Abstract:Earth's Critical Zone (CZ), the near‐surface layer where rock is weathered and landscapes co‐evolve with life, is profoundly influenced by the type of underlying bedrock. Previous studies employing the CZ framework have focused primarily on landscapes dominated by silicate rocks. However, carbonate rocks crop out on approximately 15% of Earth's ice‐free continental surface and provide important water resources and ecosystem services to ∼1.2 billion people. Unlike silicates, carbonate minerals weather congruently and have high solubilities and rapid dissolution kinetics, enabling the development of large, interconnected pore spaces and preferential flow paths that restructure the CZ. Here we review the state of knowledge of the carbonate CZ, exploring parameters that produce contrasts in the CZ in different carbonate settings and identifying important open questions about carbonate CZ processes. We introduce the concept of a carbonate‐silicate CZ spectrum and examine whether current conceptual models of the CZ, such as the conveyor model, can be applied to carbonate landscapes. We argue that, to advance beyond site‐specific understanding and develop a more general conceptual framework for the role of carbonates in the CZ, we need integrative studies spanning both the carbonate‐silicate spectrum and a range of carbonate settings.

Abstract:The Earth Critical Zone (ECZ) is a captivating realm encompassing interconnected processes between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere that influence and support systems for life and shape the surface of our planet. A profound grasp of the ECZ is vital for comprehending the diverse aspects of its properties, such as soil health, nutrient cycling, hydrological cycling, and socioeconomics. In alignment with this vision, an open-access journal, “Earth Critical Zone”, has been inaugurated. This journal provides a valuable platform for scientists and researchers to disseminate their findings, share innovative ideas, and exchange new methodologies related to the intricate processes occurring within the ECZ. In this context, we present a comprehensive overview of the journal's conceptual framework, the current state-of-the-art and emerging areas of research and its focal areas of interest. We extend a warm invitation for the submission of impactful papers. Join us in exploring the dynamic landscapes of the ECZ, wherein the convergence of knowledge and inquiry shapes our understanding of this crucial space within which we live.

Abstract:Details of Earth's shallow subsurface—a key component of the critical zone (CZ)—are largely obscured because making direct observations with sufficient density to capture natural characteristic spatial variability in physical properties is difficult. Yet this inaccessible region of the CZ is fundamental to processes that support ecosystems, society, and the environment. Geophysical methods provide a means for remotely examining CZ form and function over length scales that span centimeters to kilometers. Here we present a review highlighting the application of geophysical methods to CZ science research questions. In particular, we consider the application of geophysical methods to map the geometry of structural features such as regolith thickness, lithological boundaries, permafrost extent, snow thickness, or shallow root zones. Combined with knowledge of structure, we discuss how geophysical observations are used to understand CZ processes. Fluxes between snow, surface water, and groundwater affect weathering, groundwater resources, and chemical and nutrient exports to rivers. The exchange of gas between soil and the atmosphere have been studied using geophysical methods in wetland areas. Indirect geophysical methods are a natural and necessary complement to direct observations obtained by drilling or field mapping. Direct measurements should be used to calibrate geophysical estimates, which can then be used to extrapolate interpretations over larger areas or to monitor changing processes over time. Advances in geophysical instrumentation and computational approaches for integrating different types of data have great potential to fill gaps in our understanding of the shallow subsurface portion of the CZ and should be integrated where possible in future CZ research. Abstract:The Chilean Coastal Cordillera features a spectacular climate and vegetation gradient, ranging from arid and unvegetated areas in the north to humid and forested areas in the south. The EarthShape project ("Earth Surface Shaping by Biota") uses this natural gradient to investigate how climate and biological processes shape the Earth's surface. We explored the Critical Zone, the Earth's uppermost layer, in four key sites located in desert, semidesert, Mediterranean, and temperate climate zones of the Coastal Cordillera, with the focus on weathering of granitic rock. Here, we present first results from 16 approximately 2 m-deep regolith profiles to document: (1) architecture of weathering zone; (2) degree and rate of rock weathering, thus the release of mineral-derived nutrients to the terrestrial ecosystems; (3) denudation rates; and (4) microbial abundances of bacteria and archaea in the saprolite. From north to south, denudation rates from cosmogenic nuclides are similar to 10 t km(-2) yr(-1) at the arid Pan de Aziicar site, similar to 20 t km(2) yr(-1) at the semi-arid site of Santa Gracia, -60 t km(-2) yr(-1) at the Mediterranean climate site of La Campana, and similar to 30 t km(-2) yr(-1) at the humid site of Nahuelbuta. A and B horizons increase in thickness and elemental depletion or enrichment increases from north (similar to 26 degrees S) to south (similar to 38 degrees S) in these horizons. Differences in the degree of chemical weathering, quantified by the chemical depletion fraction (CDF), are significant only between the arid and sparsely vegetated site and the other three sites. Differences in the CDF between the sites, and elemental depletion within the sites are sometimes smaller than the variations induced by the bedrock heterogeneity. Microbial abundances (bacteria and archaea) in saprolite substantially increase from the arid to the semi-arid sites. With this study, we provide a comprehensive dataset characterizing the Critical Zone geochemistry in the Chilean Coastal Cordillera. This dataset confirms climatic controls on weathering and denudation rates and provides prerequisites to quantify the role of biota in future studies.

Abstract:The concept of a critical zone (CZ) supporting terrestrial life has fostered groundbreaking interdisciplinary science addressing complex interactions among water, soil, rock, air, and life near Earth's surface. Pioneering work has focused on the CZ in areas with residual soils and steady-state or erosional topography. CZ evolution in these areas is conceptualized as progressive weathering of local bedrock (e.g., in the flow-through reactor model). However, this model is not applicable to areas in which weathering profiles form in transported materials including the formerly glaciated portion of the Central Lowland of North America. We present a new conceptual model of CZ evolution in landscapes impacted by continental glaciation based on investigations at three study sites in the Intensively Managed Landscapes Critical Zone Observatory (IML-CZO) The IML-CZO is devoted to the study of CZ processes in a region characterized by thick surficial deposits resulting from multiple continental glaciations, with bedrock at depths of up to 150 m. Here the physical (glacial ice, loess, developing soil profiles) and biological (microbes, tundra, forest, prairie) components of the CZ vary significantly in time. Moreover, the spatial relationships between mineral components of the CZ record a history of glacial-interglacial cycles and landscape evolution. We present cross-sections from IML-CZO sites to provide specific examples of how environmental change is recorded by the structure of the mineral components of the CZ. We build on these examples to create an idealized model of CZ evolution through a glacial cycle that represents the IML-CZO sites and other areas of low relief that have experienced continental glaciation. In addition, we identify two main characteristics of CZ structure which should be included in a conceptual model of CZ development in the IML-CZO and similar settings: (1) mineral components have diverse origins and transport trajectories including alteration in past CZs, and, (2) variability in climate, ecosystems, and hydrology during glacial-interglacial cycles profoundly influence the CZ composition, creating a legacy retained in its structure. This legacy is important because the current physical CZ structure influences the occurrence and rates of CZ processes, as well as future CZ responses to land use and climate change.

Abstract:Two major barriers hinder the holistic understanding of subsurface critical zone (CZ) evolution and its impacts: (a) an inability to measure, define, and share information and (b) a societal structure that inhibits inclusivity and creativity. In contrast to the aboveground portion of the CZ, which is visible and measurable, the bottom boundary is difficult to access and quantify. In the context of these barriers, we aim to expand the spatial reach of the CZ by highlighting existing and effective tools for research as well as the "human reach" of CZ science by expanding who performs such science and who it benefits. We do so by exploring the diversity of vocabularies and techniques used in relevant disciplines, defining terminology, and prioritizing research questions that can be addressed. Specifically, we explore geochemical, geomorphological, geophysical, and ecological measurements and modeling tools to estimate CZ base and thickness. We also outline the importance of and approaches to developing a diverse CZ workforce that looks like and harnesses the creativity of the society it serves, addressing historical legacies of exclusion. Looking forward, we suggest that to grow CZ science, we must broaden the physical spaces studied and their relationships with inhabitants, measure the "deep" CZ and make data accessible, and address the bottlenecks of scaling and data‐model integration. What is needed—and what we have tried to outline—are common and fundamental structures that can be applied anywhere and used by the diversity of researchers involved in investigating and recording CZ processes from a myriad of perspectives.

Ideas and perspectives: Sensing energy and matter fluxes in a biota-dominated Patagonian landscape through environmental seismology – introducing the Pumalín Critical Zone Observatory

Abstract:The coastal temperate rainforests (CTRs) of Chilean Patagonia are a valuable forest biome on Earth given their prominent role in biogeochemical cycling and the ecological value and dynamics of surface processes. The Patagonian CTRs are amongst the most carbon-rich biomes on Earth. Together with frequent landscape disturbances, these forests potentially allow for episodic and massive release or sequestration of carbon into and from the atmosphere. We argue that, despite their particular biogeographic, geochemical, and ecological roles, the Patagonian CTRs in particular and the global CTRs in general are not adequately represented in the current catalog listing critical zone observatories (CZOs). Here, we present the Pumalín CZO as the first of its kind, located in Pumalín National Park in northern Chilean Patagonia. We consider our CZO a representative end-member of undisturbed ecosystem functioning of the Patagonian CTRs. We have identified four core research themes for the Pumalín CZO around which our activities circle in an integrative, quantitative, and generic approach using a range of emerging techniques. Our methodological blend includes an environmental seismology that also fills a critical spatiotemporal scale in terms of monitoring critical zone and surface processes with a minimum intervention in those pristine forests. We aim to gain quantitative understanding of these topics: (1) carbon sink functioning; (2) biota-driven landscape evolution; (3) water, biogeological, and energy fluxes; and (4) disturbance regime understanding. Our findings highlight the multitude of active functions that trees in particular and forests in general may have on the entire cascade of surface processes and the concomitant carbon cycling. This highlights the importance of an integrated approach, i.e., "one physical system", as proposed by Richter and Billings (2015), and accounts for the recent advances in pushing nature conservation along the Chilean coast.

Abstract:Earth carbon cycle shapes the evolution of our planet and our habitats. As a key region of carbon cycle, subduction zone acts as a sole channel transporting supracrustal carbonate rocks down to the mantle, balancing carbon budget between the Earth's surface and the interior, and regulating CO2 concentration of the atmosphere. How carbonates evolve at depth is thus, a most fundamental issue in understanding carbon flux and carbon sequestration mechanism in the Earth. This study reviews prominent progresses made in the field of crystal chemistry of carbonates along subduction geotherms. It clearly finds that, in addition to common carbonates in the Earth's crust, several new polymorphs of carbonates have been discovered to be stable under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. This opens possibilities for oxidized carbon species in the deep Earth. However, metamorphic decarbonatation and reduction reactions restrict subducting carbonates to the top-mid region of the lower mantle. Specifically, subsolidus decarbonatation in the form of carbonates reacting with silicates has been proposed as an efficient process releasing CO2 from slabs to the mantle. Besides, carbonate reduction in the metal-saturated mantle likely results in generation of super-deep diamonds and a considerable degree of carbon isotope fractionation. Review of these novel findings leads us to consider three issues in the further studies, including 1) searching for new chemical forms of carbon in the mantle, 2) determining the reduction efficiency of carbonates to diamonds and the accompanying carbon isotope fractionation and 3) concerning carbon cycle in subduction of continental crust.
The Importance of Groundwater in Critical Zone Science

Abstract:The critical zone (CZ)-from treetops to groundwater-is an increasingly studied part of the earth system, where scientists study interactions between water, air, rock, soil, and life. Groundwater is both a boundary and an essential store in this integrated system, but is often not well considered in part because of the difficulty in accessing it and its slow movement relative to other parts of the system. Here, we describe some fundamental areas where groundwater hydrology is of fundamental importance to CZ science, including sustaining streamflow and vegetation, reacting with minerals to produce dissolved solutes and regolith, and influencing energy fluxes across the land-atmosphere interface. As the timing and type of precipitation change with climate, groundwater may play an even more important role in CZ processes as a sustainable water source for plants and streamflow. Many open questions also exist about the role of CZ processes on groundwater. Many data streams are needed and important to quantifying the integrated response of the CZ to groundwater and vice versa, but long-term data records are often incomplete or discontinued due to limited funding. We argue that the long timescales of processes that involve groundwater necessitate data collection efforts beyond typical federal funding timespans. Sustaining monitoring networks and developing new ones aimed at testing hypotheses related to slow-moving, groundwater-controlled CZ processes should be a scientific priority, and here we outline some open questions that we hope will motivate groundwater scientists to get involved in CZ science.

Facile Metal Release from Pore-Lining Phases Enables Unique Carbonate Zonation in a Basalt Carbon Mineralization Demonstration

Abstract:Carbon-negative strategies such as geologic carbon sequestration in continental flood basalts offers a promising route to the removal of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, via safe and permanent storage as stable carbonates. This potential has been successfully demonstrated at a field scale at the Wallula Basalt Carbon Storage Pilot Project where supercritical CO2 was injected into the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG). Here, we analyze recovered post-injection sidewall core cross-sections containing carbonate nodules using μ-XRF chemical mapping techniques that revealed compositional zonation within the nodules. The unique nature of the subsurface anthropogenic carbonates is highlighted by the near absence of Mg in an ankerite-like composition. Furthermore, a comparison between pre- and post-injection sidewall cores along with an in-depth chemical mapping of basalt pore lining cements provides a better understanding into the source and fate of critical cationic species involved in the precipitation of carbon mineralization products. Collectively, these results provide crucial insights into carbonate growth mechanisms under a time-dependent pore fluid composition. As such, these findings will enable parameterization of predictive models for future CO2 sequestration efforts in reactive reservoirs around the world.

Abstract:The International Symposium of Molecular Environmental Soil Science at the Interfaces in the Earth’s Critical Zone (ISMESS 2009) was successfully held during 10–14 October 2009 at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Two hundred sixty-six participants from 21 countries attended the symposium. The scientific program featured 2 plenary lecturers, 19 invited lecturers, 29 oral presentations, and 65 poster presentations. The five main sessions were included in the symposium: (1) The role of mineral colloids in carbon turnover and sequestration and the impact on climate change; (2) Biogeochemical interfacial reactions and the transformation, transport, and fate of vital and toxic elements; (3) Anthropogenic organics, crop protection, and ecotoxicology; (4) Environmental nanoparticles: distribution, formation, transformation, structural, and surface chemistry and biogeochemical and ecological impacts; and (5) Environmental processes and ecosystem health (Xu and Huang 2009). Following the peer reviewing process, a selection of articles arising from the symposium is published in this issue of Journal of Soils and Sediments. This symposium provided a forum for the interactions and communication of soil chemists, mineralogists, microbiologists, and physicists with allied scientists including pure chemists, biologists, environmental scientists, ecologists, and ecotoxicologists to address the current state-ofthe-art on “Molecular Environmental Soil Science”. No doubt this symposium contributed to identification of gaps in knowledge and to future research directions and research on soil processes at the interfaces at the molecular level in the Earth’s critical zone. It is significant to advance the frontiers of knowledge on biophysicochemical processes in soil and related environmental systems and their biogeochemical and ecological impacts and to promote education in this extremely important and challenging area of science for years to come. The symposium was highly evaluated by all the participants, and major knowledge shared include the following: (1) The concept of the Earth’s critical zone was highlighted, which is a system of coupled chemical, biological, physical, and geological processes operating together to support life at the Earth’s surface. (2) Further efforts are required by scientists to cross-disciplines for the study of the interactive processes in the critical zone and their impact on the globe and humankind, ranging in scale from the environmental mineral–organism–humus–water–air interfaces. (3) Discussion on carbon turnover improved the understanding of the role of mineral colloids in carbon transformation, dynamics, and sequestration and their impact on climate change in the environment. (4) Microbes are involved in important natural biogeochemical processes relating to metal–mineral transformations, element cycling, bioweathering, biocorrosion, bioremediation, revegetation, phytoremediation, and containment of pollution in the Earth’s critical zone. Abstract:The Loess Critical Zone (LCZ) is located in the intersection of bedrock, groundwater, pedosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. It is a key issue to understand the structural characteristics and soil carbon (C) cycle of the LCZ. We summarized the mechanisms of C exchange between rocks and the atmosphere, and discussed the mechanisms of C stabilization and persistence of the LCZ. Due to the deep layer, C stocks of the CLZ could be underestimated. In light of the recent theory of microbial C pump, soil microorganisms play an important role in C cycle, however, the microbial function is not widely considered in C cycling model of the LCZ. For future studies, it is suggested to systematically study the C cycling process from plant canopy to bedrock by the framework system of the LCZ. A variety of techniques and methods are integrated to combine short-term and high-frequency observations with long-term positioning observations, and pay attention to the response and feedback mechanisms of soil organic C (SOC) cycling to global changes and human activities, especially the migration and transformation of SOC in each circle and interface of the LCZ. We also recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term C monitoring in LCZ over broad geographic scale, to improve microbial C model for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics. Altogether, this is the first review of C cycling, spanning from the land surface down to the bedrock in the LCZ, which is significant implications for biogeochemical cycling of C in surface and deep layers down to the bedrock.

Abstract:Students new to geomorphology need to observe and interpret complex landscapes and features being acted upon in space and over widely-varying time periods. These observational complexities are generally communicated via textbooks as much as fieldwork. This article presents an explanatory schema by linking materials (M), process-mechanisms (P) to the visual aspects and geometry (G) of the landscape. This MPG schema can be viewed within the ‘Critical Zone’ where the processes, linkages and feedbacks at the Earth’s surface are studied. The linkages extend beyond geomorphology to wider aspects of physical geography: geology, soils, biogeography, climate and environment.

Tetrahedrally coordinated carbonates in Earth's lower mantle

Abstract:Carbonates are the main species that bring carbon deep into our planet through subduction. They are an important rock-forming mineral group, fundamentally distinct from silicates in Earth's crust in that carbon binds to three oxygen atoms, while silicon is bonded to four oxygens. Here, we present experimental evidence that under the sufficiently high pressures and high temperatures existing in the lower mantle, ferromagnesian carbonates transform to a phase with tetrahedrally coordinated carbons. Above 80 GPa, in situ synchrotron infrared experiments show the unequivocal spectroscopic signature of the high-pressure phase of (Mg,Fe)CO$_3$. Using ab-initio calculations, we assign the new IR signature to C-O bands associated with tetrahedrally coordinated carbon with asymmetric C-O bonds. Tetrahedrally coordinated carbonates are expected to exhibit substantially different reactivity than low pressure three-fold coordinated carbonates, as well as different chemical properties in the liquid state. Hence this may have significant implications on carbon reservoirs and fluxes and the global geodynamic carbon cycle.

Abstract:European Union policy on soil threats and soil protection has prioritized new research to address global soil threats. This research draws on the methodology of Critical Zone Observatories (CZOs) to focus a critical mass of international, multidisciplinary expertise at specific field sites. These CZOs were selected as part of an experimental design to study soil processes and ecosystem function along a hypothesized soil life cycle—from incipient soil formation where new parent material is being deposited, to highly degraded soils that have experienced millennia of intensive land use. Further CZOs have been selected to broaden the range of soil environments and data sets to test soil process models that represent the stages of the soil life cycle. The scientific methodology for this research focuses on the central role of soil structure and soil aggregate formation and stability in soil processes. Research methods include detailed analysis and mathematical modeling of soil properties related to aggregate formation and their relation to key processes of reactive transport, nutrient transformation, and C and food web dynamics in soil ecosystems. Within this program of research, quantification of soil processes across an international network of CZOs is focused on understanding soil ecosystem services including their quantitative monetary valuation within the soil life cycle. Further experimental design at the global scale is enabled by this type of international CZO network. One example is a proposed experiment to study soil ecosystem services along planetary‐scale environmental gradients. This would allow scientists to gain insight into the responses of soil processes to increasing human pressures on Earth's critical zone that arise through rapidly changing land use and climate.

Developing hydrogeophysics for critical zone studies, importance of heterogeneities and processes at the mesoscopic scale

Abstract:The critical zone is the thin outer layer supporting life on earth. It is a compartment in which many complex and coupled bio-chemico-physical processes take place. Characterizing and monitoring these processes is of utmost importance to understand and protect the critical zone. Geophysical methods are very appropriate tools to study them in situ and non-intrusively thanks to the sensitivity of measurable physical parameters to properties of interest. However, the critical zone is also a very heterogeneous medium at different scales and the quantitative use of geophysics rely on our capability to take them into account effectively. In this manuscript I present the various works that I conducted during the last ten years to better use hydrogeophysical methods by taking heterogeneities into account: from theoretical petrophysical model developments to laboratory experiments and in situ monitoring in critical zone observatories. After presenting the geophysical methods I have been using, I define the concept of mesoscopic scale heterogeneities, that is: larger than the pore scale but smaller than the resolution of the considered geophysical method. The first heterogeneities that I present are related to the pore size distribution and its impact on the water saturation, flow and solute transport properties. The second heterogeneities that I study are the presence of fractures and fracture networks in porous media. The final kind of heterogeneities that I am considering are induced by local biogeochemical reactions and their impact on geophysical signals. These new advances and on-going research projects pave the way to a more quantitative and more integrated use of geophysics to study the critical zone in its true complexity.

Climatic and landscape controls on water transit times and silicate mineral weathering in the critical zone

Abstract:The critical zone (CZ) can be conceptualized as an open system reactor that is continually transforming energy and water fluxes into an internal structural organization and dissipative products. In this study, we test a controlling factor on water transit times (WTT) and mineral weathering called Effective Energy and Mass Transfer (EEMT). We hypothesize that EEMT, quantified based on local climatic variables, can effectively predict WTT within—and mineral weathering products from—the CZ. This study tests whether EEMT or static landscape characteristics are good predictors of WTT, aqueous phase solutes, and silicate weathering products. Our study site is located around Redondo Peak, a rhyolitic volcanic resurgent dome, in northern New Mexico. At Redondo Peak, springs drain slopes along an energy gradient created by differences in terrain aspect. This investigation uses major solute concentrations, the calculated mineral mass undergoing dissolution, and the age tracer tritium and relates them quantitatively to EEMT and landscape characteristics. We found significant correlations between EEMT, WTT, and mineral weathering products. Significant correlations were observed between dissolved weathering products (Na+ and DIC), 3H concentrations, and maximum EEMT. In contrast, landscape characteristics such as contributing area of spring, slope gradient, elevation, and flow path length were not as effective predictive variables of WTT, solute concentrations, and mineral weathering products. These results highlight the interrelationship between landscape, hydrological, and biogeochemical processes and suggest that basic climatic data embodied in EEMT can be used to scale hydrological and hydrochemical responses in other sites. Integrated understanding of the Critical Zone processes in a subtropical karst watershed (Qingmuguan, Southwestern China): Hydrochemical and isotopic constraints

Abstract:<p>Improving the management and protection of karst groundwater resources and addressing karst-related environmental and ecological problems still face challenges raised from the limited knowledge on the entire karstic Critical Zone (K-CZ), including soil, epikarst, the vadose and saturated zones. Particularly, there is still a lack of integrated understanding of K-CZ properties and major CZ processes across space and time. In this study, we measured and analyzed the hydrochemical and multiple stable isotopic compositions of soil water, surface- and groundwaters from various compartments of the K-CZ in a typical subtropical karst watershed - Qingmuguan (QKW), Southwestern China, in order to explore the source and spatiotemporal variations of water and solutes (C, N, S) within the K-CZ; thereby elucidating the hydrological and biogeochemical processes and their affecting factors. The results show that (i) the K-CZ of QKW is characterized by high heterogeneity and permeability, with fast and strong hydrologic variations in response to rainfall variability; (ii) water-CO<sub>2</sub>‑carbonate interactions (i.e. carbonate weathering) are remarkably active in different zones and are significantly modulated by hydrologic dynamics and seasonal change in biological activities; (iii) efficient migration of nitrate and sulfate occurs across the surface toward the saturated aquifer zone, which is affected by the source availability, elemental transformation and flow transport processes; (iv) human activities have clearly influenced groundwater quality and the natural K-CZ processes, for example, exogenic acids of anthropogenic origin (e.g. acid precipitation and nitrogenous fertilizers from crop lands) have been proven to be involved in the carbonate weathering, with a contribution of ~20%–30%. Our study highlights the strong coupling of hydrological and various biogeochemical processes and the interactive connection among various layers of K-CZ. Thus, systematical monitoring along the CZ profile and a process-based dynamic approach to elucidating climatic and anthropogenic forcing are necessary to better understand the K-CZ properties and functions.</p>

Achieving Sustainable Earth Futures in the Anthropocene by Including Local Communities in Critical Zone Science

Abstract:Abstract Critical Zone Science (CZS) explores the deep evolution of landscapes from the base of the groundwater or the saprolite‐rock interface to the top of vegetation, the zone that supports all terrestrial life. Here we propose a framework for CZS to evolve further as a discipline, building on 1st generation CZOs in natural systems and 2nd generation CZOs in human‐modified systems, to incorporate human behaviour for more holistic understanding in a 3rd generation of CZOs. This concept was tested in the China‐UK CZO programme (2016–2020) that established four CZOs across China on different lithologies. Beyond conventional CZO insights into soil resources, biogeochemical cycling and hydrology across scales, surveys of farmers and local government officials led to insights into human‐environment interactions and key pressures affecting the socio‐economic livelihoods of local farmers. These learnings combined with the CZS data identified knowledge exchange (KE) opportunities to unravel diverse factors within the Land‐Water‐Food Nexus, that could directly improve local livelihoods and environmental conditions, such as reduction in fertilizer use, contributing toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environmental policies. Through two‐way local KE, the local cultural context and socio‐economic considerations were more readily apparent alongside the environmental rationale for policy and local action to improve the sustainability of farming practices. Seeking solutions to understand and remediate CZ degradation caused by human‐decision making requires the co‐design of CZS that foregrounds human behavior and the opinions of those living in human modified CZOs. We show how a new transdisciplinary CZO approach for sustainable Earth futures can improve alignment of research with the practical needs of communities in stressed environments and their governments, supporting social‐ecological and planetary health research agendas and improving capacity to achieve SDGs.
Disentangling sources and transformation mechanisms of nitrogen, sulfate, and carbon in water of a Karst Critical Zone

Abstract:In the Karst Critical Zone (KCZ), mining and urbanization activities produce multiple pollutants, posing a threat to the vital groundwater and surface water resources essential for drinking and irrigation. Despite their importance, the interactions between these pollutants in the intricate hydrology and land use of the KCZ remain poorly understood. In this study, we unraveled the transformation mechanisms and sources of nitrogen, sulfate, and carbon using multiple isotopes and the MixSIAR model, following hydrology and surface analyses conducted in spatial modelling with ArcGIS. Our results revealed frequent exchange between groundwater and surface water, as evidenced by the analysis of δD-H 2 O and δ 18 O-H 2 O. Nitrification predominantly occurred in surface water, although denitrification also made a minor contribution. Inorganic nitrogen in both groundwater and surface water primarily originated from soil nitrogen (48 % and 49 %, respectively). Sewage and manure were secondary sources of inorganic nitrogen in surface water, accounting for 41 % in urban and 38 % in mining areas. Notably, inorganic sulfur oxidation displayed significant spatial disparities between urban and mining areas, rendering groundwater more susceptible to sulfur pollution compared to surface water. The frequent interchange between groundwater and surface water posed a higher pollution risk to groundwater. Furthermore, the primary sources of CO 2 and HCO 3 − in both groundwater and surface water were water‐carbonate reactions and soil respiration. Sulfide oxidation was found to enhance carbonate dissolution, leading to increased CO 2 release from carbonate dissolution in the KCZ. These findings enhance our understanding of the transformation mechanisms and interactions of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon in groundwater and surface water. This knowledge is invaluable for accurately controlling and treating water pollution in the KCZ.
