Abstract:Since hydrogen currently has the potentials to satisfy the energy supplying necessities as a clean source of non-fossil fuel, hydrogen production from water splitting using synthesized semiconductor nanoparticles through a photocatalytic process reaction that is induced by employing solar energy is carried out through this research project. In order for a photocatalyst to function in water splitting and result to produce hydrogen, it ought to possess a suitable band gap. Hence, the semiconductor is utilized and doped to enhance its activity and establish higher hydrogen production efficiency. This is executed by preparing the semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by the sol–gel method as the photocatalytic reagent and doping it with different concentrations by weight of cadmium sulphide (CdS) quantum dots in addition to silver vanadate (AgVO3) and silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) nanoparticles to enhance the hydrogen production process accomplished by the means of a sun simulator acting as the solar energy source with using methanol as hole scavenger where the hydrogen produced is evolved from the water and methanol solution mixture. The resulted volume readings of each photocatalyst were recorded and plotted versus the time to compare the water splitting rates for each photocatalyst; also, the amount of hydrogen produced from each photocatalyst was calculated. Moreover, the structures of the prepared nanoparticle samples were characterized through XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and mapping tests. Eventually, the results showed that the best production rate photocatalyst was the ZnO that was doped with CdS 10% concentration by weight which also produced the highest amount of hydrogen that was of a value about 1.6656 mmol min−1.
