Abstract:In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have greatly advanced and become a reality in many areas of our daily lives. In the health care field, numerous efforts are being made to implement the AI technology for practical medical treatments. With the rapid developments in machine learning algorithms and improvements in hardware performances, the AI technology is expected to play an important role in effectively analyzing and utilizing extensive amounts of health and medical data. However, the AI technology has various unique characteristics that are different from the existing health care technologies. Subsequently, there are a number of areas that need to be supplemented within the current health care system for the AI to be utilized more effectively and frequently in health care. In addition, the number of medical practitioners and public that accept AI in the health care is still low; moreover, there are various concerns regarding the safety and reliability of AI technology implementations. Therefore, this paper aims to introduce the current research and application status of AI technology in health care and discuss the issues that need to be resolved.

Abstract:As the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to permeate the fabric of healthcare, particularly in the realms of patient surveillance and telemedicine, a transformative era beckons. This manuscript endeavors to unravel the intricacies of recent AI advancements and their profound implications for reconceptualizing the delivery of medical care. Through the introduction of innovative instruments such as virtual assistant chatbots, wearable monitoring devices, predictive analytic models, personalized treatment regimens, and automated appointment systems, AI is not only amplifying the quality of care but also empowering patients and fostering a more interactive dynamic between the patient and the healthcare provider. Yet, this progressive infiltration of AI into the healthcare sphere grapples with a plethora of challenges hitherto unseen. The exigent issues of data security and privacy, the specter of algorithmic bias, the requisite adaptability of regulatory frameworks, and the matter of patient acceptance and trust in AI solutions demand immediate and thoughtful resolution .The importance of establishing stringent and far-reaching policies, ensuring technological impartiality, and cultivating patient confidence is paramount to ensure that AI-driven enhancements in healthcare service provision remain both ethically sound and efficient. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) aims to mimic human cognitive functions. It is bringing a paradigm shift to healthcare, powered by increasing availability of healthcare data and rapid progress of analytics techniques. We survey the current status of AI applications in healthcare and discuss its future. AI can be applied to various types of healthcare data (structured and unstructured). Popular AI techniques include machine learning methods for structured data, such as the classical support vector machine and neural network, and the modern deep learning, as well as natural language processing for unstructured data. Major disease areas that use AI tools include cancer, neurology and cardiology. We then review in more details the AI applications in stroke, in the three major areas of early detection and diagnosis, treatment, as well as outcome prediction and prognosis evaluation. We conclude with discussion about pioneer AI systems, such as IBM Watson, and hurdles for real-life deployment of AI.

Abstract:Innovation and rapid technological development in Smart Medicine or Smart Healthcare impact profoundly on many aspects of healthcare. It is believed that Health Information Technology (HIT) has the potential to improve integration between care providers, reduce administrative costs and burdens, reduce medical errors, and improve care quality and patient outcomes. However, issues such as interoperability, compatibility, and integration are critical to effectively integrating hardware and software in order to fully realize the benefits of HIT. High-end medical devices and equipment, including medical carts / mobile computer carts and wireless physiological and biomedical monitoring devices, should also be integrated into the hospital information system. Furthermore, the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom Hierarchy (DIKW) has been gaining popularity in the development of Nursing Information Systems (NIS) since 2013. To create a DIKW-based information system, data must first be defined and analyzed and then transformed into meaningful information. Eventually, this information is transformed into an intelligent system. For example, if evidence-based nursing research results / findings are integrated into the NIS to guide clinical practice, patient outcomes, patient safety, and healthcare quality will be greatly enhanced.

Abstract:This study examines the current state of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology applications and their impact on the healthcare industry. In addition to a thorough review of the literature, this study analyzed several real-world examples of AI applications in healthcare. The results indicate that major hospitals are, at present, using AI-enabled systems to augment medical staff in patient diagnosis and treatment activities for a wide range of diseases. In addition, AI systems are making an impact on improving the efficiency of nursing and managerial activities of hospitals. While AI is being embraced positively by healthcare providers, its applications provide both the utopian perspective (new opportunities) and the dystopian view (challenges to overcome). We discuss the details of those opportunities and challenges to provide a balanced view of the value of AI applications in healthcare. It is clear that rapid advances of AI and related technologies will help care providers create new value for their patients and improve the efficiency of their operational processes. Nevertheless, effective applications of AI will require effective planning and strategies to transform the entire care service and operations to reap the benefits of what technologies offer.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence represents a powerful computational tool to analyze large amounts of data with and without supervision. Such powerful techniques have significantly impacted the advancement of multiple sectors from social media to data security, the automotive industry, gaming, finances, and healthcare. Only recently, however, artificial intelligence has been making significant strides in healthcare and biomedical research. Despite such advancements and the expectation of potential breakthroughs arising from implementing artificial intelligence in these fields, there is limited knowledge transfer and training for most healthcare professionals on using these computational techniques. While there is a wide array of publications on artificial intelligence applied to scientific research, most are too technical (not aimed at the non-initiated), too broad (with an overwhelming amount of data), or too focused on a particular application. This chapter presents an overview of artificial intelligence and its derivatives, giving a historical perspective, a succinct technical explanation of the underlying basis, and some examples of its applications. It finishes with a brief discussion on the challenges for implementing AI to be fully accepted in the scientific community.

Abstract:The significant increase in the number of individuals with chronic ailments (including the elderly and disabled) has dictated an urgent need for an innovative model for healthcare systems. The evolved model will be more personalized and less reliant on traditional brick-and-mortar healthcare institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term healthcare centers. The smart healthcare system is a topic of recently growing interest and has become increasingly required due to major developments in modern technologies, especially in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This paper is aimed to discuss the current state-of-the-art smart healthcare systems highlighting major areas like wearable and smartphone devices for health monitoring, machine learning for disease diagnosis, and the assistive frameworks, including social robots developed for the ambient assisted living environment. Additionally, the paper demonstrates software integration architectures that are very significant to create smart healthcare systems, integrating seamlessly the benefit of data analytics and other tools of AI. The explained developed systems focus on several facets: the contribution of each developed framework, the detailed working procedure, the performance as outcomes, and the comparative merits and limitations. The current research challenges with potential future directions are addressed to highlight the drawbacks of existing systems and the possible methods to introduce novel frameworks, respectively. This review aims at providing comprehensive insights into the recent developments of smart healthcare systems to equip experts to contribute to the field.

Abstract:The developing fields of artificial intelligence (AI)/ machine learning (ML) offer a significant potential to improve healthcare services. Many areas of clinical practice, scientific research, and healthcare management have included AI/ML techniques. Screening and daily fitness monitoring, diagnostic services in gastroenterology, pathology, and radiology, as well as support for clinical decision-making and palliative care, are the main categories involved. However, there are significant obstacles to the widespread use of AI/ML in healthcare, including higher installation and maintenance costs, potentially harmful medical mistakes, a lack of ethical frameworks for AI, unemployment, and reduced capacity building within the human workforce. Many business initiatives have now been created in the field of healthcare AI/ML innovation. They offer everything from advanced diagnostics to vitals monitoring in their products and services. In short, AI/ML may be extremely important in addressing the difficulties with complexity and the explosion of data in the healthcare system. Abstract:Artificial intelligence has provided us with an exploration of a whole new research era. As more data and better computational power become available, the approach is being implemented in various fields. The demand for it in health informatics is also increasing, and we can expect to see the potential benefits of its applications in healthcare. It can help clinicians diagnose disease, identify drug effects for each patient, understand the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes, explore new phenotypes or treatment recommendations, and predict infectious disease outbreaks with high accuracy. In contrast to traditional models, recent artificial intelligence approaches do not require domain-specific data pre-processing, and it is expected that it will ultimately change life in the future. Despite its notable advantages, there are some key challenges on data (high dimensionality, heterogeneity, time dependency, sparsity, irregularity, lack of label, bias) and model (reliability, interpretability, feasibility, security, scalability) for practical use. This article presents a comprehensive review of research applying artificial intelligence in health informatics, focusing on the last seven years in the fields of medical imaging, electronic health records, genomics, sensing, and online communication health, as well as challenges and promising directions for future research. We highlight ongoing popular approaches' research and identify several challenges in building models.

Abstract:With the rapid development of medical and computer technologies, the healthcare system has seen a surge of interest from both the academia and industry. However, most healthcare systems fail to consider the emergency situations of patients, and are unable to provide a personalized resource service for special users. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose the Edge-Cognitive-Computing-based (ECC-based) smart-healthcare system. This system is able to monitor and analyze the physical health of users using cognitive computing. It also adjusts the computing resource allocation of the whole edge computing network comprehensively according to the health-risk grade of each user. The experiments show that the ECC-based healthcare system provides a better user experience and optimizes the computing resources reasonably, as well as significantly improving in the survival rates of patients in a sudden emergency.

Abstract:Healthcare systems are under increasing strain due to a myriad of factors, from a steadily ageing global population to the current COVID-19 pandemic. In a world where we have needed to be connected but apart, the need for enhanced remote and at-home healthcare has become clear. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers a promising solution. The IoT has created a highly connected world, with billions of devices collecting and communicating data from a range of applications, including healthcare. Due to these high volumes of data, a natural synergy with Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become apparent - big data both enables and requires AI to interpret, understand, and make decisions that provide optimal outcomes. In this extensive survey, we thoroughly explore this synergy through an examination of the field of the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) for healthcare. This work begins by briefly establishing a unified architecture of AIoT in a healthcare context, including sensors and devices, novel communication technologies, and cross-layer AI. We then examine recent research pertaining to each component of the AIoT architecture from several key perspectives, identifying promising technologies, challenges, and opportunities that are unique to healthcare. Several examples of real-world AIoT healthcare use cases are then presented to illustrate the potential of these technologies. Lastly, this work outlines promising directions for future research in AIoT for healthcare.

Abstract:"Technology - Born from Human Nature" is a familiar Taiwan advertising slogan. Healthcare is a profession that is intimately entwined with human nature. In order to keep up with today's fast-changing healthcare environment and the broadly diverse needs of different healthcare settings, how to best use technology to creatively and efficiently develop patient-friendly care services and interdisciplinary teaching and learning strategies is a topic that is now receiving significant and growing attention in this field. The increasing utilization of big data worldwide is allowing us to better understand public needs and to more-accurately predict changing trends. Related technologies apply knowledge from the field of AI learning, as this process requires deep understanding of how target populations think and reason. This technology has the capacity to significantly improve the accuracy of healthcare diagnoses and to better anticipate patient safety risks in terms of prescription medicine use, the reporting of critical test results, and other factors, thus generating savings in terms of time and costs (Cheong, 2018). Furthermore, healthcare education is increasingly emphasizing the use of simulated environments in order to improve scenario-based learning and teaching efficacy. Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications help educators overcome the limitations of traditional models of education (Hsieh & Lin, 2017). Educators are now able to incorporate simulations of situations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to experience otherwise, such as disaster scenes, in-flight medical emergencies, surgeries, emergency rescue scenarios, and gender-care scenarios, into integrated innovative-technology education strategies. Moreover, related technology applications are assisting healthcare professionals to improve their familiarity with clinical techniques, outreach and communication skills, and training. Moreover, whether applied in healthcare education and training, clinical caregiving, emergency medical units, or chronic care settings, these simulation-related, cross-disciplinary technology applications have much to contribute.

Abstract:Intellectual capital is a scarce resource in the healthcare industry. Making the most of this resource is the first step toward achieving a completely intelligent healthcare system. However, most existing centralized and deep learning-based systems are unable to adapt to the growing volume of global health records and face application issues. To balance the scarcity of healthcare resources, the emerging trend of IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) and edge computing will be very practical and cost-effective. A full examination of the transformational role of intelligent edge computing in the IoMT era to attain health care equity is offered in this research. Intelligent edge computing-aided distribution and collaborative information management is a possible approach for a long-term digital healthcare system. Furthermore, IEC (Intelligent Edge Computing) encourages digital health data to be processed only at the edge, minimizing the amount of information exchanged with central servers/the internet. This significantly increases the privacy of digital health data. Another critical component of a sustainable healthcare system is affordability in digital healthcare. Affordability in digital healthcare is another key component of a sustainable healthcare system. Despite its importance, it has received little attention due to its complexity. In isolated and rural areas where expensive equipment is unavailable, IEC with AR / VR, also known as edge device shadow, can play a significant role in the inexpensive data collection process. Healthcare equity becomes a reality by combining intelligent edge device shadows and edge computing.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has entered the mainstream as computing power has improved. The healthcare industry is undergoing dramatic transformations at present. One of the most recent industries to heavily use AI is telehealth, which is used for anything from issuing electronic healthcare cards to providing individual counselling. Artificial intelligence (AI) is influencing telehealth in the United States in a major way. Using AI in telehealth to allow clinicians to make real-time, data-driven rich choices is critical to offering a better patient experience and improved health outcomes as practitioners strive toward expanding virtual care options along the care continuum. Research in the medical industry has started to use AI’s strengths in data processing and analysis in telehealth, reflecting the widespread adoption of AI in other sectors. Because of the difficulties inherent in telemedicine’s deployment, there is an urgent need to broaden its capabilities and enhance its processes so that they may be tailored to address particular issues. This article is aimed to study different areas of telemedicine and analyze the effect of AI in the field of health and medicine. The literature surveyed in this study demonstrates the infinite growth potential afforded by the combination of AI and telemedicine. There are four main directions that the expanding use of this technology is heading: patient monitoring, healthcare IT, intelligent aid in diagnosis, and information analysis with other specialists.

To meet the increasing demands on this critical infrastructure, there is a need for intelligent methods to cope with the existing related challenges. In this regard, edge computing technology can reduce latency and energy consumption by moving processes closer to the data sources in comparison to the traditional centralized cloud and IoT-based healthcare systems. In addition, by bringing automated insights into the smart healthcare systems, artificial intelligence (AI) provides the possibility of detecting and predicting high-risk diseases in advance, decreasing medical costs for patients, and offering efficient treatments. The objective of this article is to highlight the benefits of the adoption of the edge intelligent technology, along with the use of AI in smart healthcare systems. Moreover, a novel smart healthcare model is proposed to boost the utilization of AI and edge technology in smart healthcare systems. Additionally, we discuss potential challenges and future research directions arising when integrating these different technologies.
