Abstract:For more than 20 years it has been debated if yield stress fluids are solid below the yield stress or actually flow; whether true yield stress fluids exist or not. Advocates of the true yield stress picture have demonstrated that the effective viscosity increases very rapidly as the stress is decreased towards the yield stress. Opponents have shown that this viscosity increase levels off, and that the material behaves as a Newtonian fluid of very high viscosity below the yield stress. In this paper, we demonstrate experimentally (on four different materials, using three different rheometers, five different geometries, and two different measurement methods) that the low-stress Newtonian viscosity is an artifact that arises in non steady state experiments. For measurements as long as 10,000 seconds we find that the value of the 'Newtonian viscosity' increases indefinitely. This proves that the yield stress exists and marks a sharp transition between flowing states and states where the steady state viscosity is infinite -a solid!

Abstract:Materials such as foams, concentrated emulsions, dense suspensions or colloidal gels, are yield stress fluids. Their steady flow behavior, characterized by standard rheometric techniques, is usually modeled by a Herschel-Bulkley law. The emergence of techniques that allow the measurement of their local flow properties (velocity and volume fraction fields) has led to observe new complex behaviors. It was shown that many of these materials exhibit shear banding in a homogeneous shear stress field, which cannot be accounted for by the standard steady-state constitutive laws of simple yield stress fluids. In some cases, it was also observed that the velocity fields under various conditions cannot be modeled with a single constitutive law and that nonlocal models are needed to describe the flows. Doubt may then be cast on any macroscopic characterization of such systems, and one may wonder if any material behaves in some conditions as a Herschel-Bulkley material. In this paper, we address the question of the existence of a simple yield stress fluid behavior. We first review experimental results from the literature and we point out the main factors (physical properties, experimental procedure) at the origin of flow inhomogeneities and nonlocal effects. It leads us to propose a well-defined procedure to ensure that steady-state bulk properties of the materials are studied. We use this procedure to investigate yield stress fluid flows with MRI techniques. We focus on nonthixotropic dense suspensions of soft particles (foams, concentrated emulsions, Carbopol gels). We show that, as long as they are studied in a wide (as compared to the size of the material mesoscopic elements) gap geometry, these materials behave as 'simple yield stress fluids': they are homogeneous, they do not exhibit steady-state shear banding, and their steady flow behavior in simple shear can be modeled by a local continuous monotonic constitutive equation which accounts for flows in various conditions and matches the macroscopic response.

Abstract:When subjected to an external stress that exceeds the yield stress ($\sigma_\mathrm{Y}$), yield stress fluids (YSFs) undergo a solid-to-liquid transition. Despite the extensive studies, there has been limited attention to the process of liquid-to-solid transition. This work examines the solidification of YSFs through capillary imbibition, easily observed in the processes of wetting, coating, spreading, and wicking. During gradual deceleration of the capillary rise, YSFs display an unexpected flowing behavior, even when subjected to stresses below the $\sigma_\mathrm{Y}$. We propose a model with numerical solutions based on rheological properties of YSFs and slip to capture this unusual, yet universal behavior.

Trapped Stresses in Simple Yield Stress Materials Influence Their Rheology and Cause Delayed Yielding

Abstract:Simple yield stress materials are composed of soft particles, bubbles, or droplets with purely repulsive forces. The constituent elements are typically too large to undergo thermal fluctuations, suggesting that the material internal structure, and therefore its rheology, should not change over time. Here, we explore the rheology of Carbopol, a prototypical simple yield stress material, and reveal that gradual, spontaneous relaxation of residual stresses, induced when loading the sample into rheometer, results in a small yet significant reduction in the material dynamic yield stress. This relaxation process can lead to a non-monotonic creep deformation rate under constant stress, culminating in delayed fluidization of the material. These findings highlight that yield stress is not merely a static material property but a function of the material internal stress state.

Abstract:Journal of Rheology, Volume 67, Issue 2, Page 461-477, March 2023. Thixotropy is a phenomenon related to time dependent change in viscosity in the presence or absence of flow. The yield stress, on the other hand, represents the minimum value of stress above which steady flow can be sustained. In addition, the yield stress of a material may also change as a function of time. Both these characteristic features in a material strongly influence the steady state flow curve of the same. This study aims to understand the interrelation between thixotropy, yield stress, and their relation with the flow curve. In this regard, we study five thixotropic materials that show yield stress. The relaxation time of all the five systems shows power-law dependence on aging time with behaviors ranging from weaker than linear, linear to stronger than linear. Furthermore, the elastic modulus and yield stress have been observed to be constant for some systems while time dependent for the others. We also analyze the experimental behavior through a viscoelastic thixotropic structural kinetic model that predicts the observed experimental behavior of constant as well as time-dependent yield stress quite well. These findings indicate that a nonmonotonic steady-state flow curve in a structural kinetic formalism necessarily leads to time-dependent yield stress, while constant yield stress is predicted by a monotonic steady-state flow curve with stress plateau in the limit of low shear rates. The present work, therefore, shows that thixotropic materials may exhibit either monotonic or nonmonotonic flow curves. Consequently, thixotropic materials may show no yield stress, constant yield stress, or time-dependent yield stress.

Abstract:Normal stresses in complex fluids lead to new flow phenomena because they can be comparable to or even larger than the shear stress itself. In addition, they are of paramount importance for formulating and testing constitutive equations for predicting non-viscometric flow behavior. Very little attention has so far been paid to the normal stresses of yield stress fluids, mainly because they are very difficult to measure. We report the first systematic study of the first and second normal stress differences, N1 (>0) and N2 (<0), in both continuous and oscillatory shear of three model yield stress fluids. We show that both normal stress differences are quadratic functions of the shear stress both above and below the shear yield stress, leading to the existence of a yield normal stress.

Abstract:A theoretical and numerical study of complex sliding flows of yield-stress fluids is presented. Yield-stress fluids are known to slide over solid surfaces if the tangential stress exceeds the {\it sliding yield stress}. The sliding may occur due to various microscopic phenomena such as the formation of a infinitesimal lubrication layer of the solvent and/or elastic deformation of the suspended soft particles in the vicinity of the solid surfaces. This leads to a `stick-slip' law which complicates the modelling and analysis of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the yield-stress fluid flow. In the present study, we formulate the problem of sliding flow beyond one-dimensional rheometric flows. Then, a numerical scheme based on the augmented Lagrangian method is presented to attack these kind of problems. Theoretical tools are developed for analysing the flow/no-flow limit. The whole framework is benchmarked in planar Poiseuille flow and validated against analytical solutions. Then two more complex physical problems are investigated: slippery particle sedimentation and pressure-driven sliding flow in porous media. The {\it yield limit} is addressed in detail for both flow cases. In the particle sedimentation problem, method of characteristics---slipline method---in the presence of slip is revisited from the perfectly-plastic mechanics and used as a helpful tool in addressing the yield limit. Finally, flows through model and randomized porous media are studied. The randomized configuration is chosen to capture more sophisticated aspects of the yield-stress fluid flows in porous media at the yield limit---channelization.
Viscous fingering in a yield stress fluid

Abstract:We study the Saffman-Taylor or viscous fingering instability in yield stress fluids. The theory for yield stress fluids shows that the dispersion equation of the instability is similar to that for Newtonian fluids; however, the capillary number governing the instability now contains the yield stress. Experiments using gels and foams reveal very branched fingers in the gel. The results are in excellent agreement with theory for the gel, with, in addition, a crossover from yield stress dominated to viscous behavior. The results for foams are very different due to the existence of wall slip.

Abstract:Many high-concentration multiphase materials that are industrially and academically important do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium because of kinetic constraints originating from the structurally arrested microstructure. However, owing to thermal or elastic energy of the constituents, their microstructure progressively reorganizes to form thermodynamically more stable states. In this physical ageing process, the whole spectrum of relaxation times evolves that makes relaxation dynamics increasingly sluggish. In a process of rejuvenation, deformation field increases mobility, but non-trivially alters the shape of relaxation time spectrum. Interestingly, this class of materials also demonstrates yield stress, whose origin could be closely related to physical aging, and as a result, it depends on time and deformation history. In this review, we present an overview of experimental behaviors and theoretical advances that indicate a complex coupling between ageing and rejuvenation for this class of materials having diverse microstructures.

Abstract:Many types of dense suspensions are complex materials exhibiting both solid-like and fluid-like behavior. These suspensions are usually considered to behave as non-Newtonian fluids and the rheological characteristics such as yield stress, thixotropy and shear-thinning/thickening can have significant impact on the flow and the engineering applications of these materials. Therefore, it is important to understand the rheological features of these fluids. In this paper, we study the flow of a nonlinear fluid which exhibits yield stress and shear-thinning effects. The geometries of interests are a straight channel, a channel with a crevice and a pipe with a contraction; we assume the fluid behaves as a Herschel-Bulkley fluid. The numerical simulations indicate that for flows with low Reynolds number and high Bingham number an unyielded plug may form in the center of the channel. In the case of a channel with a crevice, the fluid in the deep portion of the crevice is at an extremely high level of viscosity, forming a plug which is hard to yield. For the pipe with a contraction, near the pipe neck the unyielded region is smaller due to the enhanced flow disturbance.

On different ways of measuring “the” yield stress

Abstract:Yield stress materials are ubiquitous, yet the best way to obtain the value of the yield stress for any given material has been the subject of considerable debate. Here we compare different methods of measuring the yield stress with conventional rheometers that have been used in the literature on a variety of materials. The main conclusion is that, at least for well-behaved (non-thixotropic) materials, the differences between the various methods are significant; on the other hand, the scaling of the measured yield stress with the volume fraction of dispersed phase shows the same dependence independently of the way in which the yield stress is obtained experimentally. The measured yield strain is similarly found to depend on the method employed. The yield stress values obtained for a simple (non-thixotropic) yield stress fluid are only similar for Herschel–Bulkley fits and stress-strain curves obtained from oscillatory measurements. Stress-strain curves with a continuous imposed stress or strain rate differ significantly, as do oscillatory measurements of the crossover between G′ and G″ or the point where G′ starts to differ significantly from its linear response value. The intersection of the G′ and G″ curves as a function of strain consistently give the highest value of the yield stress and yield strain. In addition, many of these criteria necessitate some arbitrary definition of a crossover point. Similar conclusions apply for a class of thixotropic yield stress materials, with the stress-strain curve from the oscillatory data giving the dynamic yield stress and the Herschel–Bulkley fit either the static or dynamic yield stress, depending on how the measurement is carried out.

Abstract:An elastoviscoplastic constitutive equation is proposed to describe both the elastic and rate-dependent plastic deformation behavior of Carbopol® dispersions, commonly used to study yield-stress fluids. The model, a variant of the nonlinear Maxwell model with stress-dependent relaxation time, eliminates the need for a separate Herschel–Bulkley yield stress. The stress dependence of the viscosity was determined experimentally by evaluating the steady-state flow stress at a constant applied shear rate and by measuring the steady-state creep rate at constant applied shear stress. Experimentally, the viscosity’s stress-dependence was confirmed to follow the Ree–Eyring model. Furthermore, it is shown that the Carbopol® dispersions used here obey time-stress superposition, indicating that all relaxation times experience the same stress dependence. This was demonstrated by building a compliance mastercurve using horizontal shifting on a logarithmic time axis of creep curves measured at different stress levels and by constructing mastercurves of the storage- and loss-modulus curves determined independently by orthogonal superposition measurements at different applied constant shear stresses. Overall, the key feature of the proposed constitutive equation is its incorporation of a nonlinear stress-activated change in relaxation time, which enables a smooth transition from elastic to viscous behavior during start-up flow experiments. This approach bypasses the need for a distinct Herschel–Bulkley yield stress as a separate material characteristic. Additionally, the model successfully replicates the observed steady-state flow stress in transient-flow scenarios and the steady-state flow rate in creep experiments, underlining its effectiveness in capturing the material’s dynamic response. Finally, the one-dimensional description is readily extended to a full three-dimensional finite-strain elastoviscoplastic constitutive equation.

A simple model for heterogeneous flows of yield stress fluids

Abstract:Various experiments evidence spatial heterogeneities in sheared yield stress fluids. To account for heterogeneities in the velocity gradient direction, we use a simple model corresponding to a non-monotonous local constitutive curve and study a simple shear geometry. Different types of boundary conditions are considered. Under controlled macroscopic shear stress $\Sigma$, we find homogeneous flow in the bulk and a hysteretic macroscopic stress - shear rate curve. Under controlled macroscopic shear rate $\dot{\Gamma}$, shear banding is predicted within a range of values of $\dot{\Gamma}$. For small shear rates, stick slip can also be observed. These qualitative behaviours are robust when changing the boundary conditions.

Abstract:We report that aqueous solutions of high molecular weight chitosan display a regime of shear thinning at low shear rates that is consistent with the existence of an apparent yield stress. The concentration-dependent scaling of the apparent yield stress, σ0(c)~c2.8±0.2 in the concentration range c = 7.50–65.0 mg/mL, is consistent with a solution microstructure of fractal clusters. Dynamic light scattering measurements at high concentration indicate extremely slow microdynamics, consistent with the presence of a structured network or glassy fluid. At shear rates above yielding, a constant viscosity plateau was observed with concentration-dependent scaling below the gel point consistent with existing models of entangled and associating polymers. The addition of urea, a hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction disrupter, did not change the reported concentration-dependent scaling of the apparent yield stress or the plateau viscosity but did weaken the apparent yield stress magnitude by ~ 30% on average.

Abstract:Motivated by the industrial processing of chocolate, we study experimentally the fluidisation of a sessile drop of yield-stress fluid on a pre-existing layer of the same fluid under vertical sinusoidal oscillations. We compare the behaviours of molten chocolate and Carbopol which are both shear-thinning with a similar yield stress but exhibit very different elastic properties. We find that these materials spread when the forcing acceleration exceeds a threshold which is determined by the initial deposition process. However, they exhibit very different spreading behaviours: whereas chocolate exhibits slow long-term spreading, the Carbopol drop rapidly relaxes its stress by spreading to a new equilibrium shape with an enlarged footprint. This spreading is insensitive to the history of the forcing. In addition, the Carbopol drop performs large-amplitude oscillations with the forcing frequency, both above and below the threshold. We investigate these viscoelastic oscillations and provide evidence of complex nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour in the vicinity of the spreading threshold. In fact, for forcing accelerations greater than the spreading threshold, our drop automatically adjusts its shape to remain at the yield stress. We discuss how our vibrated-drop experiment offers a new and powerful approach to probing the yield transition in elastoviscoplastic fluids.

Abstract:Large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations are performed to study the steady-state yielding dynamics of a well-established simple glass. In contrast to the supercooled state, where the shear stress, σ, tends to zero at vanishing shear rate, γ̇, a stress plateau forms in the glass which extends over about two decades in shear rate. This strongly suggests the existence of a finite dynamic yield stress in the glass, σ+(T)≡σ(T;γ̇→0)>0. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of σ+ suggests a yield stress discontinuity at a critical temperature of Tc=0.4 in agreement with recent mode coupling theory predictions. The corresponding qualitative change of the flow curves enables us to bracket the critical temperature Tc of the theory from above and from below. We scrutinize and support this observation by testing explicitly for the assumptions (affine flow, absence of flow-induced ordering) inherent in the theory. Furthermore, while qualitative similarity is found between the viscosity and the final relaxation time of stress fluctuations, significant quantitative differences are observed in the nonlinear regime.

Abstract:Large amplitude oscillation shear has been an important method to investigate the yielding and flow behavior of yield stress materials. However, there are great uncertainties in determination of the yield stress from the shear stress (or shear strain) dependence of the apparent dynamic moduli or the relative harmonic intensity using Fourier transform rheology. The yield stress from these dynamic methods is also inconsistent with the steady shear and transient shear measurements. We propose a new method, namely, stress bifurcation, based on the geometric average of elastic and viscous Lissajous curves to study the yielding transition of different yield stress fluids in large amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The results prove that typical yield stress fluids such as concentrated emulsions, polymer nanocomposites, microgels, and particulate gels all exhibit stress bifurcations, both inter and intra cyclically, in large amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. Such stress bifurcation phenomena between the average stress-strain (or strain rate) curves are independent of the type of input signal, i.e., stress-controlled versus strain-controlled. A start yield stress (strain) (related to strain) and an end yield stress (strain rate) (related to strain rate), instead of a single critical variable, were suggested to characterize yielding transitions. The frequency dependences of critical stresses, critical strain, and critical strain rate determined by the new method were also investigated systematically for the different kinds of yield stress fluids. A visco-elastic-plastic model, the Kelvin-Voigt-Herschel-Bulkley model, was also adopted to understand the stress bifurcation and frequency dependencies of critical variables in large oscillatory shear flow.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of viscoplastic fluid flows have provided a better understanding of fundamental properties of yield stress fluids in many applications relevant to natural and engineering sciences. In the first part of this paper, we review the classical numerical methods for the solution of the non-smooth viscoplastic mathematical models, highlight their advantages and drawbacks, and discuss more recent numerical methods that show promises for fast algorithms and accurate solutions. In the second part, we present and analyze a variety of applications and extensions involving viscoplastic flow simulations: yield slip at the wall, heat transfer, thixotropy, granular materials, and combining elasticity, with multiple phases and shallow flow approximations. We illustrate from a physical viewpoint how fascinating the corresponding rich phenomena pointed out by these simulations are.

Abstract:The yielding transition in athermal complex fluids can be interpreted as an absorbing phase transition between an elastic, absorbing state with high mesoscopic degeneracy and a flowing, active state. We characterize quantitatively this phase transition in an elastoplastic model under fixed applied shear stress, using a finite-size scaling analysis. We find vanishing critical fluctuations of the order parameter (i.e., the shear rate), and relate this property to the convex character of the phase transition ($\beta >1$). We show explicitly that the CDP class is recovered when both properties are relaxed. We locate yielding within a family of models akin to fixed-energy sandpile (FES) models, only with long-range redistribution kernels with zero-modes that result from mechanical equilibrium. For redistribution kernels with sufficiently fast decay, this family of models belong to a short-range universality class distinct from the Conserved Directed Percolation class of usual FES, which is induced by zero modes.
