Abstract:In the central nervous system of birds, testosterone is converted into 5β-dihydrotestosterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, androsterone and oestradiol. Quantitatively the most important pathway is the 5β reduction, generally considered to be the biological way of inactivating testosterone; according to this viewpoint, the 5β-reduced metabolites of testosterone are inactive in the control of gonadotropin secretion and sexual behaviour. Conversion of testosterone into 5β-reduced metabolites is negatively correlated to sexual maturation in the starling, cockerel and quail. Moreover, the 5β-reductase activity in the preoptic area of the dove hypothalamus is lower than in adjacent areas not directly involved in sexual behaviour. No experiment has so far been reported about the regulation mechanism of the 5β-reductase itself. Very recently it was claimed that 5β reductase in the cockerel is greatly increased following thyroidectomy and the effect reversed by thyroxine administration. Consequently it has been suggested that 5β-reductase activity and thyroid function might be related in birds.
