Abstract:Niobium in iron-chloride and condensed vanadium compound, as intermediates in metallic titanium manufacture, was first separated by methyl-isobutyl-ketone extraction from the sample solution of 10M in hydrofluoric acid and 6M in sulfuric acid. The procedure was successfullyapplied for eliminating the interfering elements in the sample except for vanadium, the interfering effect of which could be removed by reducing it to vanadyl ion with an aid of SO2 gas.Niobium in the solvent layer was back-extracted into 2M ammonium fluoride solution, and the extract was evaporated to fume with three milliliters of perchloric acid. The precipitate thus formed was filtered, ignited and weighed as Nb205.The content of niobium found in iron-chlorides was 0.1 to 0.4% and that in condensed vanadium compounds was about 1%.In the Nb205 obtained, only trace tantalum was found by emission spectrography.
