Abstract:Focused on the remediation of water bodies which polluted by the antibiotics, a novel hierarchical structure CuBi2O4/Bi2MoO6 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst with 2D nanosheets on 1D microrods structure were synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The broad-spectrum antibiotics, including tetracyclines and quinolones drugs, were used as the target pollutants, which were degraded under visible light to evaluate photocatalytic performance of the prepared photocatalysts. Notably, the 10 wt% CuBi2O4/Bi2MoO6 photocatalyst displays the optimum photocatalytic performance in the degradation of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin (100 mL, 20 mg/L; 72.8%, 74.0%, 74.4% and 36.7% degradation rates and 34.4%, 52.4%, 48.2% and 25.5% mineralization rates within 60 min) under visible irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The photocatalytic reaction mechanism over CuBi2O4/Bi2MoO6 was also uncovered in detail by the active species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. Finally, the possible photodegradation pathways of TC was proposed on the basis of the intermediates detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC–MS).

Abstract:Traditional powder-coated photoanodes suffer from poor interfacial-tightness and high complex interfacial mass transfer resistance. In addition, the treatment rate of photoanodes on antibiotics is limited due to the electrode active area and the mutual restriction between the electrode and the height of treated liquid. Ar-ZnO/Ti 3+ -TiO 2 -NTs photoanode in this study solved the above problems. Ti 3+ -TiO 2 nanotubes (Ti 3+ -TiO 2 -NTs) after electrochemical reduction were used as the conductive substrate. MOF-5 was grown in situ on the substrate by pulsed deposition and microwave hydrothermal self-assembly, which provided both high active sites and effective photosensitivity. Finally, Ar-ZnO/Ti 3+ -TiO 2 -NTs photoanode was constructed after reduction atmosphere sculpture. The stable structure of TiO 2 hollow nanotubes and the three-dimensional network structure of MOF-5 were beneficial to improve the high-pressure resistance of the structure in the process of photoanode application. Meanwhile, the reduced self-doping of Ti 3+ enhanced the substrate conductivity, the pulsed deposition of Zn decreased ion leaching, and the microwave accelerated the self-assembly process of MOF-5. The Ar-ZnO/Ti 3+ -TiO 2 -NTs photoanode performed excellent degradability for multiple antibiotics (greater than 90%, 60 min) with the photoelectrocatalytic synergy factor of 21.16, and the performance was maintained after three months. This work enriched photoelectrode development, and provide novel ideas for MOFs to participate in antibiotic removal.

Abstract:A series of two-dimensional catalysts (LFCO/Ti 3 C 2 -x) were prepared by dispersing perovskite on layered Ti 3 C 2 for microwave-combined PMS catalyzed degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Under the optimal treatment conditions (10% Ti 3 C 2 composite, 1.5 g·L −1 catalyst dosage, 1 mM PMS concentration and initial pH = 7.0), the catalyst achieved 96.49% CIP removal efficiency within 14 min. The addition of Ti 3 C 2 contributed to the granulation and homogeneous dispersion of perovskite, which facilitated charge transfer and generation of active species. The catalyst characterization before and after the reaction and experiments related to the quenching of the active species confirmed that the thermal effect of MW irradiation promoted the generation of ROS. The non-thermal effect of MW enhanced the electron transfer ability of the catalytic system and accelerated the oxidation of metal sites, which indirectly promoted the generation of ROS. Combined with LC-MS and DFT calculations, the degradation pathway and mechanism of CIP were revealed. Meanwhile, the ecotoxicity of CIP intermediates calculated using ecological structure–activity relationship software indicates that they are much less harmful or not toxic. This work opens new perspectives for the application of perovskite-MXene based catalysts in the rapid and efficient catalytic activation of MW combined AOPs for antibiotic degradation.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we prepared Zn-MOFs as an ordinary, low-cost, and efficiency method taking advantage of zinc( ii ) acetate monohydrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid in microwave-assisted ball milling. The Zn-MOFs were measured via scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry. We explored its use as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and Congo red from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the kinetic model was appropriate for the removal of organic pollutants. In general, it is feasible, inexpensive, and effective to use metal organic framework (MOF) to treat waste liquid. Therefore, our findings indicate that Zn-MOFs have broad application vista in wastewater purification.

Photothermal nano-confinement reactor with bimetallic sites for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation in antibiotic degradation

Abstract:In recent years, photothermal-assisted Fenton-like degradation of organic pollutants has become a prominent green method in environmental pollution control. Nevertheless, the design of suitable catalysts remains a significant challenge for this approach. Herein, zeolite-imidazolate framework-derived CoMn bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in hollow carbon nanofibers (CoMnHCF) have been developed as a photothermal nano-confinement reactor with multiple active sites to enhance reaction performance and promote peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Under light irradiation, the local temperature within the porous spaces of CoMnHCF was significantly higher than the liquid temperature. The confined space concentrated heat, minimized thermal loss, and effectively utilizes this feature to activate PMS for antibiotic degradation. The results demonstrated that this system efficiently degraded various antibiotics, including tetracycline hydrochloride, levofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin and chlorotetracycline. Photothermal contribution analysis revealed that thermal effects predominate in this system. Further DFT simulations explored the coordination environment of metal elements and the properties of related pollutants, predicting potential structures and reaction sites. A series of water quality experiments and cyclic tests demonstrated the system's significant application potential. This study offered new insights into advancing the integrated use of photothermal conversion and nano-confinement reactor activation of PMS in sewage purification.

Abstract:Water pollution has reached alarming levels due to the overuse of antibiotics, and photocatalysis is considered to be a green and efficient degradation technology for the treatment of water pollution caused by antibiotics. In this paper, a series of p-n heterojunction Bi2MoO6/Cu2O composite photocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, UV–Vis-DRS, PL, and EIS. The photocatalytic activities of the photocatalysts were analyzed based on the degradation of two antibiotics under visible light illumination. Results showed a removal rate of 88% and 94% for chlortetracycline (CTC) and tetracycline (TC), respectively. The corresponding first-order kinetic curves indicated that the reaction rates were 4.2 and 7.9 times higher than those of the Bi2MoO6 and Cu2O monomers. The enhanced removal efficiency of antibiotics is ascribed to the improved light absorption and electron-hole pair transport channels, facilitated by the formation of p-n heterojunction within the catalyst. Further, a possible degradation mechanism was proposed. Finally, the intermediate products were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and a possible photocatalytic degradation pathway of CTC was proposed. Based on the present study and experimental observations, Bi2MoO6/Cu2O as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst is suggested to be a promising candidate for the removal of antibiotics.

Abstract:The designation and fabrication of heterogeneous photocatalyst with superior redox capability is an important technique for emerging pollutants treatment. In this study, we designed the Z-scheme heterojunction of stable 3D-Bi2MoO6@MoO3/PU, which could not only accelerate the migration and separation in photogenerated carriers, but also stabilize the separation rate of photo-generation carriers. In the Bi2MoO6@MoO3/PU photocatalytic system, 88.89% of oxytetracycline (OTC, 10 mg L-1) and 78.25%-84.59% of multiple antibiotics (SDZ, NOR, AMX and CFX, 10 mg L-1) could be decomposed within 20 min under the optimized reaction condition, revealing the superior performance and potential application value. Specifically, the morphology, chemical structure and optical properties detection of Bi2MoO6@MoO3/PU greatly affected the direct Z-scheme electron transferring mode in the p-n type heterojunction. Besides, the center dot OH, h(+), center dot O-2(-) dominated the photoactivation process through ring-opening, dihydroxylation, deamination, decarbonization and demethylation in OTC decomposition. Expectantly, the stability and universality of Bi2MoO6@MoO3/PU composite photocatalyst would further broaden the practical application and demonstrated that the potential of photocatalytic technique in antibiotics pollutants for wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Microwave-induced catalytic degradation is considered amongst the most efficient techniques to remove antibiotic such as chlortetracycline from contaminated water. Described here is a new microwave-induced oxidation catalyst based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated uniformly with nanoparticles of Fe3O4. The combination of dielectric loss and magnetic loss of the material contributed to its stronger microwave absorption and the ability to produce more "hot spots". These hot spots promoted the oxidation of common antibiotics such as chlortetracycline, tetracycline, and oxytetracycline under microwave irradiation. Experiments with the addition of scavenger showed that hydroxy radicals (•OH) together with superoxide radicals (•O2-) contributed to the antibiotics removal as well. The final degradation products included CO2 and NO3- as confirmed by mass spectroscopy and ion chromatography analyses. The results indicated that the Fe3O4/CNTs was an efficient catalyst for microwave-induced oxidation.

Abstract:Heavy use of antibiotics keeping in the environment seriously threatens ecological security and human health. Photodegradation through Bi-based photocatalysts is regarded as an advanced green technology in solving environmental problems. Nevertheless, its photocatalytic activity is limited by the fast recombination of photogenerated e− and h+ pairs and the lower photo quantum efficiency. Herein, MOFs-derived Bi2O3@C with rich oxygen vacancies (OVs) has been designed and synthesized via infrared rapid thermal annealing technology, which increases the recrystallization temperature and reduces the grain size. The technology keeps the shape of the MOFs and maintains a large surface area with a high degree of dispersion of active components. The increased effective reactive sites and rich OVs of Bi2O3@C have great photoelectrochemical properties, high utilization of light energy and excellent electron transfer exhibiting efficient photodegradation for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Therefore, the remove ratio of TCH reached 88% after irradiation of 5 W LED for 120 min. Moreover, the photodegradation mechanism is deeply explored through in-situ EPR and DRIFTS. 1O2 is the main reactive oxygen species to oxidize and mineralize the TCH. This MOFs-derived through rapid thermal annealing strategy would provide valuable insights to prepare inorganic nanomaterials with rich OVs for photocatalyst.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted catalytic oxidation technology has become an effective technology for rapid removal of organic pollutants in wastewater. In this research, the removal of methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solution by CuFe2O4 loaded on carbon nanotubes (CuFe2O4/CNTs) under microwave irradiation was studied. The effects of different loadings (1:2, 1:4, 1:8) of CuFe2O4 on the dielectric loss, magnetic loss, dielectric loss factor, magnetic loss factor, and reflection loss of composite materials were studied. The results showed that the microwave adsorption performance was improved by loading CuFe2O4 on CNTs. These different composites were further characterized by SEM, FTIR, and XRD techniques. In addition, this article also studied the effects of different microwave irradiation time, pH, and ionic factors on the degradation of MO. In particular, the mechanism of MO degradation by composite materials under different pH conditions was also studied in detail. The results showed that the removal rate reaches 97% with 5 min under the best conditions, and the composite material had good anti-interference performance. This study may provide a new option to degrade organic dye in wastewater treating.

Abstract:A novel Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4 photocatalyst is successfully constructed adopting isoelectric point method, and is introduced into integrated microwave-ultraviolet (MW-UV) system for the degradation of tetracycline antibiotics in aqueous solution. The influences of particle ratio (CdWO4: ZnFe2O4), irradiation time, MW power, initial concentration, catalyst dosage and reuse times on the degradation in the CdWO4/ZnFe2O4/MW-UV system are examined. The possible mechanism of Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4 microwave-photo catalytic degradation is proposed. The results indicate the Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4 photocatalyst possesses superior dual responsive catalytic activity in integrated MW-UV system. In particular, the production of MW plasma promotes the isolation of the photogenerated carriers, improving the redox capability of the catalytic system. The Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4 at 1.0:8.0 particle ratios displays optimal dual responsive catalytic activity. Magnetic Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4 retains high dual responsive catalytic activity after 5 cycles. Besides, •OH plays a dominant role in the degradation of CdWO4/ZnFe2O4/MW-UV catalytic system. Hence, the dual responsive Z-scheme CdWO4/ZnFe2O4/MW-UV approach has great potential in treating those water and wastewater with various concentrations of antibiotic.

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics in contemporary healthcare has led to their accumulation in natural water systems, contributing to a growing resistance among bacteria and posing a significant challenge to the sustainable development of human society. Photocatalysis has emerged as an effective technique to mitigate antibiotic pollution in water. This study focuses on developing and synthesizing a visible light responsive metal–organic framework (MOF), Cu-NTC, which employs copper as the metal node instead of the usual choice of molybdenum, and the rigid 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid (H 4 NTC) as the organic ligand. A pivotal step in the synthesis involved the partial reduction of Cu 2+ , leading to the formation of Cu 0 /Cu + doping. This doping, together with oxygen vacancies (OVs), introduces a localized state that functions as a doped energy level, thus prolonging carrier lifetime and enhancing the visible light photocatalytic activity of Cu-NTC. Remarkably, Cu-NTC achieved photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of 84.5 % for tetracycline (TC) and 96.1 % for norfloxacin (NFX) after 30 min in darkness followed by 120 min under visible light exposure. Moreover, Cu-NTC exhibited effective removal capabilities for other antibiotics within the quinolone and tetracycline groups, underscoring their potential for broader applications in water purification.

Abstract:A simple polyacrylamide gel method combined with low temperature sintering technology has been used to synthesize the C‐O functional groups grafted MgAl2O4/C3N4/YMnO3 (MAO‐CN‐YMO) heterojunction photocatalysts with enhanced visible‐light‐induced photo‐degradation towards oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC‐HCl). A variety of characterization methods are used to gain insight into the phase purity, crystal structure, microstructure, functional group information, elemental composition, surface defect, light response capability, and photocatalytic activity of the as‐synthesized samples. The influences of the mass ratios of mCN/mYMO, mCN/mMAO and mMAO/(mCN+mYMO) in CN‐YMO, CN‐MAO and MAO‐CN‐YMO heterojunction photocatalysts on the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of OTC‐HCl was also discussed, and the optimal mass ratio of mMAO/(mCN+mYMO) is identified as 15 wt%. The photocatalytic experiments confirmed that the MAO‐CN‐YMO heterojunction photocatalysts had high selectivity for the degradation of antibiotics. The prediction of the photocatalytic activity of the MAO‐CN‐YMO heterojunction photocatalysts for the degradation of OTC‐HCl was made by a variety of intelligent algorithm models. The results of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) are highly consistent with the experimental results. Combined with the energy band theory and the characterization results of high performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐MS), the free radicals in the reaction solution preferentially attacked the ‐CH3, ‐NCH2 and ‐OH of OTC‐HCl during the degradation of OTC‐HCl by MAO‐CN‐YMO heterostructure photocatalysts. And then attack ‐C = O and ‐C = O‐NH2, and finally perform ring‐opening reaction to degrade OTC‐HCl into non‐toxic and harmless products of small molecules such as CO2, H2O and NH4+. This work provides a new idea for the development of novel double p‐n junction MAO‐CN‐YMO heterojunction photocatalysts for antibiotic degradation and the prediction of photocatalytic activity of multiple heterojunction photocatalysts by intelligent algorithms. Abstract:In this work, a novel Z-scheme SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 catalytic system with microwave-ultraviolet (MW-UV) double-response activity was constructed using MW hydrothermal method for the degradation of tetracycline in water, as a target pollutant. The effects of several parameters including mass ratio (SrTiO3:MnFe2O4), irradiation time, MW power, and catalyst reuse cycles on the catalytic activity of SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 under MW-UV were also investigated. The degradation mechanism on the Z-scheme SrTiO3/MnFe2O4/MW-UV catalytic system was proposed. The results reveal that the combination of MW-induced catalytic and UV photocatalytic oxidation technology achieves superior SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 catalytic performance. The Z-scheme SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 system displays high catalytic activity under MW-UV. Particularly, the generated MW plasma accelerates electron transfer and separation of e −-h + pair, which promotes the enhancement of redox capacity and the degradation of organic pollutants. At the 1.0:1.0 mass ratio, SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 has higher catalytic activity, and TC (22.0 mg/L) can be completely degraded within 20.0 min under MW (300 W)-UV (200 W) irradiation. Moreover, the catalytic activity of SrTiO3/MnFe2O4 remains high after five reuse cycles. During the degradation, the OH plays a major role, while the O2 − and h+ play relatively minor roles. Therefore, SrTiO3/MnFe2O4/MW-UV technology demonstrates to be promising in the treatment of antibiotics at different concentrations in water and wastewater.

Abstract:Photocatalytic materials are one of the most promising alternatives of antibiotics for wound disinfection, and the bacteria-killing efficacy is restrained by photocatalytic performance. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 MXene-anchored 2D metal-organic frame (MOF) nanosheets were constructed to enhance the photocatalytic performance through interface engineering strategy by in-situ growth of 2D MOF on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. On the one hand, the close contact between them decreased the bandgap of 2D MOF, improving the yield of photogenerated electrons. On the other hand, it not only provided a rapid electron transfer channel across the interface but also induced the formation of Schottky junction at the interface. Consequently, the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs was significantly enhanced by rapid transfer and inhibition of electron backflow. Thus, under 660 nm plus 808 nm light, MOF/Ti 3 C 2 killed 99.73 ± 0.12% of Staphylococcus aureus . This work will provide insights for designing photo-responsive materials through in-situ interfacial engineering strategies.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon with diversified structure and composition have received tremendous attention in persulfate advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Here, layer-by-layer MXene-like carbon sheet/carbon nanotubes (MCS/CNTs) were facilely prepared by pyrolysis of homologous MOF precursors. To present the influence of structure and composition on catalytic performance, different pyrolysis temperatures range from 700 to 1000 degrees C were applied to treat MOF precursor, and common antibiotic tetracycline hydro-chloride (TTCH) was selected as the targeted pollutant to degrade. The results indicated that under 900 degrees C generated MCS/CNTs-9 with maximum specific surface area displayed much higher adsorption capacity (35.9%) and faster degradation rate (0.26 min(-1)) than that of the others. The degradation mechanism was confirmed by radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. Degradation pathway was inferred by liquid chromatography-mass spectrograph (LC-MS), and a biotoxicity experiment of degradation products was carried out by culture of Escherichia coli. This work promotes the development of environmental nanomaterials and demonstrates the possibility of AOPs in water remediation.

Abstract:The designation and fabrication of heterogeneous photocatalyst with superior redox capability is an important technique for emerging pollutants treatment. In this study, we designed the Z-scheme heterojunction of stable 3D-Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU, which could not only accelerate the migration and separation in photogenerated carriers, but also stabilize the separation rate of photo-generation carriers. In the Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU photocatalytic system, 88.89% of oxytetracycline (OTC, 10 mg L −1 ) and 78.25%–84.59% of multiple antibiotics (SDZ, NOR, AMX and CFX, 10 mg L −1 ) could be decomposed within 20 min under the optimized reaction condition, revealing the superior performance and potential application value. Specifically, the morphology, chemical structure and optical properties detection of Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU greatly affected the direct Z-scheme electron transferring mode in the p-n type heterojunction. Besides, the ·OH, h + , ·O 2 − dominated the photoactivation process through ring-opening, dihydroxylation, deamination, decarbonization and demethylation in OTC decomposition. Expectantly, the stability and universality of Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU composite photocatalyst would further broaden the practical application and demonstrated that the potential of photocatalytic technique in antibiotics pollutants for wastewater remediation.

Abstract:A photocatalyst (PC) with an optimized morphology exhibits better pollutant photodegradation because of the augmentation of the surface area available for redox reactions and light harvesting. Here, we synthesized a Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 (FMO) PC from a coordinated Fe metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor. During this process, FMO MOF was pyrolyzed to rearrange the organic structure of the Fe-MOF precursor. This synthesis strategy resulted in a unique PC made of stacked nanosheets (NSs) organized in a bird-nest structure. Compared to smooth FMO FC spheres synthesized from uncoordinated Fe ions, FMO MOF exhibited a 3.6-time larger surface. In addition, FMO MOF NSs were accompanied by smaller nanoparticle and quantum dot satellites, which expedited charge separation. FMO MOF was evaluated for the photodegradation of the polluting antibiotics tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTCH). The PC readily photodegraded above 90 % of both antibiotics and completely mineralized a large fraction. Illuminated FMO MOF oxidized TCH and OTCH 1.6 to 3.0 times faster than FMO FC and was also reusable. A larger surface exposing more redox sites and a better charge separation efficiency were responsible for the improved photooxidation performance of FMO MOF . Thus, these results describe how a MOF precursor can be employed to develop a promising FMO PC capable of removing recalcitrant antibiotics.
