Abstract:The jailing of two Reuters’ journalists in Myanmar in December 2017 for reporting on the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhaine state had a major impact on international perceptions of press freedom in Myanmar. The hope that greeted the National League for Democracy’s landslide victory in 2015 evaporated as the party’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi refused to condemn atrocities against the Rohingya and the harassment of journalists reporting on human rights abuses. Drawing on fieldwork interviews with over 50 Yangon-based journalists, editors and media trainers, this chapter analyzes the obstacles to achieving greater media freedom in Myanmar. In particular, ethno-religious nationalism, political polarization, journalistic self-censorship and the prevalence of social media as an information source are identified as key factors blighting journalistic freedom in Myanmar.
