Abstract:Brain-computer interface establishes a direct communication pathway between the human brain and the external world by realtime decoding the brain activities accompanying our thinking process.In the past two decades,rapid progress has been made in this field,with a series of important research and application results.The article reviews the state-of-art research in three main directions,namely communication and control,function rehabilitation and enhancement,status recognition and monitoring.Finally,opportunities and challenges for future development are discussed.

Abstract:Brain–computer interfaces are a new technology that could help to restore useful function to people severely disabled by a wide variety of devastating neuromuscular disorders and to enhance functions in healthy individuals. The first demonstrations of brain–computer interface (BCI) technology occurred in the 1960s when GreyWalter used the scalp-recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) to control a slide projector in 1964 [1] and when Eberhard Fetz taught monkeys to control a meter needle (and thereby earn food rewards) by changing the firing rate of a single cortical neuron [2, 3]. In the 1970s, Jacques Vidal developed a system that used the scalp-recorded visual evoked potential (VEP) over the visual cortex to determine the eye-gaze direction (i.e., the visual fixation point) in humans, and thus to determine the direction in which a person wanted to move a computer cursor [4, 5]. At that time, Vidal coined the term “brain–computer interface.” Since then and into the early 1990s, BCI research studies continued to appear only every few years. Abstract:The idea of interfacing minds with machines has long captured the human imagination. Recent advances in neuroscience and engineering are making this a reality, opening the door to restoring and potentially augmenting human physical and mental capabilities. Medical applications such as cochlear implants for the deaf and deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease are becoming increasingly commonplace. Abstract:Neural interface (NI) systems hold the potential to return lost functions to persons with paralysis. Impressive progress has been made, including evaluation of neural control signals, sensor testing in humans, signal decoding advances, and proof-of-concept validation. Most importantly, the field has demonstrated that persons with paralysis can use prototype systems for spelling, "point and click," and robot control. Human and animal NI research is advancing knowledge about neural information processing and plasticity in healthy, diseased, and injured nervous systems. This emerging field promises a range of neurotechnologies able to return communication, independence, and control to people with movement limitations.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces allow the exchange of data between the brain and an external device, bypassing the muscular system. Clinical studies of invasive brain-computer interface technologies have been conducted for over 20 years. During this time, there has been a continuous improvement of approaches to neuronal signal processing in order to improve the quality of control of external devices. Currently, brain-computer interfaces with intracortical implants allow completely paralyzed patients to control robotic limbs for self-service, use a computer or a tablet, type text, and reproduce speech at an optimal speed. Studies of invasive brain-computer interfaces regularly provide new fundamental data on functioning of the central nervous system. In recent years, breakthrough discoveries and achievements have been annually made in this sphere. This review analyzes the results of clinical experiments of brain-computer interfaces with intracortical implants, provides information on the stages of this technology development, its main discoveries and achievements.

Abstract:Over the past decade, many laboratories have begun to explore brain-computer interface (BCI) technology as a radically new communication option for those with neuromuscular impairments that prevent them from using conventional augmentative communication methods. BCI's provide these users with communication channels that do not depend on peripheral nerves and muscles. This article summarizes the first international meeting devoted to BCI research and development. Current BCI's use electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded at the scalp or single-unit activity recorded from within cortex to control cursor movement, select letters or icons, or operate a neuroprosthesis. The central element in each BCI is a translation algorithm that converts electrophysiological input from the user into output that controls external devices. BCI operation depends on effective interaction between two adaptive controllers, the user who encodes his or her commands in the electrophysiological input provided to the BCI, and the BCI which recognizes the commands contained in the input and expresses them in device control. Current BCI's have maximum information transfer rates of 5-25 b/min. Achievement of greater speed and accuracy depends on improvements in signal processing, translation algorithms, and user training. These improvements depend on increased interdisciplinary cooperation between neuroscientists, engineers, computer programmers, psychologists, and rehabilitation specialists, and on adoption and widespread application of objective methods for evaluating alternative methods. The practical use of BCI technology depends on the development of appropriate applications, identification of appropriate user groups, and careful attention to the needs and desires of individual users. BCI research and development will also benefit from greater emphasis on peer-reviewed publications, and from adoption of standard venues for presentations and discussion.

Abstract:Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), a remarkable technological advancement in neurology and neurosurgery, mark a significant leap since the inception of electroencephalography (EEG) in 1924. These interfaces effectively convert central nervous system signals into commands for external devices, offering revolutionary benefits to patients with severe communication and motor impairments due to a myriad of neurological conditions like stroke, spinal cord injuries, and neurodegenerative disorders. BCIs enable these individuals to communicate and interact with their environment, using their brain signals to operate interfaces for communication and environmental control. This technology is especially crucial for those completely locked in, providing a communication lifeline where other methods fall short. The advantages of BCIs are profound, offering autonomy and an improved quality of life for patients with severe disabilities. They allow for direct interaction with various devices and prostheses, bypassing damaged or non-functional neural pathways. However, challenges persist, including the complexity of accurately interpreting brain signals, the need for individual calibration, and ensuring reliable, long-term use. Additionally, ethical considerations arise regarding autonomy, consent, and the potential for dependence on technology. Despite these challenges, BCIs represent a transformative development in neurotechnology, promising enhanced patient outcomes and a deeper understanding of brain-machine interfaces.

Abstract:One innovation currently influencing physical medicine and rehabilitation is brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. BCI systems used for motor control record neural activity associated with thoughts, perceptions, and motor intent; decode brain signals into commands for output devices; and perform the user's intended action through an output device. BCI systems used for sensory augmentation transduce environmental stimuli into neural signals interpretable by the central nervous system. Both types of systems have potential for reducing disability by facilitating a user's interaction with the environment. Investigational BCI systems are being used in the rehabilitation setting both as neuroprostheses to replace lost function and as potential plasticity-enhancing therapy tools aimed at accelerating neurorecovery. Populations benefitting from motor and somatosensory BCI systems include those with spinal cord injury, motor neuron disease, limb amputation, and stroke. This article discusses the basic components of BCI for rehabilitation, including recording systems and locations, signal processing and translation algorithms, and external devices controlled through BCI commands. An overview of applications in motor and sensory restoration is provided, along with ethical questions and user perspectives regarding BCI technology.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface is a direct communication channel between the brain and external devices. Its signals come from the central nervous system, and its transmission is independent of the peripheral nervous and muscular systems. Brain-computer interface commonly used to assist, enhance, and repair human-motor sensations. Through the classification and recognition of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, the monitoring and rehabilitation of some neurological and psychological diseases can be realized. Brain-computer interfaces are currently in their infancy and are being explored. Non-invasive brain-computer interfaces refer to brain-computer interfaces that are performed in the cerebral cortex. Semi-invasive brain-computer interfaces are what the chip penetrates the cerebral cortex but does not penetrate the gray matter in the brain. An immersive brain-computer interface is when the chip penetrates the gray matter of the brain. At present, Brain-computer interfaces with chips implanted in the head are mainly located in the brain. Brain-computer interfaces located in the cerebellum, brainstem and other parts have not made significant breakthroughs. The brain-computer interface first collects signals transmitted by the brain, then sequences and encodes them . Finally, transfer them to the computer. The computer controls the robotic arm through the acquired signals and finally completes the instructions. This article focuses on invasive and semi-invasive brain-computer interfaces, using case studies, combinatorial studies, and other methods. This research can help patients live better, improve patients' quality of life, and promote future research in bioelectronics and organic electronics.

Abstract:Advancements in understanding brain function combined with technology have unleashed enormous benefits to the disabled and even able-bodied persons. The evolution of utilizing brain signals to communicate with or control various computerized devices has proven to be effective in the world of medicine as well as other industries such as gaming, robotics, military, and work environments. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) represent a cutting-edge technology enabling machine control through thought. Though most wearable devices employ EEG-based technologies, current research is going into a method known as fNRIS. However, despite proven advantages, challenges are yet to be resolved. Costs, extensive training requirements, exposure to potential cyberattacks, security, and privacy issues are being researched. However, greater study in each area is required to fully realize the vast benefits of this combination of science and technology but with consideration to lowering related risks. This paper discusses what we currently know and the potential of this knowledge but also exposes what we don’t know, encouraging more extensive study and testing.

Abstract:As the proliferation of technology dramatically infiltrates all aspects of modern life, in many ways the world is becoming so dynamic and complex that technological capabilities are overwhelming human capabilities to optimally interact with and leverage those technologies. Fortunately, these technological advancements have also driven an explosion of neuroscience research over the past several decades, presenting engineers with a remarkable opportunity to design and develop flexible and adaptive brain-based neurotechnologies that integrate with and capitalize on human capabilities and limitations to improve human-system interactions. Major forerunners of this conception are brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which to this point have been largely focused on improving the quality of life for particular clinical populations and include, for example, applications for advanced communications with paralyzed or locked in patients as well as the direct control of prostheses and wheelchairs. Near-term applications are envisioned that are primarily task oriented and are targeted to avoid the most difficult obstacles to development. In the farther term, a holistic approach to BCIs will enable a broad range of task-oriented and opportunistic applications by leveraging pervasive technologies and advanced analytical approaches to sense and merge critical brain, behavioral, task, and environmental information. Communications and other applications that are envisioned to be broadly impacted by BCIs are highlighted; however, these represent just a small sample of the potential of these technologies.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a term used to describe systems that translate biological information into commands that can control external devices such as computers, prosthetics, and other machinery. While BCI is used in military applications, home control systems, and a wide array of entertainment, much of its modern interest and funding can be attributed to its utility in the medical community, where it has rapidly propelled advancements in the restoration or replacement of critical functions robbed from victims of disease, stroke, and traumatic injury. BCI devices can allow patients to move prosthetic limbs, operate devices such as wheelchairs or computers, and communicate through writing and speech-generating devices. In this article, we aim to provide an introductory summary of the historical context and modern growing utility of BCI, with specific interest in igniting the conversation of where and how the neurodiagnostics community and its associated parties can embrace and contribute to the world of BCI.

Abstract:The paper provides a comprehensive exploration of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and their application in addressing communication and control challenges in neurological disorders like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), locked-in syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, and Spinal Cord Injury. It traces BCI advancements from foundational information theory principles to their current state. Neurological disorders severely impact communication and control abilities, with ALS causing muscle weakness and paralysis, and locked-in syndrome confining individuals within paralyzed bodies while maintaining cognitive functions. BCIs decode brain signals, enabling control of external devices like computers, offering hope for restoring communication and control in affected individuals. Employing data analysis and visualization techniques, this study evaluates BCI performance in improving communication and control across various disorders. Matplotlib generates informative graphs and performance metrics, quantifying BCI efficacy for users with differing motor impairments. The findings highlight BCI transformative potential, guiding clinicians and researchers toward personalized solutions for diverse patient populations. Abstract:During the last few years, intensive research efforts are being done in the field of brain interfaces to extract neuro-information from the signals representing neuronal activities in the human brain. Recent development of brain-to-computer interfaces support direct communication between animals' brains, enabling direct brain-to-brain communication. Although these results are based on binary communication with relaxed requirements of latency and throughput, the fast development in neuro-science technologies indicates potential new scenarios for wireless communications between brains. In this paper we highlight technologies that are being used today to enable brain-to-brain communication and propose potential wireless communication architectures and requirements for future scenarios.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a technical insight into recent developments in brain‐computer interface (BCI) technology and its applications. Design/methodology/approach Following an introduction to BCI, this paper considers the different means of detecting brain waves and then discusses a number of BCI development programmes and applications. Findings Invasive, partially invasive and non‐invasive BCI techniques are the topic of extensive study and aim to allow the control of external devices by human thought. Invasive BCIs are being applied to patients suffering paralysis and requiring cranial surgery and aim to restore movement or impart other functions such as the operation of robotic arms or communication. Wireless invasive microelectrode arrays are under development. Of the non‐invasive techniques, electroencephalography is attracting the greatest interest and is being applied to a range of military and healthcare uses. Originality/value This paper provides an introduction to BCI technology and a review of recent research and a number of key applications.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), invasive or non-invasive, have projected unparalleled vision and promise for assisting patients in need to better their interaction with the surroundings. Inspired by the BCI-based rehabilitation technologies for nerve-system impairments and amputation, we propose an electromagnetic brain-computer-metasurface (EBCM) paradigm, regulated by human's cognition by brain signals directly and non-invasively. We experimentally show that our EBCM platform can translate human's mind from evoked potentials of P300-based electroencephalography to digital coding information in the electromagnetic domain non-invasively, which can be further processed and transported by an information metasurface in automated and wireless fashions. Directly wireless communications of the human minds are performed between two EBCM operators with accurate text transmissions. Moreover, several other proof-of-concept mind-control schemes are presented using the same EBCM platform, exhibiting flexibly-customized capabilities of information processing and synthesis like visual-beam scanning, wave modulations, and pattern encoding.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology that acquires and analyzes electrical signals from the brain to control external devices. BCI technologies can generally be used to control a computer cursor, limb orthosis, or word processing. This technology can also be used as a neurological rehabilitation tool for people with poor motor control. We reviewed historical attempts and methods toward predicting arm movements using brain waves. In addition, representative studies of minimally invasive and noninvasive BCI were summarized.
