Factors Affecting Employment, Unemployment, and Graduate Study for University Graduates in Beijing

Abstract:The problem of unemployed university graduates has become serious in China, being a central issue regarding unemployment recently. This paper studies the factors that determine whether a Beijing graduate finds a job, cannot find a job or entering graduate school. The innovation of this paper is using a multinomial probit model for multi-objectives, covering college graduates’ employment, unemployment and graduate study affected by three factors: reputation of college, major, and gender. This study indicates that the graduates find jobs faster and are more likely to study in graduate school if they come from higher reputation colleges. In addition, study shows graduates with engineering and business degrees find jobs more easily. Agricultural graduates have higher probability to go to graduate school. Finally, female graduates find jobs more easily than male graduates which is different from previous results, and they are more likely to go to graduate school.
