Abstract:Graphene-based sensors exhibit high sensitivity, fast response, and good selectivity towards toxic gases but have low mechanical stability. The combination of graphene and two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is expected to increase the mechanical stability and enhance the adsorption performance of these gas sensors. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that two-dimensional graphene/h-BN double layers can be used as good substrates for gas sensors with a small lattice mismatch of only 1.78%. Moreover, the presence of a h-BN layer widens the band gap by about 38 meV and considerably increases the work function, thus positively affecting the gas adsorption performance. Although these graphene/h-BN heterostructures do not change the physical adsorption mechanism of these sensors concerning the graphene-based materials, these bilayers significantly enhance the sensitivity of these sensors for detecting CO 2 , CO, NO, and NO 2 toxic gases. Particularly, compared to the pristine graphene-based materials, the gas adsorption energies of graphene/h-BN increased by up to 13.78% for the adsorption of NO, and the shortest distances between the graphene/h-BN substrates and adsorbed gas molecules decreased. We also show that the graphene/h-BN heterostructure is more selective towards NO x gases while more inert towards CO x gases, based on the different amounts of charge transferred from the substrate to the adsorbed gas molecules. Using the non-equilibrium Green functions in the context of density functional theory, we quantitatively associated these charge transfers with the reduction of the current passing through these scattering regions. These results demonstrate that graphene/h-BN heterostructures can be exploited as highly sensitive and selective room-temperature gas sensors for detecting toxic gases.

Abstract:Owing to their adjustable optoelectronic and adsorption characteristics, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have become a potential material to manufacture effective gas sensors. Our present work deals with the study of interaction of a pristine graphene quantum dot (GQD) and a pyridinic nitrogen-doped defective graphene quantum dot (4N-GQD) with various toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), methane (CH 4 ), and carbon monoxide (CO). The 4N-GQD system has revealed strong interaction with these toxic gases in comparison to their pristine counterpart, which is because of the formation of an active region due to charge accumulation at the nitrogen-doped site. The adsorbate–adsorbent interaction in these systems has been studied at the molecular level employing density functional theory (DFT). Our findings suggest that the 4N-GQD system would be an effective adsorbent for a variety of toxic gases. These findings will help to steer the development of gas sensors with desirable features.

Abstract:Special binding sites in graphene are beneficial for near-surface interaction. These binding sites, which are supplied by single-atom catalysts, change the electronic characteristics of graphene and its derivatives, greatly expanding its potential use as gas sensors. Iron–nitrogen–carbon is reflected as one of the most effective substitutes for platinum in oxygen reduction reactions. The selection for carbon-enclosed FeN4 moieties, which serve as catalytically active centers, is among the top priorities. Current research focuses heavily on carbon-enclosed FeN4 moieties from a gas sensing perspective. In the present work, transition metal atom iron supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (FeN/G) was analyzed by density functional theory. The effect of gas adsorption on the structural and electronic properties was investigated with adsorption energy, charge transfer, work function, and band structure. The results indicate the chemisorption nature of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with strong adsorption energies of − 1.641 eV, − 2.081 eV, and − 1.345 eV. They induced spin polarization when adsorbed on the graphene support, which drastically modulated the electronic characteristics of the substrate. While other gas molecules of carbon dioxide, hydrogen disulfide, and ammonia (CO2, H2S, and NH3) with adsorption energies of − 0.154 eV, − 0.371 eV, and − 0.460 eV were physisorbed and served as electron donors, sulfur dioxide (SO2) exhibited weak chemisorption at a value of − 0.620 eV. Nitrogen-containing gas molecules of NO, NO2, and NH3 showed band gap shortening with increasing conductivity as compared to bare iron embedded graphene supported structure. Based on the investigation, the structure has potential application for the detection of NO and NO2 and other gases.

Abstract:As industrialization progresses, numerous harmful gases are released into the atmosphere. However, detecting these gases at low concentrations poses a significant challenge. Consequently, there is an urgent need to create advanced toxic gas sensors that can effectively identify and measure these substances. The utilization of two-dimensional materials offers promising opportunities for gas sensors due to their notable benefits, including substantial distinctive electronic properties and specific surface area. In this research, a single layer of hexagonal boron phosphide (h-BP) was employed as the substrate material. Using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, the researchers investigated how ambient toxic gases, namely CO, SO 2 , HCN, and CS 2 , are absorbed on the surface of monolayers of h-BP. The findings indicate that interaction between h-BP and these gases is characterized by physical adsorption. The researchers conducted calculations on four ideal adsorption structures to assess the Bader charge, density of states (DOS), work function, and recovery time. The results revealed notable alterations in electronic features and work function of the h-BP monolayer when it was exposed to SO 2 , indicating substantial modifications in electrical signals while detecting gas. Findings of this investigation demonstrate that h-BP monolayer exhibits enhanced sensitivity and selectivity towards the hazardous gas SO 2 .

Consequently, researchers in this modern scientific era have shown keen interest in the selective detection of these toxic gases. The development of fast, economical, selective, and highly sensitive gas sensors has become a crucial pursuit to accurately detect toxic gases and mitigate their adverse effects on the natural environment. Graphene-based nanocomposites have emerged as promising candidates for selectively detecting toxic gases due to their extensive surface area. This review paper provides a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in graphene-based gas sensors. The paper also offers an overview of various synthetic strategies for graphene and its hybrid architectures. Additionally, it delves into the detailed sensing applications of these materials. Challenges and limitations in this field have been critically evaluated and highlighted, along with potential future solutions.

Abstract:In the present study, Cobalt (Co) and Manganese (Mn) doped Boron Nitride nanosheet (BNNS) has been designed for density functional theory calculation. The variation in structural, electronic, and optical properties of BNNS due to Co and Mn doping has been studied along with the gas sensing ability of the designed nanosheets towards CH 4 , H 2 S, NH 3 , O 3 , PH 3 , and SO 2 hazardous gases. Co and Mn doping in the BNNS result in an insulator-to-conductor and insulator-to-semiconductor transition, respectively. Co and Mn-doped BNNS show a stronger interaction with the selected gases resulting in high adsorption energy. The designed sheets show the strongest interaction with the O 3 molecule resulting in a very high recovery time. Though doping results in significant structural deformation of the BNNS, a slight variation in bond length is observed due to gas adsorption. BNNS demonstrate a substantial drop in the band gap due to O 3 and SO 2 adsorption. In other cases, significant variations in the band gap of all the designed sheets are observed after gas adsorption. All the structures show a very high absorption coefficient of 10 5 cm −1 order which shows a slight peak shifting due to the interaction with toxic gases.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the potential of 2D materials, particularly graphene and its derivatives, for eco-friendly electricity generation and air pollution reduction. Leveraging the significant surface area of graphene nanomaterials, the susceptibility of these graphene-based nanostructures to hazardous substances and their applicability in clean solar cell (SSC) devices were systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT), as implemented within Gaussian 5.0 code. Time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) was employed to characterize the UV-visible spectrum of unstrained nanostructures. Herein, we considered three potentially harmful gases—CO, NH3, and Br2. Adsorption calculations revealed a notable interaction between the pure graphene nanostructure and Br2 gas, while the S-doped counterpart exhibited reduced interaction. Saturated S-doped nanostructures demonstrated an enhanced affinity for NH3 and CO gases compared to their pure S-doped counterparts, attributed to the sulfur (S) atom facilitating gas molecule binding to the nanostructure's surface. Furthermore, simulations of the SSC device architecture indicated the superior performance of the pure graphene nanostructure in terms of light-harvesting efficiency, injection energy, and electron injection into the lower conduction band of CBM titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). These findings suggest a potential avenue for developing nanostructures tailored for SSC devices and gas sensors, offering a dual solution to address air pollution concerns.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials show great application potentials in gas sensor due to its high surface-to-volume ratio. In this regard, we investigate the adsorption energies of five gases: NH3, NO, NO2, H2S, and SO2, on borophene, with the help of the density functional theory (DFT). The results show the high adsorption capacity of borophene, but gas adsorption can lead to its structural instability with the greatest influence of nitrogen. However, the heterostructure of borophene and graphene (B/G) can inhibit the deformation and optimize the adsorption capacity of borophene. In order to enhance the adsorption of gas molecules on B/G, lithium is doped in the borophene layer, and it shows that the adsorption of sulfur gas can be significantly enhanced. In addition, the transport properties of Li-decorated B/G inhibitors are simulated by non-equilibrium Green’s function method. The graphene composite and Li doping are found to have a great impact on the gas-sensitive properties of borophene, which provides new ideas for the application of borophene in sensors.

Abstract:We report an investigation on the adsorption of small gas molecules (O-2, CO, NO2 and NH3) on pristine and various transition metal embedded graphene samples using a first-principles approach based on density-functional theory (DFT). The most stable adsorption geometry, energy, charge transfer, and magnetic moment of these molecules on graphene embedded with different transition metal elements are thoroughly discussed. Our calculations found that embedded transition metal elements in general can significantly enhance the interactions between gas molecules and graphene, and for applications of graphene-based catalysis, Ti and Au may be the best choices among all transition metal elements. We also expect a detailed analysis of the electronic structures and magnetic properties of these systems to shed light on future applications of graphene-based gas sensing and spintronics.
Two-dimensional Cu-doped G/h-BN/G heterostructures for highly sensitive gas detection: an ab initio study

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials like graphene and h-BN have drawn significant interest for gas sensing applications due to their high surface-to-volume ratio and exceptional physical properties. This study introduces a novel approach involving a 2-D G/h-BN/G heterostructure doped with a Cu atom to develop a highly sensitive gas sensor. The intermediate h-BN layers support the Cu dopant and enhance the electrical sensitivity by constraining the offset current. Density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function formalisms are employed to investigate the geometry, stability, and electrical properties of the G/h-BN/G structure with the Cu dopant at various vacancy sites, alongside exploring the adsorption behavior of six different gas molecules (NO2, CO, NH3, PH3, HCN, and HO2). Results reveal that doping Cu in the B vacancy and the Stone-Wales defect yields highly stable structures with promising electrical characteristics for gas sensing applications. Gas molecules exhibit a higher tendency to adsorb onto the Cu-doped structure compared to the pristine G/h-BN/G, demonstrating a stronger impact on current flow. The Cu-doped structures display robust electrical sensitivity toward NO2, CO, NH3, and HCN molecules, and the significant gap in current modulation for each gas indicates the potential for distinguishing different gas molecules. Hence, incorporating the Cu dopant in the G/h-BN/G heterostructures emerges as a promising platform for gas sensing applications.
Adsorption of Gas Molecules on Graphene Nanoribbons and Its Implication for Nanoscale Molecule Sensor

Abstract:We have studied the adsorption of gas molecules (CO, NO, NO2, O-2, N-2, CO2, and NH3) on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using first principles methods. The adsorption geometries, adsorption energies, charge transfer, and electronic band structures are obtained. We find that the electronic and transport properties of the GNR with an-nchair-shaped edges are sensitive to the adsorption of NH3, and the system exhibits n-type semiconducting behavior after NH3 adsorption. Other gas molecules have little effect on modifying the conductance of GNRs. Quantum transport calculations further indicate that NH3 molecules can be detected out of these gas molecules by the GNR-based sensor.

Abstract:Gas sensing technology has a broad impact on society, ranging from environmental and industrial safety to healthcare and everyday applications, contributing to a safer, healthier, and more sustainable world. We studied pure and Fe-decorated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) gas sensor for monitoring of carbon-based gases using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations utilized the Generalized Gradient Approximation with the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) exchange-correlation functional. The novelty of our study lies in the investigation of the adsorption of harmful gases such as carbonyl sulfide, carbinol, carbimide, and carbonyl fluoride on both pure and Fe-decorated h-BN. The deviation in structural, electronic, and adsorption properties of h-BN due to Fe decoration has been studied along with the sensing ability to design said material towards carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbinol, (CH 4 O), carbimide (CH 2 N 2 ), and carbonyl fluoride (CF 2 O) gases. Gases such as CO, COS, CH 2 N 2 , and CF 2 O exhibited chemisorption, while CO 2 , and CH 4 O exhibited physisorption behavior. The introduction of Fe altered the semiconductor properties of h-BN and rendered it metallic. Enhanced electronic properties were observed due to a robust hybridization occurring between the d-orbitals of Fe-decorated BN and the gas molecules. The extended recovery periods observed for gases, aside from CO 2 , indicate their adhesive interactions with Fe-decorated h-BN. The reduction in desorption duration as temperature rises allows Fe-decorated h-BN to function as a reversible gas sensor. This research opens up a novel pathway for the synthesis and advancement of cost-effective, environmentally friendly double-atom catalysts with high sensitivity for capturing and detecting molecules such as CO, COS, CH 2 N 2 , CO 2 , CH 4 O, and CF 2 O.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping is an efficient way to modify the chemical and electronic properties of graphene. In particular, boron doping is expected to induce a p-type (boron)-conducting behavior to pristine (nondoped) graphene, which could lead to diverse applications. However, the experimental progress on atomic scale visualization and sensing properties of large-area boron-doped graphene (BG) sheets is still very scarce. This work describes the controlled growth of centimeter size, high-crystallinity BG sheets. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are used to visualize the atomic structure and the local density of states around boron dopants. It is confirmed that BG behaves as a p-type conductor and a unique croissant-like feature is frequently observed within the BG lattice, which is caused by the presence of boron-carbon trimers embedded within the hexagonal lattice. More interestingly, it is demonstrated for the first time that BG exhibits unique sensing capabilities when detecting toxic gases, such as NO2 and NH3, being able to detect extremely low concentrations (e.g., parts per trillion, parts per billion). This work envisions that other attractive applications could now be explored based on as-synthesized BG.

Abstract:Based on micro-nano sensing technology, the structural and electronic characteristics of metal-doped boron nitride monolayer are investigated by first principles. The existing nano sensors have practical problems, such as no selectivity, too strong adsorption capacity to be recycled, too weak adsorption capacity to obtain sufficient response. We explore the use of a highly sensitive recyclable nano sensor that is best suited for sensing function. Gas adsorption properties for the toxic decomposition gases of C4F7 N are further developed. We select the N-vacancy with the highest binding energies, which are −6.34 eV when doped by Co atom. The strong interaction and suitable adsorption energy between the activated atoms of adsorbent and gases prove their unique adsorption properties. Since no new chemical bonds are formed, it is obvious that systems are in the form of physical adsorption, which proves their ideal desorption properties. In addition, the conductivity increases to different degrees due to the redistribution of electrons, which proves excellent selectivity. Hence, we propose the use of Co-BNN nanomaterial for the detection of C4F7N toxic decomposition gases. Results would serve as instructive reference for the investigation of resistive gas-sensitive sensors.

Abstract:The need for highly sensitive toxic gas sensors is significant, and achieving this sensitivity is possible. Researchers have utilized density functional theory (DFT) computations to examine adsorption of different gas molecules (COX 2 , where X is F, Cl, or Br) over Au-doped and pristine graphene. This investigation aims to determine possibility of employing Au-doped graphene as a basis for gas sensors. Multiple adsorption positions and orientations were examined for each gas molecule. The configuration that exhibited the highest stability was identified, and adsorption energy (E ads ) values, considering van der Waals (vdW) interactions, have been computed using NCI analyses. In addition, the electronic properties, including LUMO-HOMO orbital density and charge transfer, were analyzed to acquire a deeper understanding of process by which adsorption occurs. Findings indicated that gas molecules under investigation exhibited weak adsorption on pristine graphene, with low E ads values. In contrast, E ads values of every gas molecule on Au-doped graphene displayed varying degrees of increase. Notably, COX 2 exhibited a high sensitivity to Au-doped graphene. Furthermore, in the effect of doping Au into graphene, the E ads absorption of COCl 2 gas has increased from 0.155 to 1.028 eV. This indicates the strong tendency of Au-doped graphene to interact with gas COCl 2 compared to two other COX 2 gas species. This strong adsorption can be ascribed to significant substantial charge transfer (CT) between COCl 2 and Au-doped graphene and orbital hybridization. The charge transfer amount of the doped states has increased by more than double compared to the pure state. The band gap of Au-doped graphene has decreased from 2.14 to 1.83 eV due to the absorption of gas COCl 2 , indicating the highest amount of reduction compared to other gases. Moreover, the enhanced electrical conductivity of Au-doped graphene renders it more valuable and sensitive in the context of sensing COX 2 gases.

Using the first-principles calculations combined with density functional theory (DFT), the authors in this research work have explored the adsorption energy and electronic features of co-doped armchair graphene nanoribbon (ArGNR) and its derivatives, such as the co-doped armchair graphene oxide nanoribbon (ArGONR) and co-doped armchair reduced graphene oxide nanoribbon (ArRGONR) with boron and phosphorus (BP) atoms. A comparative study of detection of toxic carbon based gases (CO, CO2, CH4) on co-doped graphene nanoribbon (BP-ArGNR), and its derivatives such as BP-ArGONR (addition of more oxygen atoms in pristine ArGNR) and BP-ArRGONR (addition of less oxygen atoms in pristine ArGNR) has been performed. To evaluate the sensing of carbon based gases, their adsorption energies, binding distances, charge transfer, band structures and density of states have been studied for different variants. Before modification, adsorption energies for BP-ArGNR have been found to be smaller than the BP-ArGONR for CO, CO2 and CH4 molecules, thereby showing physisorption mechanism. Our computational results also revealed that after modification with oxygen atoms, BP-ArGONR shows relatively more negative value of adsorption energy in comparison to the pristine ArGNR (PR-ArGNR) for CO, CO2 and CH4 molecules, thereby showing chemisorption phenomenon. Band structure analysis predicts large band gap variations for BP-ArGONR as compared to PR-ArGNR. Thus, the authors concluded that after modification of graphene surface, enormous changes are observed in adsorption energies and band gap for BP-ArGONR towards all carbon based gases under study and hence significantly enhance the sensing performance of pristine graphene.

Abstract:Phosgene (COCl 2 ) gas poses environmental and health hazards, causing air pollution and severe respiratory issues, highlighting its dangerous impact and emphasizing the need for effective adsorbents. Herein, graphene/boron nitride and aluminum/boron nitride heterostructure doped with Zinc (Zn) and further decorated with Oxygen (O) and Boron (B) atoms were explored as potential sensor devices for phosgene adsorption and detection within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) computation at the d3bj-B3LYP/def2svp level of theory. Complexed with COCl 2 , energy gaps further decreased, demonstrating sensitivity. The pristine GP_Al (−6.94 eV) and GP_BN (−11.65 eV) surface were seen with higher values for adsorption energies in comparison to the decorated counterparts; GP_AlN_ Dop Zn Dec B (−5.62 eV), GP_AlN_ Dop Zn Dec O (−5.91 eV), GP_BN_ Dop Zn Dec B (−7.96 eV), and GP_BN_ Dop Zn Dec O (−2.15 eV) respectively, suggesting that the pristine heterostructures could adsorb effectively the phosgene gas molecule. The adsorption energy of phosgene molecules onto heterostructures, however, falls within a range that does not significantly hinder surface recovery. This characteristic translates to shorter recovery times, rendering it suitable for the detection of phosgene molecules. These results may pave the way for the development of effective adsorbents for environmental and health protection.

First Principles Investigation of Gas Adsorption on Bilayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides for Sensing Toxic Gases

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides have shown great promise in the field of gas sensing due to their high catalytic activity and unique electronic properties. They can effectively interact with various gas molecules, making them suitable materials for high performance gas sensors. In this work, we have studied the sensing properties of nitrogen containing gases on different heterostructures using density functional studies. The result shows that NH3 and NOx exhibit weak electronic interactions with MoS/WTe and MoTe/WS heterostructures and strong electronic interactions are observed between NH3 and NOx molecules with MoS/IrO and MoS/TiO heterostructures.

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of toxic gas molecules (NO, CO, NO2, and NH3) on graphene-like BC3 are investigated using first-principle density functional theory (DFT). The most stable adsorption configurations, adsorption energies,binding distances,charge transfers,electronic band structures,and the conductance modulations are calculated to deeply understand the impacts of the molecules above on the electronic and transport properties of the BC3 monolayer. The graphene-like BC3 monolayer is a semiconductor with a band gap of 0.733 eV. The semi-metal graphene has a low sensitivity to the abovementioned molecules. However, it is discovered that all the above gas molecules are chemically adsorbed on the BC3 sheet with the adsorption energies less than -1 eV. The NO2 gas molecule is totally dissociated into NO and O species through the adsorption process, while the other gas molecules retain their molecular forms. The amounts of charge transfer upon adsorption of CO and NH3 gas molecules on BC3 are found to be small. Hence, the band gap changes in BC3 as a result of interactions with CO and NH3 are only 4.63% and 16.7%, indicating that the BC3-based sensor has a low and moderate sensitivity to CO and NH3, respectively. Contrariwise, upon adsorption of NO or NO2 on BC3, a significant charge is transferred from the molecules to the BC3 sheet, causing a semiconductor-metal transition. It is found that the BC3-based sensor has high potential for NO detection due to the significant conductance changes, moderate adsorption energy, and short recovery time. More excitingly, the BC3 is a likely catalyst for dissociation of the NO2 gas molecule. Our findings divulge promising potential of the graphene-like BC3 as a highly sensitive molecular sensor for NO and NH3 detection and a catalyst for NO2 dissociation
