Abstract:The repertory grid technique was used to measure the responses of three groups of subjects to slides of 12 paintings. Subjects in Groups I and II were then exposed to information relevant to the paintings. In Group III subjects received information which was not directly relevant to the paintings. Grids were then re-elicited. Various analyses of the grids showed that information can change subjects' responses to paintings but that such changes reflect alterations in use of constructs rather than in the actual perception of the paintings. It is argued that the repertory grid may be a valuable technique in experimental aesthetics as it can measure different aspects of the aesthetic response.
