Cooperation Is Rewarding If the Boundary Conditions Fit: Interdisciplinary Cooperation in the Context of Prenatal Diagnostics

Abstract:In Germany, pregnant women have a legal right to psychosocial care in the context of prenatal diagnostics (PND); however, this is not widely known and only a few women take advantage of it. In an attempt to improve the situation, various model projects have been implemented in recent years to promote cooperation between medical and psychosocial professional groups. The Institute of Psychosomatic Cooperation Research and Family Therapy at the University Hospital Heidelberg was previously responsible for conducting the accompanying research in two model projects and is currently conducting a third. This paper summarizes results from approximately 10 years of continuous research in this area. The focus here is on the aspects of collaboration between the professional groups involved within the context of PND. On the whole, there have been definite advances with regard to the criteria for care, interdisciplinary cooperation, continuing education and advanced training in the context of PND as well as school projects and outreach work, but development in this field is moving rather slowly. We concur that, as previously recommended by professionals and politicians, it is time to coordinate information and care for pregnant women and their partners.
