Abstract:More and more of our daily activities depend on smartphones and applications. Thus, an increasing number of studies are interested in whether interactive applications can be used to improve the happiness of individuals. This paper presents an application called Collect Your Happiness that is based on some positive psychology principles. It can not only enhance people’s happiness by collecting their daily happy moments but provide small tasks to improve their happiness levels. A cross-cultural measurement between the Chinese and Dutch was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of this intervention by SHS, SWLS, PGWBI, and MAAS. Results show that CYH can help people from both countries improve their happiness.

Abstract:Healthcare organisations implement a range of staff well-being initiatives and increasingly focus on compassionate leadership. While formal interventions aimed at maintaining and enhancing staff well-being can be beneficial, they have practical limitations, such as staff turnover and challenges in meeting demand. Therefore, everyday conversations between nurses in leadership positions and their team members also have an important role in supporting staff well-being. One psychological model that nurse leaders may wish to use is acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which involves techniques such as mindfulness, acceptance and values clarification. This article outlines the principles of ACT and explains how leaders can use these to guide well-being conversations with staff.

Abstract:This research explores the impact of workplace teaching kitchen cooking classes on participants' food literacy and identifies key predictors of employee engagement. Aligning with the existing literature, we demonstrate that a workplace teaching kitchen program, with hands-on cooking classes, effectively enhances food skills and intrinsic motivation—core aspects of food literacy. Importantly, our results reveal that even a single class can have a measurable impact. Teaching kitchens can successfully engage employees, particularly those with low food skills, showcasing their broad appeal beyond individuals already engaged in wellness or seeking social connection. Awareness emerges as the most influential predictor of participation, emphasizing the crucial role of marketing. Virtual classes prove as effective as onsite ones, offering the potential to increase access for employees. Recognizing employee wellness as a strategic opportunity for employers and a sought-after benefit for top talent, we underscore the importance of practical nutrition education to support individuals in shifting food choices within lifestyle constraints. Workplace teaching kitchens emerge as an effective and scalable solution to address this need. Future research should prioritize exploring the lasting impacts of teaching kitchen education on employee eating habits and health, contributing to ongoing strategy refinement.

The Leaning Tower of Pasta: Lessons in Team Performance and Creativity From a Core Surgical Training Boot Camp Design Challenge

Abstract:Aims: Unity of effort is an important component of strategic leadership and management theory associated with Core Surgical Training (CST) outcome. The aim was to determine the impact of team diversity on task completion: a creative design challenge, during CST Boot camp. Methods: Attendees (n = 44) at a single Statutory Education Body's CST Boot camp were stratified into teams related to specialty theme, and set a design challenge as described by Peter Skillman, to build the tallest free-standing tower out of spaghetti (20 pieces), tape (1 m), and string (1 m), with a marshmallow on top in 18 minutes. Primary outcome measure was tower height. Results: Five teams (50%) completed the task with the tallest tower measuring 70 cm (median 51, range 0-70). Median satisfaction with the simulation exercise was 4 (2-5) on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 corresponding with highest satisfaction. Successful task completion was associated with team surgical specialty (p = 0.032), ethnicity ratio (p = 0.010,), and gender ratio (p = 0.003), respectively. On multivariable analysis, only team gender ratio was independently associated with tower height (Hazard ratio 0.515, 95% confidence interval 0.350-0.759, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Modern leadership theory emphasizes the important dynamic relationship between individual team members, the team, and task completion. General surgery themed teams with a gender mix were most successful in completing the design challenge; whether relative simulation performance predicts strategic organizational skill and career progression will be the next question.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction As most adults spend over half of their waking time at work, workplace is the ideal place to promote healthy lifestyle, thus achieving total wellbeing. Besides occupational disease prevention, Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC) endeavors to promote physical and mental well-being through collaboration with employers in recent years. Methods OSHC partnered with health and labour authorities to launch the “Joyful@Healthy Workplace” Campaign and the Mental Health Charter in 2016 and 2020 respectively. Results Both campaigns emphasize mental well-being with the former having added focus on “Healthy Eating” and “Physical Activity. Facilitation, free promotional materials, expert advice and free on-site workshops were provided to enterprises who signed the Charters, undertaking to promote well-being at work. To date, some 3,000 enterprises (covering around 720,000 employees) have joined both or one of the Campaigns To encourage enterprises to invest in well-being programmes for employees, and to facilitate continuous improvement, OSHC run prestigious annual Best Practices Award for companies. Sharing Session cum Award Presentation Ceremony hosted by senior Government Officials were organized such that companies could exchange and compare notes and learn from the Winning companies. Discussion and conclusion Observable improvements were noticed in recent years where companies are quick to adopt others’ best practices and innovate on new measures to promote well-being. Reduction in sick leave and presenteeism, and improvement in staff retention and work satisfaction were reported by many companies who have been actively promoting well-being. A healthy and joyful workplace could achieve a win-win situation for all.

Abstract:Just as there is a tension between business professors’ practice of assigning team projects, especially in capstone courses, and students’ inclination to avoid them, there is also a tension between students’ desire to choose their own teammates and professors’ belief that they can do a better job of team creation. Professors have learned that when students choose teams, they can have problems of homogeneity, unbalanced skills, and unchosen students; however, when professors try to form teams for fairness and balance, students often resent it. This article presents a fun, engaging experiential exercise for effective team formation that combines the benefits of both student-directed and professor-directed methods. The exercise, conducted over one or two class meetings, allows students to learn about well-balanced team construction, present themselves to their classmates, interview each other, and choose who they would like to work with without the restrictions of seat proximity or prior connection. Results show students perceived that their teams were more available for meetings and exhibited more cohesiveness and higher performance than previous project teams, and strongly preferred this method. Instructions, worksheets, diagrams, and empirical support are shared in this article to allow professors to smoothly implement this exercise in their own classrooms.

Abstract:Abstract: This project introduces an innovative cupcake baking system that merges simple technology with traditional methods to streamline and enhance production. The system features precise conveyor control, automated baking, and intelligent monitoring, catering to both amateur and professional bakers. The project begins with an extensive analysis of current cupcake baking practices, identifying cost, efficiency, and usability challenges. The design phase integrates key components such as a programmable chain conveyor with heating coils, a batter dispensing mechanism, and a user-friendly monitoring and control interface. Custom-designed components were assembled during the fabrication process, using materials that meet safety and functionality standards. Micro-controllers ensure precise movement of cupcakes into and out of the baking station, achieving uniformly baked results. The batter dispensing mechanism is optimized for control and minimal waste, while safety features prevent overheating and over-dispensing, ensuring a secure baking environment. Performance evaluation through tests and trials showed significant improvements in cupcake uniformity, time efficiency, and user convenience compared to traditional methods. In conclusion, this project successfully demonstrates an advanced cupcake baking system that addresses key challenges in the baking process. By integrating technology, the system enhances cupcake quality and consistency, offering a cost-effective solution for bakers of all skill levels and paving the way for future advancements in baking technology

Abstract:Team building has today become a key business strategy been utilized by organizations to develop employees competencies, workplace experience, and a cohesive productive workforce that has the capacity to help organizations provide solutions to their numerous challenges. This paper examines the concept of teambuilding, and explored literature to discover whether teambuilding contributes to organizations positive outcomes that promotes productivity, enhanced performance, and competitive advantage. The paper observed that organizations are embracing teambuilding to achieve high levels of both task performance and human resources maintenance, as well as to stimulate and promote better organizational productivity and innovativeness. The paper identifies encouragement of creativity and innovation, open communication, and increased collaborations as some benefits of teambuilding. It also identified lack of trust, lack of self-awareness, poor communication and working toward opposing goals as some major challenges confronting teambuilding activities. The paper concluded that teambuilding promotes increased collaborations, improve employees morale, encourage creativity and innovation in organizations, and also as an effective way of developing employee competencies to meet customers growing needs and changing expectations. It is recommended that organizations should provide teambuilding activities that fit them, and that help to bring team members together. Organizations should also provide right climate and essential resources needed by teams to carry out assigned tasks if the teams are to succeed. An Evaluation of MINDFIT-A Student Therapeutic Running Group as a Multi-Layered Intervention in the United Kingdom

Abstract:Background: Mental health is an ever-increasing concern for UK Universities and is underreported. Creative and dynamic approaches to tackle student wellbeing are important. In 2018, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) Student Wellbeing Service initiated a pilot study of a therapeutic running programme 'MINDFIT' that combined physical activity, led by a counsellor, alongside a psychoeducation approach to support student mental health. Methods: Mixed methods were used which included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), evaluating low mood and depression, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7), evaluating levels of anxiety. Results: A total of 28 students were triaged onto a weekly programme over three semesters. Overall, 86% of the participants completed the programme. A promising reduction in the scores for PHQ-9 and GAD-7 was found at the end of the programme. Focus groups, with student participants, were held to gather qualitative data for analysis. After thematic analysis, three main themes emerged: "Creating a safe community", "Making progress" and "Pathways to success". Conclusions: MINDFIT was an effective and engaging multi-layered therapeutic approach. Recommendations identified the importance and effectiveness of the triage process in recruiting students and sustainability of the programme through the continued engagement of students post programme. More research is required to identify the long-term effects of the MINDFIT approach and how applicable it is to higher education contexts.
Feasibility of student-designed, peer-led classroom physical activity breaks in graduate school

Abstract:Objective: We evaluated the feasibility of Pitt Moves, a classroom-based, peer-led physical activity break (PAB) intervention developed by graduate students to improve mood, focus, and boredom among students. Participants: One hundred and thirty-two graduate-level students in 10 courses during an academic semester. Methods: Process evaluation with a formative focus involving document review, surveys, and interviews with students and facilitators. Results: Eighty-four percent of eligible students participated in ≥1 of 65 PABs. Participants said Pitt Moves provided a mental break, promoted community building, and increased their physical activity. They recommended increasing accessibility. Organizers' time was a constraint in running this program. Conclusion: Pitt Moves was feasible based on successful recruitment of participants, delivery of PABs as planned, and participant acceptability. A formal study should evaluate whether Pitt Moves can improve mood, focus, and boredom among graduate students. Organizational encouragement and audiovisuals could enhance marketing and program implementation.
Exercise-, nature- and socially interactive-based initiatives improve mood and self-esteem in the clinical population

Abstract:Aims: This study evaluated two existing group-based health promotion initiatives (a social club and a swimming group) and compared these to a new green exercise programme (weekly countryside and urban park walks). Methods: Participants represented a clinical population (N = 53) and were all experiencing a range of mental health problems. They only attended one of the three programmes and sessions were held once a week for six weeks in all initiatives. Composite questionnaires incorporating two standardized measures to analyse changes in self-esteem and mood were completed before and after all sessions. Results: A significant main effect for self-esteem and mood pre and post activity (p < 0.001) was reported after participating in a single session. The change in self-esteem was significantly greater in the green exercise group compared with the social activities club (p < 0.001). Dose responses showed that both self-esteem and mood levels improved over the six-week period and improvements were related to attendance in the green exercise group. Conclusions: Green exercise as a health-promoting initiative for people experiencing mental ill health is equally as effective as existing programmes. Combining exercise, nature and social components in future initiatives may play a key role in managing and supporting recovery from mental ill health, suggesting a potential 'green' approach to mental healthcare and promotion.

Abstract:As more college students are facing mental health challenges, it is imperative to explore innovative ways of improving their mental health, including developing self-care interventions that help mitigate their stressors. Based on the Response Styles Theory and self-care conceptions, this study creates the “Joy Pie” project that consists of five self-care strategies, aiming to regulate negative emotions and increase self-care efficacy. Using an experimental design and two-wave data collected from a representative sample of Beijing college students (n1 = 316, n2 = 127), this study assesses the effects of the five proposed interventions on the students’ self-care efficacy and mental health management. The results show that self-care efficacy helped improve mental health through emotion regulation, which is mediated by age, gender, and family income. The promising results support the effectiveness of the “Joy Pie” interventions in strengthening self-care efficacy and improving mental health. This study offers insights into building back better mental health security among college students at this critical time when the world is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

How and when Employees Proactively Extend the Benefits of Past Positive Work Events to Coworkers

Abstract:Positive work events are ubiquitous and benefit employees in myriad ways. Notwithstanding, dominant theories of work events portray events as temporally bounded external happenings, and employees as immediate and reactive beneficiaries of events. Moreover, mainstream management theories suggest that positive work events are advantageous to direct beneficiaries, but not to others. In this paper, we challenge these existing theoretical tenets by integrating theory on self-conscious emotions and capitalization to posit that employees who engage in workplace interpersonal capitalization experience pride and subsequently share knowledge with their coworkers. Going further, we suggest that these effects are bounded by whether the disclosed positive work events are attributed to effort, and whether disclosers perceive responsiveness in their coworkers during capitalization. Stated differently, we maintain that employees can “rekindle the fire” of positive work events in terms of generating pride, which in turn motivates employees to “spread the flames” by sharing knowledge with coworkers. A source- and time-separated field study provides support for our hypotheses. Our work broadens current conceptualizations of positive work events by developing theory regarding how employees can proactively extend their past positive event benefits to themselves and ultimately to others.
Evaluation of the "15 Minute Challenge": A Workplace Health and Wellbeing Program

Abstract:The 15 Minute Challenge is an mHealth workplace wellness initiative, employing gamification to promote physical activity, aiming to enhance health outcomes and overall well-being. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the effectiveness of the program among employees at various Australian, New Zealand, and UK workplaces. Real-world data from 11,575 participants across 73 companies were analyzed. The program encouraged daily 15 min physical activity sessions over six weeks. Participants self-reported their physical activity and fitness, energy, overall health, sleep quality, and mood at baseline and 6 weeks. Program satisfaction, engagement rates, and adherence to the program were also assessed. Effectiveness was evaluated using multi-level mixed-effects linear regression analyses. The intervention showed significant increases in physical activity, with 95% of participants meeting or exceeding international physical activity guidelines, up from 57% at baseline (p < 0.05). Self-reported fitness, energy, overall health, sleep quality, and mood significantly improved (between 7.1 and 14.0% improvement; all p < 0.05). High satisfaction was reported, with 92% of participants recommending the program. The 15 Minute Challenge effectively increased physical activity levels and improved self-reported health outcomes among participating employees. The high satisfaction rates and significant health improvements highlight the potential of workplace wellness programs to combat sedentary behavior and promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.

The Use of Building Blocks to Teach Communication and Social Skills to First-year Pharmacy Students

Abstract:Objective. To conduct an innovative workshop activity using plastic building blocks to create a student-centric environment that encouraged development of creative thinking skills and self-reflection in undergraduate pharmacy students.Methods. Students were randomly allocated into small groups of four and assigned the role of either architect or team builder and tasked with creating a LEGO robot. Students were not allowed to speak during the activity. The architect was tasked with providing instructions to team builders on how to build the robot using nonverbal communication. After completion of the task, each group was asked to reflect on the exercise and share what they learned with the entire class. These discussions were video recorded and thematically analyzed.Results. The metaphorical models that students built served as a basis for discussion, problem-solving, and decision-making. Students described how this activity enabled them to mentally and visually link abstract concepts, such as decision-making and problem-solving, to actual practice. Three themes were identified from the qualitative study: thinking with hands, listening with eyes; linking theory to practice; and learning through reflection.Conclusion. This activity offered a non-confrontational way to support communication and the learning process. The use of an interactive game can be a useful teaching strategy to create an active-learning environment, helping pharmacy students improve their social and cognitive skills, such as decision-making, problem-solving, and communication.

Abstract:Engagement in the companies' training programs is a crucial issue for their success. Every company faces the matter in different manners: some enterprises promote mandatory courses or programs; however, they may result not enough effective, due to a low level of motivation that can compromise learning and retention. Other enterprises prefer to adopt voluntary courses or programs, but in this case enrollment and completion depend on many factors: the time that workers can spend on training without compromising their main tasks; the directives of managers; the individual motivation. Another way to face corporate training may exploit gamification to enhance engagement. The authors present the design and implementation of a gamified course of office automation, developed for the employees of a large media company. Our approach attempts to go beyond the well-known triad point-badges-leaderboards, employing also a narrative, the Bartle's taxonomy of player types and the Self-determination theory by Deci and Ryan.

Abstract:Introduction: After COVID-19 restrictions, hybrid solutions were established that combined smart working and work in presence. Workplace conditions significantly impact employees' lives, particularly in terms of meeting their needs and promoting their wellbeing. Based on a socio-ecological and multilevel methodology, the UP150 concept (Proactive Office 150) represents a possible innovative solution to meet employees' needs and valorize flexible work. It encourages physical exercise and active breaks during the typical workday by using particular architectural modifications, a dedicated App, and physical activity professionals as wellness coaches. The present study is the last step of the preliminary actions planned to check the benefits of the UP150 concept and aims to explore the workers' perceptions after experiencing this project. Methods: The qualitative analysis of a preliminary survey (concerning information about the company structure and workers' habits) performed before conducting a randomized controlled trial intervention study and the analysis of the semi-structured interviews after 8 weeks of a UP150 experience served as datasets for this study and have been examined and discussed. Results: In the preliminary survey, the young (under 40) and generally active (57% of the workers) reported being motivated to exercise but inhibited by a lack of time and a heavy workload. After 8 weeks at a modified workplace designed in accordance with the motive behind the UP150, the workers displayed noticeable positive perceptions and appreciation. Discussion: The qualitative analysis confirmed and supported the effectiveness of the UP150 concept that previous research had already found in quantitative parameters related to employees' motor efficiency, psychophysical status, and amount of physical activity. Participants reported beneficial perceived effects on their wellness and psychophysical status following a UP150 experience. Moreover, the concept improved social relationships and increased motivation. In conclusion, the UP150 concept efficiently fostered a positive perception of physical exercise and directed the employees toward the assumption of healthy behaviors fitting the physical literacy paradigm.
Healthy-Canteen Displays: A Tactic to Encourage Community Sport Canteens to Provide Healthier Food and Beverage Options

Abstract:(1) Background: Community sport settings present a range of conflicting health behaviours, including the tension between being physically active and consuming discretionary foods. Therefore, community sport settings are considered a promising location for health promotion. The aim of this project was to evaluate perceptions, knowledge and the impact (e.g., barriers and outcomes) of a healthy-canteen (cafeteria) display, based on traffic light labeling (TLL), which was set up at an Australian Basketball Association Managers’ Convention and Trade Show. (2) Methods: We set up a healthy ‘canteen display and surveyed Basketball managers on their perceptions of the display before (Survey 1) and after (Survey 2) visiting the display. Three months later they were surveyed (Survey 3) on changes made to their community sport canteens. (3) Results: Eighty-eight, 76 and 22 participants completed Surveys 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Participants believed stocking healthy foods and beverages was important (mean 8.5/10). Food waste, lack of consumer interest and price were identified barriers to stocking healthy foods. After visiting the display, 75% were inspired to make changes and 50% were surprised by the differences between their perceptions of the healthfulness of foods and the TLL ratings. Post-convention, 41% and 70% made or had planned healthy changes to their community sport canteen. (4) Conclusions: A healthy-canteen display is a low-cost, easy-to-implement strategy that may be able to direct self-driven improvement in the healthfulness of foods stocked at community canteens and lead to improved nutritional intakes at these venues.
