Abstract:Transition metal porphyrin complexes have been mounted in a three dimensional homogenous distribution inside the ionomer of catalyst layers in MEAs to achieve competitive fuel cell catalysis activity. The effect of electrode components including ionomer, carbon, catalyst, and mediator, and ionomer film thickness, is investigated in fuel cell molecular catalysis system. Membrane electrode assembly (MEA) durability testing has been conducted. SEM and TEM techniques are employed to investigate molecular catalysis electrode micro- and nano- structure and morphology. To date, surprisingly, the best fuel cell performance, i.e. 1280 mA/cm2 of maximum/short-circuit current density is achieved, approaching that of Pt-based electrode, indicating higher turnover frequencies than Pt although with poorer voltages.

Abstract:AbstractIn anion exchange membrane fuel cells, catalytic reactions occur at a well‐defined three‐phase interface, wherein conventional heterogeneous catalyst layer structures exacerbate problems, such as low catalyst utilization and limited mass transfer. We developed a structural engineering strategy to immobilize a molecular catalyst tetrakis(4‐methoxyphenyl)porphyrin cobalt(II) (TMPPCo) on the side chains of an ionomer (polyfluorene, PF) to obtain a composite material (PF‐TMPPCo), thereby achieving a homogeneous catalysis environment inside ion‐flow channels, with greatly improved mass transfer and turnover frequency as a result of 100 % utilization of the catalyst molecules. The unique structure of the homogeneous catalysis system comprising interconnected nanoreactors exhibits advantages of low overpotential and high fuel‐cell power density. This strategy of reshaping of the catalyst layer structure may serve as a new platform for applications of many molecular catalysts in fuel cells.
Microporous Layers with Different Decorative Patterns for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:To optimize the interface of the catalyst layer (CL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), microporous layers (MPLs) with different decorative patterns were prepared. Carbon paper treated with polytetrafluoroethylene was used as a substrate for the coating of MPLs. To accelerate water removal and gas permeation, ammonium chloride was utilized to improve the porous structure of MPLs. Owing to the recrystallization and pyrolysis of ammonium chloride with different contents, the surface of MPLs exhibited point-, line-, and flowerlike patterns. Membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were assembled to evaluate the performance of MPLs with different decorative patterns. From measurements, an MEA containing a porosity-graded MPL (MPL-G) with a flowerlike pattern exhibited the best electrochemical performance. It is because that graded porosity accelerates the removal of excessive water. The flowerlike pattern facilitates the diffusion of the reactant gas at the interface of the catalyst layer and MPL. With the measurement of segmented cell technology, such MEAs revealed an improved redispersion of reactant gases. Furthermore, the produced water was compressed to the gas outlet, providing a larger active region for reaction. These results indicate that pattern design of MPLs is a promising strategy to improve the mass-transfer efficiency at the interface of the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer.
Modelling Water Intrusion and Oxygen Diffusion in a Reconstructed Microporous Layer of PEM Fuel Cells

Abstract:The hydrophobic microporous layer (MPL) in PEM fuel cell improves water management but reduces oxygen transport. We investigate these conflict impacts using nanotomography and pore-scale modelling. The binary image of a MPL is acquired using FIB/SEM tomography. The water produced at the cathode is assumed to condense in the catalyst layer (CL), and then builds up a pressure before moving into the MPL. Water distribution in the MPL is calculated from its pore geometry, and oxygen transport through it is simulated using pore-scale models considering both bulk and Knudsen diffusions. The simulated oxygen concentration and flux at all voxels are volumetrically averaged to calculate the effective diffusion coefficients. For water flow, we found that when the MPL is too hydrophobic, water is unable to move through it and must find alternative exits. For oxygen diffusion, we found that the interaction of the bulk and Knudsen diffusions at pore scale creates an extra resistance after the volumetric average, and that the conventional dusty model substantially overestimates the effective diffusion coefficient.
Microporous Layer Containing CeO2-Doped 3D Graphene Foam for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells at Varying Operating Conditions.

Abstract:To improve the interfacial mass-transfer efficiency, microporous layers (MPLs) containing CeO2 nanorods and the CeO2 nano-network were prepared for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In order to minimize the contact resistance, the three-dimensional (3D) graphene foam (3D-GF) was used as the carrier for the deposition of CeO2 nanorods and the nano-network. The CeO2-doped 3D-GF anchored at the interface between the catalyst layer and microporous layer manufactured several novel functional protrusions. To evaluate the electrochemical property, the normal MPL, the MPL containing raw 3D-GF, and MPLs containing different kinds of CeO2-doped 3D-GF were used to assemble the membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Measurements show that the CeO2-doped 3D-GF improved the reaction kinetics of the cathode effectively. In addition, the hydrophilic CeO2-doped 3D-GF worked as the water receiver to prevent the dehydration of MEAs at dry operating condition. Besides, at a high current density or humid operating condition, the CeO2-doped 3D-GF provided the pathway for water removal. Compared with the CeO2 nanorods, the CeO2 nano-network on 3D-GF revealed a higher adaptability at varying operating conditions. Hence, such composition and structure design of MPL is a promising strategy for the optimization of high-performance PEMFCs.
Controlling the Microscopic Morphology and Permeability of Catalyst Layers in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells by Adjusting Catalyst Ink Agglomerates

Abstract:Since agglomerates in catalyst inks affect the catalyst layers (CL) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), it is important to study the connection among catalyst agglomerates, CL structure, and MEA performance. This study investigates the effect of Pt/GC catalyst agglomerates on the morphology and permeability of the CL by modulating the properties of the catalyst ink in two different ways. Additionally, MEA was further electrochemically tested to understand the relationship between the catalyst agglomerates and MEA performance. The result shows that High-pressure homogenization is more effective than mechanical shear mixing in dispersing the agglomerates in catalyst inks. However, the excessive homogenization pressure produced larger agglomerated particles, probably because more effective dispersion caused by higher homogenization pressure supplies new chain carriers for polymerization and higher temperature caused by higher homogenization pressure. Moreover, the surface of the CL fabricated in inks prepared by a homogenizer is more uniform, neat, and hydrophilic. But the number of secondary pores in the catalyst layer decreases at excessive homogeneous pressure, and the water permeability becomes poor, which in turn result in lower performance and higher mass transfer resistance. The electrochemical performance test results showed that the MEA with a relatively hydrophobic CL had a performance of 0.707 V at 1000 mA cm(-2), which was 30 mV higher than that with a relatively hydrophilic CL. This study provides insights for better tuning the properties of catalyst ink, CL morphology, and permeability to obtain better performance of MEA. (C) 2021 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:The structural engineering of catalyst layers (CLs) offers a promising route to the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). It remains a challenging research topic by exploring the effect of different side chain ionomer on the structure of the catalyst layer. An in-depth analysis of the ionomer dispersion behavior in the catalyst ink is key to achieving optimal CL structure. In this work, the effect of ionomer side chain structure on cluster dispersion in catalyst ink and CL microstructure is investigated to reveal the correlation between catalyst ink, CL microstructure, and performance. When short-side chain (SSC) ionomers are used, the particle size distribution of clusters is uniform, the ionomer film on the surface of clusters is thinner, a homo-geneous and continuous ionomer network is obtained, and the surface cracks on the CL are smaller and less. Therefore, the SSC membrane electrode assembly (MEA) has better proton conduction ability and lower mass transport resistance. Meanwhile, SSC-MEA has better voltage stability and less voltage degradation at high current density. For complex fuel cell structures, SSC ionomers are preferably selected as proton conductors and binders for the CL to optimize the three-phase interface structure, which can provide satisfactory fuel cell performance.

Abstract:<p>To conduct simulations of transport properties within fuel cell materials 3D-data are required as input. For a functional simulation of flow and thermal characteristics the morphological features of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) materials must be well-defined. In this regard, the distribution of the distinct substances in the GDL, each of which is represented by a different parameter set, plays a decisive role. By means of synchrotron X-Ray computed tomography a fuel cell equipped with SGL® 28BC GDL material is recorded in 3D. The segmentation of the solid structural components and the identification of water agglomerations in the components are fulfilled by image processing techniques. This step is often realized using a lot of simplifications, like the reduction to only one or two different materials or idealized structural characteristics. In the presented work 8 different phases are defined according to the cell materials, which are the catalyst layer, the carbon fibers, the Teflon (PTFE)-binder, the micro porous layer (MPL), the flow field ribs, the pore spaces as well as the water in pore spaces of the GDL substrate and in the MPL. The image processing steps used for the classification of each voxel into these phases are described in detail in this work. Benefiting from this classification methodology, the macroscopic properties of the GDL materials such as water saturation, diffusivity, thermal and electrical conductivity can be obtained in simulations.</p>

Abstract:Catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells consist of platinum-group-metal nanocatalysts supported on carbon aggregates, forming a porous structure through which an ionomer network percolates. The local structural character of these heterogeneous assemblies is directly linked to the mass-transport resistances and subsequent cell performance losses; its three-dimensional visualization is therefore of interest. Herein we implement deep-learning-aided cryogenic transmission electron tomography for image restoration, and we quantitatively investigate the full morphology of various catalyst layers at the local-reaction-site scale. The analysis enables computation of metrics such as the ionomer morphology, coverage and homogeneity, location of platinum on the carbon supports, and platinum accessibility to the ionomer network, with the results directly compared and validated with experimental measurements. We expect that our findings and methodology for evaluating catalyst layer architectures will contribute towards linking the morphology to transport properties and overall fuel cell performance.

On the micro-, meso-, and macroporous structures of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell catalyst layers

Abstract:In this work, N(2) adsorption was employed to investigate the effects of carbon support, platinum, and ionomer loading on the microstructure of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell catalyst layers (CLs). Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and t-plot analyses of adsorption isotherms and pore-size distributions were used to study the microstructure of carbon supports, platinum/carbon catalyst powders, and three-component platinum/carbon/ionomer CLs. Two types of carbon supports were chosen for the investigation: Ketjen Black and Vulcan XC-72. CLs with a range of Nafion ionomer loadings were studied in order to evaluate the effect of an ionomer on the CL microstructure. Regions of adsorption were differentiated into micropores associated with the carbon primary particles (<2 nm), mesopores ascribed to the void space inside agglomerates (2-20 nm), and meso- to macroporous space inside aggregates of agglomerates (>50 nm). Ketjen Black was found to possess a significant fraction of micropores, 25% of the total pore volume, in contrast to Vulcan XC-72, for which the corresponding fraction of micropores was 15% of the total pore volume. The microstructure of the carbon support was found to be a significant factor in the formation of the microstructure in the three-component CLs, serving as a rigid porous framework for distribution of platinum and the ionomer. It was found that platinum particle deposition on Ketjen Black occurs in, or at the mouth of, the support's micropores, thus affecting its effective microporosity, whereas platinum deposition on Vulcan XC-72 did not significantly affect the support's microstructure. The codeposition of ionomer in the CL strongly influenced its porosity, covering pores < 20 nm, which are ascribed to the pores within the primary carbon particles (pore sizes < 2 nm) and to the pores within agglomerates of the particles (pore sizes of 2-20 nm).

Abstract:The microporous layer of gas diffusion layer plays an important role in water management of polymer exchange membrane fuel cells. Many factors affect the performance of the microporous layer, and these factors are interrelated. In this work, the orthogonal test method is used to study the effects of four factors including hydrophobic agent, the ratio of carbon powder to hydrophobic agent, carbon powder and microporous layer loading. Nine experiments with four factors and three levels are carried out. The effects of these different factors on the microporous layer are studied. The polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of fuel cells are tested and the scanning electron microscopy, contact angle and pore size distribution of MPL are characterized to prove that the conclusions obtained by orthogonal tests are correct and reliable. It is observed that carbon powder, hydrophobic agent and microporous layer loading have significant effects on the performance of fuel cell than that of the ratio of carbon powder to hydrophobic agent. These three factors mainly influence the cells performance by affecting the ohmic resistance and mass transfer resistance. This work provides a reference for the rapid optimization of microporous layer composition and hence improve the water management of the fuel cell.

Abstract:The effect of ionomer content on the microstructures and multiphase transport properties of cathode catalyst layer (CCL) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is investigated via combining molecular dynamics simulations and single-cell experiments. The maximum electrochemical surface area (ECSA) is gained when the Pt/C surface is entirely covered by ionomer due to the established proton transport paths network. As the ionomer content increases in the CCL models, the diffusion coefficient of H3O+ increases by 2 times, while the O2 diffusion coefficient shows decrease monotonously. Both charge transfer resistance and ohmic resistance exhibit U-shaped relationship to ionomer content. It is attributed to the coupling effect of increased ECSA, raised proton diffusion coefficient, and thickening CCL. The effect of ionomer on voltage loss in the low-to-high region is explained via a comprehensive understanding of structural interaction, transport dynamics, ECSA and impedance. It can guide the design of efficient three-phase boundary.
Unraveling the core of fuel cell performance: engineering the ionomer/catalyst interface

Abstract:The biggest obstacle to the widespread implementation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is their cost, primarily due to the use of platinum catalysts. The high intrinsic catalyst activity exhibited on a rotating disk electrode (RDE) is rarely realized in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which is a long-standing challenge for PEMFCs and a cause of low catalyst utilization. To translate the high RDE performance of a catalyst into a MEA, the design of an ideal ionomer/catalyst interface is proposed: a thin, conformal ionomer film covers the maximum surface of a Pt nanoparticle and thus simultaneously maximizes catalyst utilization, ( i.e. , high mass activity and electrochemically active surface area) and O 2 diffusion rate ( i.e. , high current density performance) without compromising proton conduction. Building such an interface is a long-standing challenge due to the lack of interaction between the ionomer and catalyst particles, resulting in large ionomer agglomerates and inhomogeneous ionomer coverage over the catalyst nanoparticle, with consequent poor fuel cell performance. In this work, this ionomer/catalyst interface has been engineered, utilizing the electrostatic attraction between positively charged catalyst and negatively charged ionomer particles in a catalyst ink and preserved in a solid catalyst layer. As a result, this interface leads to previously unachieved proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance in terms of both catalyst utilization (75% vs. 45%) and peak/rated power density ( i.e. , 1.430/0.930 W cm −2 , H 2 /air, cathode Pt loading: 0.1 mg Pt cm −2 ) for pure Pt catalysts, even better than those of Pt alloy catalysts. This work demonstrates the formation of an interface in the liquid phase (using ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering in combination with cryo-TEM, isothermal–titration–calorimetry) and the preservation of the interface in the solid catalyst layer (using TEM) and estimates the effective coverage and thickness of the ionomer film (using limiting current density, RDE and fuel cell performance).

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are being developed as alternative energy sources for both residential and automotive application. In order for this technology to become fully commercial, the reduction of cost and improvements in performance and durability of PEM fuel cells membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are still required. To address the requirement for further cost reduction the Pt loading of the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) needs to be reduced to 0.2- 0.1 mg/cm2 while maintaining high efficiency of Pt-utilization at high power densities. Consequently, it becomes increasingly important to not only develop new catalyst materials, but also optimize the 3D structural arrangement of the CCL components such as catalyst, ionomer and void space so that all critical functionalities can be achieved simultaneously and optimize PGM utilization. In general terms this entails to provide sites catalytically active for ORR, and to further provide transport to/these sites for the reactants O2, protons, electrons and products H2O and heat, respectively. In order to be able to design CCL structures that meet the performance and durability requirements, it is necessary to obtain a better understanding of structure versus performance relationships. Abstract:The catalyst layer (CL) in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells is one of the key components regulating the overall performance of the cell. In PEM fuel cells, there are two CLs having identical composition for hydrogen oxidation (HO) and oxygen reduction (OR) reactions. There are four phases inside the CL, namely: carbon, Pt particles, ionomer and voids. In this work, a micro-model of the cathode CL has been developed mathematically using finite volume (FV) technique to investigate the transport phenomena of reactants and product species, ions and electrons by incorporating the above stated phases at the cathode side only, due to the fact that the OR reactions are the rate limiting as compared to HO reaction. The 3D CL has been reconstructed based on a regularly distributed sphere’s method with dimensions 4.1 × 4.1 × 4.1 μm3. Platinum particles combined with carbon spheres (C/Pt) are regularly placed in the domain, an ionomer layer of a given thickness is extruded from the sphere surfaces. The C/Pt, ionomer and void distribution, as well as the triple phase boundary (TPB) are analysed and discussed. A microscopic model has been developed for water generation and species transport via Knudsen diffusion through the voids and the proton transport in the ionomer has been included here to aim for the rigorousness of the work. In addition, the electrochemical reactions have been simulated on the surface of Pt particles fulfilling the TBP conditions.
Microstructure and Macroscopic Rheology of Microporous Layer Nanoinks for PEM Fuel Cells

Abstract:The microporous layer (MPL) is of significance to the PEM fuel cell performance and durability through water management. It is essential to gain insights into the MPL nanoink, a critical state determining the resulting MPL porous structure and function. In this work, a comprehensive investigation of ink microstructure and rheology with different PTFE loadings and solvent compositions has been conducted from a theoretical and practical level. Two different CB/PTFE interaction modes (i.e., covering and bridging) were revealed and the latter dominates with increasing PTFE loading. It was found a PTFE loading of 30% produces homogeneous ink dispersion and best stability. Besides, larger aggregates were found with increased IPA/water ratio using cryo-SEM. Furthermore, rheological measurements revealed that less shear-thinning indicates stable inks. Combining the ink preparation and slot-die coating processes, an optimal formulation of 30% PTFE loading and 1/2 IPA/water weight ratio was proposed for a uniform ink dispersion.

Abstract:In a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell, the following degradation mechanisms are associated with the catalyst particles and their support: carbon support corrosion triggered by carbon and platinum oxidation, platinum dissolution with redeposition, and particle detachment with agglomeration. In this work, an electrochemical model for those degradation effects is presented as well as its coupling with a three‐dimensional computational fluid dynamics PEM fuel cell performance model. The overall model is used to calculate polarization curves and current density distributions of a PEM fuel cell in a fresh and aged state as well as the degradation process during an accelerated stress test with 30 000 voltage cycles. The obtained simulation results are compared to measurements on a three‐serpentine channel PEM fuel cell with an active area of 25 cm2 under various temperatures and humidities. The experimental data are obtained with a segmented test cell using respective degradation protocols and test conditions proposed by the United States Department of Energy. In addition to the temperature and humidity changes, the influence of geometry and material parameters on the degree of degradation and the resulting fuel cell performance is explored in detail.

Abstract:Morphology of polymer electrolytes membranes (PEM), e.g., Nafion, inside PEM fuel cell catalyst layers has significant impact on the electrochemical activity and transport phenomena that determine cell performance. In those regions, Nafion can be found as an ultra-thin film, coating the catalyst and the catalyst support surfaces. The impact of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of these surfaces on the structural formation of the films has not been sufficiently explored yet. Here, we report about Molecular Dynamics simulation investigation of the substrate effects on the ionomer ultra-thin film morphology at different hydration levels. We use a mean-field-like model we introduced in previous publications for the interaction of the hydrated Nafion ionomer with a substrate, characterized by a tunable degree of hydrophilicity. We show that the affinity of the substrate with water plays a crucial role in the molecular rearrangement of the ionomer film, resulting in completely different morphologies. Detailed structural description in different regions of the film shows evidences of strongly heterogeneous behavior. A qualitative discussion of the implications of our observations on the PEMFC catalyst layer performance is finally proposed.

Carbon-Nanowall Microporous Layers for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Abstract:The cathode microporous layer (MPL), as one of the key components of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM-FC), requires specialized carbon materials to ensure the two-phase flow and interfacial effects. In this respect, we designed a novel MPL based on highly hydrophobic carbon nanowalls (CNW). Employing plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition techniques directly on carbon paper, we produced high-quality microporous layers at a competitive yield-to-cost ratio with distinctive MPL properties: high porosity, good stability, considerable durability, high hydrophobicity, and substantial conductivity. The specific morphological and structural properties were determined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Thermo-gravimetric analysis was employed to study the nanostructures' thermal stability and contact angle measurements were performed on the CNW substrate to study the hydrophobic character. Platinum ink, serving as a fuel cell catalyst, was sprayed directly onto the MPLs and incorporated in the FC assembly by hot-pressing against a polymeric membrane to form the membrane-electrode assembly and gas diffusion layers. Single-fuel-cell testing, at moderate temperature and humidity, revealed improved power performance comparable to industrial quality membrane assemblies (500 mW cm-2 mg-1 of cathodic Pt load at 80 °C and 80% RH), with elevated working potential (0.99 V) and impeccable fuel crossover for a low-cost system.
