Margaret's interests are broad ranging and include: assessment in university education,feedback in healthcare contexts,simulation and learning in a digital world.Jessica Holloway is a Senior Research Fellow within the Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education (ILSTE) at the Australian Catholic University. Her research draws on political theory and policy sociology to ask how metrics,data and digital tools produce new conditions,practices and subjectivities,especially in relation to teachers and schools. Her recent books include Expertise (2023,with Jessica Gerrard) and Metrics,Standards and Alignment in Teacher Policy: Critiquing Fundamentalism and Imagining Pluralism (2021).Rebecca Olson is an Associate Professor of Sociology,Director of SocioHealthLab and Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Social Science at the University of Queensland. As a cutting-edge translational qualitative researcher,Olson collaborates with health professionals,health professional educators and emotions scholars,bringing sociological insight to addressing complex healthcare challenges.Naomi Winstone is Professor of Educational Psychology and Director of the Surrey Institute of Education at the University of Surrey,UK. She is also an Honorary Professor in the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University,Australia. Her research focuses on the processing and impact of instructional feedback and the influence of dominant discourses of assessment and feedback in policy and practice on the positioning of educators and students in feedback processes.

Abstract:In this article, we explore the concept of belonging and its utility as a means for understanding academics' experiences of working in the academy. Transformative changes have reorientated academic work in recent years and continue to do so as we grapple with what it means to work and live in a post-digital, post-covid, world. We engage a collective biography methodology to highlight the embodied spatial-material assemblages in which belonging can be (un)made, the ways in which belonging may stick, slip and slide, as well how we might support colleagues to deal with the fragility and fluidity of academic work. Collectively, we sketch a portrait of the currents, spaces and relations of belonging that sit uncomfortably alongside common conceptions of belonging as linear, or as an internal, individual, emotion. This study therefore offers new possibilities for enhanced understandings of belonging as mobile, flickering and processual, that are generative within education and beyond.
