Abstract:The importance of approaching the study of young people through their own experiences has been well established in the sociological and anthropological records. But less attention has been paid to how the impersonal forces of history and political economy are constituted throughout the social domain to inform those experiences. Drawing from 15 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Rwanda, this article elaborates upon the concept and application of “subjectivity” in the study of children’s lives.
