Abstract:Piezo-actuated, flexure hinge-based compliant mechanisms have been frequently used in precision engineering in the last few decades. There have been a considerable number of publications on modeling the displacement amplification behavior of rhombus-type and bridge-type compliant mechanisms. However, due to an unclear geometric approximation and mechanical assumption between these two flexures, it is very difficult to obtain an exact description of the kinematic performance using previous analytical models, especially when the designed angle of the compliant mechanisms is small. Therefore, enhanced theoretical models of the displacement amplification ratio for rhombus-type and bridge-type compliant mechanisms are proposed to improve the prediction accuracy based on the distinct force analysis between these two flexures. The energy conservation law and the elastic beam theory are employed for modeling with consideration of the translational and rotational stiffness. Theoretical and finite elemental results show that the prediction errors of the displacement amplification ratio will be enlarged if the bridge-type flexure is simplified as a rhombic structure to perform mechanical modeling. More importantly, the proposed models exhibit better performance than the previous models, which is further verified by experiments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem that the existing theoretical models are not accurate enough in predicting the displacement amplification ratio of piezoelectric - driven flexible mechanisms at small design angles. Specifically, the paper focuses on the displacement amplification behavior modeling of rhombic and bridge - type flexible mechanisms. Due to the unclear geometric approximation and mechanical assumptions between these two flexible mechanisms, it is difficult to accurately describe their kinematic performance using previous analytical models, especially when the design angle is small. Therefore, the paper proposes enhanced theoretical models to improve the prediction accuracy. These models are based on different force analyses between the two flexible mechanisms, and take into account translational and rotational stiffness, and are modeled using the law of conservation of energy and the elastic beam theory. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Distinguish the mechanical characteristics of rhombic and bridge - type flexible mechanisms**: In the rhombic flexible mechanism, the piezoelectric driving force is not in the direction of the flexible arm, which results in a changing moment in the flexible arm; while in the bridge - type flexible mechanism, the piezoelectric driving force is along the axis of the flexible hinge, so a constant moment should be established in the flexible hinge. 2. **Propose an improved displacement amplification ratio model**: By using the principle of conservation of energy and the elastic beam theory, enhanced analytical models of the displacement amplification ratio for the two flexible mechanisms are derived, abandoning the approximate geometric relationships commonly used in past studies. 3. **Consider the stress concentration effect**: Especially in the bridge - type flexible mechanism, the stress concentration effect of the flexible hinge is considered, further improving the prediction accuracy of the theoretical model. Through finite - element analysis and experimental verification, the paper proves that the proposed models have better prediction accuracy than the existing models at small design angles, especially in applications requiring a large displacement amplification ratio. In addition, the paper emphasizes that when performing force analysis, the bridge - type flexible mechanism should not be simply equated with the rhombic model, and different kinematic models should be used for rhombic and bridge - type flexible mechanisms respectively to obtain accurate performance prediction and design formulas.
