Abstract:While contemporary South Korea is fairly westernized but represents a lag in the spheres of culture and politics, it is expected that the current Korean wave or Hallyu 4.0 – popular cultural content, diffused as of 2016 – are cumulatively signified by feminist themes, merged with more traditional Korean and East Asian cultural elements. Five representative Hallyu 4.0 dramas are examined here, based on cultural globalization theory (e.g., hybridization), along with a review of some earlier studies of Korean dramas and relevant strands of feminist scholarship. The findings suggest that much of the moderately modern elements found in earlier waves of Korean drama are still present, while liberal or neoliberal feminist elements are manifest in all five shows, although to different degrees. This ideological shift, in part, reflects recent sociocultural changes.
The popularity of Korean romance novels in contemporary China: A feminist interpretation

Abstract:This essay deals with Korean romance novels translated into Chinese, especially the works of Kim Ha‐in and Guiyeoni which forms a pattern of cross‐cultural communication from the marginal culture to the center. Most studies treat them as an aspect of fast‐food culture that undermines serious literature, with little attention to this literary and cultural phenomenon. Why are Korean romance novels so popular in contemporary China? There are some answers from different perspectives. However, it is obvious that Korean romance novels offered Chinese women the opportunity to reconceptualize gender. This article contributes to criticism on the interface between Korean romance novels and Chinese feminism and further unveils the relationship between Korean popular romance novels and new interpretations of femininity in contemporary China. The success of Korean romance novels benefits from the conscious choice of Chinese readers in the cross‐cultural context, influenced by changes in Chinese women's concept of gender. The response to the aesthetic needs and expectations of readers has prompted the appearance of inverted cultural export, wherein such novels influence other cultures, reflecting upon and even challenging the gender concepts of other countries, which manifests the symbiotic relationship between popular literature and feminism.

Abstract:This book is a compilation of female narratives focused on themes such as post-war society, East Asia, and the female in literary works by South Koreans, North Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Koreans living in Japan, and Okinawans. By comparing various female narratives across the region, this interesting volume unveils how certain aspects of East Asian lives overlap or are clearly distinct from one another. Part 1 examines the points of contact between the female narratives of the Korean peninsula, China and Japan. Part 2 explores the possibility of East Asian female solidarity based on the boundaries and intersections shown in female literature by Okinawans, Koreans living in Japan and Taiwanese. Part 3 highlights, from an East Asian perspective, the achievements and significance of feminist narratives through notable writers and works which have emerged from Korean and Japanese literary field. This book aims to discuss the aforementioned female narratives at the level of the East Asian community, thereby expanding the analysis beyond states and local regions.

Abstract:This study begins with questions about the politics of menstruation that have been unspoken and neglected issues in Korean feminist history. Menstruation first appeared in social discourse in Korean society, raised by a few women’s groups in the midst of the new feminist movement. This study examines three activities of the movement: the “Menstruation Festival,” “Pad Up–Down Campaign,” and “Bloodsisters Solidarity” for evaluation as historical cases of Korean menstrual activism, 1999–2012. It considers the strategies and differences in sociocultural contexts wherein concerns about menstruation converge with the feminist agenda. Characteristics of menstrual activism in Korea surfaced in issues pertaining to women’s health advocacy, Young Feminist cultural feminism, radical feminism and eco-feminism surrounding the “alternative menstrual pad” movement. These processes of the menstrual activism of grassroots women’s groups are examined here and reveal that the dominance of consumerism and the androcentric, gender-discriminatory culture are related to the gender politics of menstruation in South Korea.

Abstract:This paper studies feminist geopolitical practices in South Korea in the context of “comfort women” forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese military around the Second World War. Although there has been a considerable amount of literature penned on the comfort women issue, existing discussions focus largely on the conflict between nationalist and feminist paradigms, while largely minimizing feminist activism and changing gender narratives within Korean society. Therefore, this research aims to expand the field by considering the struggles that comfort women have endured through the lens of feminist geopolitical scholarship. I argue that comfort women activism constitutes a form of feminist geopolitical practice in a way that challenges masculine gender narratives. It has opened up new spaces where comfort women survivors can produce a sense of “survivorhood” and move beyond passivity throughout their lives. The rise of their active voices signals the overturning of traditional patriarchal structures; consequently, along with other forms of activism, these narratives have eventually led to a shift in public attitudes. Unlike how nationalist accounts were dominant in the early 1990s, the increased public attention towards the feminist accounts in the mid-2010s has subsequently increased media coverage of survivors and feminist practices.

Abstract:Ugandan and South African contemporary women’s narratives reflect on the rapid pace of change in the social lives of women in two countries that are contending with the aftermath of conflict and violence. This article will interrogate how contemporary women writers such as Goretti Kyomuhendo ( Whispers from Vera), Zukiswa Wanner ( The Madams and Behind Every Successful Man) and Cynthia Jele ( Happiness is a Four-Letter Word) are embracing chick-lit as a form of writing, while simultaneously short-circuiting this genre to create an experimental form that allows them to reflect on the realities of women and engage with the contradictions, complexities and ambiguities of contemporary feminine subjectivities. Although chick-lit as a genre has been dismissed as trivial and frivolous, ostensibly because it deals with women’s experiences, this article argues that this particular form of chick-lit is more political and attempts to disrupt the original chick-lit by offering a critique of society. It articulates how women see themselves and their relationships with their parents, spouses and, most importantly, female friends; reflects on the challenges that modern women face in the work environment; interrogates women’s realities concerning love, marriage and motherhood; explores concepts of sexual desire and intimacy; and negotiates the dilemmas of a patriarchal society, while also confronting issues of class and race. These contemporary women writers are adopting this genre because it allows them to reflect on realities that are complex and uncertain, to transform gender relations, to redefine the roles of women and to construct new feminine subjectivities.

Abstract:Abstract Gender is a quintessential issue in Asian American literature, since Asian Americans are seen as weak with feminine qualities, according to the Western colonial concept. This paper examines Korean American women’s power through an analysis of Hongyong, the female protagonist in Helie Lee’s Still Life with Rice , who survives Japanese colonization in Korea and the Korean War and finally starts her new life as a Korean American woman in the United States. Hongyong goes beyond the concept of patriarchy in Korea and rescues herself and her family with her intelligence, determination, power, and bravery. As an Asian woman who successfully resettles in the United States, her achievement refutes the Western colonial concept which double-feminizes Asian women and the binary concept about the West and the East. Through Hongyong, the image of Korean American women, as part of Asian American women, is transformed from weak and powerless to strong and powerful.
Reception and revision of women-related translation paratexts: South Korean cases

Abstract:In the most recent feminist movement in South Korea, women challenged misogynist discourses in various ways. They made vicious comments about those who created and disseminated misogynistic discourses. They also strongly demanded a revision of misogynistic texts and boycotted cultural products in which women were described inappropriately. Against this backdrop, the present study examines misogynistic paratexts of translations published in South Korea to show how gender ideology could affect the reception and revision of paratexts and how closely translations and paratexts could be interrelated in a feminist context. The paratexts examined in this article are (1) a translator's postface, (2) a subtitled trailer, (3) transcreated movie posters, and (4) promotional web-texts for a localised mobile game. These paratexts were strongly criticised and revised in a way that reflected particular gender perspectives. The article concludes with brief discussion about paratext-readers, paratext-creators, and relations between paratexts and translations.

Abstract:The background of the research is based on the problems and dilemmas faced by women in modern East Asian society. The research investigated how Confuciuss thoughts put social constraints on women in China, Japan, and South Korea because of their gender through the content of the books and the derived meaning of folk while looking at the ideological transformation of women in society to resist these regulations. People in those societies are often disciplined by thousands of years of traditional etiquette, hence the conflict between self-consciousness and cultural oppression brought about by Confucianism becomes an important topic among East Asian scholars. The paper aims to show how the Confucius norms build on the fixed gender role in different ways and analyze the social oppression of East Asian women, with the resistance and struggle that women are making in these countries. Hence a better understanding of the progress of women's rights in East Asian countries and the role of women in society. The significance of the paper is that it makes up the research gap on how Confucian culture oppresses women's social status and uses realistic scenes while demonstrating the transformation of women's self-consciousness under these regulations in a chronological sequence.
Designing new Korean mothers, daughters-in-law, and wives: an analysis of Korean textbooks for newly arrived marriage migrants in South Korea

Abstract:Textbooks are sociocultural materials, reflecting political decisions, educational beliefs and priorities, cultural realities and language policies. As part of a larger ethnographic study which investigated the multilingual socialization of foreign wives in South Korea, I present the nature and extent of the gender-making process through an analysis of Korean textbooks for recently arrived female marriage migrants, which provides an understanding of the extent to which gender and race are ingrained in shaping linguistic nationalism in globalized times. I first introduce a four-stage life cycle designed by the South Korean government and situate Korean textbook series called Korean Language Learning With International Marriage Migrant Women as an intervention used early in the settlement period for foreign mothers. Then, I analyze the textual and multimodal representation of family identities taken from six textbook series, focusing on lessons, dialogues, and characters that are presented. The results of the study demonstrate how the state presents its attempts to transform foreign wives into a new type of 'wise mother good wife' in the globalized, multilingual world. I demonstrate the ways in which state-driven gender identity production is not simply (re)producing the gender divide but also aligned with nation-making processes that are facing challenges in these globalized times.

The Implications of Queer Representation in Contemporary South Korean TV Narratives

Abstract:Existing scholarly works on the topic of queer representation in South Korean media focus primarily on Korean cinema and K-pop, but there are far fewer studies on queer or queer-coded portrayals in Korean TV media. Queer characters and relationships are gradually becoming more visible in mainstream South Korean TV with some examples being Semantic Error which centers on the romantic relationship between two men and Nevertheless which depicts the feelings of friendship between two women turn clearly romantic. Considering the significant rise in popularity of Korean TV dramas not only in Asia but also in western society, where audiences are more conscious of queer narratives, the realm of queer representation in Korean TV definitely warrants more scholarly attention. I aim to contribute to the conversation about depictions of queerness in Korean media by analyzing the representation of queer characters in 2021 TV drama Work Later, Drink Now, specifically the queer subtext of Jigoo and Jiyeon’s relationship, and how this story reveals South Korean perceptions of queer experiences by matching and/or distinguishing itself from the tragic narratives that queer characters are often depicted in Korean TV dramas. I will also analyze the reception of this show by South Korean society in relation to queer identity based on its references in Korean pop culture and online fan discussions. I argue that the writer of Work Later, Drink Now intended to provide commentary not only on the situation of women in contemporary South Korean society, but she also pushed an underlying queer narrative, aiming to shed light on the reality of being, specifically, a queer woman in South Korea.
The Awakening of Women's Consciousness in the Workplace in China and Korea Through Film and TV Series

Abstract:In the context of a patriarchal society, men occupy a relatively dominant position in both social life and the workplace. In contrast, women are usually just wives, daughters-in-law, and mothers in the family rather than "women" per se. Based on the awareness of this, the purpose of this paper is to study the process of awakening women's consciousness in the workplace in China and Korea in recent years and the reasons affecting them. The analysis of this article examines the images of women in the film and television works "KIM JI-YOUNG, BORN 1982" and "Fighting Youth" to analyze the changing status of women in the workplace and the main factors affecting the awakening of women's consciousness. The present study acknowledges that the emergence of female consciousness is propelled by intrinsic factors within women themselves. The awakening of female consciousness is driven by women's questioning and thinking, which leads to change.
Women’s issues, critical actors and the media: substantive representation of women and gendered media coverage in South Korea

Abstract:The article investigates whether media coverage varies for male and female legislators with regards to their activities in promoting women’s interests. To test this, 30 key women’s-issue-promoting legislators in South Korea are selected, primarily based on their legislative significance within a women’s-issue bill co-sponsorship network between 2004 and 2016, and their various substantive representation efforts are analysed by examining 45 news outlets. Findings reveal that while receiving less media coverage than their male counterparts overall, female legislators have higher odds of receiving a more focused spotlight concerning women’s-issue-promotion efforts. However, the gendered media coverage was only driven by women’s issues with strong stereotypically feminine policy characteristics, for example, abortion, contraception and sexual harassment, and not by those with both feminine and masculine policy characteristics, such as childcare support and maternity leave. The article demonstrates the importance of media-bias conditionality and thus calls for a more nuanced approach to be taken in future research.
Between invisibility and having a voice: The marginalization of gendered non-fiction writers in the South Korean television industry

Abstract:Media, Culture &Society, Ahead of Print. This article examines how gendered workers experience invisibility in the South Korean television industry, focusing on writers who produce non-fiction programs, such as journalism shows and documentaries. Based on my in-depth interviews with 41 research participants, I reveal how the patriarchal, capitalist, and intensely hierarchical labour management in the industry has shaped an invisible writing workforce who are mostly women. Specifically, my research suggests that the exploitation of this invisible writing workforce takes two forms: the devaluation and underpayment of their labour and putting to work their marginalized subjectivities to enhance the quality of the programs in the production process. Finally, this research shows how writers recognize themselves as invisible workers and understand their invisibility as a form of discrimination and exclusion.

Abstract:The “patriarchy” that has developed throughout Korean history, and human civilization as a whole, has lasted for millennia. This systematic, structured and unjust system of male domination over women has conferred a higher status, value and privilege on men. These institutions and behaviours form the conceptual framework of sexism, and at the heart of patriarchy is the maintenance and rationalisation of male privilege and power. Several of Park Chan-wook’s highly representative women’s films in recent years have stood up to observe society from a woman’s point of view, creating a new image of women. This essay takes director Table Chan-wook’s latest work, The Resolution to Break up, as an example, and discusses the image of women in Park Chan-wook’s films. Park Zan- wook creates a special and tense female image with the highly contrasting character of Song Seo-rae. Furthermore, he uses this unique female figure as a leading narrative to create a film that highly combines romance, thriller and suspense. As well as the main character Song Seo-rae, a typical oriental woman, she shows the consciousness of women’s self-awareness in modern society, facing up to her emotions and making choices in her relationships, who is no longer a traditional female figure who can be swayed by her emotions.

Abstract:In the last century, South Korea has experienced a foreign occupation, a civil war that left at least 1.5 million civilians dead, a series of dictatorships, and economic development at breakneck speed. For the older adults in their 80s whose childhood and early adulthoods might have been spent under foreign occupation or war, the world of their childhood no longer exists. South Korea has changed from an agrarian, deeply conservative Confucian country to one that is urban and industrial, with changed values and mores. Using a critical feminist framework, we present the ways in which a group of older women have made meaning out of their past struggles and make sense of—and savor—their current lives. Through the narratives, the participants talk about the meanings that they constructed from the struggles, savoring of past fond memories, and current appreciation of their improved circumstances and enjoyment of daily living.

Abstract:Since its release, the film Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 (2019) has triggered national debate both in South Korea and China. Fierce protest by male spectators and applause by female spectators testified to its effective exposure of the smothering patriarchal dominance in South Korea. This article will interpret the symbol of "possession by devil" to reveal women's imprisonment and madness under patriarchy. Such a possession also provides an alternative language to articulate women's will to transgress gender norms. From pathologic raving to rational writing, a female narrating subjectivity is finally established.

Abstract:In this article, we read and analyse selected young adult novels by Chinese-German author Wei Cheng that address the dilemmas faced by young female Chinese immigrants in Western countries. The aim is to explore the ways in which the construction of femininity and gender are inextricably bound up with categories of race and ethnicity in China-West encounters, and to probe the dynamics of such encounters embedded in the larger socio-political power structures. Through a critical analysis of the representation of Chinese femininity vis-à-vis Western masculinity, the essay interrogates the workings of the "Orientalist gaze" in relation to patriarchy and gender politics. The portrayals of the cross-racial encounter in Shaonv de Hong Chenyi ( The Girl's Red T-Shirt ), which reiterate received ideas about the Orient, may be read as a product of self-Orientalisation, where the intriguing position of the adolescent Chinese girl prompts a rethinking of postcolonial gendered subjectivities. While self-Orientalisation may work to legitimate the discourse of Orientalism, the reading of Shaonv de Hong Faqia ( The Girl's Red Hairpin ) reveals the ways in which self-Orientalisation could function as strategic essentialism that allows the female "Oriental" Other to gaze back and stand Orientalism on its head. The marriage between gendered and postcolonial approaches to children's and young adult texts promises to act as a crucial intervention in the global struggle against hegemony.

Abstract:Choi Seung-ja confesses the absence of an existential self in a poetry book in the 1980s and declares denial of the oppressive world. Decolonist feminism combined a decolonist view of escaping imperial colonialism with a feminist view of breaking away from patriarchal oppression structures. In her poems, Choi Seung-ja criticizes the structure of imperialist oppression, resists colonial patriarchal discrimination, and shows this decolonist feminist perspective. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, a representative scholar of decolonist feminism, suggests a way to eliminate racism, sexism, bourgeois individualist ideology, and the injustice of neo-colonialism by contacting and confronting peripheral and Western-centered cultures. In this paper, I would like to analyze Choi Seung-ja's poem, which is the voice of the sub-subject from the perspective of the Postcolonial Feminism.
