Abstract:Nickel electrodes are widely used in industrial water electrolysis cells for electrochemical production of hydrogen, as well as for battery applications. The use of Ni/based composites instead of pure Ni is one of the methods to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of Ni electrode material. In this paper, composite Ni /TiO2 layers were electrodeposited from a conventional Watts' electrolyte containing TiO2 powder, and their electrochemical properties towards hydrogen evolution reaction were investigated and compared with pure Ni layers under the same conditions. The composite layers are characterized by enhanced electrochemical activity with respect to hydrogen evolution reaction in an alkaline electrolyte - they feature a higher hydrogen evolution rate, as well as a lower overpotential as compared with pure Ni layers. The increased activity of Ni/ TiO2 composite layers could be related with the developed and increased electrode surface, as well as well as with the presence of Ti, incorporated in the Ni matrix. In addition, Ni/TiO2 layers show faster and more extensive hydrogenation than pure Ni deposits.
