Abstract:Accurate predictions with quantifiable uncertainty are essential to many practical turbulent flow applications in engineering, geophysics, and astrophysics exhibiting extreme geometrical complexity and broad ranges of length and time scales. In contexts of interest, such as inertial confinement fusion and supernova implosions, mixing of materials by the small scales of turbulent motion is a critical element, and we are interested in detailed understanding of the consequences of material interpenetration, flow instabilities, and mixing arising from perturbations at the material interfaces. Simulation modeling and predictability issues are revisited for under-resolved material mixing driven by under-resolved velocity fields, and then also in conjunction with under-resolved initial conditions. Implications for turbulent mixing big data generation, reduction, and organization are discussed in this context.
