Abstract:Mitochondrial role in inflammationThe NLRP3 inflammasome is a molecular complex that triggers innate immune defences through the maturation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β, in response to danger signals such as infection and metabolic dysregulation. Tschopp and colleagues now report an unexpected central role for mitochondria in the process. The NLRP3 inflammasomes are activated by the reactive oxygen species released by damaged mitochondria. This work suggests that mitochondria are not only essential for apoptosis but also for an inflammatory response.
