Abstract:Encouraging children to read frequently and helping them to develop their reading skills as effectively as possible can be a challenge for some primary schools. This research questions whether the use of a game-based intervention can integrate into the existing teaching culture to aid volunteer teaching assistants in achieving a more significant impact on pupil reading development. A prototype based on the initial process of requirements gathering is presented using Multimedia Fusion Developer 2. The design incorporates a game-like exercise where a foam volcano character releases bubbles containing letters and words. Pupils must read these aloud in order to burst them open, which is recorded as a metric of reading ability.
Phonological strategies and peer scaffolding in digital literacy game-playing sessions in a Finnish pre-primary class

Abstract:This study explored what kinds of phonological strategies are used by children and how they scaffold each other while they solve tasks in a digital literacy game. The theoretical basis of this study lies in Vygotsky's thoughts on the role of social interaction in learning and in the concept of peer scaffolding. The data included eight videotaped game-playing sessions conducted in small groups in a Finnish pre-primary class with six-year-old children. The analysis was carried out in two phases. Based on a qualitative content analysis of peer-scaffolding episodes (N = 363), it was found that the Finnish-speaking children used several types of phonological strategies, such as the syllabification of words, phonological processing and the production of letter names in solving word- and syllable-level game tasks. Furthermore, a microgenetic analysis of the episodes showed that the six-year-olds displayed emerging peer-scaffolding patterns, such as initiation, responding, modelling and expanding. The results illustrate the pedagogical potential of digital literacy games in the context of social interaction and peer scaffolding.

Abstract:AbstractRestructuring and developing child’s conceptions and explanatory models about the nature science is a key issue for elementary education. This study evaluates an interactive game that makes use of specific instructional strategy to facilitate children’s learning of sound concept. By extracting image schemas which exist in children’s mental models of understanding sound concept and its scientific explanations, a tablet-based serious game was designed through expressing the analogies where these image schemas were used. The degree of children’s conceptual change was compared by implementing pre-, post- and delayed post-test. The results showed that children who had experienced the serious game more accurately answered relevant questions and explained sound concepts. Since conceptual change requires a long-term learning process, the main purpose of study is to help children quickly acquire a basic understanding of the science concept and enhance their learning motivation in kindergarten class.

Abstract:This study examines the significance of early literacy development in kindergarten students and explores the effectiveness of game-based teaching as a means to enhance literacy instruction. Game-based teaching, characterized by interactive and playful activities, has gained prominence, especially with the advent of digital games and educational apps. The research provides a historical and theoretical backdrop, recognizing the challenges and advantages of this approach, and delves into strategies for its successful implementation, emphasizing the pivotal role of educators. The study also highlights the potential for collaboration, independent learning, and the transference of skills acquired through gaming to real-world contexts. While acknowledging challenges such as technological access and teacher training, it offers strategies to overcome them, and underscores the need for adaptations to align with the unique needs of kindergarten students. This research underscores the role of game-based teaching in fostering early literacy skills, setting the stage for students' academic journeys.

Treating Children With Speech Sound Disorders: Development of a Tangible Artefact Prototype

Abstract:Background: A prototype of a tangible user interface (TUI) for a fishing game, which is intended to be used by children with speech sound disorders (SSD), speech and language therapists (SLTs), and kindergarten teachers and assistants (KTAs) and parents alike, has been developed and tested. Objective: The aim of this study was to answer the following question: How can TUIs be used as a tool to help in interventions for children with SSD? Methods: To obtain feedback and to ensure that the prototype was being developed according to the needs of the identified target users, an exploratory test was prepared and carried out. During this test using an ethnographic approach, an observation grid, a semistructured questionnaire, and interviews were used to gather data. A total of 4 different types of stakeholders (sample size of 10) tested the prototype: 2 SLTs, 2 KTAs, and 6 children. Results: The analysis of quantitative and qualitative data revealed that the prototype addresses the existing needs of SLTs and KTAs, and it revealed that 5 out of 6 (83%) children enjoyed the activity. Results also revealed a high replay value, with all children saying they would play more. Conclusions: Serious games and tangible interaction for learning and problem solving serve both teachers and children, as children enjoy playing, and, through a playful approach, learning is facilitated. A clear pattern was observed: Children enjoyed playing, and numerous valid indicators showed the transposition of the traditional game into the TUI artefact was successful. The game is varied and rich enough to be attractive and fun. There is a clear need and interest in similar objects from SLTs and educators. However, the process should be even more iterative, with a multidisciplinary team, and all end users should be able to participate as co-designers.

Abstract:Digital tools have long been used for supporting children's creativity. Digital games that allow children to create artifacts and express themselves in a playful environment serve as efficient Creativity Support Tools (or CSTs). Creativity is also scaffolded by social interactions with others in their environment. In our work, we explore the use of game-based interactions with a social agent to scaffold children's creative expression as game players. We designed three collaborative games and play-tested with 146 5-10 year old children played with the social robot Jibo, which affords three different kinds of creativity: verbal creativity, figural creativity and divergent thinking during creative problem solving. In this paper, we reflect on game mechanic practices that we incorporated to design for stimulating creativity in children. These strategies may be valuable to game designers and HCI researchers designing games and social agents for supporting children's creativity.

Abstract:This paper presents an augmented reality-based Chinese character composition game (ARC) that employs augmented papers to engage lower primary school students in collaborative Chinese character learning. A design research approach was used to gain a holistic view of designing, enacting, and evaluating the ARC. The participants included four teachers and five classes of students from two primary schools. The school-based research findings suggested that: 1) the ARC was an effective system for improving beginning learners' orthographic knowledge of Chinese characters, particularly for those students with low Chinese language proficiency; 2) the tangible paper interface engaged students in group work and increased the game playfulness; and 3) students' language proficiency had a significant effect on their perceptions of ease of use and usefulness of the augmented paper game. This paper not only substantiated the potential of the augmented paper as a carrier of educational content, but also instantiated how to implement it to promote social and cognitive supports for interaction and collaboration.

Abstract:This study explored the effects of literacy-rich sociodramatic guided play on kindergarten student literacy performance and behavior. Kindergarten students of varying socioeconomic status attending two elementary schools in the same school district participated in this repeated measures, counterbalanced design study. Students received the mandated grade-level literacy instruction with a supplemental 15 min block of time designated for play-based literacy integration during which the intervention took place. During this short time, students working in small groups were given materials (miniature items, toys, letter tiles) to practice initial letter sounds and consonant–vowel–consonant rhyming word families using either an assigned activity (control condition) or a student-invented game that practiced the same literacy concepts (experimental activity). Students instructed through the experimental condition scored significantly better on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment with a medium effect size. Additional positive academic results included practice in story-composing, sequencing ideas into a complex cause and effect chain of events; application of new vocabulary; repeated practice of phonics and phonemic awareness skills to new examples; self-regulation of emotions; communication and negotiation with peers; and imagination, fantasy, humor, and creativity. Students evidenced preference for the experimental condition, continuing to repeat their games during recess or free time and to record them in their journals. Examples of student-generated literacy games are provided.

Designing building blocks for open-ended early literacy software

Abstract:<p>English has a convoluted relationship between its pronunciation and spelling, which obscures its phonological structure for early literacy learners. This convoluted relationship has implications for early literacy software, particularly for open-ended, child-driven designs. A tempting way to bypass this issue is to use manipulables (blocks) that are directly tied to phonemes. However, creating phoneme-based blocks leads to two design challenges: (a) how to represent phonemes visually in a child-accessible way and (b) how to account for context-dependent spelling. In the present work, we approached these challenges by developing a set of animated, onomatopoeia-based mnemonic characters, one per phoneme, that can take the shape of different graphemes. We applied the characters to a construction-based literacy app to simplify independent word-building for literacy beginners. We tested the app during a 13-week-long period with 4- to 5-year-olds in kindergarten classrooms. Children showed visible interest in the characters and properly grasped the principles of their functioning. However, the blocks were not sufficient to scaffold independent word building, leading children to rely on other scaffolding mechanisms. To test the characters' efficiency as mnemonics, we evaluated their effect on the speed and accuracy of finding phonemes on a keyboard. The results suggest that there were both children who benefitted from the characters in this task and those who performed better without them. The factors that differentiated these two categories are currently unclear. To help further research on phonetic mnemonics in literacy learning software, we are making the characters available to the research community.</p>

Effect of Sing and Speak 4 Kids: An Online Music-Based Speech and Language Learning Game for Children in Early Intervention

Abstract:Music-based speech language interventions have shown promise to support young children with autism, other speech and language deficits, and Dual Language Learners (also known as DLL, English Language Learners, or ELL). Online edtech learning programs may produce greater positive outcomes for children by including parents as mediators of the intervention. This study measured the preliminary effectiveness of Sing and Speak 4 Kids (SS4Kids), a music-based online speech and language development game, administered to 26 children ages 2–6 years old with or at risk for a diagnosis of autism, other speech and language deficits or DLL. The children were trained in early intervention settings across 4–6 sessions over a 2-week period in one of three group conditions: (a) teacher only in clinic; (b) parent only at home; (c) both teacher + parent. Measurement of verbal production of target words in pre- and post-training sessions showed that trained words significantly improved from pre-test to post-test Additionally, there was no effect of different group conditions (teacher only vs. parent only vs. both teacher + parent) on children's performance. Results suggest that the SS4Kids program is an effective music-based speech and language training method for supporting target word production in young children across a two week timespan. Importantly, the results also found that group conditions did not influence the improvement, confirming effectiveness of both clinic and home-based parent mediation. During a time when traditional in-person intervention services may be restricted, the current work provides cautious but emerging evidence of the effectiveness of an online edtech evidence-based practice to support the speech and language outcomes for a variety of children in early intervention.

This paper designs a game-based prototype for preparing pre-service teachers to innovate teaching practices across disciplines. The simulation, Color Conquest, serves as a strategic game to encourage educators to reconsider their pedagogical practices. It allows teachers to use and develop various scenarios by customizing maps, giving students agency to engage in the complex decision-making process. Additionally, this engagement process provides teachers with an opportunity to develop students' skills in artificial intelligence literacy as students actively develop strategic thinking, problem-solving, and critical reasoning skills.

Abstract:Play is a well-documented educational tool, but one that has begun to decline in schools and early childhood education due to the increased pressure for cognitive-based school readiness programs. Play such as pretend play and video games engages children and helps them to develop literacies and competencies outside of the classroom. Additionally, play is a hands-on approach to curriculum that creates deeper understandings and relationships with the subject matter. In this article, two programs are highlighted that combine elements of play to foster these kinds of connections. In live action video games, aspects of video gaming and pretend play bring children into the world of the video game and teach them collaboration, resource management, and creative problem solving. In a strategy game that was designed to replace a book discussion, teens connected more deeply to the story by discussing their own responses, the structure of the narrative, and their feelings about the protagonist’s choices. These programs are an attempt to bring play back into learning to encourage the development of new competencies and foster a love of learning.

Abstract:Early instruction plays a crucial role in allowing toddlers to develop social, cognitive, and sensory-motor skills. Free play is important in any early development program, but designing activities for free play is challenging. In this paper, we investigate the use of an interactive surface, BendableSound, a fabric-based interactive surface that enables young children to play piano sounds when touching the fabric, and its potential value in early education classrooms. We conducted a 9-week exploratory study in which 22 toddlers and 5 teachers used BendableSound during free play activities inside their classroom. Our qualitative results indicate that BendableSound was successfully adopted and integrated in toddler classrooms and could positively impact cognitive, social, and physical development. These results offer implications for the design of deformable surfaces and for their integration in activities to support the early development of toddlers.

Abstract:Objective: Hearing impaired (HI) children face challenges in establishing and maintaining relationships with their hearing (H) peers, leading to potential damages on their psychological well-being. The objective of this study is to introduce and validate design strategies and interaction strategies aimed at promoting social interaction between HI children and their H peers. Materials and Methods: With a specific focus on addressing the unique needs of HI children, the design strategies and interaction strategies were derived from the previous studies. To assess the effectiveness, these strategies were implemented in a game specifically designed to encourage peer interaction between HI and H children. Participants, including both HI and H children, were invited to experience the game and provide feedback. Results: The results demonstrated the efficacy of these strategies in fostering the social interaction between HI and H children. Participants exhibited increased engagement and cooperation during gameplay, indicating the successful facilitation of peer interactions. Conclusions: By validating design and interaction strategies through a specially designed peer interaction game, the research demonstrates the effectiveness of these strategies. The findings underscore the significance of tailored strategies that address the unique challenges faced by HI children in establishing interactions with their H peers. These validated strategies can serve as a foundation for creating inclusive environments that support the overall well-being and social integration of HI children in mainstream settings.

Abstract:Sensitive period is when children quickly learn and build mindsets through experiences. This research aims to develop Smart Kiddo Games as an Effort to Improve Physical Motor and Language Ability in Early Childhood. This research is Research and Development using the approaching model developed by Borg & Gall. Starting with a preliminary study, planning, and game product development, continued to the product validation stage (game model) by two material expert validators and two game experts. Product validity analysis using the Aiken formula. Based on the results of the validity test of the assessment instrument by material experts and game experts, all showed results ≥ 0.05 (valid). Thus, it can be concluded that Smart Kiddo Games are appropriate for use in learning as an effort to improve the physical motoric and language abilities of early childhood. Furthermore, it is hoped that it can become one of the most effective and enjoyable early childhood learning strategies, according to the principles and stages of early childhood development.
Exploring the effects of using various designs of game-based materials on music learning

Abstract:<span>This paper explores and sheds light on how various designs of game-based learning materials benefit music education. The developed games followed Gordon's music skill learning sequence of discrimination, and aimed to teach listening and visual skills for the middle C octave. Two genres of game-based learning materials were proposed, one with most game design features and the other which excluded most game mechanisms but retained simple gamification features. A total of 34 elementary school students participated in the experiment and were separated into three groups to learn music with the game-based learning materials. The pros and cons of using various music game-based learning materials for learning performance and learning motivation are summarized. The findings suggest that teachers could adopt the simple version game as a course assisting tool to enable immediate game interaction with students in formal music classes, and the full version game could be provided to learners for after-class informal learning. Besides, the full version could be a trigger for advanced learners to challenge themselves, whereas the simple version would be good for novice learners to acquire the targeted music content more smoothly.</span>

Abstract:Over an extended period, spelling lessons have consistently played a crucial role in language acquisition, commonly integrated into educational settings to enhance learners' spelling proficiency. Traditional classroom environments often require learners to spell and write words, leading those facing persistent difficulties to experience anxiety and social disconnection. This challenge is particularly notable in preschool settings where a more interactive approach to spelling sessions could benefit children with difficulties. This research develops a screenless language learning system for spelling acquisition, specifically focusing on minimizing digital screen exposure for preschoolers. The proposed virtual, augmented interface connects with tangible elements and game features. The tangible interface becomes the primary tool for learning, and the system achieves complete accuracy without necessitating learners to hold additional digital devices. The proposed system integrates augmented reality, tangible user interfaces, and serious game-based learning. Utilizing 3D Unity and Vuforia technology, augmented reality and serious game components are employed to create spelling content. The study highlights the importance of tangible letters and objects in conjunction with real-world items to facilitate cooperative and collaborative learning, encouraging social interaction among learners. The proposed learning content levels are adjusted to the age of learners (4-6 years) for alleviating cognitive overload. For gamification, the system incorporates three difficulty levels tailored to three, four, and five-letter words. This structured approach systematically enhances spelling skills while simultaneously addressing the challenge of excessive screen device exposure.

Abstract:Learning with game-based interactive strategies becomes a popular trend in this mobile era. Especially for young children to acquire linguistic awareness, practicing through games can be more light-hearted and engaging. This study investigates the effectiveness of hand-eye coordination training with game-based interactive learning and multi-touch technology on orthographic awareness in an online study environment for preschool children. Field experiments in real online teaching scenarios were conducted with a large sample size of 1712 K5 preschool students in total. Our results showed a significant improvement in the orthographic awareness performance for the group which participated in the hand-eye coordination training. We conclude that the practice of visual-motor integration skills with the interactive game approach has a positive effect on orthographic awareness cultivation.
