Abstract:We give a novel proof that primitive recursive functions are closed under nested simple recursion. This new presentation is supplied with a detailed proof which can be easily formalized in small fragments of Peano Arithmetic.

Abstract:We analyze Coquand's game-theoretic interpretation of Peano Arithmetic through the lens of elementary descent recursion. In Coquand's game semantics, winning strategies correspond to infinitary cut-free proofs and cut elimination corresponds to debates between these winning strategies. The proof of cut elimination, i.e., the proof that such debates eventually terminate, is by transfinite induction on certain interaction sequences of ordinals. In this paper, we provide a direct implementation of Coquand's proof, one that allows us to describe winning strategies by descent recursive functions. As a byproduct, we obtain yet another proof of well-known results about provably recursive functions and functionals.

Abstract:Partial functions are a key concept in programming. Without partiality a programming language has limited expressiveness – it is not Turing-complete, hence, it excludes some constructs such as while-loops. In functional programming languages, partiality mostly originates from the non-termination of recursive functions. Corecursive functions are another source of partiality: here, the issue is not termination, but the inability to produce arbitrary large, finite approximations of a theoretically infinite output. Partial functions have been formally studied in the branch of theoretical computer science called domain theory. In this paper we propose to step up the level of formality by using the Coq proof assistant. The main difficulty is that Coq requires all functions to be total, since partiality would break the soundness of its underlying logic. We propose practical solutions for this issue, and others, which appear when one attempts to define and reason about partial (co)recursive functions in a total functional language.

Abstract:Proof formats for SAT solvers have diversified over the last decade, enabling new features such as extended resolution-like capabilities, very general extension-free rules, inclusion of proof hints, and pseudo-boolean reasoning. Interference-based methods have been proven effective, and some theoretical work has been undertaken to better explain their limits and semantics. In this work, we combine the subsumption redundancy notion from (Buss, Thapen 2019) and the overwrite logic framework from (Rebola-Pardo, Suda 2018). Natural generalizations then become apparent, enabling even shorter proofs of the pigeonhole principle (compared to those from (Heule, Kiesl, Biere 2017)) and smaller unsatisfiable core generation.

Bar recursion is not computable via iteration

Abstract:We show that the bar recursion operators of Spector and Kohlenbach, considered as third-order functionals acting on total arguments, are not computable in Gödel’s System T plus minimization, which we show to be equivalent to a programming language with a higher-order iteration construct. The main result is formulated so as to imply the non-definability of bar recursion in T + min within a variety of partial and total models, for instance the Kleene–Kreisel continuous functionals. The paper thus supplies proofs of some results stated in the book by Longley and Normann. The proof of the main theorem makes serious use of the theory of nested sequential procedures (also known as PCF Böhm trees), and proceeds by showing that bar recursion cannot be represented by any sequential procedure within which the tree of nested function applications is well-founded.

Abstract:We provide an explicit characterization of the properties of primitive recursive functions that are decidable or semi-decidable, given a primitive recursive index for the function. The result is much more general as it applies to any c.e. class of total computable functions. This is an analog of Rice and Rice-Shapiro theorem, for restricted classes of total computable functions.

Abstract:Martin-Löf's Intuitionistic Theory of Types is becoming popular for formal reasoning about computer programs. To handle recursion schemes other than primitive recursion, a theory of well-founded relations is presented. Using primitive recursion over higher types, induction and recursion are formally derived for a large class of well-founded relations. Included are < on natural numbers, and relations formed by inverse images, addition, multiplication, and exponentiation of other relations. The constructions are given in full detail to allow their use in theorem provers for Type Theory, such as Nuprl. The theory is compared with work in the field of ordinal recursion over higher types.

A Practical Mode System for Recursive Definitions

Abstract:In call-by-value languages, some mutually-recursive value definitions can be safely evaluated to build recursive functions or cyclic data structures, but some definitions (let rec x = x + 1) contain vicious circles and their evaluation fails at runtime. We propose a new static analysis to check the absence of such runtime failures. We present a set of declarative inference rules, prove its soundness with respect to the reference source-level semantics of Nordlander, Carlsson, and Gill (2008), and show that it can be (right-to-left) directed into an algorithmic check in a surprisingly simple way. Our implementation of this new check replaced the existing check used by the OCaml programming language, a fragile syntactic/grammatical criterion which let several subtle bugs slip through as the language kept evolving. We document some issues that arise when advanced features of a real-world functional language (exceptions in first-class modules, GADTs, etc.) interact with safety checking for recursive definitions.

Abstract:We show that restricting the elimination principle of the natural numbers type in Martin-Löf Type Theory (MLTT) to a universe of types not containing $\Pi$-types ensures that all definable functions are primitive recursive. This extends the concept of primitive recursiveness to general types. We discuss extensions to univalent type theories and other notions of computability. We are inspired by earlier work by Martin Hofmann, work on Joyal's arithmetic universes, and Hugo Herbelin and Ludovic Patey's sketched Calculus of Primitive Recursive Constructions.

Abstract:Consider a decision problem whose instance is a function. Its degree of undecidability, measured by the corresponding class of the arithmetic (or Kleene-Mostowski) hierarchy hierarchy, may depend on whether the instance is a partial recursive or a primitive recursive function. A similar situation happens for results like Rice Theorem (which is false for primitive recursive functions). Classical Recursion Theory deals mainly with the properties of partial recursive functions. We study several natural decision problems related to primitive recursive functions and characterise their degree of undecidability. As an example, we show that, for primitive recursive functions, the injectivity problem is Pi^0_1-complete while the surjectivity problem is Pi_2-complete (omit superscripts from now on). We compare the degree of undecidability (measured by the level in the arithmetic hierarchy) of several primitive recursive decision problems with the corresponding problems of classical Recursion Theory. For instance, the problem "does the codomain of a function have exactly one element?" is Pi_1-complete for primitive recursive functions and belongs to the class [Delta_2 - (Sigma_1 UNION Pi_1)] for partial recursive functions. An important decision problem, "does a given primitive recursive function have at least one zero?" is studied in detail.

Abstract:They run our lives, if you believe the hype in the news, but there is no precise definition of "algorithms" which is generally accepted by the mathematicians, logicians and computer scientists who create and study them. My main aims here are (first) to discuss briefly and point to the few publications that try to deal with this foundational question and (primarily) to outline in Sections 4 and 5 simple proofs of two basic mathematical results about the "elementary recursive algorithms" from specified primitives expressed by recursive (McCarthy) programs.

On Small-depth Frege Proofs for PHP

Abstract:We study Frege proofs for the one-to-one graph Pigeon Hole Principle defined on the $n\times n$ grid where $n$ is odd. We are interested in the case where each formula in the proof is a depth $d$ formula in the basis given by $\land$, $\lor$, and $\neg$. We prove that in this situation the proof needs to be of size exponential in $n^{\Omega (1/d)}$. If we restrict the size of each line in the proof to be of size $M$ then the number of lines needed is exponential in $n/(\log M)^{O(d)}$. The main technical component of the proofs is to design a new family of random restrictions and to prove the appropriate switching lemmas.

Abstract:The general form of safe recursion (or ramified recurrence) can be expressed by an infinite graph rewrite system including unfolding graph rewrite rules introduced by Dal Lago, Martini and Zorzi, in which the size of every normal form by innermost rewriting is polynomially bounded. Every unfolding graph rewrite rule is precedence terminating in the sense of Middeldorp, Ohsaki and Zantema. Although precedence terminating infinite rewrite systems cover all the primitive recursive functions, in this paper we consider graph rewrite systems precedence terminating with argument separation, which form a subclass of precedence terminating graph rewrite systems. We show that for any precedence terminating infinite graph rewrite system G with a specific argument separation, both the runtime complexity of G and the size of every normal form in G can be polynomially bounded. As a corollary, we obtain an alternative proof of the original result by Dal Lago et al.

Abstract:Derived datasets can be defined implicitly or explicitly. An implicit definition (of dataset O in terms of datasets I) is a logical specification involving two distinguished sets of relational symbols. One set of relations is for the "source data" I, and the other is for the "interface data" O. Such a specification is a valid definition of O in terms of I, if any two models of the specification agreeing on I agree on O. In contrast, an explicit definition is a transformation (or "query" below) that produces O from I. Variants of Beth's theorem state that one can convert implicit definitions to explicit ones. Further, this conversion can be done effectively given a proof witnessing implicit definability in a suitable proof system. We prove the analogous implicit-to-explicit result for nested relations: implicit definitions, given in the natural logic for nested relations, can be converted to explicit definitions in the nested relational calculus (NRC). We first provide a model-theoretic argument for this result, which makes some additional connections that may be of independent interest, between NRC queries, interpretations, a standard mechanism for defining structure-to-structure translation in logic, and between interpretations and implicit to definability "up to unique isomorphism". The latter connection uses a variation of a result of Gaifman concerning "relatively categorical" theories. We also provide a proof-theoretic result that provides an effective argument: from a proof witnessing implicit definability, we can efficiently produce an NRC definition. This will involve introducing the appropriate proof system for reasoning with nested sets, along with some auxiliary Beth-type results for this system. As a consequence, we can effectively extract rewritings of NRC queries in terms of NRC views, given a proof witnessing that the query is determined by the views.
