Abstract:This article is a result of the collaboration of two Qing historians, one from China and the other from the US. Having exchanged ideas, the two reached an agreement on the rise of New Qing History over the past two decades. The article breaks it down in three parts: (i) Analysis of the intellectual background of New Qing History; (ii) Discussion of several key questions raised by New Qing History and analysis of how and why they become controversial in historical communities in China; and (iii) Discussion of the significance of New Qing History from the perspective of global history on both methodological and theoretical levels. The authors believe that it is imperative for Chinese scholars, not only the Qing historians, to take stock of the issues raised by New Qing History. These issues reflect concerns of the historical communities both in and outside China and have far-reaching influences and implications across many fields of history in the twenty-first century.

Beyond the Jinwenand the Transformation from Classics to Historiography in Modern China

Abstract:In the Qing Dynasty, the dispute between Jinwenand Guwen was a part of the disputes of Sinology between Neo-Confucianism, and the dispute evolved into a pivot of political and academic transformation in the late Qing and early Republic of China.With a view to reforming the ritual system by returning to the ancient political system, the movement which reexamine Chinese studies from disciplinary perspectives and discussed ancient history focused on differentiating and analyzing classics documents in order to eliminate the rationality of the political and educational system in Confucian ethics and rites.In the modern time, the New Culture generation of scholars promoted the historiography of classics.However, it is necessary to further probe into the academic division within traditional Chinese scholarship, and to study how the academic methods, issues and ideas inherited by scholars of different schools were developed and transcended by scholars of the Republic of China, leading to a pluralistic path in response to the integration of Chinese and western civilizations.In the 1930s, the historiography of classics had become a foregone conclusion.How to transcend the dispute of Jinwen and Guwen and deal with the ideas, methods and materials of classics in the way of history became the focus of the academic circle, thus opening a new round of controversy between Jinwen and Guwen.Scholars such as Qian Xuantong, Gu Jiegang and Meng Wentong called it ″Beyond the Jinwen″, and this transcendence and transformation became the starting point for scholars to practice new academic studies.In the academic circle of the Republic of China, there were different ways to inherit and surpass traditional Confucian classics.In the historical concept of the Guwen, the Six Classics were regarded as the ancient political documents, and the ancient history was separated from the spirit of Confucianism.The New Culture generation of scholars aimed to construct a course of internal cultural evolution course by means of historiography so as to change the study of classics into historiography, and construct the framework of Chinese cultural history without being limited by the Confucian re-creation of Chinese standard culture.The scholar Hu Shi put forward the idea of ″returning to Liao Ping″ to review the rationality of Liao Ping's division of Jinwen and Guwen by the system of rites.The scholar Qian Mu traced the academic evolution of Qin and Han Dynasties by historical facts, solved the dispute between Jinwen and Guwen, and was opposed to forced similarities and differences in the classics.Qian Xuantong and Gu Jiegang took a perspective of explicatory and analytical study, further historicized the issue of Jinwenand Guwen, and advocated going beyond the dispute over Jinwenand Guwen.Gu Jiegang advocated that Beyond the Jinwenshould absorb the criticism of Neo-Confucianism and the textual research of Sinology, so as to get rid of the old and bring forth the new, and clarify the evolution of Chinese history and culture.Based on Jinwen, Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng emphasized the dynamic interaction of Classics, institution, and historical facts, and examine the sciences from a Chinese-studies perspective.They attempted to carry forward the New Confucianism of Qin and Han Dynasties to establish the core values of Chinese civilization and construct the dynamic relationship between Confucianism and historical evolution.They started the Confucianism-oriented historiography in the modern academic context.By examining the historical context in which various schools of thought have transcended the debate between Jinwenand Guwen, and by integrating methods and objectives, we can not only examine the complex connotation of the transformation of modern classics and history, but also reflect on and enrich the methods and significance of current historical studies, in order to turn historical studies into the source of the subjectivity of civilization.
The Manchu Empire or The Qing Empire? - A Critical Review on ‘New Qing History’ -

Abstract:This paper examines recent English publications regarding Qing history, especially focusing on the works of Mark Elliott and Pamela Crossley, the two leading scholars in the field. “New Qing History” – a name for recent scholarship on Qing history, which has shared common interests in Manchu language materials and Inner Asian tradition in the Qing empire – has been widely discussed and read in Korea. This group of scholars has challenged the theory of sinicization, and instead highlighted important roles of non-Han people who have long been considered as “inferior barbarians,” especially the Manchus and Mongols, in Chinese history. There are also some disagreements found among these scholars, most notably regarding the question of how to understand ethnicity in the Qing history. Mark Elliott argues that Manchu ethnic identity had played a decisive role in the formation of the Qing state, and the distinctive cultural traits of the Manchu people – or the Manchuness in his word – had remained throughout the dynasty. Pamela Crossley refutes Elliott’s idea that many elements of the Manchuness, such as frugality and martial skills, were in fact products of the Qing imperial ideology. She addresses that the Manchu identity were constantly transformed by the Qing court’s interests. If Elliott explains the Qing history as the Manchu empire, Crossley offers the Qing empire, which included not only the Manchus but other imperial constituencies, such as the Mongol, Tibetan, and Uyghur. Understandings of these divergences in “New Qing History” help examine the ways in which the Qing made its relationships with neighboring countries. As long as the Qing had been transformed itself, its foreign policies changed as well. If the Qing court modified the history of the Manchus and the Mongols, so did to the Choson. As such, various questions raised in “New Qing History” can shed new light on the understanding of the Qing and Choson relationship.

New Qing History School: The Manchu Turn in American Historiography

Abstract:The article gives a detailed overview of modern trends in the American Manchu studies. Special attention is given to the New Qing Histor y historiographic school, which during the 1980s and 1990s criticized the Sinicization theory on entirely new levels of theorizing during the 1980s and the 1990s. Despite existing differences in views, the experts share common approaches to the Qing studies: importance of the Manchu sources, comparison of the Qing dynasty with the other Early Modern empires of Eurasia, refusal to identify the Manchu regime with China and considering China only as one of the parts of the Empire, close attention to the identities issue in the Qing empire. This article analyzes the ideas of such prominent American experts in Manchu studies as Pamela Kyle Crossley and Mark C. Elliott, as well as some concepts of their teachers and predecessors. The central position of the New Qing History school is a statement of the importance of the Manchu factor in the functioning of the Qing state. The article also gives the critical response of supporters of the Sinicization theory to the theses prevailing among the American scholars. They express doubts about the dichotomy claimed by the New Qing History scholars between Manchu and Chinese identities. In their opinion, the process of sinicization includes not only Chinese but also other minor forms of identities, so the Manchus could preserve their own identity but still think of themselves as part of the Chinese civilization. Such criticism undoubtedly has common points with the modern Chinese political concept of the «Chinese family of the united nations». The author believes both approaches should be taken into consideration when researching Manchu and Chinese sources as part of the Qing studies.

Reform of the Traditional Historiography and Compilation of the New History:the Purport of A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Social Transformations in Chinese Societies

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to explore various tensions related to the diffusion and reception of the New Qing History (NQH) in China, and more specifically, it aims at underlying a recurrent tension within the core of this debate, between a Global and a Nationalist historical narrative. Design/methodology/approach The author’s focus is to analyze various texts published in China between 2006 and 2018. Findings The author argues that the intensity of the current debate is partly related on the one hand, to the fact that NQH undermines various aspects of China’s Nationalist teleology and territorial claims and, on the other hand, to the basic difficulty of accepting the coexistence of various historical representations that are risking to weaken contemporary’s justifications of its rising schemes. Originality/value The text presents an original reading of some important issues raised by the NQH debate.

Abstract:The rise of the "New Qing History" school in the United States has opened new vistas for the study of Qing history. The school challenged the long-received idea of "sinification" in evaluating the dynasty and the non-Han Chinese regimes in general. It proposed to analyze the success and failure of Manchu rule in China from the Manchu perspective and focus on how Manchu rulers sought to maintain the Manchu ethnic identity throughout Qing history. All this could be useful for Chinese scholars of Qing history to explore new issues in their studies.

This article intends to show how several factors contribute to the shaping of historical research in China today. Abstract:Since 2003, the Qing History Committee has been allocating huge funds to digitize a total number of 34 archival holdings and to build a password‐protected archival database of over 1.5 million files. Because the database is currently only open to researchers who are affiliated with the Qing history project, international scholars might not be aware of its existence. This article intends to offer an overview of the scope and progress of the digitization works funded by the Qing History Committee and the structure and content of the database. We would also like to share our experience of using this database to organize archival files.

Abstract:From the Qing period, Chinese scholars have taken the new history as the supreme realm that they pursued for all their life time, but the ways of understanding and practicing the new history were different. The early new history was always taken as the object that should be broken, when the latercomers surpassed the formers, and then the new one was invented. In the course of pursuing the more new history, the style of the Chinese history is completely changed, but it is not so easy to write a representative work that can exceed the traditional history. The precondition of innovation is to review the old material, so the first job of historians is to master the basis and cardinal principle of history, to get beyond the Chinese and the Western, the new and the old, avoiding the mistakes that draw a conclusion from incomplete data, and take the unorthodox ways as new ones. In doing so, the historians will never walk back to an old way, or diametrically oppose to each other when finding a new way to understand the past.

Abstract:By distinguishing the “new learning” from the “old learning,” scholars made a distinction between “Chinese historiography” and the “Western historiography” in the late Qing dynasty. The introduction of Western historiography into China in such a context played a role in the changes in Chinese historiography. In attempts to make academic learning useful in governing the state, historiography was brought center stage. In the process of “borrowing from the West,” historiography was put forward as part of Western learning. Chinese historians began to concern themselves with such questions as the meaning and domain of historical study, which obviously take historical study as an independent discipline. However, as the domain of historical study expands, its autonomy as an independent discipline is open to question. That shows that the process of establishing historiography as a modern academic discipline is yet to be accomplished in China.
