Abstract:Conductive hydrogels combine the properties of both hydrogels and conductors, making them soft, flexible, and biocompatible. These properties enable them to conform to irregular surfaces, stretch and bend without losing their electrical conductivity, and interface with biological systems. Conductive hydrogels can be utilized as conductive traces, electrodes, or as a matrix for flexible electronics. Exciting applications in sensors, tissue engineering, and human-machine interaction have been demonstrated worldwide. This review comprehensively covers the progress in this field, focusing on several main aspects: functional materials, performance improvement strategies, and wearable applications in human-related areas. Furthermore, the major approaches and challenges for improving their mechanical properties, conductivity, and long-term stability are systematically summarized.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have shown great potential in smart wearable devices and energy storage due to their unique advantages, such as the mechanical properties and physiological characteristics similar to human skins and tissues (stretchability, low modulus, flexibility, biocompatibility, etc.), the function and structure design with diversity, and the transformation of external stimuli (force, deformation, temperature, etc.) into electronic signals. Currently, a large number of CHs have been developed and designed for specific applications. In this review, we first focus on the recent progress on the synthesis strategies of all kinds of CHs. Their categories involve conductive nanomaterial-based, free ionic-based, and conductive polymer-based CHs. Whereafter, the promising applications of CHs in flexible electronic devices are discussed in detail. The relevant applications include wearable strain sensors, bioelectronics, epidermal patch electrodes, temperature sensors, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), energy storage devices, and gas sensors. Finally, we also discuss the future research direction of CHs and the possible challenges in the field.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In recent years, there has been considerable attention devoted to flexible electronic devices within the realm of biomedical engineering. These devices demonstrate the capability to accurately capture human physiological signals, thereby facilitating efficient human-computer interaction, and providing a novel approach of flexible electronics for monitoring and treating related diseases. A notable contribution to this domain is the emergence of conductive hydrogels as a novel flexible electronic material. Renowned for their exceptional flexibility, adjustable electrical conductivity, and facile processing, conductive hydrogels have emerged as the preferred material for designing and fabricating innovative flexible electronic devices. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in flexible electronic devices rooted in conductive hydrogels. It offers an in-depth exploration of existing synthesis strategies for conductive hydrogels and subsequently examines the latest progress in their applications, including flexible neural electrodes, sensors, energy storage devices and soft robots. The analysis extends to the identification of technological challenges and developmental opportunities in both the synthesis of new conductive hydrogels and their application in the dynamic field of flexible electronics.

Abstract:This work reviews the recent progress of conductive hydrogels for bioelectronic devices from the aspect of classifications and typical applications. Furthermore, the current challenges and the corresponding strategies for the future development are in‐depth discussed, aiming to promote the practical application of conductive hydrogels in the fields of biomedicine and clinical medicine. Conductive hydrogels (CHs) for flexible bioelectronic devices have raised great attention due to their tunable mechanical performances, adhesion, anti‐swelling, and biocompatibility. This review summarizes the current development of conductive hydrogel‐based flexible bioelectronic devices in the aspect of classifications and applications. Firstly, the conductive hydrogels are classified into two kinds according to the types of conductivity: ionic conductive hydrogels and electronic conductive hydrogels (hydrogel based on pure conductive materials, introducing conductive micro/nano‐materials). Secondly, the applications of conductive hydrogels for bioelectronic device, like wearable devices (strain sensor, body fluid detector, serviced in extreme environment), tissue engineering (skin, heart, nerve, muscle), and other applications (bionic robot, cancer treatment), are highly illustrated. Finally, a depth outlook is given, which aims to promote the development of this field in the future.

Abstract:The progress of soft robot industry has driven the development of electronic devices. Electronic devices used in electronic skin or wearable electronic devices require conductive materials with high sensitivity and stretchability, while traditional inorganic conductive materials such as metals and metal oxides cannot meet both conductivity and flexibility. Conductive hydrogels realize the complementary characteristics of conductive materials and hydrogels. On the basis of conductive materials ensuring electrical conductivity, hydrogels make up for the defect of unbendable material to a large extent and become the substitute of traditional inorganic conductive material. In order to adapt to different working environments, conductive hydrogels also have more excellent properties, such as mechanical properties, self-healing properties, and resistance to extreme environments, which further broadens the application field of conductive hydrogels. So far, conductive hydrogels have found wide applications in biomedicine, sensors and energy storage devices. In this paper, the research progress of conductive hydrogels in recent years is reviewed, and the conductive mechanisms of hydrogels can be divided into electronic conductive mechanism and ionic conductive mechanism. Then, the properties and applications of conductive hydrogels are described. Finally, the problems and shortcomings of conductive hydrogels were summarized, and the future development of conductive hydrogels was prospected.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their excellent conductivity and flexibility, have attracted widespread attention and research in the field of flexible wearable sensors. This paper reviews the application progress, related challenges, and future prospects of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors. Initially, the basic properties and classifications of conductive hydrogels are introduced. Subsequently, this paper discusses in detail the specific applications of conductive hydrogels in different sensor applications, such as motion detection, medical diagnostics, electronic skin, and human–computer interactions. Finally, the application prospects and challenges are summarized. Overall, the exceptional performance and multifunctionality of conductive hydrogels make them one of the most important materials for future wearable technologies. However, further research and innovation are needed to overcome the challenges faced and to realize the wider application of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors.

Abstract:Recent significant progress for developing conducting hydrogels is highlighted in this review. Preparation, fabrication, and application of the conducting hydrogels for wearable devices are summarized and discussed for comprehensive understanding. The challenges and opportunities of conducting hydrogels for novel devices are further discussed. Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have received significant attention for use in wearable devices because they retain their softness and flexibility while maintaining high conductivity. CHs are well suited for applications in skin‐contact electronics and biomedical devices owing to their high biocompatibility and conformality. Although highly conductive hydrogels for smart wearable devices are extensively researched, a detailed summary of the outstanding results of CHs is required for a comprehensive understanding. In this review, the recent progress in the preparation and fabrication of CHs is summarized for smart wearable devices. Improvements in the mechanical, electrical, and functional properties of high‐performance wearable devices are also discussed. Furthermore, recent examples of innovative and highly functional devices based on CHs that can be seamlessly integrated into daily lives are reviewed.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices to obtain accurate and efficient information interactions between humans and machines have gained increasing attention in recent years. A series of soft materials for flexible electronics have been developed to improve device performance in terms of electrical and mechanical properties. Among them, conductive polymer-based hydrogels (CPHs), which combine the tunable electronic properties of conductive polymers and the soft mechanical properties of hydrogels, are promising candidates for next-generation wearable electronic devices. This review summarized the material design and preparation of CPHs, and presented the properties of CPHs, including tunable conductivity, outstanding mechanical performance, biocompatibility, self-healing capability, resistance to freezing, and solution processability. In particular, their emerging applications in flexible electronics devices including flexible supercapacitors, flexible sensors, and biomedical electronics are highlighted. Furthermore, perspectives on existing challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:A comprehensive overview is provided on the architectural features, function characteristics, fabrication strategies, applications, and perspectives of conductive hydrogel fibers (CHFs) in flexible electronics. Moreover, the fundamental design principles and fabrication strategies are systematically introduced. Lastly, it is concluded with a perspective on the challenges and opportunities of such attractive CHFs in flexible electronics. Flexible conductive materials with intrinsic structural characteristics are currently in the spotlight of both fundamental science and advanced technological applications due to their functional preponderances such as the remarkable conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, and tunable physical and chemical properties, and so on. Typically, conductive hydrogel fibers (CHFs) are promising candidates owing to their unique characteristics including light weight, high length‐to‐diameter ratio, high deformability, and so on. Herein, a comprehensive overview of the cutting‐edge advances the CHFs involving the architectural features, function characteristics, fabrication strategies, applications, and perspectives in flexible electronics are provided. The fundamental design principles and fabrication strategies are systematically introduced including the discontinuous fabrication (the capillary polymerization and the draw spinning) and the continuous fabrication (the wet spinning, the microfluidic spinning, 3D printing, and the electrospinning). In addition, their potential applications are crucially emphasized such as flexible energy harvesting devices, flexible energy storage devices, flexible smart sensors, and flexible biomedical electronics. This review concludes with a perspective on the challenges and opportunities of such attractive CHFs, allowing for better understanding of the fundamentals and the development of advanced conductive hydrogel materials.

Abstract:Hydrogels have been attracting increasing attention in wearable electronics, due to their intrinsic biomimetic features, highly tunable chemical-physical properties (mechanical, electrical, etc), and excellent biocompatibility. Among many proposed varieties, conductive polymer-based hydrogels (CPHs) have emerged as a promising candidate for future wearable sensor designs, with a capability of realizing desired features using different tuning strategies ranging from molecular design (with a low lengthscale of 10-10 m) to micro-structural configuration (up to a lengthscale of 10-2 m). However, considerable challenges remain to be overcome, such as the limited strain sensing range due to the mechanical strength, the signal loss/instability caused by swelling/deswelling, the significant hysteresis of sensing signal, the de-hydration induced malfunctions, the surface/interfacial failure during manufacturing/processing, etc. This review aims to offer a targeted scan of recent advancements in CPH based wearable sensor technology, from the establishment of dedicated structure-property relationships in the lab to the advanced manufacturing routes for potential scale-up production. The application of CPHs in wearable sensors is also explored, with suggested new research avenues and prospects for CPHs in the future also included text goes here.

Abstract:Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for flexible electronics due to their unique properties, such as high water content, softness, and biocompatibility. In this perspective, we provide an overview of the development of hydrogels for flexible electronics, with a focus on three key aspects: mechanical properties, interfacial adhesion, and conductivity. We discuss the principles of designing high-performance hydrogels and present representative examples of their potential applications in the field of flexible electronics for healthcare. Despite significant progress, several challenges remain, including improving the antifatigue capability, enhancing interfacial adhesion, and balancing water content in wet environments. Additionally, we highlight the importance of considering the hydrogel-cell interactions and the dynamic properties of hydrogels in future research. Looking ahead, the future of hydrogels in flexible electronics is promising, with exciting opportunities on the horizon, but continued investment in research and development is necessary to overcome the remaining challenges.

Abstract:Hydrogels made from conductive organic materials have gained significant interest in recent years due to their wide range of uses, such as electrical conductors, freezing resistors, biosensors, actuators, biomedical engineering materials, drug carrier, artificial organs, flexible electronics, battery solar cells, soft robotics, and self-healers. Nevertheless, the insufficient level of effectiveness in electroconductive hydrogels serves as a driving force for researchers to intensify their endeavors in this domain. This article provides a concise overview of the recent advancements in creating self-healing single- or multi-network (double or triple) conductive hydrogels (CHs) using a range of natural and synthetic polymers and monomers. We deliberated on the efficacy, benefits, and drawbacks of several conductive hydrogels. This paper emphasizes the use of natural polymers and innovative 3D printing CHs-based technology to create self-healing conductive gels for flexible electronics. In conclusion, advantages and disadvantages have been noted, and some potential opportunities for self-healing single- or multi-network hydrogels have been proposed.

Abstract:Due to the good biocompatibility and easy regulation of hydrogels, hydrogel-based flexible sensors have flourished in the fields of wearable electronics, electronic skin, and soft robotics in recent years. The performance of conductive hydrogel-based sensors is greatly influenced by the properties of hydrogel functional materials. This review focuses on and summarizes the preparation strategies and general methods of functional conductive hydrogels for flexible sensors. Firstly, the general properties and improvement methods of conductive hydrogels are briefly introduced, mainly including electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. In practical applications, some additional functions that enable conductive hydrogel-based sensors to maintain excellent performance in the face of complex or harsh application conditions are indispensable. The strategies for endowing conductive hydrogels with additional functions mainly include self-healing properties, anti-swelling properties, anti-freezing properties, and self-adhesion properties are summarized in this review. The application of functional conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors, as well as the development prospects and challenges based on functional conductive hydrogels are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels, known for their flexibility, biocompatibility, and conductivity, have found extensive applications in fields such as healthcare, environmental monitoring, and soft robotics. Recent advancements in 3D printing technologies have transformed the fabrication of conductive hydrogels, creating new opportunities for sensing applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in the fabrication and application of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors. First, the basic principles and fabrication techniques of conductive hydrogels are briefly reviewed. We then explore various 3D printing methods for conductive hydrogels, discussing their respective strengths and limitations. The review also summarizes the applications of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel-based sensors. In addition, perspectives on 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors are highlighted. This review aims to equip researchers and engineers with insights into the current landscape of 3D-printed conductive hydrogel sensors and to inspire future innovations in this promising field.

Abstract:Ionic hydrogels possess great advantages over traditional electronic devices due to their notable properties such as excellent flexibility, high conductivity, and tunable gel structure, making them widely employed in electronic skins for electrophysiological monitoring. However, conventional electronic skins are usually easy to detach from the skin and suffer from stress fatigue due to frequent body movements, impeding user experience in health monitoring. Abstract:Significance We present an electronic skin (E-skin) based on hydroxypropyl cellulose composite hydrogel with stable cholesteric liquid-crystal structures and bright structural colors. Due to the utilization of the composite hydrogel with multiple responsiveness as a main building block, the E-skin can respond to pressure, tension, and temperature, and perform optical sensing of these external stimuli through color migration caused by internal structural changes. By adding carbon nanotubes, the composite hydrogel can simultaneously output these stimuli as electrical signals. Due to this dual-responsive mechanism under stimuli, the E-skin has great research value in health care and variable devices.

Abstract:The past few decades have witnessed the rapid advancement and broad applications of flexible bioelectronics, in wearable and implantable electronics, brain‐computer interfaces, neural science and technology, clinical diagnosis and treatment, etc. It is noteworthy that soft and elastic conductive hydrogels (CHs), owing to their multiple similarities with biological tissues in terms of mechanics, electronics, water‐rich, and biological functions, have successfully bridged the gap between rigid electronics and soft biology. Multifunctional hydrogel bioelectronics, emerging as a new generation of promising material candidates, have authentically established highly compatible and reliable, high‐quality bioelectronic interfaces, particularly in bioelectronic recording and stimulation. In this review, we summarize the material basis and design principles involved in constructing hydrogel bioelectronic interfaces, and systematically discuss the fundamental mechanism and unique advantages in bioelectrical interfacing with the biological surface. Furthermore, an overview of the state‐of‐the‐art manufacturing strategies for hydrogel bioelectronic interfaces with enhanced biocompatibility and integration with the biological system is presented. This review finally exemplifies the unprecedented advancement and impetus towards bioelectronic recording and stimulation, especially in implantable and integrated hydrogel bioelectronic systems, and concludes with a perspective expectation for hydrogel bioelectronics in clinical and biomedical applications. Abstract:Flexible electronics is an emerging field of research involving multiple disciplines, which include but not limited to physics, chemistry, materials science, electronic engineering, and biology. However, the broad applications of flexible electronics are still restricted due to several limitations, including high Young's modulus, poor biocompatibility, and poor responsiveness. Innovative materials aiming for overcoming these drawbacks and boost its practical application is highly desirable. Hydrogel is a class of 3D crosslinked hydrated polymer networks, and its exceptional material properties render it a promising candidate for the next generation of flexible electronics. Here, we review the latest methods of synthesizing advanced functional hydrogels and the state‐of‐art applications of hydrogel‐based flexible electronics in various fields. More importantly, we discuss on the correlation between properties of the hydrogel and device performance, to have better understanding of the development of flexible electronics by using environmentally responsive hydrogels. Abstract:Bioelectronics have become an emerging research field for their wide application in health monitoring and human–computer interaction. Conductive hydrogels are promising candidates for the fabrication of bioelectronics. In this review, the structural characteristics, design principles, operation mechanisms and advantages of multifunctional conductive hydrogels for bioelectronics are highlighted. First, the representative conductive materials, the general synthetic approaches of conductive hydrogels and the conductive mechanism are introduced, the latter of which comprises electronic conduction and ionic conduction. Then this review focuses on the multifunctional design criteria and operation mechanisms of conductive hydrogels, including mechanical reinforcement, self-healing mechanisms, antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. The chemical reactions and interactions to achieve the self-healing function, like Diels–Alder reaction, Schiff base bonds, dynamic borate ester bonds, ionic and metal-coordination interaction, hydrogen bonding, and host–guest interaction, are clarified clearly. The antibacterial properties of hydrogels such as polymer-based inherent antibacterial hydrogels, inorganic nanoparticle-loaded antibacterial hydrogels, antibiotic-loaded antibacterial hydrogels and stimuli-responsive antibacterial hydrogels are elucidated. Finally, the applications of multifunctional conductive hydrogels in bioelectronics, and challenges and opportunities are discussed. This review provides a deep understanding of the mechanisms and design principles of multifunctional conductive hydrogels, and proposes a new perspective for next-generation hydrogel-based bioelectronics.

Abstract:Ionically conductive hydrogels (ICHs) are considered promising flexible electronic devices and various wearable sensors due to the integration of the conductive performance and soft nature of human tissue-like materials with mechanical and sensory traits. Recently, substantial progress has been made in the research of ICHs, including high conductivity, solution processability, strong adhesion, high stretchability, high self-healing ability, and good biocompatibility. These advanced researches also promote their excellent application prospects in medical monitoring, sports health, smart wear, and other fields. This article reviewed ICHs' current classification and design strategies in biomedical applications and the structure–activity relationship of the interface between biological systems and electronics. Furthermore, the typical cases of frontiers of skin interface applications of ICHs were elaborated in transdermal drug delivery, wound healing, disease diagnosis and treatment, and human–computer interaction. This article aims to inspire related research on ionically conductive hydrogels in the biomedical field and promote the innovation and application of flexible wearable electronic device technology.
