Abstract:One of the challenges of landfill leachate management is that it is high in organic matter, nitrogen, as well as other toxic compounds, thus complicating biological treatment. In addition, due to the presence of free ammonia and toxic substances, it is necessary to inhibit the nitrification of the landfill leachate. Accordingly, this study explored the performance of granular sludge sequencing batch reactor (GSBR) for nutrient removal from landfill leachate of a metropolis in Iran. Special emphasis was placed on the simultaneous nitrification–denitrification of leachate. The leachate sample was removed from the waste disposal site of Hamedan. The concentrations of COD, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate and nitrite, phosphorus, and pH were measured based on the book of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. In addition, Simultaneous nitrification–denitrification efficiency was estimated using the Equation, with glucose used as the main biogenic substrate to dilute landfill leachate at 20% and 50% ratios at three hydraulic retention times of 6, 4.5, and 2.1 h. The average of two concentrations of the organic load was 6.21 and 20 g COD/liter per day, which was related to 20% and 50% of the concentration of leachate entering the GSBR biological reactor. According to the results, the extent of removal of carbon organic matter as well as nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients was higher during longer HRT. The factors affecting the reduction in nitrogen compounds, nitrification, and simultaneous denitrification and phosphorus included pH, aeration time, starvation-satiety period, and organic loading.
