMS system, the concentration of dissolved metals decreased 60.6%-74.3% at pH 3.0–11.0 in LDH/GO + PMS system. The reusability test indicates that LDH/GO has stable catalytic performance in removing PPCPs from wastewater.

Enhanced adsorption and synergistic photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by MOF-801/GO composite via solvothermal synthesis

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics seriously affects environmental health and safety. The adsorption and degradation of antibiotics in water resources are particularly important for environmental protection and human health. In this work, we synthesized a new composite material formed by metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene oxide (GO) via one-pot solvothermal synthesis using zirconium oxychloride octahydrate, fumaric acid and GO. The structural characterizations and electrochemical tests of MOF-801/GO were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with MOF-801, MOF-801/GO has a smaller electrochemical impedance, a narrower bandgap, and a nearly hundred times improvement in the transient photoresponse to visible light. In addition, the average pore size becomes larger and thermal stability is improved. This indicates that GO provides a good electron transport channel, suppressed the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and photogenerated holes in MOF-801, and successfully improved the photocatalytic activity of MOF-801. MOF-801/GO was used for the adsorption photocatalytic removal of tetracycline, and the removal efficiency was as high as 97 % at 60 min, nearly 30% improvement over MOF-801, and the efficiency remained above 90 % after three cycles. This work provides a new approach for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in water resources, and a new idea for utilizing the good electrical conductivity of GO to enhance the photoelectric activity of MOFs.
Visible Light-Driven Degradation of Ofloxacin by Graphene Oxide-Supported Titania/zirconia Ternary Nanocomposites

Abstract:Ternary nanocomposites based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and exhibit a markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of ofloxacin under visible light irradiation, as compared to the individual components. Among the series, the sample prepared at the Ti:Zr atomic ratio of 9:1 exhibits the highest degradation efficiency of 94.6% under the irradiation of a 300 W xenon lamp, with a mineralization rate over 40%, and the performance remains virtually unchanged after 5 consecutive cycles of testing. Structural characterizations show that the formation of type I heterojunctions at the TiO2/ZrO2 and rGO interfaces enhances the interfacial charge transfer, and two possible degradation pathways are identified by results from density functional theory calculations, in conjunction with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the degradation intermediates. The photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin is predicted to be efficient and environmentally friendly based on the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. These results underline the significant potential of TiO2/ZrO2/rGO ternary composites in the effective removal of toxic pollutants and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:As a typical nanomaterial, graphene oxide (GO) can be easily dispersed in water and may affect the aqueous environment. In this paper, the degradation of triclosan (TCS) in a Fenton-like system Fe3+/H2O2 in GO aqueous solution was investigated. Interestingly, it was observed that GO at low concentration (2.0 mg/L) could exhibit significant catalytic effect on TCS removal. Meanwhile, results of XPS, Raman and TEM spectroscopy suggested the structure and chemical composition of GO did not exhibit significant change after the oxidation process within 30 min. As per the radical quenching experiments and ESR tests, hydroxyl radical (·OH) was mainly responsible for the decomposition of TCS. Further mechanism study indicated that the reaction activation energy (Ea) could be lowered and the production of ·OH be promoted in the presence of GO, respectively. A total of nine intermediates of TCS degradation were detected by TOF-LC-MS after SPE procedure. Finally, ecotoxicity assessment revealed that degradation of TCS by Fe3+/H2O2 system in GO aqueous solution could yield by-products of smaller toxicity compared with parent compounds.

In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO), were combined with sodium alginate (SA) to improve the adsorption performance and other properties of traditional adsorbents. With the help of hydrogen peroxide and l-cysteine (L-cys), carbon nanotubes/l-cysteine@graphene oxide/sodium alginate (CNTs/L-cys@GO/SA) triple-network composite hydrogels were prepared. Compared with traditional hydrogels and the double-network hydrogels that are currently being developed, these triple-network composite hydrogels can exploit their three-dimensional structure to improve their adsorption capacity. The independent triple-network structure increases the three-dimensional space, so there are more pores and pollutant adsorption sites to achieve the high-efficient removal of ciprofloxacin. And the adsorption capacity of CNTs/L-cys@GO/SA hydrogels can reach 181 mg g-1 and 200 mg g-1 at 25 °C and 15 °C respectively in weak acidity environment. In fact, CNTs/L-cys@GO/SA hydrogels show better property at low temperature. In addition, the thermal stability, mechanical properties and swelling ability of the triple-network hydrogels have also been improved. The independent multilayer network can retain the excellent properties of the original materials and make the internal space of hydrogels larger. These multinetwork hydrogels have great potential for removing pollutants from wastewater. In addition, the CNTs/L-cys@GO/SA hydrogels show the higher adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin under the conditions of weak acidity, low temperature and low inorganic salt concentration, so the removal of ciprofloxacin by hydrogels can also be promoted by changing environmental conditions.
Graphene-based nanocomposite as an effective, multifunctional, and recyclable antibacterial agent

Abstract:The development of new antibacterial agents that are highly effective are of great interest. Herein, we present a recyclable and synergistic nanocomposite by growing both iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of graphene oxide (GO), obtaining GO-IONP-Ag nanocomposite as a novel multifunctional antibacterial material. Compared with AgNPs, which have been widely used as antibacterial agents, our GO-IONP-Ag shows much higher antibacterial efficiency toward both Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Taking the advantage of its strong near-infrared (NIR) absorbance, photothermal treatment is also conducted with GO-IONP-Ag, achieving a remarkable synergistic antibacterial effect to inhibit S. aureus at a rather low concentration of this agent. Moreover, with magnetic IONPs existing in the composite, we can easily recycle GO-IONP-Ag by magnetic separation, allowing its repeated use. Given the above advantages as well as its easy preparation and cheap cost, GO-IONP-Ag developed in this work may find potential applications as a useful antibacterial agent in the areas of healthcare and environmental engineering.
Efficient removal of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin from aqueous solutions using a novel nano-scale adsorbent: Modeling, optimization, and characterization

Abstract:In the fascinating realm of water purification, our study unveils the remarkable potential of a cutting-edge nano-scale adsorbent—combining graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS), and polydopamine (PDA)—in efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CPF) and ofloxacin (OFL) from aqueous solutions. Our exploration delves deep into the adsorbent's character, utilizing a range of analytical techniques including SEM, RAMAN, FTIR, TGA, BET, XRD, and Zeta potential analyses provided insights into the adsorbent's properties. Modeling the adsorption process with Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) indicated excellent predictions by GRNN, with RMSE = 0.0200 and 0.0166, MAE = 0.0082 and 0.0092, as well as AAD = 0.0002 and 0.0006, highlighting its modeling power. Optimization using genetic algorithm (GA) revealed maximum CPF removal efficiency of approximately 95.20% under pH = 6.3, sonication time = 9.0 min, adsorbent dosage = 2.10 g L− 1 , temperature = 45 °C and initial CPF concentration = 90.0 mg L− 1 . Similarly, OFL removal reached about 95.50% under pH = 6.30, sonication time = 8.0 min, adsorbent dosage = 2.0 g L− 1 , temperature = 45 °C and OFL concentration = 115.0 mg L− 1 . RSM optimization closely aligned with GA results. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model best fitted the experimental data for both antibiotics. Thermodynamic analysis indicated a favorable and spontaneous adsorption process for CPF and OFL. The study concludes that the proposed adsorbents show effectiveness in removing CPF and OFL at lower doses and shorter sonication times compared to various reported adsorbents.

Abstract:The Zn/Cr-MOFs/TiO2 composites were synthesized using the solvothermal method. XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques were utilized to characterize the Zn/Cr-MOFs/TiO2 composites employed for simulating levofloxacin hydrochloride in wastewater. The impact of the mass of the Zn/Cr-MOFs/TiO2 composite, concentration of levofloxacin hydrochloride, solution pH, and temperature on the adsorption performance was investigated. Experimental findings indicated that at pH 6, the maximum removal efficiency of levofloxacin hydrochloride by the Zn/Cr-MOFs/TiO2 composite was achieved at 88.8%, with an adsorption capacity of 246.3 mg/g. To analyze the experimental data, both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models were applied, revealing that the pseudo-second-order model provided a better fit to the data. Additionally, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to study equilibrium adsorption behavior and showed good agreement with both kinetic modeling and Langmuir isotherm analysis results. These observations suggest that monolayer adsorption predominates during the removal process of levofloxacin hydrochloride by Zn/Cr-MOFs/TiO2 composites.

Abstract:In order to control the antibiotic-related crisis and reduce the negative impacts on the environment and human health, it is urgent to develop effective technologies to eliminate residual antibiotics in water. Herein, we successfully fabricated a novel, pH-responsive and magnetically separable dynamic system for micropollutant adsorption and oxidation degradation in graphene oxide (GO)/nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite with macroscopic structure. The pH-responsive self-assembly behavior of GO/nZVI composite was explored. The macroscopic structure of GO/nZVI composite serves as an excellent adsorbent for antibiotic removal in water. The adsorption process is fast and highly efficient even in high salty and humic acid containing water under acid to neutral conditions. After removal antibiotics, GO/nZVI composite is conveniently separated by magnetic system and put into alkaline solution (pH > 9) for adsorbent regeneration. Interestingly, it is found that at pH > 9, GO/nZVI composite disassembles partly upon increasing pH values, leading to the elution of antibiotics for efficient antibiotics degradation by ozonization. More importantly, this pH-responsive GO/nZVI system exhibits high removal efficiency, high stability, reusability and easily separation, making it a promising method for treatment of water with micropollutants.
