Abstract:Chiral liquid crystal polymers (CLCPs) with spontaneous ordered structure, unique optical properties and high flexibility are promising smart materials. However, their broad application is inevitably limited by the single attribute of chiral mesophase in the cases of fabricating functional materials with multiple attributes. In this work, a novel and effective method of modifying CLCPs by charged two-dimensional (2D) zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoplatelets is established. ZrP nanoplatelets can be incorporated into the matrix of CLCPs by the host-guest effect. The dispersed ZrP nanoplatelets can increase the glass transition temperature due to the steric hindrance. The incorporation of ZrP nanoplatelets can increase the thermal decomposition temperature of CLCPs from 274.2 °C to 316.9 °C when the ZrP content ranging from 0 wt% to 20 wt%. The CLCP-ZrP nanocomposites exhibit typical thermochromism in the visible light region in response to temperature. The intercalation of ZrP nanoplatelets can tune the wettability of CLCPs from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity, the contact angles are within the range from 26.25° to 110.0°. We believe the modification of CLCPs by ZrP nanoplatelets paves the way to functionalize polymer matrix by a variety of novel 2D materials, such as black phosphorus, MXenes and transition-metal dichalcogenides, and to fabricate multifunctional nanocomposites.
Synthesis of Functional, Nanostructured Composites and Catalysts Using Polymerizable Lyotropic Liquid Crystals

Abstract:We have developed a general scheme for synthesizing nanostructured, polymer-based materials with hexagonal symmetry. This strategy involves the cross-linking of lyotropic liquid crystal monomers that form the inverted hexagonal mesophase in the presence of pure water or reactive solutions. Depending on the nature of the hydrophilic solution, inorganic or organic solid-state fillers can be formed inside the channels of these ordered templates to afford a variety of functional nanocomposites. In addition, the nanostructured polymer networks can also act as heterogeneous catalysts for organic reactions (i.e., organic "analogs" to molecular sieves). The design, synthesis, and control of these materials will be described. The effect of the nano-architecture on their properties and reactivity will also be discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are an integral part of a mature display technology, also establishing themselves in other applications, such as spatial light modulators, telecommunication technology, photonics, or sensors, just to name a few of the non-display applications. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend to add various nanomaterials to liquid crystals, which is motivated by several aspects of materials development. (i) addition of nanomaterials can change and thus tune the properties of the liquid crystal; (ii) novel functionalities can be added to the liquid crystal; and (iii) the self-organization of the liquid crystalline state can be exploited to template ordered structures or to transfer order onto dispersed nanomaterials. Much of the research effort has been concentrated on thermotropic systems, which change order as a function of temperature. Here we review the other side of the medal, the formation and properties of ordered, anisotropic fluid phases, liquid crystals, by addition of shape-anisotropic nanomaterials to isotropic liquids. Several classes of materials will be discussed, inorganic and mineral liquid crystals, viruses, nanotubes and nanorods, as well as graphene oxide.

In this paper we present an electro-optical device consisting of nematic liquid crystals addressed by an electrode structure consisting of thin films of polymer wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes (nanohybrids). Thin films of nanohybrids display excellent optical transmission and electrical conduction properties. Due to the randomly organised nanohybrids these composite films produce interesting director profile arrangements within the liquid crystal layers. As a result, enhanced scattering of laser and white light was observed from these liquid crystal cells which bend themselves as electrically controllable optical diffusers and beam shapers.

Abstract:Liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) are a unique class of soft materials that combine liquid crystal and polymer characteristics. This perspective highlights recent advances of LCPs on the aspects of molecular engineering, hierarchical structures, and emerging applications. The strategy of sequence control in polymer synthesis has been introduced to tailor the primary structures of LCPs as well as their phases and orders. By incorporating mesogenic motifs rich in shape, order, and interaction into LCPs, novel bulk and interfacial structures on hierarchical scales are anticipated. The intrinsic features and fascinating properties of LCPs enable them to find potential applications in emerging areas including integrated circuits, lasing, environment, and energy, implying compelling opportunities for LCPs in fundamental science and transformative technologies.

Abstract:We introduce and shortly summarize a variety of more recent aspects of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), which have drawn the attention of the liquid crystal and soft matter community and have recently led to an increasing number of groups studying this fascinating class of materials, alongside their normal activities in thermotopic LCs. The diversity of topics ranges from amphiphilic to inorganic liquid crystals, clays and biological liquid crystals, such as viruses, cellulose or DNA, to strongly anisotropic materials such as nanotubes, nanowires or graphene oxide dispersed in isotropic solvents. We conclude our admittedly somewhat subjective overview with materials exhibiting some fascinating properties, such as chromonics, ferroelectric lyotropics and active liquid crystals and living lyotropics, before we point out some possible and emerging applications of a class of materials that has long been standing in the shadow of the well-known applications of thermotropic liquid crystals, namely displays and electro-optic devices.

Controlling phase and rheological behaviours of hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystalline templates for nanostructural administration and retention

Abstract:Introducing polymerizable monomers into a binary hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) template is a straightforward way for retaining the nanostructure but will decrease attractive intra- and inter- aggregate interactions. It is therefore crucial to understand the interfacial interactions at nanoscale after introducing the monomers but prior to polymerization. Herein, active species, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), were introduced into hexagonal LLC of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide and water to explore the structural variables, dimensional stability, and dynamic property. At a proper volume ratio of PEGDA/HEMA (1/4), the system presents excellent homogeneity with a higher dimensional stability and lower dynamic property from rheological assessments, thereby achieving robust, free-standing, and transparent membranes after photo-polymerization. The unique property of the system also lies in the much lower order-disorder transition temperature (45 °C) that facilitates the reorientation of mesochannels. They are in contrast inaccessible for the ternary system only with PEGDA, though the nanostructure for both systems could be retained. An insight into subtle variations in these parameters allows us to prepare a polymerizable template possessing higher dimensional stability and suitable flexibility via molecular design, thereby enabling simultaneous structural alignment and retention for the development of functional nanomaterials.

Abstract:<p>The shape‐shifting behavior of liquid crystal networks (LCNs) and elastomers (LCEs) is a result of an interplay between their initial geometrical shape and their molecular alignment. For years, reliance on either one‐step in situ or two‐step film processing techniques has limited the shape‐change transformations from 2D to 3D geometries. The combination of various fabrication techniques, alignment methods, and chemical formulations developed in recent years has introduced new opportunities to achieve 3D‐to‐3D shape‐transformations in large scales, albeit the precise control of local molecular alignment in microscale 3D constructs remains a challenge. Here, the voxel‐by‐voxel encoding of nematic alignment in 3D microstructures of LCNs produced by two‐photon polymerization using high‐resolution topographical features is demonstrated. 3D LCN microstructures (suspended films, coils, and rings) with designable 2D and 3D director fields with a resolution of 5 µm are achieved. Different shape transformations of LCN microstructures with the same geometry but dissimilar molecular alignments upon actuation are elicited. This strategy offers higher freedom in the shape‐change programming of 3D LCN microstructures and expands their applicability in emerging technologies, such as small‐scale soft robots and devices and responsive surfaces.</p>

Abstract:Exploiting the interplay of anisotropic diamagnetic susceptibility of liquid crystalline monomers and site selective photopolymerization enables the fabrication of 3D freeforms with highly refined mi- crostructures. Utilizing chain transfer agents in the mesogenic inks presents a pathway for broadly tuning the mechanical properties of liquid crystalline polymers and their response to stimuli. In par- ticular, the combination of 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol and tetrabromomethane is shown to enable voxelated blueprinting of molecular order, while allowing for a modulation of the crosslink density and the mechanical properties. The formulation of these monomers allows for the resolution of the voxels to approach the limits set by the coherence lengths defined by the anchoring from surfaces. These compositions demonstrate the expected thermotropic responses while allowing for their func- tionalization with photochromic switches to elicit photomechanical responses. Actuation strains are shown to outstrip that accomplished with prior systems that did not access chain transfer agents to modulate the structure of the macromolecular network. Test cases of this system are shown to create freeform actuators that exploit the refined director patterns during high-resolution printing. These include topological defects, hierarchically-structured light responsive grippers, and biomimetic passive flyers whose flight dynamics can be actively modulated via irradiation with light.

Abstract:Utilizing self-assembled lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) templates with radical photopolymerization shows promise in controlling polymer structure on the nanometer scale This control of nanostructure allows tailoring and enhancement of material properties not attainable in traditional polymerization in applications including hydrogels and stimuli-responsive systems. However, thermodynamically driven phase separation between the polymer and LLC templates often hinders the control of local polymer order and resultant polymer properties. This study investigates an alternative method to control the hydrogel nanostructure and avoid phase separation using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) in the LLC template while modulating the light intensity used in photopolymerization. The addition of the IL improves the thermodynamic stability and enhances the polymerization rate in the LLC system. The degree of LLC nanostructure retention is increased by increasing light intensities during polymerization. In addition, intermediate concentrations of cross-linker allow a balance between phase stability and cross-linking to lock in LLC morphology. With enhanced retention, the maximum water uptake is significantly higher compared with isotropic controls. These results demonstrate a method to increase the structure on the nanometer scale of a polymer by combining the addition of ILs with the proper selection of light intensity and cross-link density that allows access to unique hydrogel properties. These templated polymers demonstrate enhanced swelling and a stimuli response that show promise in applications ranging from drug delivery to water remediation.

Abstract:The organization of nanoparticles in constrained geometries has attracted increasing attention due to their promising structures and topologies. However, the control of hierarchical structures with tailored periodicity at different length scales and topology stabilization in a dynamic environment are very limited and challenging. Herein, through self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) within an in situ formed hydrogel sheath using a simple microfluidic strategy, a new breed of liquid crystal (LC) fibers with hierarchical core-sheath architectures, metaperiodic cholesteric alignments, and 3D topological defects, termed as liquid metacrystal (LMC) fibers, is created. The resulting LMC fibers not only exhibit vivid, tunable interference colors, and even inverse optical activity but also have a unique ability to precisely regulate linearly and circularly polarized light in a half-sync/half-async form. Furthermore, robust hydrogel sheath enables the LMCs with alignment stability and configuration programmability during drying, which endows the unprecedented freedom to tailor different optical appearances for polarization-based encryption and recognition. This work opens an avenue toward the fabrication of length-scale colloidal LCs with continuous and stable topologies and expands the application regimes of LC materials in chiral optics and smart textiles.

Abstract:<p>Amphiphilic lipids aggregate in aqueous solution into a variety of structural arrangements. Among the plethora of ordered structures that have been reported, many have also been observed in nature. In addition, due to their unique morphologies, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains, very high internal interfacial surface area, and the multitude of possible order−order transitions depending on environmental changes, very promising applications have been developed for these systems in recent years. These include crystallization in inverse bicontinuous cubic phases for membrane protein structure determination, generation of advanced materials, sustained release of bioactive molecules, and control of chemical reactions. The outstanding diverse functionalities of lyotropic liquid crystalline phases found in nature and industry are closely related to the topology, including how their nanoscopic domains are organized. This leads to notable examples of correlation between structure and macroscopic properties, which is itself central to the performance of materials in general. The physical origin of the formation of the known classes of lipidic lyotropic liquid crystalline phases, their structure, and their occurrence in nature are described, and their application in materials science and engineering, biology, medical, and pharmaceutical products, and food science and technology are exemplified.</p>

Abstract:Mesoporous materials based on lyotropic liquid crystal templates with precisely defined and flexible nanostructures offer an alluring solution to the age-old challenge of water scarcity. In contrast, polyamide (PA)-based thin-film composite (TFC) membranes have long been hailed as the state of the art in desalination. They grapple with a common trade-off between permeability and selectivity. However, the tides are turning as these novel materials, with pore sizes ranging from 0.2 to 5 nm, take center stage as highly coveted active layers in TFC membranes. With the ability to regulate water transport and influence the formation of the active layer, the middle porous substrate of TFC membranes becomes an essential player in unlocking their true potential. This review delves deep into the recent advancements in fabricating active layers using lyotropic liquid crystal templates on porous substrates. It meticulously analyzes the retention of the liquid crystal phase structure, explores the membrane fabrication processes, and evaluates the water filtration performance. Additionally, it presents an exhaustive comparison between the effects of substrates on both polyamide and lyotropic liquid crystal template top layer-based TFC membranes, covering crucial aspects such as surface pore structures, hydrophilicity, and heterogeneity. To push the boundaries even further, the review explores a diverse array of promising strategies for surface modification and interlayer introduction, all aimed at achieving an ideal substrate surface design. Moreover, it delves into the realm of cutting-edge techniques for detecting and unraveling the intricate interfacial structures between the lyotropic liquid crystal and the substrate. This review is a passport to unravel the enigmatic world of lyotropic liquid crystal-templated TFC membranes and their transformative role in global water challenges.

Abstract:Lyotropic liquid crystals represent an important class of anisotropic colloid systems. Their integration with optically active nanoparticles can provide us with responsive luminescent media that offer new fundamental and applied solutions for biomedicine. This paper analyzes the molecular-level behavior of such composites represented by tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether and nanoscale carbon dots in microfluidic channels. Microfluidic confinement allows for simultaneously applying multiple factors, such as flow dynamics, wall effects, and temperature, for the precise control of the molecular arrangement in such composites and their resulting optical properties. The microfluidic behavior of composites was characterized by a set of analytical and modeling tools such as polarized and fluorescent microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and fluorescent spectroscopy, as well as image processing in Matlab. The composites were shown to form tunable anisotropic intermolecular structures in microchannels with several levels of molecular ordering. A predominant lamellar structure of the composites was found to undergo additional ordering with respect to the microchannel axis and walls. Such an alignment was controlled by applying shear and temperature factors to the microfluidic environment. The revealed molecular behavior of the composite may contribute to the synthesis of hybrid organized media capable of polarized luminescence for on-chip diagnostics and biomimetics.

Molecular Shape and Polar Order in Columnar Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Bottom-up materials design by the conceiving of new molecular building blocks is powerful and chemists are uniquely qualified to innovate. Liquid crystals (LCs) and related soft crystals, collectively called mesophases, naturally create materials with dynamic properties. The thermotropic LC state has a liquid-like intermolecular disorder, but the cooperative nature of these materials facilitates a long-range directional order (alignment) that couples strongly to applied electric/magnetic fields and interfaces. Thermotropic LCs are held together by mesogen cores, which are often unsaturated with anisotropic polarizability, and are appended with flexible (often n-alkane) side chains. Thermal excitation of the side chains produces large amplitude motions that drive a melting transition, and the anisotropic attractions between mesogenic cores produce a directional organization that produces the LC order. LCs are liquids as defined by thermodynamics and may not contain three-dimensional (3D) organization. However, in many cases there are 3D ordered phases below the melting temperatures, which are soft (deformable) plastic materials. Unconventional mesogens offer opportunities to create responsive molecular assemblies with optical, electronic, or magnetic activity. I will detail in this account my efforts to control these dynamic states with the goal of creating polar organizations in columnar LCs. The use of molecular shape, dative bonding, and dynamic correlations between molecules in fluid/plastic phases will be highlighted and how applied electric fields can polarize select materials.

Abstract:Smart microstructured materials enable functions such as actuation, detection, transportation, and sensing with potential applications ranging from robotics and photonics to biomedical devices. Of the many materials systems, liquid crystal polymer networks (LCN) are fascinating owing to their ability to exhibit reversible macroscopic deformation driven by a molecular order–disorder phase transition. LCN have been increasingly explored for their utility in the design and fabrication of smart actuating devices capable of complex shape changes or motions upon external stimulation of humidity, heat, light, and other stimuli, and recent studies in this field show that their actuation complexity can be enriched and actuation performance enhanced by having some sort of microstructures. Herein, the recent progress in microstructured actuation of LCN materials with substructures in scale ranging from micrometer to millimeter is reported, placing the emphasis on the main approaches to generating a microstructure in LCN, which include patterned LC director fields, patterned chain crosslinking in LCN with uniaxial orientation of mesogens, 3D/4D printing, and replica molding. The potential applications in microstructured 3D actuators and devices as well as functional LCN surfaces are also highlighted, with an outlook on important issues and future trends in smart microstructured LCN materials and actuators.

Abstract:Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) have gained tremendous scientific attention due to their potentials in fabrication of intelligent soft robots and responsive devices. Modulating the superstructures by molecular engineering via a bottom-up way and gaining insight into the relationships between molecular structures and self-assembled architectures are of significance in understand the self-organization mechanism of mesogens as well as the fabrication of advanced functional materials, given that the properties and stimuli-responsiveness of LCPs are mainly determined by the self-organized superstructures. In this study, a series of innovative homopolymers featuring distinct terminal groups in the side chains were synthesized via thiol-ene click reactions between poly[3-mercaptopropylmethylsiloxane] (PMMS) and a range of monomers with a nearly identical rigid core but varying terminal substituents (4-methylcyclohexyl, p-methylbenzene, and p-biphenyl groups). The thermal behaviour, phase structure, and molecular packing mode were systemically investigated. Experiment results indicate the formation of a smectic E-smectic A-isotropic phase sequence for most polymers. Intriguingly, an additional loosely stacked hexagonal smectic B phase is observed in P-4, which bears biphenyl mesogenic tails, positioned between smectic E and smectic A phases as the temperature increases. This work presents an effective regulatory strategy for achieving diverse phase transition behaviors and hierarchical constructions through subtle tuning of the molecular structure in the side chains of liquid crystalline polysiloxanes. Through rational molecular design and modulation of terminal groups in building blocks, as an efficient approach, it is quite efficient to achieve diverse phase transition behaviours and adjust phase structures.
