Abstract:The Flower-drum-lantern is a popular civilian musical art made up of dance and music in the Anhui province which is near the Hui river of China. It is representing the common culture which is performed in the court of Han tribe, because of the various contents, well-organized structure, and the old history. For the reason that over seventy percent of the Chinese population are farmers, knowing the farmers’ empathy will be a crucial part of understanding the Chinese culture, especially the court art. The historical research of the Flower-drum-lantern is inevitable to widening the view of the Chinese culture. In the ancient time, civilian musical art made up of dance and music was used in a religious traditional ceremony, or to elevate the effect of the hard labor. As the time passed, the Flower-drum-lantern showed development in business and entertainment areas. It is so often performed at Lantern Festival, Temple Festival, court, or in the theatre. Looking at the geographic features of Anhui province can tell that it was easy to be influenced by other cultures. It is uncertain when the Flower-drum-lantern appeared in the rural community, the records of historic events proves that a similar musical art to the Flower-drum-lantern was performed in the Song Dynasty. The mixed music art “Ta-ge” and “Yang-ge”, which was transmitted to China from the northern tribe, were performed in a festival. Other than this, there is the “Ta-yao-lang” which is a comedy mixed with dance and music, and “He-sheng”. a mixed music art, what was performed in a palace. All of these arts were enjoyed by civilians of rural society in the Sui or Tang dynasty. Confirming these facts, through the course of these progress, the Flower-drum-lantern was completed in Song Dynasty. At Qing Dynasty, the Flower-drum-lantern met the time that the comedy was added to it.
