Abstract:This paper describes the effect of reservoir temperature changes on the performance of the organic rankine cycle (ORC) system which utilizes brine resulted from the separation process of four production wells in Cluster-5, Lahendong Unit III Geothermal Power Plant. The equation of reservoir temperature degradation prediction due to cooler brine injection has been obtained by the assumption of the brine injection mass flow rate of 50 kg/s. The data shows that the temperature degradation will begin after the second year, from 280 °C to approximately 248.51 °C on the 30th year. The degradation of reservoir temperature will also affect the prediction of brine temperature degradation separated from the separator, from 182.02 °C to 154.92 °C on the 30th year. The analysis result of the decrease of brine temperature input on the ORC system designed and simulated using Cycle Tempo 5.1 shows the decrease of mass flow rate of Dowterm J, R245fa, and water cooling needed, so that affect the reduction of efficient UA value needed in brine-thermal oil heat exchanger, evaporator, pre-heater, regenerator, and condenser. Those also cause the reduction of gross power produced, from 3.9 MW at the beginning 8th-year operation to 1.3 MW at the end of the life cycle system planned. Therefore, the paper suggests that it will be better if the size of the ORC design which will be installed has a gross power capacity of 1.3 MW corresponding to the end of well exploitation as design value rather than the initial value as commonly executed in the sector.
