Abstract:In recent years, ethical issues in the networking field are getting moreimportant. In particular, there is a consistent debate about how Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should collect and treat network measurements. This kind of information, such as flow records, carry interesting knowledge from multiple points of view: research, traffic engineering and e-commerce can benefit from measurements retrievable through inspection of network traffic. Nevertheless, in some cases they can carry personal information about the users exposed to monitoring, and so generates several ethical issues. Modern web is very different from the one we could experience few years ago; web services converged to few protocols (i.e., HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and HTTPS) and always bigger share of encrypted traffic. The aim of this work is to provide an insight about which information is still visible to ISPs in the modern web and to what extent it carries personal information. We show ethical issues deriving by this new situation and provide general guidelines and best-practices to cope with the collection of network traffic measurements.

Abstract:Background: Smart-home technologies, comprising environmental sensors, wearables and video are attracting interest in home healthcare delivery. Development of such technology is usually justified on the basis of the technology's potential to increase the autonomy of people living with long-term conditions. Studies of the ethics of smart-homes raise concerns about privacy, consent, social isolation and equity of access. Few studies have investigated the ethical perspectives of smart-home engineers themselves. By exploring the views of engineering researchers in a large smart-home project, we sought to contribute to dialogue between ethics and the engineering community. Methods: Either face-to-face or using Skype, we conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 20 early- and mid-career smart-home researchers from a multi-centre smart-home project, who were asked to describe their own experience and to reflect more broadly about ethical considerations that relate to smart-home design. With participants' consent, interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using a thematic approach. Results: Two overarching themes emerged: in 'Privacy', researchers indicated that they paid close attention to negative consequences of potential unauthorised information sharing in their current work. However, when discussing broader issues in smart-home design beyond the confines of their immediate project, researchers considered physical privacy to a lesser extent, even though physical privacy may manifest in emotive concerns about being watched or monitored. In 'Choice', researchers indicated they often saw provision of choice to end-users as a solution to ethical dilemmas. While researchers indicated that choices of end-users may need to be restricted for technological reasons, ethical standpoints that restrict choice were usually assumed and embedded in design. Conclusions: The tractability of informational privacy may explain the greater attention that is paid to it. However, concerns about physical privacy may reduce acceptability of smart-home technologies to future end-users. While attention to choice suggests links with privacy, this may misidentify the sources of privacy and risk unjustly burdening end-users with problems that they cannot resolve. Separating considerations of choice and privacy may result in more satisfactory treatment of both. Finally, through our engagement with researchers as participants this study demonstrates the relevance of (bio)ethics as a critical partner to smart-home engineering.

Abstract:Sensors, including accelerometer-based and electronic adherence monitoring devices, have transformed health data collection. Sensors allow for unobtrusive, real-time sampling of health behaviors that relate to psychological health, including sleep, physical activity, and medication-taking. These technical strengths have captured scholarly attention, with far less discussion about the level of human touch involved in implementing sensors. Researchers face several subjective decision points when collecting health data via sensors, with these decisions posing ethical concerns for users and the public at large. Using examples from pediatric sleep, physical activity, and medication adherence research, we pose critical ethical questions, practical dilemmas, and guidance for implementing health-based sensors. We focus on youth given that they are often deemed the ideal population for digital health approaches but have unique technology-related vulnerabilities and preferences. Ethical considerations are organized according to Belmont principles of respect for persons (e.g., when sensor-based data are valued above the subjective lived experiences of youth and their families), beneficence (e.g., with sensor data management and sharing), and justice (e.g., with sensor access and acceptability among minoritized pediatric populations). Recommendations include the need to increase transparency about the extent of subjective decision making with sensor data management. Without greater attention to the human factors involved in sensor research, ethical risks could outweigh the scientific promise of sensors, thereby negating their potential role in improving child health and care. Abstract:Amid rapid technological advancements in the contemporary digital landscape, the integrity of data management significantly influences organizational trustworthiness. Compliance with ethical norms and concepts is critical for maintaining confidentiality in language and speech technologies, emphasizing ethical considerations in the collection and use of personal data. Building trust in new technologies, including language and speech technologies, requires timely and responsible handling of personal data. This study aims to evaluate the ethical norms and associated risks involved in the process of collecting personal data. It includes an examination of core ethical principles, such as consent, transparency, fairness, and accountability, and how compliance with these principles can be ensured. The research employs a mixed methodology, incorporating literature review and ethical analysis. Ethical considerations are a significant part of the development and deployment of language and speech technologies. This includes respecting user privacy and transparency, eliminating algorithmic bias to enhance trust, and encouraging responsible innovation. Additionally, adherence to regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA is essential for protecting user rights. This study provides an overview of the ethical benefits and decisions associated with data management practices within speech technologies. It highlights the relevance of ethical principles in the development of language and speech technologies. By recognizing the importance of confidentiality, responsibility, and justice, this approach fosters trust and contributes to the responsible development and proper use of these transformative technologies. The findings emphasize the need for further research, regulatory supervision, and proactive ethical practices to navigate the digital era.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Summary</h2><p>Ambient intelligence is increasingly finding applications in health-care settings, such as helping to ensure clinician and patient safety by monitoring staff compliance with clinical best practices or relieving staff of burdensome documentation tasks. Ambient intelligence involves using contactless sensors and contact-based wearable devices embedded in health-care settings to collect data (eg, imaging data of physical spaces, audio data, or body temperature), coupled with machine learning algorithms to efficiently and effectively interpret these data. Despite the promise of ambient intelligence to improve quality of care, the continuous collection of large amounts of sensor data in health-care settings presents ethical challenges, particularly in terms of privacy, data management, bias and fairness, and informed consent. Navigating these ethical issues is crucial not only for the success of individual uses, but for acceptance of the field as a whole.</p>

Abstract:Social networks are becoming pervasive in todays world. Millions of people worldwide are involved in different form of online networking, with Facebook being one of the most popular sites. Online networks allow individuals to connect with friends and family, and share their private information. One of the reasons for the popularity of virtual communities is the perception of benefits received from the community. However, problems with privacy and security of the users information may also occur, especially when members are not aware of the risks of posting sensitive information on a social network. Members of social networking sites could become victims of identity theft, physical or online stalking and embarrassment as a consequence of malicious manipulation of their profiles data. Although networking sites often provide features for privacy settings, a high percentage of users neither know nor change their privacy preferences. This situation brings to consideration about many important aspects of social network privacy, such as what are the privacy issues in social networks? what are common privacy threats or risks in social networks? how privacy can be measured in a meaningful way? and how to empower users with knowledge to make correct decisions when selecting privacy settings? The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we discuss potential risks and attacks of social network site users privacy. Second, we present the measurement and quantification of the social privacy, along with solutions for privacy protection.

Abstract:Will sensor-based exposure assessment be the future in workplace settings? Static instruments with embedded sensors are already applied to monitor levels of dangerous substances-in the context of acute health effects-at critical locations. However, with wearable, lightweight, miniaturized (low-cost) sensors developing quickly, much more is possible with sensors in relation to exposure assessment. Sensors can be applied in the work environment, on machines, or on employees and may include sensors that measure chemical exposures, but also sensors or other technologies that collect contextual information to support the exposure measurements. Like every technology it also has downsides. Sensors collect data on individuals that, depending on the purpose, need to be shared with others (e.g. health, safety and environment manager). One can imagine that people are afraid of misuse. To explore possible ethical and privacy issues that may come along with the introduction of sensors in the workplace, we organized a workshop with stakeholders (n = 32) to discuss three possible sensor-based scenarios in a structured way around five themes: purpose, efficacy, intrusiveness, proportionality, and fairness. The main conclusion of the discussions was that stakeholders currently see benefits in using sensors for applied targeted studies (short periods, clear reasons). In order to find acceptance for the implementation of sensors, all individuals affected by the sensors or its data need to be involved in the decisions on the purpose and application of sensors. Possible negative side effects need to be discussed and addressed. Continuous sensor-based monitoring of workers currently appears to be a bridge too far for the participants of this workshop.

Ethical and Privacy Considerations with Location Based Data Research

Abstract:Networking research, especially focusing on human mobility, has evolved significantly in the last two decades and now relies on collection and analyzing larger datasets. The increasing sizes of datasets are enabled by larger automated efforts to collect data as well as by scalable methods to analyze and unveil insights, which was not possible many years ago. However, this fast expansion and innovation in human-centric research often comes at a cost of privacy or ethics. In this work, we review a vast corpus of scientific work on human mobility and how ethics and privacy were considered. We reviewed a total of 118 papers, including 149 datasets on individual mobility. We demonstrate that these ever growing collections, while enabling new and insightful studies, have not all consistently followed a pre-defined set of guidelines regarding acceptable practices in data governance as well as how their research was communicated. We conclude with a series of discussions on how data, privacy and ethics could be dealt within our community.

Abstract:Drawing on the authors' own ethnographic research, this article discusses the importance of developing polymedia literacy as a key step toward ethical online research on social networking sites (SNS). Polymedia literacy entails the ability to critically analyze the vast landscape of SNS, their affordances, and users' social motivations for choosing specific SNS for their interactions. Internet researchers face several ethical challenges, including issues of informed consent, "public" and "private" online spaces, and data protection. Even when research ethics committees waive the need for a formal ethics approval process, researchers of online spaces need to ensure that their studies are conducted and presented in an ethical and responsible manner. This is particularly important in research contexts that pertain to vulnerable populations in online communities.

Abstract:Spatial approaches to epidemiological research with big social media data provide tremendous opportunities to study the relationship between the socio-ecological context where these data are generated and health indicators of interest. Such research poses a number of ethical challenges, particularly in relation to issues such as privacy, informed consent, data security, and storage. While these issues have received considerable attention by researchers in relation to research for physical health purposes in the past 10 years, there have been few efforts to consider the ethical challenges of conducting mental health research, particularly with geo-referenced social media data. The aim of this article is to identify strengths and limitations of current recommendations to address the specific ethical issues of geo-referenced tweets for mental health research. We contribute to the ongoing debate on the ethical implications of big data research and also provide recommendations to researchers and stakeholders alike on how to tackle them, with a specific focus on the use of geo-referenced data for mental health research purposes. With increasing awareness of data privacy and confidentiality issues (even for non-spatial social media data) it becomes crucial to establish professional standards of conduct so that compliance with ethical standards of conducting research with health-related social media data can be prioritized and easily assessed.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer perception technologies (e.g., digital phenotyping and affective computing) promise to transform clinical approaches to personalized care in psychiatry and beyond by offering more objective measures of emotional states and behavior, enabling precision treatment, diagnosis, and symptom monitoring. At the same time, passive and continuous nature by which they often collect data from patients in non-clinical settings raises ethical issues related to privacy and self-determination. Little is known about how such concerns may be exacerbated by the integration of neural data, as parallel advances in computer perception, AI, and neurotechnology enable new insights into subjective states. Here, we present findings from a multi-site NCATS-funded study of ethical considerations for translating computer perception into clinical care and contextualize them within the neuroethics and neurorights literatures. Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews with patients ( n = 20), caregivers ( n = 20), clinicians ( n = 12), developers ( n = 12), and clinician developers ( n = 2) regarding their perspective toward using PC in clinical care. Transcripts were analyzed in MAXQDA using Thematic Content Analysis. Results: Stakeholder groups voiced concerns related to (1) perceived invasiveness of passive and continuous data collection in private settings; (2) data protection and security and the potential for negative downstream/future impacts on patients of unintended disclosure; and (3) ethical issues related to patients' limited versus hyper awareness of passive and continuous data collection and monitoring. Clinicians and developers highlighted that these concerns may be exacerbated by the integration of neural data with other computer perception data. Discussion: Our findings suggest that the integration of neurotechnologies with existing computer perception technologies raises novel concerns around dignity-related and other harms (e.g., stigma, discrimination) that stem from data security threats and the growing potential for reidentification of sensitive data. Further, our findings suggest that patients' awareness and preoccupation with feeling monitored via computer sensors ranges from hypo- to hyper-awareness, with either extreme accompanied by ethical concerns (consent vs. anxiety and preoccupation). These results highlight the need for systematic research into how best to implement these technologies into clinical care in ways that reduce disruption, maximize patient benefits, and mitigate long-term risks associated with the passive collection of sensitive emotional, behavioral and neural data.

Abstract:This article reviews recent advances in telemetrics, a class of wireless information systems technology that can collect and transmit a wide variety of behavioral and environmental data remotely. Telemetrics include wearable computers that weave on-body sensors into articles of clothing, ubiquitous computers that embed sensors and transmitters seamlessly into the environment, and handheld devices, such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants, that can record cognitive and affective states. Examples of telemetric applications are provided to illustrate how this technology has been used in the behavioral sciences to unobtrusively and repeatedly gather physiological, behavioral, environmental, cognitive, and affective data in natural settings. Special issues relating to privacy and confidentiality, practical considerations, and statistical and measurement challenges when telemetrics are used are also discussed.

Framed as a fictional paper published at some point in the not-so-distant future, this design fiction draws from current inquiry and debate into the ethics of using public data for research, and speculatively extends this conversation into even more robust and more personal data that could exist when we design new technologies in the future. By looking to how the precedents of today might impact the practices of tomorrow, we can consider how we might design policies, ethical guidelines, and technologies that are forward-thinking.

Cyberbullying is a serious topic, however, the majority of studies have concentrated on worries related to consumer privacy. It is crucial to use ethical decision-making methods before participating in any type of web-based activity because of how simple and quick these activities are. This essay seeks to examine the expenses associated with social media websites that rely on internet-based technology, as well as any possible drawbacks and moral dilemmas. The research looks at ethical issues including laws, rules, and privacy-regulating insurance plans. Consumer worries regarding the moral implications of internet purchases have increased along with e-commerce. Abstract:Background The UN's High Commissioner's request for a moratorium on the use and adoption of specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that pose serious risk to human rights, this commentary explores the current environment and future implications of using third-party wearable technologies in research for participants’ data privacy and data security. While wearables have been identified as tools for improving users’ physical and mental health and wellbeing by providing users with more personalized data and tailored interventions, the use of this technology does not come without concern. Objective Primarily, as researchers, we are concerned with enmeshment of corporate and research interests and what this can mean for participant data. Methods By drawing on specific sections of the UN Report ‘The right to privacy in the digital age’, we discuss the conflicts between corporate and research agendas and point out the current and future implications of the involvement of third-party companies for participant data privacy, data security and data usage. Finally, we offer suggestions for researchers and third-party wearable developers for conducting ethical and transparent research with wearable tech. Conclusion We propose that this commentary be used as a foothold for further discussions about the ethical implications of using third-party wearable tech in research.

Abstract:Privacy needs on today’s internet differ from the information privacy needs in traditional e-commerce settings due to their focus on interactions among online peers rather than merely transactions with an online vendor. Peer-oriented online interactions have critical implications for an individual’s virtual presence and self-cognition. Yet existing conceptualizations of internet privacy concerns have solely focused on the control of personal information release and on online interactions with online vendors. Drawing on the theory of personal boundaries, this study revisits the theoretical foundation of online privacy and proposes a multidimensional peer-related privacy concern construct, that focuses on privacy violations from online peers. We term this new construct “Peer Privacy Concern” (PrPC) and define it as the general feeling of being unable to maintain functional personal boundaries in online activities as a result of the behavior of online peers. This construct consists of four dimensions comprised of a reconceptualization of information privacy concerns to also reflect privacy concerns with respect to peers’ handling of self-shared information and with respect to peer-shared information about one’s self, and three new dimensions that tap into the arising privacy needs from virtual interactions (i.e., virtual territory privacy concern and communication privacy concern) as well as from the need to maintain psychological independence (i.e., psychological privacy concern). These new dimensions, which are rooted in the theory of personal boundaries, are prominent privacy needs in online social interactions with peers. However, they are absent from previous privacy concern conceptualizations. Scales for measuring this new construct are developed and empirically validated.

Measurement of older adults' social networks using technologies in the context of health and social care: a scoping review protocol

Abstract:Objective: This scoping review aims to identify and map the use of technology in measuring and analyzing older adults' social networks in the context of health and social care. Introduction: Research has shown that social networks impact the health and well-being of older adults. Advancements in the internet, electronic and digital devices, social media, and healthcare technology enhance our ability to collect social network and health data. These rapidly evolving technologies present opportunities to overcome limitations in social network measurement and promote improved understanding of the impact of social networks on the health and well-being of older adults. Inclusion criteria: This scoping review will include studies of older adults that measured social networks using technology and were related to health or health and social care. Studies published in English from 2004 to the present will be included. Books, editorials, letters, and commentaries will be excluded. Methods: PubMed (MEDLINE), Sociological Abstracts, SocINDEX, CINAHL, and Web of Science will be searched for related articles. Gray literature will be included by searching conference abstracts via Conference Papers Index and hand-searching conference proceedings from the American Sociological Society and the Gerontological Society of America. Data will be extracted by two independent reviewers using an a priori data extraction tool. Tables and summary narratives will be used to map and synthesize existing approaches to measuring social networks using technology, the settings for measurement development or testing, and the use of approaches in discovery science, implementation science, or clinical care.
Legal, ethical, and wider implications of suicide risk detection systems in social media platforms

Abstract:Suicide remains a problem of public health importance worldwide. Cognizant of the emerging links between social media use and suicide, social media platforms, such as Facebook, have developed automated algorithms to detect suicidal behavior. While seemingly a well-intentioned adjunct to public health, there are several ethical and legal concerns to this approach. For example, the role of consent to use individual data in this manner has only been given cursory attention. Social media users may not even be aware that their social media posts, movements, and Internet searches are being analyzed by non-health professionals, who have the decision-making ability to involve law enforcement upon suspicion of potential self-harm. Failure to obtain such consent presents privacy risks and can lead to exposure and wider potential harms. We argue that Facebook's practices in this area should be subject to well-established protocols. These should resemble those utilized in the field of human subjects research, which upholds standardized, agreed-upon, and well-recognized ethical practices based on generations of precedent. Prior to collecting sensitive data from social media users, an ethical review process should be carried out. The fiduciary framework seems to resonate with the emergent roles and obligations of social media platforms to accept more responsibility for the content being shared.

Abstract:The use of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in healthcare applications is growing in a fast pace. Numerous applications such as heart rate monitor, blood pressure monitor and endoscopic capsule are already in use. To address the growing use of sensor technology in this area, a new field known as wireless body area networks (WBAN or simply BAN) has emerged. As most devices and their applications are wireless in nature, security and privacy concerns are among major areas of concern. Due to direct involvement of humans also increases the sensitivity. Whether the data gathered from patients or individuals are obtained with the consent of the person or without it due to the need by the system, misuse or privacy concerns may restrict people from taking advantage of the full benefits from the system. People may not see these devices safe for daily use. There may also possibility of serious social unrest due to the fear that such devices may be used for monitoring and tracking individuals by government agencies or other private organizations. In this paper we discuss these issues and analyze in detail the problems and their possible measures.

Abstract:This article relies upon the recreancy theorem to empirically assess the extent to which people’s desires for technology efficacy, personal security, and social justice affect their trust in and support for government use of network surveillance as it is applied to local law enforcement and homeland security. The recreancy theorem complements technology adoption models in that it focuses upon public assessments of innovations as they are managed by societal institutions, thereby providing conceptual congruity between technology adoption and public assessments of institutional competency and integrity. Based upon the results of a social survey of 1488 adults living in the contiguous United States, the article expands our conceptual understanding of public opinions of network surveillance and empirically documents public demand for network surveillance that fosters goals of social justice more so than goals of self-interest.
