Abstract:The emergent expansion in quantum dots (QDs) and photodetectors exploration have unwrapped plenteous prospects in various fields like LEDs, lasers, bioimaging, sensors, solar cells, quantum computing, single-electron transistors, etc. due to their tailorable optoelectronic properties. Though several types of QD photodetectors have been investigated nowadays, self-assembled QD photodetectors are getting a huge response from the field of optoelectronics. Self-assembled QDs are nothing but orderly artificial atoms grown by lattice mismatch concept, and they have numerous applications due to their unique delta density states, lower threshold current density, and higher differential gain. Thereby, photodetection based on self-assembled quantum dots is able to tie the advantages of both conventional photodetector and self-assembled quantum dot in an unprecedented way. The optical transition between the inter-sublevels and the three-dimensional quantum confinement effect in self-assembled QDs make them distinctive in their field. Molecular beam epitaxy, high-temperature droplet epitaxy, and Stranski–Krastanov growth are the different types of fabrication methods which are implemented to fabricate self-assembled QD photodetector. This book chapter provides a detailed audit on the recent advances, fabrication, applications, and various heterostructures using quantum dot photodetectors and their ceaseless application in the field of optoelectronics.
