Abstract:TiO2 microcrystals exposing {001} facets are of potential applications in photocatalysis; however, the photocatalytic activity is limited by micrometer sizes. Herein, we report a compositing tactic to compensate the photocatalytic activity through surface decorations with few-layer TiO2 nanobelts. Hydrothermally synthesized anatase TiO2 microcrystals exposing (001) facets were immersed in a precursor solution at 60 degrees C, on which hydrogen titanate nanobelts precipitated vertically on the surface. A subsequent calcination in air at 400 degrees C was followed to decompose titanate nanobelts to anatase TiO2 with the nanostructure maintained. The coverage of TiO2 nanobelts can be controlled by varying the immersing duration. When utilized to assist photodegradation of phenol in water under UV light illumination, the composited TiO2 exhibited a reaction rate constant 2.3 times that of the pristine TiO2 microcrystals. A synergetic effect arising from the microcrystals and surface decorated nanobelts is believed to contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Searching of efficient semiconductor photocatalysts utilizing visible-light solar energy for hydrogen generation from water splitting remains a great challenge. Many efforts have been focused on enhancing visible light absorption by narrowing the bandgap of TiO2, but their visible-light power conversion still remains insufficient. Here we report a new low-temperature approach to synthesize black titania with a unique amorphous core/crystalline shell structure (TiO2@TiO2-x). This black titania improves visible and infrared light absorption and ultra-visible light photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the incorporation of nonmetal elements (X = H, N, S, I) into the shells significantly boosts visible-light photocatalytisis on both water splitting and waste-water cleaning. It is worth noting that the amorphous shell and the X termination as a strategy are necessary for titania to narrow bandgap and receive more efficient visible-light photocatalysis than any other reported titania.

Abstract:Black TiO2 attracts enormous attention due to its large solar absorption and induced excellent photocatalytic activity. Herein, a new approach assisted by hydrogen plasma to synthesize unique H-doped black titania with a core/shell structure (TiO2@TiO2-xHx) is presented, superior to the high H-2-pressure process (under 20 bar for five days). The black titania possesses the largest solar absorption (approximate to 83%), far more than any other reported black titania (the record (high-pressure): approximate to 30%). H doping is favorable to eliminate the recombination centers of light-induced electrons and holes. High absorption and low recombination ensure the excellent photocatalytic activity for the black titania in the photo-oxidation of organic molecules in water and the production of hydrogen. The H-doped amorphous shell is proposed to play the same role as Ag or Pt loading on TiO2 nanocrystals, which induces the localized surface plasma resonance and black coloration. Photocatalytic water splitting and cleaning using TiO2-xHx is believed to have a bright future for sustainable energy sources and cleaning environment.

Abstract:Titania with nanostructures has attracted considerable attention due to its potential use in catalysts, gas sensors, photovoltaic cells, photonic crystals, etc. This paper reports the synthesis of titania nanoflowers by simply oxidizing pure titanium with hydrogen peroxide solutions containing hexamethylenetetramine and nitric acid at a low temperature of 353 K. Titania nanoflowers with the crystal structure of anatase or a mixture of anatase and rutile were obtained after a subsequent thermal treatment to crystallize the as-precipitated amorphous structure. Photocatalytic tests revealed an excellent photocatalytic property of the titania nanoflowers.

Abstract:Cu/N-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sol–gel technique. Their structure, surface chemical composition, and optical absorption were characterized. All as-prepared samples consisted of the anatase phase. It was found that Cu atoms replaced Ti atom sites, and N atoms occupied the O atom sites and interstitial sites in the TiO2 lattice. The optical absorption results reveal that Cu/N codoping could greatly enhance the absorption of TiO2 in the entire visible region, leading to a decrease in the band-gap energy of TiO2. It also significantly enhanced the solar-driven catalytic activity of TiO2 in the degradation of methylene blue in solution. The sample 2.0 at% Cu/N-codoped TiO2 displayed the highest solar-driven catalytic efficiency among all tested samples.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of semiconductors is largely governed by their light absorption, separation of photoinduced charge carriers and surface catalytically active sites, which are primarily controlled by the morphology, crystalline size, structure, and especially the electronic structure of photocatalysts. Black TiO2 is recognized as one of the most promising visible-light photocatalysts, due to its significantly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance in comparison to intrinsic TiO2. In this work, black TiO2 is synthesized through the hydrogenation process. The sample shows a TiO2@TiO2-x core/shell structure which is attributed to hydrogenation. By using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we identified the featured midgap electronic states in black TiO2, which gave rise to the TiO2-x shell layer. These states lead to the improvement of visible-light absorption and the separation of photoinduced charge carriers, which consequently result in remarkable enhanced photocatalytic activities in black TiO2.

Abstract:To utilize visible-light solar energy to meet environmental and energy crises, black TiO2 as a photocatalyst is an excellent solution to clean polluted air and water and to produce H-2. Herein, black TiO2 with a crystalline core-amorphous shell structure reduced easily by CaH2 at 400 degrees C is demonstrated to harvest over 80% solar absorption, whereas white TiO2 harvests only 7%, and possesses superior photocatalytic performances in the degradation of organics and H-2 production. Its water decontamination is 2.4 times faster and its H-2 production was 1.7 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. Photoelectrochemical measurements reveal that the reduced samples exhibit greatly improved carrier densities, charge separation, and photocurrent (a 4.5-fold increase) compared with the original TiO2. Consequently, this facile and versatile method could provide a promising and cost-effective approach to improve the visible-light absorption and performance of TiO2 in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely investigated for photocatalytic H2 evolution and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting since 1972. However, its wide bandgap (3.0–3.2 eV) limits the optical absorption of TiO2 for sufficient utilization of solar energy. Blackening TiO2 has been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance its solar absorption and thus the photocatalytic and PEC activities, and aroused widespread research interest. In this article, we reviewed the recent progress of black TiO2 for photocatalytic H2 evolution and PEC water splitting, along with detailed introduction to its unique structural features, optical property, charge carrier transfer property and related theoretical calculations. As summarized in this review article, black TiO2 could be a promising candidate for photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen generation via water splitting, and continuous efforts are deserved for improving its solar hydrogen efficiency.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 has aroused a broad range of research effort since 1972. Although TiO2 has a very high efficiency in utilizing ultraviolet light, its overall solar activity is very limited due to its wide bandgap (≈3.0−3.2 eV). This is a bottleneck for TiO2 to be applied in the areas ranging from visible‐light photocatalysis and photovoltaics to photo‐electrochemistry and sensors. Recently, the emergence of black TiO2 nanomaterial has triggered world‐wide research interest, because of its substantially enhanced solar absorption and the improved photocatalytic activities. Here, a variety of synthetic strategies of black TiO2 are outlined, and the structural and chemical features, band structures and electronic properties of the black TiO2 nanomaterials are described in details, along with their photocatalytic performances as well as some other new applications. Black TiO2 nanomaterials have aroused world‐widely scientific interests, owing to their enhanced optical absorption properties and promising visible‐light photocatalysis. The recent progress in the research of black TiO2 is reviewed here, including their synthetic approaches, crystal structure and chemical characters, unique band structure and electronic properties, and their photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:The amorphous TiO2 derived from hydroxylation has become an effective approach for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity of TiO2 since a kind of special black TiO2 was prepared by engineering disordered layers on TiO2 nanocrystals via hydrogenation. In this contribution, we prepared totally amorphous TiO2 with various degrees of blackness by introducing hydroxyls via ultrasonic irradiation, through which can we remarkably enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 with improved light harvesting and narrowed band gap.

Abstract:Black titanium dioxide is a broadband-absorbing photocatalyst characterized by integration of atomic hydrogen within the outer layers of anatase nanomaterials. In addition to is broad absorbance of visible to near-infrared light, the material has some intrinsic upconversion ability, which is greatly enhanced by the addition of a niobium oxide shell. This yields a highly active photocatalyst as demonstrated in photodegradation experiments.

Abstract:Utilizing solar energy for hydrogen evolution is a great challenge for its insufficient visible-light power conversion. In this paper, we report a facile magnesiothermic reduction of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles under Ar atmosphere and at 550 °C followed by acid treatment to synthesize reduced black TiO2 powders, which possesses a unique crystalline core–amorphous shell structure composed of disordered surface and oxygen vacancies and shows significantly improved optical absorption in the visible region. The unique core–shell structure and high absorption enable the reduced black TiO2 powders to exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity, including splitting of water in the presence of Pt as a cocatalyst and degradation of methyl blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. Photocatalytic evaluations indicate that the oxygen vacancies play key roles in the catalytic process. The maximum hydrogen production rates are 16.1 and 163 μmol h−1 g−1 under the full solar wavelength range of light and visible light, respectively. This facile and versatile method could be potentially used for large scale production of colored TiO2 with remarkable enhancement in the visible light absorption and solar-driven hydrogen production.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation due to their advantages of low cost, chemical stability, and relatively high photo-activity. However, applications of TiO2 have been restricted in the ultraviolet range because of the wide band gap. Broadening the light absorption of TiO2 nanomaterials is an efficient way to improve the photocatalytic activity. Thus, black TiO2 with extended light response range in the visible light and even near infrared light has been extensively exploited as efficient photocatalysts in the last decade. This review represents an attempt to conclude the recent developments in black TiO2 nanomaterials synthesized by modified treatment, which presented different structure, morphological features, reduced band gap, and enhanced solar energy harvesting efficiency. Special emphasis has been given to the newly developed synthetic methods, porous black TiO2, and the approaches for further improving the photocatalytic activity of black TiO2. Various black TiO2, doped black TiO2, metal-loaded black TiO2 and black TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic applications and mechanisms in the field of energy and environment are summarized in this review, to provide useful insights and new ideas in the related field.

Abstract:Utilizing solar energy for hydrogen generation and water cleaning is a great challenge due to insufficient visible-light power conversion. Here we report a mass production approach to synthesize black titania by aluminium reduction. The obtained sample possesses a unique crystalline core–amorphous shell structure (TiO2@TiO2−x). The black titania absorbs ∼65% of the total solar energy by improving visible and infrared absorption, superior to the recently reported ones (∼30%) and pristine TiO2 (∼5%). The unique core–shell structure (TiO2@TiO2−x) and high absorption boost the photocatalytic water cleaning and water splitting. The black titania is also an excellent photoelectrochemical electrode exhibiting a high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (1.7%). A large photothermic effect may enable black titania “capture” solar energy for solar thermal collectors. The Al-reduced amorphous shell is proved to be an excellent candidate to absorb more solar light and receive more efficient photocatalysis.

Abstract:Herein, a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly strategy to prepare black TiO2 nanoparticles has been reported; the procedure combines the ultraviolet light irradiation and low-temperature annealing (300 degrees C) with continuous N-2 flow under atmospheric pressure. The samples were characterized by the various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microcopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic degradation of the organic contaminant Rhodamine B was investigated when black TiO2 nanoparticles was irradiaed with ultraviolet light and visible light. The black TiO2 material possesses an anatase phase and is able to absorb a high amount of photon energy in the visible light region, effectively driving photochemical degradation reactions. The enhancement of the photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the following: first, the hydrogen ions decrease the localized Ti3+ states (which are also the e(-)-h(+) recombination centers) leading to a more efficient separation of the electron-hole pairs; secondly, the conduction band electrons in black TiO2 nanoparticles are responsible for strong absorption of visible light. Consequently, the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B can be significantly enhanced using black TiO2 nanoparticles. This work proves that hydrogenated black TiO2 promotes the absorption of the entire electromagnetic spectrum and exhibits high photocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as an important semiconductor is widely used in the fields of solar cell, solar thermal collectors, and photocatalysis, but the visible-light power harvest remains insufficient due to the little effective visible-light absorption and many carrier-recombination centers originating from the wide band gap structure. Herein, conductive black titania (BT) nanomaterials with crystalline-TiO 2 -core/amorphous-TiO 2−x -shell structure prepared through two-zone Al-reduction route are found efficient in photocatalyzing the degradation of organic pollutants to environmentally friendly products under full solar and even visible light irradiation. The unique core–shell structure and numerous surface oxygen vacancies or Ti 3+ species in the amorphous layer accompanying prominent physicochemical properties of narrow band gap, high carrier concentration, high electron mobility, and excellent separation and transportation of photoinduced e − −h + pairs result in exceptional photocatalytic efficiency. The optimized BT-500 (pristine TiO 2 treated at 500 °C during two-zone Al-reduction process) catalyst achieves superior photocatalytic degradation rates for toluene and ethyl acetate as well as an excellent photostability with high degradation efficiency of 93% for the 6th reuse.
