Abstract:Structured light, which exhibits nontrivial intensity, phase, and polarization patterns in space, has key applications ranging from imaging and 3D micromanipulation to classical and quantum communication. However, to date, its application to molecular chirality has been limited by the weakness of magnetic interactions. Here we structure light's local handedness in space to introduce and realize an enantio-sensitive interferometer for efficient chiral recognition without magnetic interactions, which can be seen as an enantio-sensitive version of Young's double slit experiment. Upon interaction with isotropic chiral media, such chirality-structured light effectively creates chiral emitters of opposite handedness, located at different positions in space. We show that if the distribution of light's handedness breaks left-right symmetry, the interference of these chiral emitters leads to unidirectional bending of the emitted light, in opposite directions in media of opposite handedness, even if the number of the left-handed and right-handed emitters excited in the medium is exactly the same. Our work introduces the concepts of polarization of chirality and chirality-polarized light, exposes the immense potential of sculpting light's local chirality, and offers novel opportunities for efficient chiral discrimination, enantio-sensitive optical molecular fingerprinting and imaging on ultrafast time scales.

Abstract:Superchiral light, generated by the interference of two counter-propagating circularly polarized light (CPL) with same frequency, opposite handedness and different intensity, exhibits enhanced dissymmetry in its interaction with chiral molecules, and has the potential for ultrasensitive detection and characterization of chiral molecules. It is anticipated that the enhanced optical dissymmetry in superchiral light (SCL) field may be utilized to promote asymmetric photochemical reactions efficiency. Herein we reported SCL impart greater chiral bias to trigger asymmetric photo-polymerization reaction from initially achiral diacetylene (DA) monomer, and the enhanced optical dissymmetry for whole polydiacetylene (PDA) films could be achieved. An explanation based on the chiral transfer and amplification of chiral bias from SCL during the polymerization process has been proposed. Moreover, thus formed chiral PDA films polymerized by SCL exhibited enhanced enantioselective recognition ability, and can serve as a direct visual probe for the discrimination of some specific enantiomers.

Enhanced Chiral Mie Scattering by a Dielectric Sphere within a Superchiral Light Field

Abstract:A superchiral field, which can generate a larger chiral signal than circularly polarized light, is a promising mechanism to improve the capability to characterize chiral objects. In this paper, Mie scattering by a chiral sphere is analyzed based on the T-matrix method. The chiral signal by circularly polarized light can be obviously enhanced due to the Mie resonances. By employing superchiral light illumination, the chiral signal is further enhanced by 46.8% at the resonance frequency. The distribution of the light field inside the sphere is calculated to explain the enhancement mechanism. The study shows that a dielectric sphere can be used as an excellent platform to study the chiroptical effects at the nanoscale.
Light-triggered Modulation of Supramolecular Chirality

Abstract:Dynamically controlling the supramolecular chirality is of great significance in development of functional chiral materials, which is thus essential for the specific function implementation. As an external energy input, light is remote and accurate for modulating chiral assemblies. In non-polarized light control, some photochemically reactive units (e. g., azobenzene, alpha-cyanostilbene, spiropyran, anthracene) or photo-induced directionally rotating molecular motors were designed to drive chiral transfer or amplification. Besides, photoexcitation induced assembly based physical approach was also explored recently to regulate supramolecular chirality beyond photochemical reactions. In addition, circularly polarized light was applied to induce asymmetric arrangement of organic molecules and asymmetric photochemical synthesis of inorganic metallic nanostructures, in which both wavelength and handedness of circularly polarized light have effects on the induced supramolecular chirality. Although light-triggered chiral assemblies have been widely applied in photoelectric materials, biomedical fields, soft actuator, chiral catalysis and chiral sensing, there is a lack of systematic review on this topic. In this review, we summarized the recent studies and perspectives in the constructions and applications of light-responsive chiral assembled systems, aiming to provide better knowledge for the development of multifunctional chiral nanomaterials.

Structuring the local handedness of synthetic chiral light: global chirality versus polarization of chirality

Abstract:Synthetic chiral light enables ultrafast and highly efficient imaging of molecular chirality. Unlike standard circularly polarized light, the handedness of synthetic chiral light does not rely on the spatial structure of the light field: it is encoded locally , in the chiral trajectory that the tip of the electric-field vector draws in time, at each point in space. Synthetic chiral light that is both locally and globally chiral [Ayuso et al, Nat Photon 13, 866 (2019)] allows us to selectively quench the nonlinear response of a selected molecular enantiomer while maximizing it in its mirror twin at the level of total signal intensities. Synthetic chiral light that exhibits polarization of chirality [Ayuso et al, Nat Commun 12, 3951 (2021)] allows us to realize a chiral version of Young's double-slit experiment that leads to enantio-sensitive light bending. Here we connect these new concepts, and show how one can structure the local and global handedness of synthetic chiral light in space to create optical fields which can be both globally chiral and chirality polarized. Using state-of-the-art computational modeling, we show how these local and global properties are imprinted in the enantio-sensitive response of chiral molecules, creating exciting opportunities for ultrafast, all-optical and highly efficient imaging of molecular chirality.

Abstract:Detecting and controlling the chirality of materials play an essential role in exploring nature, providing new avenues for material creation, discrimination, and manipulation. In such tasks, chiral reagents are essential in defining or enhancing the chiral dichroism response. However, ignoring their influences on the symmetry of the medium hamper the ability to control and induce asymmetric synthesis. Here, we propose a simple but versatile chirality transfer method for synthesizing and manipulating the chirality of medium. The proposed method induces the dispersion of light in a neutral atomic system, allowing to deterministically and tunably control the chirality transfer using a helical field. First, we theoretically analyze the mechanism for this optically induced chirality transfer. Afterwards, we experimentally study the enantio-sensitive feature of the medium exposed to the auxiliary chiral field. This result can be suppressed or enhanced in a deterministic enantio-selection, opening up an efficient way to manipulate asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract:Locally chiral light is an emerging tool for probing and controlling molecular chirality. It can generate large and freely adjustable enantioselectivities in purely electric-dipole effects, offering its major advantages over traditional chiral light. However, the existing types of locally chiral light are phase-mismatched, and thus the global efficiencies are greatly reduced compared with the maximum single-point efficiencies or even vanish. Here, we propose a scheme to generate phase-matched locally chiral light. To confirm this advantage, we numerically show the robust highly efficient global control of enantiospecific electronic state transfer of methyloxirane at nanoseconds. Our work potentially constitutes the starting point for developing more efficient chiroptical techniques for the studies of chiral molecules.

Chiral polaritonics: cavity-mediated enantioselective excitation condensation

Abstract:Separation of the two mirror images of a chiral molecule, the enantiomers, is a historically complicated problem of major relevance for biological systems. Since chiral molecules are optically active, it has been speculated that strong coupling to circularly polarized fields may be used as a general procedure to unlock enantiospecific reactions. In this work, we focus on how chiral cavities can be used to drive asymmetry in the photochemistry of chiral molecular systems. We first show that strong coupling to circularly polarized fields leads to enantiospecific Rabi splittings, an effect that displays a collective behavior in line with other strong coupling phenomena. Additionally, entanglement with circularly polarized light generates an asymmetry in the enantiomer population of the polaritons, leading to a condensation of the excitation on a preferred molecular configuration. These results confirm that chiral cavities represent a tantalizing opportunity to drive asymmetric photochemistry in enantiomeric mixtures.

Abstract:Enantio-conversion with the help of electromagnetic fields is an essential issue due to the chirality-dependence of many chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical processes. Here, we propose a method for this issue based on a five-level double-$\Delta$ model of chiral molecules. By utilizing the breaking of left-right symmetry in the two $\Delta$-type sub-structures, we can establish the chiral-state-selective excitation with one chiral ground state being excited to an achiral excited state and the other one being undisturbed. In the meanwhile, the achiral excited state will relax to the two chiral ground states. The two effects simultaneously acting on the chiral mixtures can convert molecules of different chiralities to the ones of the same chirality, i.e., the enantio-conversion via optical pumping. With typical parameters in gas-phase experiments, we numerically show that highly efficient enantio-conversion can be achieved. Our method works in the appearance of decoherences and without the precise control of pulse-durations (pulse-areas) and/or pulse-shapes. These advantages offer it promising features in promoting the future exploring of enantio-conversion.

Enhancement of Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity via Circularly Polarized Light

Abstract:The notion of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has attracted intensive research interest recently. However, the practical applications of the CISS effects face challenges due to relatively low spin polarization. In this Letter, we propose a non-perturbative theory illustrating how circularly polarized (CP) light enhances CISS effects through strong light-matter interactions. We introduce a Floquet electronic friction model to study the nonadiabatic dynamics and spin transport through a chiral molecule in a molecule junction subjected to external driving. Our results show that the interplay of the nonadiabatic effects and light-matter interactions can significantly ($>90\%$) enhance electron spin polarization under CP light. Our predictions can be very useful in experiments for using CP light to control spin current in chiral molecular junctions.

Chiral coherent control of electronic population transfer: towards all-optical and highly enantioselective photochemistry

Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated highly enantioselective population transfer among rotational states using microwave fields with non-coplanar polarizations, a milestone in our ability to control chiral molecules. Extending this ability to the optical domain would open the door to all-optical enantioselective photochemistry, the next milestone in this direction. Here we show that the spatial variation of the field presents a major challenge along this route, limiting the interaction region to a thin layer with a thickness of the order of a wavelength. We provide a solution to this restriction by carefully designing the quantum pathways leading to the excited state. Our simulations reveal that the proposed scheme can result in differences of up to 19% in the excited state populations of R and S carvone. This is a major improvement over what is possible with circularly polarized light (~0.01%) and brings all-optical enantioselective photochemistry within reach for practical applications.

Abstract:Circularly polarized (CP) light has shown great potential in quantum computing, optical communications, and three-dimensional displays. It is still a challenge to produce high-efficiency and high-purity CP light. Herein, we proposed a strategy to design chiral organic small molecules for CP light generation. These kinds of chiral molecules are formed by achiral light-emitting groups and achiral alkyl chains through conformational lock, which indicates that chirality can also be introduced into achiral light-emitting groups through rational molecular design. The chirality of these molecules can be further tuned by changing the length of the alkyl chains connecting the diketopyrrolopyrrole unit. The chiroptical properties of these molecules are confirmed by calculated electronic circular dichroism and chiral emission spectra, and further confirmed in experiments. The strategy developed in this work will greatly enlarge the candidate library of chiral luminescent materials.

Abstract:Chiral organic molecules offer a promising platform for exploring circularly polarized lasing, which, however, faces a great challenge that the spatial separation of molecular chiral and luminescent centers limits chiroptical activity. Here we develop a helically chiral supramolecular system with completely overlapped chiral and luminescent units for realizing high-performance circularly polarized lasing. Adaptive helical chirality is obtained by incorporating chiral agents into organic microcrystals. Benefiting from the efficient coupling of stimulated emission with the adaptive helical chirality, the supramolecular microcrystals enable high-performance circularly polarized lasing emission with dissymmetry factors up to ~ 0.7. This work opens up the way to rational design of chiral organic materials for circularly polarized lasing.

Plasmonic and Photonic Enhancement of Chiral Near‐Fields

Abstract:Chiral near‐fields build a bridge to match the chiral molecules and light wavelengths. Employing localized surface plasmons, it is effective to generate and manipulate the highly enhanced superchiral near‐field, thus strong circular dichroism signals can be obtained. This review presents the principles and state‐of‐the‐art studies on the properties and applications of plasmonic and photonic enhanced chiral near‐fields. A chiral near‐field with a highly contorted electromagnetic field builds a bridge to match chiral molecules and light wavelengths with large size differences. It significantly enhances the circular dichroism of chiral molecules and has great prospects in chirality sensing, detection, trapping, and other chirality‐related applications. Surface plasmons feature outstanding light‐trapping and electromagnetic‐field‐concentrating abilities. Plasmonic chiral nanostructures facilitate light manipulation to generate superchiral near‐fields. Meanwhile, the nanophotonic structures have attracted significant interest to obtain strong chiral near‐fields due to their unique electromagnetic resonant properties. During the interaction of light and chiral materials, the chiral near‐field not only bridges the light and chiral molecules but is also responsible for the optical activities. This paper reviews state‐of‐the‐art studies on generating or enhancing chiral near‐fields using plasmonic and photonic nanostructures. The principle of chiral near‐fields and the development of chiral near‐fields with plasmonic and photonic nanostructures are reviewed. The properties and applications of enhanced chiral near‐fields for chiral molecule detection, spin‐orbit angular interaction, and the generation of the chiral optical force are examined. Finally, current challenges are discussed and a brief outlook of this field is provided.

Abstract:The accurate detection, classification, and separation of chiral molecules are pivotal for advancing pharmaceutical and biomolecular innovations. Engineered chiral light presents a promising avenue to enhance the interaction between light and matter, offering a noninvasive, high-resolution, and cost-effective method for distinguishing enantiomers. Here, we present a nanostructured platform for surface-enhanced infrared absorption–induced vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) based on an achiral plasmonic system. This platform enables precise measurement, differentiation, and quantification of enantiomeric mixtures, including concentration and enantiomeric excess determination. Our experimental results exhibit a 13 orders of magnitude higher detection sensitivity for chiral enantiomers compared to conventional VCD spectroscopic techniques, accounting for respective path lengths and concentrations. The tunable spectral characteristics of this achiral plasmonic system facilitate the detection of a diverse range of chiral compounds. The platform's simplicity, tunability, and exceptional sensitivity holds remarkable potential for enantiomer classification in drug design, pharmaceuticals, and biological applications.

Abstract:Chiral molecules that do not superimpose on their mirror images are the foundation of all life forms on earth. Chiral molecules exhibit chiroptical responses, i.e., they have different electromagnetic responses to light of different circular polarizations. However, chiroptical responses in natural materials, such as circular dichroism and optical rotation dispersion, are intrinsically small because the size of a chiral molecule is significantly shorter than the wavelength of electromagnetic wave. Conventional technology for enhancing chiroptical signal entails demanding requirements on precise alignment of the chiral molecules to certain nanostructures, which however only leads to a limited performance. Herein, we show a new approach towards enhancement of chiroptical effects through a Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity formed by two handedness-preserving metamirrors operating in the GHz region. We experimentally show that the FP cavity resonator can enhance the optical activity of the chiral molecule by an order of magnitude. Our approach may pave the way towards state-of-the-art chiral sensing applications.
