Abstract:Muscles and joints make highly coordinated motion, which can be partly mimicked to drive robots or facilitate activities. However, most cases primarily employ actuators enabling simple deformations. Therefore, a mature artificial motor system requires many actuators assembled with jointed structures to accomplish complex motions, posing limitations and challenges to the fabrication, integration, and applicability of the system. Here, a holistic artificial muscle with integrated light-addressable nodes, using one-step laser printing from a bilayer structure of poly(methyl methacrylate) and graphene oxide compounded with gold nanorods (AuNRs), is reported. Utilizing the synergistic effect of the AuNRs with high plasmonic property and wavelength-selectivity as well as graphene with good flexibility and thermal conductivity, the artificial muscle can implement full-function motility without further integration, which is reconfigurable through wavelength-sensitive light activation. A biomimetic robot and artificial hand are demonstrated, showcasing functionalized control, which is desirable for various applications, from soft robotics to human assists.

Abstract:This chapter explains the basic concept of a flexible mechanical joint for making human exoskeleton based on a low-melting-point alloy phase change effect. With the liquid-solid phase change capability, this unique joint can easily switch between its flexible and rigid states. In addition, the liquid metal electrode can be an important highly conductive and super compliant electrode for making artificial muscles with the unique capability of two-dimensional in-plane self-healing. Some of such opportunities were discussed.

Abstract:The room temperature liquid metal is quickly emerging as an important functional material in a variety of areas like chip cooling, 3D printing or printed electronics etc. With diverse capabilities in electrical, thermal and flowing behaviors, such fluid owns many intriguing properties that had never been anticipated before. Here, we show a group of unconventional phenomena occurring on the liquid metal objects. Through applying electrical field on the liquid metals immersed in water, a series of complex transformation behaviors such as self-assembling of a sheet of liquid metal film into a single sphere, quick mergences of separate metal droplets, controlled self-rotation and planar locomotion of liquid metal objects can be realized. Meanwhile, it was also found that two accompanying water vortexes were induced and reliably swirled near the rotating liquid metal sphere. Further, effects of the shape, size, voltage, orientation and geometries of the electrodes to control the liquid metal transformers were clarified. Such events are hard to achieve otherwise on rigid metal or conventional liquid spheres. This finding has both fundamental and practical significances which suggest a generalized way of making smart soft machine, collecting discrete metal fluids, as well as flexibly manipulating liquid metal objects including accompanying devices.

Abstract:Unlike conventional rigid machines, soft robots generally have unique operation styles that rely heavily on soft matter engineering and smart material systems. Owing to the superior merits of both metals and fluids, liquid metal smart materials are increasingly being innovatively used as soft actuators and sensors to construct soft robots. To promote further development and prosperity in this field, this review organizes and summarizes the typical progress in liquid metal smart materials, with a special focus on their robotic response behaviors. In particular, the article emphasizes the concept of smart composite systems consisting of liquid metals and synergistic substances (e.g., solutions, particles, and polymers). The response behaviors of liquid metal smart materials under the actions of external factors (electricity, magnetism, ultrasound, light, heat, etc.) are examined and the smart properties occurring during these responses, such as motion, transformation, self‐organization, adaptive healing, and autonomous sensing, are identified. Furthermore, soft actuators, control systems, and robots based on liquid metal smart materials are summarized and elaborated upon. Finally, the potential directions worth pursuing and challenges are outlined. It is expected that this review will stimulate further investigations into liquid metal smart materials with the aim of building a new generation of soft robots.

Abstract:Conventional robots can accomplish defined tasks but often encounter troubles when handling irregular objects under unstructured environments. Soft robots, with supercompliance, large transformation, and high environmental adaptability, hold big promise for delicate manipulations such as grasping soft objects or delivering precious biomedical samples. Even a step further, if soft robots are endowed with the extraordinary behaviors to freely transform among different morphologies and constructions just like those already existing in literature and science fiction films, more fantastic challenges can be tackled. Representing one of the most potential robotic soft materials, liquid metals have been given sufficient expectations on realizing the transformable machines that might fundamentally reform modern daily life. Accordingly, inspiring discoveries on controllable transformations of the liquid metal have been obtained surprisingly and tremendous efforts have been made over the past decade, indicating a significant step toward such a formidable dream. It is clear that the discovery of liquid metal-based large-scaled transformation with several hundred-fold fast change on the surface area opens a brand new direction of manufacturing future transformable machines. Even unusual findings on a self-fueled liquid metal with biological life-like behavior to freely explore the unknown space that solves the energy supply issue also came into being, holding big promise for making bionic transformable robots. This Account aims to systematically sort out the developmental history of liquid metal transformable machines with special focus on the fundamental scientific discoveries, the underlying mechanisms, and the potential applied scenarios based on liquid metal enabled solid–liquid hybrids. The fantastic properties and unique transformation capabilities of liquid metals have built the basis for a new era of designing soft robotics and we believe that liquid metal transformable machines are evolving into new forms of soft robots.

Abstract:Liquid metals, with their unique combination of electrical and mechanical properties, offer great opportunities for actuation based on surface tension modulation. Thanks to the scaling laws of surface tension, which can be electrochemically controlled at low voltages, liquid metal actuators stand out from other soft actuators for their remarkable characteristics such as high contractile strain rates and higher work densities at smaller length scales. This review summarizes the principles of liquid metal actuators and discusses their performance as well as theoretical pathways towards higher performances. The objective is to provide a comparative analysis of the ongoing development of liquid metal actuators. We analyze the design principles of the liquid metal actuators, including low‐level elemental principles (kinematics and electrochemistry), mid‐level structural principles (reversibility, integrity, and scalability), and high‐level functionalities. We review a wide range of practical use cases of liquid metal actuators from robotic locomotion and object manipulation to logic and computation. From an energy perspective, strategies are compared for coupling the liquid metal actuators with an energy source towards fully untethered robots. Abstract:Making soft robots that can flexibly transform among different morphologies has long been a dream in both science and engineering areas. With outstanding versatile capabilities, liquid metals are opening breakthrough strategies for molding future smart soft robots that had never been anticipated before or hardly achievable by a rigid metal or conventional material. All the evidences collected so far pointed out that liquidmetal machine is evolving via a rather quick way. The latest discoveries on a group of very fundamental phenomena of liquidmetals and technological advances thus enabled significantly strengthened this endeavor. Clearly, combining allied components with the liquid metal systems is offering many brand new machine roles as well as incubating future highly advanced robots. In fact, capabilities as offered by liquid metals are far much profound than one can expect. There is plenty of space to explore in the area. This chapter gives a brief overview of soft robots and some unconventional opportunities that liquid metal could provide for innovating the soft machine science and technology.

Abstract:Liquid metal is a liquid-state metallic material with a low melting point at or around room temperature. Owing to their high thermal or electrical conductivity, low viscosity and superior fluidity, liquid metals are emerging as a highly desirable candidate in a broad array of areas, such as flexible electronics, thermal management, soft machines and biomedical materials. However, bulk liquid metal is not readily utilized because of its high surface tension and large dimension-induced dexterity limitations. To address this challenge, liquid metals have been innovated with micro/nanotechnology to endow the bulk liquid metals with remarkably diversified performances. These new functional materials not only possess the softness of classical liquid metals but also have many outstanding properties, including great thermal conductivity, self-healing ability and stimuli-responsive deformability. Compared to rigid inorganic micro/nanoscale materials, soft liquid metal micro/nanoparticles demonstrate their unconventionally superior flexibility, compliance and tunability. This review is dedicated to summarize the state-of-the-art progress in fabricating methods, highlight unique features, and discuss applications of liquid metal micro/nanoparticles in biomedicine, soft electronics, thermal management and soft motors. Future outlooks, including both opportunities and scientific challenges of liquid metal micro/nanoparticles, are also presented here.

Abstract:An artificial muscle capable of shape programmability, deformation-locking capacity without needing continuous external energy, and self-sensing capability is highly desirable yet challenging in applications of reconfigurable antenna, deployable space structures, etc. Inspired by coupled behavior of the muscles, bones, and nerve system of mammals, a multifunctional artificial muscle based on polydopamine-coated liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) and low-melting point alloy (LMPA) in the form of a concentric tube/rod is proposed. Thereinto, the outer LCE is used for reversible contraction and recovery (i.e., muscle function); the inner LMPA in the resolidification state is adopted for deformation locking, and that in the melt state is adopted for angle variation monitoring by detecting resistance change (i.e., bones and nerve functions, respectively). The proposed artificial muscle demonstrates multiple performances, including controllable bending angle, position, and direction; deformation locking for supporting heavy objects; and real-time monitoring of angle variation, which also provides a straightforward and effective approach for designing soft devices.

In article number 2404330, Nan Li, Jing Liu, and co‐workers systematically outlined a blueprint for constructing soft humanoid robots thus enabled. The versatile roles of liquid metals in making soft actuators, sensors, batteries, logic devices, deformable bones and the bioinspired integrated system are summarized. Such designing theory would help revolutionize the working and functioning of new generation humanoid robots.

Soft Artificial Muscle of Poly(vinyl Chloride) Gel with an Imperceptible Liquid Metal Electrode

Abstract:Electrodes with high electrical conductivity, yet good flexibility and mechanical compliance, are critical for electroactive artificial muscles. Herein, a promising liquid metal (LM) electrode is proposed by transforming eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) LM with high surface tension into paste-like LM with solid Ga2O3 shells. The developed compliant LM electrode not only shows high conductivity and negligible additional stiffness but also displays excellent electrical stability during cyclic actuation. Based on the LM electrode, the poly(vinyl chloride) gel (PVCG) artificial muscle developed exhibits the maximum actuation strain of 18.7% at a low electric field strength of 9 V μm-1 and maintains excellent durability without obvious performance attenuation after 10,000 s. A comparison shows that the as-developed PVCG artificial muscle is superior over that based on widely used carbon electrodes. Moreover, an artificial upper limb and crawling worm were manufactured to explore the great potential of PVCG artificial muscle in the robotic field. In addition, the practical application demonstration of the PVCG artificial muscle in the biomimetics field is also successfully fulfilled through the design of reasonable structures. Due to its easy fabrication, excellent electrical conductivity, and high mechanical compliance, the newly developed LM electrode is promising for high-performance PVCG artificial muscles in bionic robots.

Abstract:Simulating nature to manufacture self-powered device or motor has been an important goal in science and engineering. Conventional spontaneous motions of an abject were generally achieved through the Marangoni flow of organic liquid or water solution. Regarding the metallic materials, mercury had ever been developed as beating heart as a kind of self-propulsion example. However, the serious safety concern of such medium restricts its extensive application. From an alternative, Yi et al. (Breathing to harvest energy as a mechanism toward making a liquid metal beating heart, 6: 94692-94698, 2016 [1]) discovered an important mechanism to realize gallium-based liquid metal beating heart through introducing a breathing mechanism in analogy to living organisms. With the unique configuration of a semisubmerged liquid metal droplet partially immersed in alkaline solution, such a system would produce a surface tension gradient perpendicular to the three-phase contact line which subsequently leads to the oscillation of the droplet and the surrounding solution. This finding suggests a feasible way to fabricate self-oscillating liquid metal motors without external electricity or fuels input. Except for such air driving mechanism, more environmental factors such as heat can also be applied to power the liquid metal system given appropriate designing. The present chapter illustrates the basic behaviors of such environment enabled liquid metal machines and their self-actuating driving mechanisms.

Abstract:Rigid solenoid coils have long been indispensable in modern intelligent devices. However, their sparse structure and challenging preparation of flexible coils for soft robots impose limitations. Here, a transformable 3D curved high-density liquid metal coil (HD-LMC) is introduced that surpasses the structural density level of enameled wire. The fabrication technique employed for high-density channels in elastomers is universally applicable. Such HD-LMCs demonstrated excellent performance in pressure, temperature, non-contact distance sensors, and near-field communication. Soft electromagnetic actuators thus achieved significantly improved the electromagnetic force and power density. Moreover, precise control of swinging tail motion enables a bionic pufferfish to swim. Finally, HD-LMC is further utilized to successfully implement a soft rotary robot with integrated sensing and actuation capabilities. This groundbreaking research provides a theoretical and experimental basis for expanding the applications of liquid metal-based multi-dimensional complex flexible electronics and is expected to be widely used in liquid metal-integrated robotic systems.

Abstract:Artificial muscles are of significant value in robotic applications. Rigid artificial muscles possess a strong load-bearing capacity, while their deformation is small; soft artificial muscles can be shifted to a large degree; however, their load-bearing capacity is weak. Furthermore, artificial muscles are generally controlled in an open loop due to a lack of deformation-related feedback. Human arms include muscles, bones, and nerves, which ingeniously coordinate the actuation, load-bearing, and sensory systems. Inspired by this, a soft-rigid hybrid smart artificial muscle (SRH-SAM) based on liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) and helical metal wire is proposed. The thermotropic responsiveness of the LCE is adopted for large reversible deformation, and the helical metal wire is used to fulfill high bearing capacity and electric heating function requirements. During actuation, the helical metal wire's resistance changes with the LCE's electrothermal deformation, thereby achieving deformation-sensing characteristics. Based on the proposed SRH-SAM, a reconfigurable blazed grating plane and the effective switch between attachment and detachment in bionic dry adhesion are accomplished. The SRH-SAM opens a new avenue for designing smart artificial muscles and can promote the development of artificial muscle-based devices.
An ultrahigh fatigue resistant liquid crystal elastomer-based material enabled by liquid metal

Abstract:The low crosslink density characteristic of liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) materials causes poor fatigue resistance performance, which has seriously plagued their prospects in industrial applications. Here we report that the introduction of 5 wt% liquid metal nanodroplets (average diameter: ca. 195 nm) into the LCE network can dramatically reinforce the corresponding composite’s mechanical properties, in particular ultrahigh fatigue resistance, capable of bearing unprecedented 10,000 tensile cycles within a large range of strain amplitude up to 70% and 2000 times of continuous actuating deformations. Furthermore, this liquid metal-incorporated LCE composite material exhibits large actuation stroke (maximum actuation strain: 55%), high actuation stress (blocking stress: 1.13 MPa), fully reversible thermal/photo-actuation functions, and self-healing ability at moderate temperatures, which qualifies the composite material for high-load actuators.

Abstract:The continuous advancement of materials and technologies has significantly propelled the progress of human civilization. However, the more humans achieved, the more bottlenecks we encounter which span from space exploration, cutting edge advanced coming to the clinical therapy of a single malignant tumor. The revolution to break through such barriers lies in the identification of extreme materials that can easily tackle the existing challenges and fundamentally extend the technological boundary, thus potentially leading to the creation of entirely new devices and systems. The emergence of room-temperature liquid metals (LMs) with their unique characteristics and diverse unconventional capabilities distinguished from traditionally developed electrical, soft, and fluidic materials, is anticipated to revolutionize a broad range of interdisciplinary fields. This review is dedicated to extracting the extreme features of LMs and systematizing their distinct applied scenarios from pervasive electronic fabrication to thermal management, and healthcare systems until human-like transformable robotics. The prospects and challenges of LM extreme materials are outlined. It is expected that further investigations on the clarified scientific and technological categories lying behind will contribute well to the next generation human civilization in the coming time.

Abstract:Biodevices are crucial for monitoring vital physiological signals, managing chronic health conditions, developing artificial organs for assisting people with disabilities, and conducting various clinical and surgical procedures. However, existing biodevices are mostly composed of rigid components, which can cause discomfort to the user, whereas the high stiffness of implants is known to be the major cause of inflammation and scarring. Gallium-based liquid metals are intrinsically soft and possess desirable properties, including low toxicity, high conductivity, and deformability, which make them ideally suited for developing soft, deformable, reconfigurable, and healable biodevices. Herein, recent advancements in the emerging field of liquid-metal-based biodevices are discussed. This includes a description of the properties of gallium-based liquid metals which make them so distinct from conventional materials, a brief outline of various techniques devised for fabrication of liquid-metal-based devices/structures, and an overview of the diverse range of wearable or implantable liquid-metal-enabled biodevices. The outlook and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Artificial muscles that can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy promise broad scientific and technological applications. However, existing electro-driven artificial muscles have been plagued with problems that hinder their practical applications: large electro-mechanical attenuation during deformation, high-driving voltages, small actuation strain, and low power density. Here, we design and create novel electro-thermal-driven artificial muscles rationally composited by hierarchically structured carbon nanotube (HS-CNT) networks and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), which possess adaptive sandwiched nanotube networks with angulated-scissor-like microstructures, thus effectively addressing above problems. These HS-CNT/LCE artificial muscles demonstrate not only large strain (>40%), but also remarkable conductive robustness (R/R0 < 1.03 under actuation), excellent Joule heating efficiency (≈ 233 °C at 4 V), and high load-bearing capacity (R/R0 < 1.15 at 4000 times its weight loaded). In addition, our artificial muscles exhibit real-muscle-like morphing intelligence that enables preventing mechanical damage in response to excessively heavyweight loading. These high-performance artificial muscles uniquely combining omnidirectional stretchability, robust electrothermal actuation, low driving voltage, and powerful mechanical output would exert significant technological impacts on engineering applications such as soft robotics and wearable flexible electronics.
