Abstract:Graphene-based materials have gained a lot of scientific interest in the research era of modern technology, which can be quite flexible. Graphene has become popular as a potential material for the manufacture of a wide range of technologies due to its remarkable electrical, mechanical, and optical traits. Due to these excellent characteristics, the derivatives of graphene can be functionalized in various applications including environmental, medical, electronic, defence applications, and many more. In this review paper, we discussed the different synthesis methods for the extraction of graphene and its derivatives. The different traits of graphene and its derivatives such as structural, mechanical, and optical were also discussed. An extensive literature review on the application of graphene-based composites is presented in this work. We also outlined graphene's potential in the realm of environmental purification through different techniques such as filtration, adsorption, and photocatalysis. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities of graphene and its derivatives for advanced environmental applications were reported.

Abstract:Graphene-based composites have been widely applied in environmental remediation due to the high removal capacity. However, the systematic reviews concerning application of graphene-based composites were not available for the last five years. In this review, the modification of graphene-based materials (e.g., various nanoarchitectures and hybrids (element-doped, metal oxides/ and polymer/graphene composites)) in the recent years were primarily summarized; Then, the recent advances on the environmental remediation of graphene-based composites (i.e., removal of organics (dyes, EDCs, antibiotics and others), heavy metals (Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II) and others) and radionuclides(U(VI), Sr(II), Cs(I) and others)) was described in details. In addition, the interaction mechanism between environmental pollutants and graphene-based materials (i.e., physical/chemical sorption, surface complexation and redox) was demonstrated. The current challenge and perspectives of graphene-based composites were proposed briefly. The innovation of this review is to compare the difference in removal performance of the different graphene-based materials towards various environmental pollutants. This review provides more reference significance for readers to apply graphene-based composites in actual environmental cleanup.

Abstract:Carbon-based porous materials are widely used as adsorbents due to their high adsorption capacity and unique properties such as large pore size, sizeable area-to-volume ratio, high thermal & electrical conductivity etc., to remove pollutant from water and thus helps in water remediation. Water contamination poses severe impacts on humans as well as on marine life. In this review, we studied porous carbon materials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes and activated carbon, including their synthesis, properties and wide applications in water remediation. Absorbent materials at different scales for these applications are auspicious for environmental remediation. This review also provides future endeavors of carbon porous materials towards sustainable techniques for an eco-friendly environment.

Abstract:The current review aims to summarize the ongoing advances in high-performing graphene-based ternary nanocomposites for removing cationic and anionic inorganic pollutants. Graphene derivatives are extensively utilized for the development of composites due to their high synergism with co-functional materials, rational design, flexible surface chemistry, high mobile charge carriers, improved binding properties, and many more. The past ten years have witnessed progressive research on graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in a multitude of pollution remediation applications. Therefore, the focus falls on understanding how these ternary nanocomposites are tailored to capture the inorganic cationic and anionic contaminants with particular emphasis on graphene derivatives as base matrix and filler. The review investigates the synthesis, categorization, and characterization techniques of graphene-based ternary composites. Besides, the study broadens the understanding of the binding mechanism of the pollutants onto graphene ternary composites. The review also assesses the separation and recycling efficacy of the composites in detail. The future prospects in improving the practical application of the ternary systems also have been discussed. The comprehensive review on graphene based ternary systems detailing their structural and functional aspects, as well as their performance as inorganic decontaminants can provide deep insights for researchers in improvising wastewater treatment technologies.

Abstract:Graphene is a two-dimensional nanomaterial with huge surface area, high carrier mobility and high mechanical strength. Because of its great potential in nanotechnology and environmental protection, it has attracted much attention in environmental and energy fields since its discovery in 2004. Although graphene is a star material, many reviews have introduced its use in terms of energy, the research progress in the field of environment, especially water pollution control, has been rarely reported. Here, we review exhaustively the research progress of graphene-based materials in environmental pollution remediation in the past ten years. Firstly, the advantages and classification of graphene were introduced. Secondly, the research progress and main achievements of graphene and its composites in the fields of photocatalytic degradation, pollutant adsorption and water treatment were emphatically described, and the mechanism of action in the above fields was summarized. Finally, we discuss the problems existing in the preparation and summarize the application of graphene in the environment.

Abstract:Nanostructured photocatalysts have always offered opportunities to solve issues concerned with the environmental challenges caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization. These materials, due to their tunable physicochemical characteristics, are capable of providing a clean and sustainable ecosystem to humanity. One of the current thriving research focuses of visible-light-driven photocatalysts is on the nanocomposites of titanium dioxide (TiO2) with carbon nanostructures, especially graphene. Coupling TiO2 with graphene has proven more active by photocatalysis than TiO2 alone. It is generally considered that graphene sheets act as an electron acceptor facilitating the transfer and separation of photogenerated electrons during TiO2 excitation, thereby reducing electron-hole recombination. This study briefly reviews the fundamental mechanism and interfacial charge-transfer dynamics in TiO2/graphene nanocomposites. Design strategies of various graphene-based hybrids are highlighted along with some specialized synthetic routes adopted to attain preferred properties. Importantly, the enhancing interfacial charge transfer of photogenerated e¯CB through the graphene layers by morphology orientation of TiO2, predominated exposure of their high energy crystal facets, defect engineering, enhancing catalytic sites in graphene, constructing dedicated architectures, tuning the nanomaterial dimensionality at the interface, and employing the synergism adopted through various modifications, are systematically compiled. Portraying the significance of these photocatalytic hybrids in environmental remediation, important applications including air and water purification, self-cleaning surfaces, H2 production, and CO2 reduction to desired fuels, are addressed.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) have attracted increasing interests of the scientific community due to their unique physicochemical properties and their applications in biotechnology, biomedicine, bioengineering, disease diagnosis and therapy. Although a large amount of researches have been conducted on these novel nanomaterials, limited comprehensive reviews are published on their biomedical applications and potential environmental and human health effects. The present research aimed at addressing this knowledge gap by examining and discussing: (1) the history, synthesis, structural properties and recent developments of GBNs for biomedical applications; (2) GBNs uses as therapeutics, drug/gene delivery and antibacterial materials; (3) GBNs applications in tissue engineering and in research as biosensors and bioimaging materials; and (4) GBNs potential environmental effects and human health risks. It also discussed the perspectives and challenges associated with the biomedical applications of GBNs.

Abstract:The unique two-dimensional structure of graphene containing large surface area, high conductivity, and good physicochemical stability brought a new era in science and technology for scientists and researchers. The intent of this review is to focus on advanced applications of graphene and its related composites in a variety of fields. Starting with a brief introduction of graphene, the review summarizes the major concerns associated with different synthesis methods. Numerous top-down and bottom-up approaches have been developed for reasonable graphene synthesis. Effects of the number of layers on the performance of graphene were also identified as another key area of research. Different techniques for characterization are used to determine the number of layers, thickness and quality of graphene. Graphene properties such as high electrical and thermal conductivity, high optical, excellent mechanical strength, etc., have been summarized. Also, description of features and factors affecting the properties are described in detail. Graphene-based materials have been extensively investigated and discussed especially for energy, environmental and biomedical applications. Graphene and its derivatives are extensively gaining interest as electrode materials for energy storage/conversions. Current developments of energy storage/conversion applications, focusing on supercapacitors, batteries and solar cells, are studied in detail.

Abstract:<p>Graphene possesses many superior properties which make it an ideal matrix to support semiconductors. Recently, graphene/semiconductor composites have been applied increasingly in environmental remediation and energy production. This review provided a general overview of the latest research results of graphene/semiconductor composites nanocatalysts. Firstly, synthetic methods of graphene/semiconductor composites were summarized. The roles of graphene in promoting semiconductor photocatalytic performance including increasing the adsorption of reactants, expanding the range of light absorption and intensity, acting as a photosensitizer and electron transfer medium were then emphasized. Next, the performance and mechanisms in pollutants removal, disinfection, hydrogen evolution, CO<sub>2</sub> reduction, selective oxidation, nitroaromatics reduction, sensing, supercapacitors and other fields were presented. Besides, the toxicity of graphene and graphene/semiconductor composites was also introduced to help understand the impact on living systems of the environment. Finally, perspectives and challenges of graphene/semiconductor composites for future development were proposed. This review gives a comprehensive and updated overview of graphene/semiconductor composites for environmental and energy applications and is expected to shed light on the further study in this exciting area.</p>

Abstract:Just as graphene triggered a new gold rush, three-dimensional graphene-based macrostructures (3D GBM) have been recognized as one of the most promising strategies for bottom-up nanotechnology and become one of the most active research fields during the last four years. In general, the basic structural features of 3D GBM, including its large surface area, which enhances the opportunity to contact pollutants, and its well-defined porous structure, which facilitates the diffusion of pollutant molecules into the 3D structure, enable 3D GBM to be an ideal material for pollutant management due to its excellent capabilities and easy recyclability. This review aims to describe the environmental applications and mechanisms of 3D GBM and provide perspective. Thus, the excellent performance of 3D GBM in environmental pollutant adsorption, transformation and detection are reviewed. Based on the structures and properties of 3D GBM, the removal mechanisms for dyes, oils, organic solvents, heavy metals, and gas pollutants are highlighted. We attempt to establish "structure-property-application" relationships for environmental pollution management using 3D GBM. Approaches involving tunable synthesis and decoration to regulate the micro-, meso-, and macro-structure and the active sites are also reviewed. The high selectivity, fast rate, convenient management, device applications and recycling utilization of 3D GBM are also emphasized.

Abstract:This review describes the recent advancements in the titanium dioxide/graphene‐based nanocomposites in environmental applications, emphasising their improved photocatalytic performance and ability to degrade pollutants. It explores recent progress in synthesis methods, the synergistic interactions between TiO2 and graphene, and structural optimizations aimed at improving environmental remediation. Furthermore, it discusses challenges and future directions to advance their practical applications. Nanostructured‐based photocatalysts have always exhibited the potential to solve various environmental issues resulting from global urbanization and industrialization. The creation of nanostructured materials has given humans access to various techniques for treating the numerous inorganic and organic contaminants found in wastewater from multiple sources. Due to their exceptional photocatalytic activity, semiconductor materials, among various other materials have different environmental uses. Studying nanocomposites of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and carbon‐based material, particularly graphene‐based material, is one of the burgeoning research areas of visible‐light‐driven photocatalysts. It has been demonstrated that the combination of graphene‐based material with titanium dioxide is more successful than titanium dioxide alone in photocatalysis. TiO2/graphene‐based nanocomposites stand out due to their superior physical and chemical characteristics, such as their moderate band gap, high specific surface area, nontoxic, low cost, high corrosion resistance, high photoactivity, stability, and ease of handling in various configurations. Designing high‐performance TiO2/graphene‐based photocatalysts has drawn more and more attention. This study has evaluated TiO2/graphene‐based nanocomposites for photocatalytic environmental applications from 2022 to 2024. These nanocomposites' diverse preparation methods have been discussed. The recent discoveries in TiO2/graphene‐based nanocomposite composites and their uses in photocatalysis, such as wastewater treatment to remove contaminants and photoconversion of CO2 into renewable fuels are also briefly discussed in this review.

Abstract:In this population driven society, the major causes of environmental pollution are modern agricultural practices and intensified industrialization. These kind of economic practices lead to excessive deposition of residual pesticides and heavy metals in both soil and water. Due to their quicker advancement in in-situ and point-of-care technologies, electrochemical sensing methods have chosen as best for detecting these contaminants. 'Graphene', a wonder material possessing excellent physiochemical properties when utilized as an electrode for sensing, enables quicker diffusion of target analytes. Graphene-based nanocomposites, when used as a working electrodes, allow for detection of environmental contaminants even at trace levels. Presently, scientists are working to develop an electrochemical sensor which facilitates accuracy and high sensitivity. This review highlights the performance of graphene composites in detecting various environmental pollutants using electrochemical sensing strategies. Further, comparative study on its methods and techniques, existing problems with some solutions and future aspects are briefly discussed.

Abstract:With superior electrical/thermal conductivities and mechanical properties, two dimensional (2D) graphene has become one of the most intensively explored carbon allotropes in materials science. To exploit the inherent properties fully, 2D graphene sheets are often fabricated or assembled into functional architectures (e.g. hydrogels, aerogels) with desired three dimensional (3D) interconnected porous microstructures. The 3D graphene based materials show many excellent characteristics including increased active material per projected area, accessible mass transport or storage, electro/thermo conductivity, chemical/electrochemical stability and flexibility. It has paved the way for practical requirements in electronics, adsorption as well as catalysis related system. This review shows an extensive overview of the main principles and the recent synthetic technologies about fabricating various innovative 3D graphene based materials. Subsequently, recent progresses in electrochemical energy devices (lithium/lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar cells) and hydrogen energy generation/storage are explicitly discussed. The up to date advances for pollutants detection and environmental remediation are also reviewed. Finally, challenges and outlooks in materials development for energy and environment are suggested.

Abstract:Graphene, a 2D sp2 hybridized carbon sheet consisting of a honeycomb network, is the building block of graphite. However, the inability to mass produce high-quality graphene affordably currently limits the practical application of the material. Researchers are continuously working on advancing graphene synthesis methods to alleviate these limitations. Therefore, this review looks at the overview of established graphene synthesis methods and characterization techniques, and then highlights an in-depth review of graphene production through flash joule heating. The environmental concerns related to graphene synthesis are also presented in this review paper.

Abstract:Recently, graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials have emerged as advanced carbon functional materials with specialized unique electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. These properties have made graphene an exceptional material for a wide range of promising applications in biological and non-biological fields. The present review illustrates the structural modifications of pristine graphene resulting in a wide variety of derivatives. The significance of substitutional doping with alkali-metals, alkaline earth metals, and III–VII group elements apart from the transition metals of the periodic table is discussed. The paper reviews various chemical and physical preparation routes of graphene, its derivatives and graphene-based nanocomposites at room and elevated temperatures in various solvents. The difficulty in dispersing it in water and organic solvents make it essential to functionalize graphene and its derivatives. Recent trends and advances are discussed at length. Controlled reduction reactions in the presence of various dopants leading to nanocomposites along with suitable surfactants essential to enhance its potential applications in the semiconductor industry and biological fields are discussed in detail.
