Abstract:Holograms show great potential in optical or acoustical waves applications due to their capability to reconstruct images. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to realize acoustic holograms based on an ultrathin metasurface with arbitrary phase control ability. Compared with the conventional imaging method, e.g., concave mirror, which has a bulky size and limited imaging effects, the acoustic metasurface comprises a single layer of Helmholtz-like elements that can largely reduce the complexity of production. With this ultrathin reflective metasurface, acoustic holograms are constructed through a subtle structure design for single and multiple focal imaging, while the potential thermoviscous effects are minimized. We further demonstrate that the metasurface has the capability of arbitrary phase control in a certain frequency range, where the reflected phase dispersion is linear. Our proposed ultrathin metasurface holograms would be very useful in numerous applications, such as acoustic sensing, medical imaging, and so on.
Compact holographic sound fields enable rapid one-step assembly of matter in 3D

Abstract:Acoustic waves exert forces when they interact with matter. Shaping ultrasound fields precisely in 3D thus allows control over the force landscape and should permit particulates to fall into place to potentially form whole 3D objects in "one shot." This is promising for rapid prototyping, most notably biofabrication, since conventional methods are typically slow and apply mechanical or chemical stress on biological cells. Here, we realize the generation of compact holographic ultrasound fields and demonstrate the one-step assembly of matter using acoustic forces. We combine multiple holographic fields that drive the contactless assembly of solid microparticles, hydrogel beads, and biological cells inside standard labware. The structures can be fixed via gelation of the surrounding medium. In contrast to previous work, this approach handles matter with positive acoustic contrast and does not require opposing waves, supporting surfaces or scaffolds. We envision promising applications of 3D holographic ultrasound fields in tissue engineering and additive manufacturing.

Abstract:A programmable acoustic holography approach is demonstrated, where multiple discrete or continuously variable acoustic patterns can be generated. This approach encodes multiple images on a holographic phase plate, where the desired field is generated by modifying the sound velocity of the intervening fluid medium. This acoustic holographic approach has broad potential in microfluidics, cell/tissue engineering, real‐time sensing, and medical ultrasound. Acoustic holography offers the ability to generate designed acoustic fields to manipulate microscale objects. However, the static nature or large aperture sizes of 3D printed acoustic holographic phase plates limits the ability to rapidly alter generated fields. In this work, a programmable acoustic holography approach is demonstrated by which multiple discrete or continuously variable acoustic targets can be created. Here, the holographic phase plate encodes multiple images, where the desired field is produced by modifying the sound speed of an intervening fluid media. Its flexibility is demonstrated in generating various acoustic patterns, including continuous line segments, discrete letters and numbers, using this method as a sound speed indicator and fluid identification tool. This programmable acoustic holography approach has the advantages of generating reconfigurable and designed acoustic fields, with broad potential in microfluidics, cell/tissue engineering, real‐time sensing, and medical ultrasound.

Abstract:Confining acoustic fields in subwavelength volumes is of fundamental interest in wave-energy harvesting and high-resolution imaging. Phononic crystals have been shown to be capable of superfocusing but are highly limited by their very large dimensions. Acoustic metasurfaces can yield similar functionality with unit cells significantly smaller than the wavelength. However, they are studied mostly under effective medium theory and cannot manipulate evanescent waves directly to control near-field focusing. Here, we use a microscopic approach to study acoustic metasurfaces for subdiffraction focusing of reflected waves, which consist of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced grooves. We further show that the focusing pattern can be tailored by the designer. To validate the effectiveness of our scheme, two representative metasurfaces are designed theoretically, proved numerically, and confirmed experimentally for subdiffraction sound focusing with different patterns. We hope that our approach can work as a general guideline to shape near-field signals in the broad field of acoustics.
Acoustic holography using composite metasurfaces

Abstract:Acoustic holography has emerged as a revolutionary technique to reconstruct the desired wavefronts of sound fields. Traditional acoustic holography typically relies on arrays of discrete sound emitters independently driven by sophisticated circuits to generate the required phase and amplitude profile. Recently, we witnessed growing efforts to conquer the realm of acoustic metasurfaces as a possible platform to reconstruct computer-generated holograms due to their advantages in manipulating sound waves with a well-controlled phase and/or amplitude. In this article, we review the latest efforts to explore an acoustic metasurface hologram in transmission-type and reflection-type systems, where we discuss how artificial meta-pixels appear as highly useful ingredients to tailor the flow of sound and transform a conventional incident wave into a desired arbitrary-complex wavefront in the far field. We summarize the latest advancements from their design principles to versatile functional applications, and some future research directions are also provided.

Abstract:Acoustic holography has extensive possibilities in acoustic sensing, acoustic illusion, contactless particle manipulation, and medical imaging. Based on coating unit cells and perforated panels, an acoustic composite metasurface is constructed with a decoupled modulation of phase and amplitude, which has been used to design acoustic holography. This proposal not only has lower complexity than conventional acoustic holography of active arrays due to the avoidance of complex structures and circuits but also provides more flexibility than acoustic holography based on the acoustic metasurface with phase-only modulation benefitting from the efficient decoupled modulation of phase and amplitude. We have further demonstrated three acoustic holographic applications, such as multi-directional transmission, multi-focal focusing, and holographic imaging. Due to the low complexity and the great flexibility, this proposal has potential to achieve the high-quality holograms with high information content, fine resolution, and large scale. Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces offer unique capabilities to steer and direct acoustic fields, though these are generally comprised of complex 3D structures, complicating their fabrication and applicability to higher frequencies. Here, we demonstrate an ultrathin metasurface approach utilizing planarized micropillars in a discretized phase array. This sub‐wavelength metasurface is easily produced via a single‐step etching process and is suitable for MHz‐scale applications. We further demonstrate the flexibility of this metasurface approach in the production of complex acoustic patterns via acoustic holography. This metasurface approach, with models used to predict their behavior, has broad potential in applications where robust, high‐frequency acoustic manipulation is required, including microfluidics, cell/tissue engineering and medical ultrasound. Abstract:Spatial modulation of acoustic wave has demonstrated theoretical and experimental importance in the field of acoustics, with wide applications such as in medical ultrasound and particle manipulation. However, the existing means for acoustic modulation have to rely on the acoustic metasurfaces providing only pure phase modulation or active element arrays with complicated fabrications and limited spatial resolutions. In this work, we present the design, numerical simulation, and experimental demonstration of a spatial acoustic modulator (SAM) capable of manipulating the phase and amplitude profiles separately and continuously, offering the possibility to address the above challenges by enabling arbitrarily complex acoustical patterns. The proposed structure has a simple configuration with planar profile, high efficiency of spatial modulation, and deep-subwavelength unit scale, ensuring easy and low-cost fabrication and nearly-continuous wavefront manipulation. The designed SAM is used to project high-quality acoustic holograms both theoretically and experimentally to demonstrate its wave-steering functionality. Our metastructure-based holographic projector with simplicity and extreme acoustic performance advances the capability of spatial acoustic modulation, and have various applications in places where the conventional techniques would lead to complexity and limited ability.

Abstract:Acoustic holographic rendering in complete analogy with optical holography are useful for various applications, ranging from multi-focal lensing, multiplexed sensing and synthesizing three-dimensional complex sound fields. Conventional approaches rely on a large number of active transducers and phase shifting circuits. In this paper we show that by using passive metamaterials as subwavelength pixels, holographic rendering can be achieved without cumbersome circuitry and with only a single transducer, thus significantly reducing system complexity. Such metamaterial-based holograms can serve as versatile platforms for various advanced acoustic wave manipulation and signal modulation, leading to new possibilities in acoustic sensing, energy deposition and medical diagnostic imaging.

Abstract:Acoustic holograms have promising applications in sound-field reconstruction, particle manipulation, ultrasonic haptics and therapy. This paper reports on the theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigation of multiplexed acoustic holograms at both audio and ultrasonic frequencies via a rationally designed transmission-type acoustic metamaterial. The proposed meta-hologram is composed of two Fabry-Perot resonant channels per unit cell, which enables the simultaneous modulation of the transmitted amplitude and phase at two desired frequencies. In contrast to conventional acoustic metamaterial-based holograms, the design strategy proposed here, provides a new degree of freedom (frequency) that can actively tailor holograms that are otherwise completely passive and hence significantly enhances the information encoded in acoustic metamaterials. To demonstrate the multiplexed acoustic metamaterial, we first show the projection of two different high-quality meta-holograms at 14 kHz and 17 kHz, with the patterns of the letters, N and S. We then demonstrate two-channel ultrasound focusing and annular beams generation for the incident ultrasonic frequencies of 35 kHz and 42.5 kHz. These multiplexed acoustic meta-holograms offer a technical advance to tackle the rising challenges in the fields of acoustic metamaterials, architectural acoustics, and medical ultrasound.

Abstract:Acoustic holography technology is widely used in the field of ultrasound due to its capability to achieve complex acoustic fields. The traditional acoustic holography method based on single-phase holograms is limited due to its inability to complete acoustic field control with high dynamics and accuracy. Here, we propose a method for constructing an acoustic holographic model, introducing an ultrasonic array to provide dynamic amplitude control degrees of freedom, and combining the dynamically controllable ultrasonic array and high-precision acoustic hologram to achieve the highest acoustic field accuracy and dynamic range. This simulation method has been proven to be applicable to both simple linear patterns and complex surface patterns. Moreover, it is possible to reconstruct the degree of freedom of the target plane amplitude effectively and achieve a breakthrough in high information content. This high-efficiency acoustic field control capability has potential applications in ultrasound imaging, acoustic tweezers, and neuromodulation.

Abstract:This paper reported a method for designing monolithic acoustic holograms with consideration of both amplitude and phase modulation, which can be used for multifocal point beam forming by a single element ultrasonic transducer in the frequency of megahertz range. Mask-image-projection-based stereolithography 3D printing technology was induced to manufacture the complex hologram with a pixel resolution of 25 μm. A nine foci pattern and a letter U pattern acoustic field shown by a 2 MHz transducer and holograms were designed to validate the proposed designing method. Both the hydrophone testing and the simulation results indicated that the holograms designed by our method could form beam patterns accurately in the expected position.

Abstract:Recent advances in high-speed acoustic holography have enabled levitation-based volumetric displays with tactile and audio sensations. However, current approaches do not compute sound scattering of objects' surfaces; thus, any physical object inside can distort the sound field. Here, we present a fast computational technique that allows high-speed multipoint levitation even with arbitrary sound-scattering surfaces and demonstrate a volumetric display that works in the presence of any physical object. Our technique has a two-step scattering model and a simplified levitation solver, which together can achieve more than 10,000 updates per second to create volumetric images above and below static sound-scattering objects. The model estimates transducer contributions in real time by reformulating the boundary element method for acoustic holography, and the solver creates multiple levitation traps. We explain how our technique achieves its speed with minimum loss in the trap quality and illustrate how it brings digital and physical content together by demonstrating mixed-reality interactive applications.

Abstract:Acoustic holograms have been used widely to generate desired acoustic fields. Following the rapid development of 3D printing technology, the use of holographic lenses has become an efficient method to produce acoustic fields with high resolution and low cost. In this paper, we demonstrate a technique to modulate the amplitude and phase of ultrasonic waves simultaneously using a holographic method with high transmission efficiency and high accuracy. On this basis, we generate an Airy beam with high propagation invariance. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method when compared with the conventional acoustic holographic method. Finally, we design a sinusoidal curve with a phase gradient and a constant pressure amplitude and realize transport of a particle on a water surface along a curve.
Holograms to focus arbitrary ultrasonic fields through the skull

Abstract:We report 3D-printed acoustic holographic lenses for the formation of ultrasonic fields of complex spatial distribution inside the skull. Using holographic lenses, we experimentally, numerically and theoretically produce acoustic beams whose spatial distribution matches target structures of the central nervous system. In particular, we produce three types of targets of increasing complexity. First, a set of points are selected at the center of both right and left human hippocampi. Experiments using a skull phantom and 3D printed acoustic holographic lenses show that the corresponding bifocal lens simultaneously focuses acoustic energy at the target foci, with good agreement between theory and simulations. Second, an arbitrary curve is set as the target inside the skull phantom. Using time-reversal methods the holographic beam bends following the target path, in a similar way as self-bending beams do in free space. Finally, the right human hippocampus is selected as a target volume. The focus of the corresponding holographic lens overlaps with the target volume in excellent agreement between theory in free-media, and experiments and simulations including the skull phantom. The precise control of focused ultrasound into the central nervous system is mainly limited due to the strong phase aberrations produced by refraction and attenuation of the skull. Using the present method, the ultrasonic beam can be focused not only at a single point but overlapping one or various target structures simultaneously using low-cost 3D-printed acoustic holographic lens. The results open new paths to spread incoming biomedical ultrasound applications including blood-brain barrier opening or neuromodulation.

Abstract:Holography can provide the desired wavefront phase and/or amplitude for imaging, particle manipulation, bacteria trapping, and cell patterning in optics and acoustics. However, previous work on acoustic holography is mostly based on local design optimization, either using active control of the sound source or relying on the structural design to provide the desired wavefront. Achieving precise control over the acoustic field remains a significant challenge. Here, we realize refined single-plane symmetric binary amplitude, asymmetric intensity gradient amplitude, and bi-objective hologram through the non-local holographic imaging theory that considers the acoustic coupling of structural units in detail. By taking into account the self-radiation and mutual radiation between many small units on a plate of well-designed thickness, as well as the transmission through the plate's apertures, we can effectively regulate the sound field behind the plate. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through numerical simulations and experiments, showcasing a circle, a black hole, and a bi-objective with a circle and a square hologram. Notably, the acoustic black hole hologram precisely reconstructs the intensity gradient distribution at two bright spots. This non-local holographic imaging theory is valuable for the fine-intensity regulation of the sound field and is expected to be applied in ultrasound diagnosis and treatment, medical imaging, and other fields.

Abstract:How to manipulate acoustic waves through thinner structures is always a challenging problem due to the linear proportional relationship between the structural thickness and the acoustic wavelength. Here, we show the possibility of breaking this relationship by the strong-coupling effects of the radiated waves on the zero-thickness two-dimensional perforated plane, rather than reducing the thickness of the three-dimensional structure by the resonance mechanism of the cavity structure. The strong-coupling effects can be achieved and regulated by the self and mutual radiation between acoustic waves from different holes in the zero-thickness plane. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by implementing acoustic focusing and holography. Our work introduces a different perspective for manipulating acoustic waves and will enable the application of ultrathin acoustic devices.
