Abstract:Removal of Cs isotopes, one of the heat generators present in used fuel/reprocessing waste, is one of the most challenging obstacles in the disposal of these materials. For this purpose, a new silica-calix[4]crown material, CBisC6@SiO2, has been prepared. The material was created coupling a symmetric calixcrown derivative CBisC6 into the pores and channels of the SiO2-P particles through vacuum hybridization and immobilization. SEM, Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA-DSC and XPS were used to characterize the structure of the final material. The adsorption of Cs and some representative metals onto CBisC6@SiO2 has been investigated in the range of 0.4 to 6.0 M HNO3. CBisC6@SiO2 showed strong adsorption ability and selectivity for Cs over all of others except for Rb in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption mechanism of Cs was verified using XRD and FT-IR spectra. The separation of Cs from other waste materials by CBisC6@SiO2 was performed through six adsorption-desorption cycles. The removal efficiency of Cs was 99.5%, while other fission products were weakly absorbed except for Rb with the removal efficiency of 85.3%. A nearly quantitative removal of Cs by CBisC6@SiO2 was achieved.

Abstract:Uncontrolled exploitation of heavy metals has caused environmental pollution and mineral resource depletion crises. The first-choice approach for addressing these issues is heavy metal upcycling. However, efficient retrieval and conversion of heavy metals from contaminated environments into high-value-added products remains challenging. Here, we developed a strategy to simultaneously achieve efficient accumulation (256 mg/g), magnetic separation (similar to 1 min), and directly in-site conversion of Cd2+ from wastewater into core-shell ZnS@Zn0.58Cd0.42S heterojunction photocatalysts (ZSC). Microalgae-derived yolk-shell microspheres containing multicomponent nanocores (Fe3O4 and ZnS) were developed to serve as adsorbent, magnetic carrier, and pho-tocatalyst assembly platform to achieve Cd2+ upcycling into ZSC. In particularly, ZSC shows much higher photocatalytic activity for H-2 generation and organic pollutant degradation than do commercial photocatalysts (P25-TiO2 and CdS) due to its greater utilization of solar energy and heterostructure. Altogether, we provide an appealing strategy for upcycling cadmium into high-performance heterojunction photocatalysts for environ-mental purification and clean energy generation.

Abstract:Sealed Radioactive Sources (SRS) are wildly used in industry, agriculture, medicine, education and research. Because of some reasons, for example the radioactive content decay, the new technology application or the operator bankrupt, disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) will be produced and shall be managed well because the activity of some SRS and DSRS is still higher and the potential risks may happened. SRS and DSRS must be sustainably managed for the protection of individuals, society and the environment. DSRS management options usually include transfer to SRS producers/original suppliers, long term storage, disposal, reuse and recycle, exempt or clearance. In Ghana, some DSRS have been transferred back to SRS producers/original suppliers, DSRS that cannot be transferred back to SRS producer/original suppliers are been stored in related facility. Ghana is planning to carry on DSRS disposal project with other countries. The disposal options include near surface disposal, borehole disposal, or geological disposal. An optimized disposal option in Ghana shall be verified considering the total amount of DSRS, the radionuclides of radioactive content, the safety and economy of the disposal options and other factors. Among these factors, safety assessment on DSRS disposal must be carried out. Usually, the software AMBER or ECOLEGO is used for the safety assessment on DSRS disposal This research work seeks to layout of safety assessment of disposal options of DSRS. DSRS options comparison.

Abstract:A macro porous silica-based ammonium phosphomolybdate (AMP/SiO2) adsorbent was synthesized and tested for separation and recovery of 137Cs from real radioactive liquid waste. The excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity of AMP/SiO2 for 137Cs were confirmed. AMP/SiO2 had relatively large decontamination efficiency of 137Cs exceeding 99% in radioactive wastes, and the decontamination factors of 137Cs were estimated to be 688 and 270 after adsorption in radioactive waste at 1 and 3 mol/L HNO3, respectively. In column operation, the separation and recovery of Cs(I) and coexisting ions could be realized using different eluents, and the recovery rate of Cs(I) was more than 90%. The Cs 3d and Mo 3d X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic spectra of AMP/SiO2 before and after Cs(I) adsorption, suggesting that the ion exchange process of cesium with crystal lattice cations was the governing mechanism, and cesium ions could spontaneously react with approximately two ammonium ions in each AMP lattice by density functional theory simulation. Further, the crystal binding energy of each revised model showed an upward trend with the progress of the adsorption. After sintering at 1200 degrees C, CsAlSiO4, which could stably solidify eluted cesium, was formed in the allophane-based solidified product. The crystalline properties and volume reduction effect of the sintered products were enhanced with the increase in the allophane content. Ba(II) hardly entered the lattice of CsAlSiO4 and occupied the Cs(I) site, resulting in minor changes in the crystal structure with substitution of Ba(II) for Cs(I).

Abstract:Black mass is the industry term applied to end-of-life (EoL) lithium-ion batteries that have been mechanically processed for potential use as a recycled material to recover the valuable metals present, including cobalt, lithium, manganese, nickel and copper. A significant challenge to the effective processing of black mass is the complexity of the feed material. Two samples of black mass from a European source were analysed using a combination of methods including automated SEM-EDS (AMICS) to characterise and quantify the phases present and particle chemistry. Micro X-CT imaging, overlain onto automated mineralogy images, enabled the 3D morphology of the particles to be determined. Micro-XRF was used to map the copper, nickel, manganese and cobalt-bearing phases. Since Li cannot be detected using SEM-EDS, its abundance was semi-quantified using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The integration of these complimentary analytical methods allowed for detailed phase characterisation, which may guide the potential hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical recycling routes and chemical assaying.

Abstract:Treating hazardous waste Ni from the electroplating industry is mandated world-wide, is exceptionally expensive, and carries a very high CO 2 footprint. Rather than regarding Ni as a disposable waste, the chemicals and petrochemicals industries could instead consider it a huge resource. In the work described herein, we present a strategy for upcycling waste Ni from electroplating wastewater into a photothermal catalyst for converting CO 2 to CO. Specifically, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in amine functionalized porous SiO 2 , is demonstrated to efficiently scavenge Ni from electroplating wastewater for utilization in photothermal CO 2 catalysis. The core-shell catalyst architecture produces CO at a rate of 1.9 mol·g Ni −1 ·h −1 (44.1 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 ), a selectivity close to 100%, and notable long-term stability. This strategy of upcycling metal waste into functional, catalytic materials offers a multi-pronged approach for clean and renewable energy technologies.

Abstract:A novel composite material of SiO2–Al2O3 based on poly(acrylic acid–maleic acid) was synthesized by irradiated with 60Co γ-rays at a dose of 25 KGy. The composite material was characterized using FTIR, TGA and BET surface area. Adsorption of 134Cs from HNO3 was studied as a function of contact time, temperature and concentration of Cs. Sorption behavior of 134Cs in different concentration of HCl, HNO3, acetic acid, ascorbic acid, citric acid, NaCl and NaNO3 solutions has been investigated. It can be concluded that the P(AA–MA)/SiO2/Al2O3 is promising adsorbent for Cs removal from acidic liquid radioactive waste.

Abstract:Abstract Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have driven the industry of rechargeable batteries in recent years due to their advantages such as high energy and power density and relatively long lifespan. Nevertheless, the dispose of spent LIBs has harmful impacts on the environment which needs to be addressed by recycling LIBs. However, none of the currently developed recycling processes is economical. The physical recycling process of LIBs may be economical if the cathode active materials can be separated, regenerated, and reused to make new LIBs. However, the first barrier for regeneration and reusing is the separation of different types of spent cathode active materials in the filter cake that are mixed with each other and come in the form of very fine powders with various sizes (< 30 μm) from the physical recycling process. The aim of this study is to separate the mixture of cathode active materials by adopting Stokes’ law. The focus will be only on mechanical separation with no thermal or chemical separation methods. For the validation, an experiment was designed and successfully performed where different types of spent cathode materials (e.g., LiCoO2, LiFePO4, and LiMn2O4) were separated from the spent anode materials (e.g., graphite) with high efficiency and reasonable time.

Abstract:The growing reliance on nuclear energy and uncharacteristic accidents, such as those in Chornobyl and Fukushima, have emphasized the need for effective radiocesium (r-Cs: 137 Cs) removal from environmental wastewater. This study presents the development of DFDB18C6@SBA-NH 2 , a novel solid-phase sorbent designed to remove r-Cs from aqueous environments selectively. The sorbent was synthesized by tethering a macrocyclic ligand, DFDB18C6 (di-formyl dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether), to amino-functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-15). The sorbent's structure, thermal properties, and surface morphology were comprehensively characterized. Batch sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of different operating factors on r-Cs sorption, including solution pH, contact duration, initial ion concentration, ambient temperature, and matrix ions contents. The sorption behavior was better explained with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, which suggest a probable monolayer chemisorption process. The thermodynamic evaluation indicated the exothermic nature of the sorption process. The DFDB18C6@SBA-NH 2 sorbent demonstrated significant 137 Cs removal (approximately 85 %) from Fukushima-originated wastewater, with competing matrix ions such as Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , and K + . These results highlight the potential of DFDB18C6@SBA-NH 2 as a potential solid-phase sorbent for efficient and selective r-Cs decontamination in waste aqueous matrices.

Abstract:The isoguanosine self-assembled pentamer (isoG-star) has exhibited remarkable selectivity for Cs+ binding over competing alkali and alkali earth metal cation, rendering it a promising "extractor" for radioactive waste 137Cs separation. However, to make isoG-star a pracrtical material for Cs+ isolation, the development of recyclable isoG-star material is required. In this study, a systematic screening of functional isoG derivatives was performed. By employing well-defined complex formation and post-assembly modification, a covalently tethered isoG5-star was prepared through olefin metathesis, utilizing a designed isoG monomer. The application of this newly developed covalently linked isoG-star enabled selective Cs+ extraction, followed by controled solvent-induced H-bond dessociation. This resulted in the creation of a recyclable Cs+ extractor, demonstrating excellent cation selectivity and good reusability (over seven cycles) for the first time. Consequently, this new supramolecular macrocycle offers a practical new platform for the treatment of radiocesium (134Cs and 137Cs) in an environmentally friendly and highly effective manner.

Abstract:99Technetium (99Tc) is a hazardous radionuclide that poses a serious environmental threat. The wide variation and complex chemistries of liquid nuclear waste streams containing 99Tc often create unique, site specific challenges when sequestering and immobilizing the waste in a matrix suitable for long-term storage and disposal. Therefore, an effective management plan for 99Tc containing liquid radioactive wastes (such as storage (tanks) and decommissioned wastes) will likely require a variety of suitable materials/matrixes capable of adapting to and addressing these challenges. In this review, we discuss and highlight the key developments for effective removal and immobilization of 99Tc liquid waste in inorganic waste forms. Specifically, we review the synthesis, characterization, and application of materials for the targeted removal of 99Tc from (simulated) waste solutions under various experimental conditions. These materials include (i) layered double hydroxides (LDHs), (ii) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), (iii) ion-exchange resins (IERs) as well as cationic organic polymers (COPs), (iv) surface modified natural clay materials (SMCMs), and (v) graphene-based materials (GBMs). Second, we discuss some of the major and recent developments toward 99Tc immobilization in (i) glass, (ii) cement, and (iii) iron mineral waste forms. Finally, we present future challenges that need to be addressed for the design, synthesis, and selection of suitable matrixes for the efficient sequestration and immobilization of 99Tc from targeted wastes. The purpose of this review is to inspire research on the design and application of various suitable materials/matrixes for selective removal of 99Tc present globally in different radioactive wastes and its immobilization in stable/durable waste forms.

Abstract:Extraction of the light weight radioisotopes (LWR) 89Sr/90Sr, from the expended nuclear bars in the Fukushima reactor, should have decreased the extent of contamination during the course of the accident. 89Sr applications could pay for the extraction of 89Sr/90Sr from nuclear residues. Added value could be obtained by using 89Sr for cancer treatments. Known technologies could be used to relate into innovative ways LWR, to obtain nuclear energy at battery scale. LWR interact by contact with scintillators converting \beta-radiation into light-energy. This would lead to manufacturing scintillator lamps which operate independently of other source of energy. These lamps could be used to generate photoelectric energy. Engineering of radioisotopes scintillator photovoltaic cells, would lead to devices without moving parts.

Abstract:Herein, sorption of 137Cs onto modified activated carbon (MAC) was carried out implying kinetics and equilibrium studies. The sorption results obeyed to a pseudo-1st-order kinetic and were applied to different isotherm models. According to the correlation coefficients,R2, the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Frumkin isotherm models successfully described the obtained data rather than Temkin isotherm. Based on the R2, the equilibrium data followed the sequence Langmuir>Freundlich>Frumkin>Temkin isotherm. The negative values of Gibbs free energy revealed that the removal process was feasible and spontaneous. The negative values of enthalpy clarified that the process is an exothermic one, suggesting that retention of 137Cs decreased with raising reaction temperatures. The values of ΔH << 25 kJ/mol indicating that the adsorption process of cesium 137Cs ions onto MAC is a physical adsorption process while the positive entropy values demonstrated an increase in randomness among the solid-liquid phase during adsorption. Finally, the sorption results revealed that the MAC is a suitable material for the capture of 137Cs from low-level radioactive waste.

Abstract:A purification method is developed to determine 90 Sr in radioactive waste. A separation based on Sr-resin® with a pretreatment using TRU-resin® provides satisfactory Sr recovery yields before the 90 Sr measurement by liquid scintillation counting (LSC) regardless the analyzed samples with low or high activity level. The selectivity of the procedure is checked by measuring the 90 Y ingrowth after different days of separation without waiting for secular equilibrium. In order to obtain a REACH compliant method without scintillation cocktails, a plastic scintillation resin selective for Sr is implemented on the basis of the developed protocol. The optimized method is applied successfully to representative nuclear waste including samples with high Pu content (effluents, concretes and sludges).

Abstract: Cesium-137 (137Cs) and europium-152+154 (152+154Eu) are the main species found in radioactive liquid wastes. Consequently, the study of their removal from wastewater was essential. For this purpose, hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles were produced from calcium-rich bio-wastes (mussel shells) by a wet chemical precipitation technique. The physicochemical properties, morphology and thermal behaviour of the HA nanoparticles were examined by XRD, FT-IR, SEM/EDX, TGA/DTA. In addition, the surface area was estimated using a nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherm. Afterwards, the adsorptive removal capacity of HA nanoparticles for 137Cs and 152+154Eu within the pH range of 2−12 from aqueous solutions was determined, and the sorbent dose and contact time were also considered. The current work utilized cost effective HA nanoparticles as a planned barrier for the removal of nuclear ions originating from radio reactor liquid wastes.

Abstract:This work describes the development and optimization of the radiochemical separation of 147 Pm and 151 Sm. The two main challenges addressed were: the radiochemical separation of the lanthanides by using LN Resin and DGA,N Resin, and the quantification of the chemical recovery of 147 Pm with a non-isotopic analogue ( i.e. neodymium). The applicability of radiochemical separation procedures was investigated by using spiked samples. The optimized radiochemical separation procedure by using LN Resin was applied to a reactor cooling water primary coolant sample with an automated system. Sector Field Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (SF-ICP-MS) was used to determine the chemical recoveries.

Abstract:A severe threat was posed due to improper and inefficient recycling of waste batteries in China. The present work considered the fundamental aspects of the recycling of cadmium from waste nickel–cadmium batteries by means of vacuum metallurgy separation in scale-up. In the first stage of this work, the characterization of waste nickel–cadmium batteries was carried out. Five types of batteries from different brands and models were selected and their components were characterized in relation to their elemental chemical composition and main phase. In the second stage of this work, the parameters affecting the recycling of cadmium by means of vacuum metallurgy separation were investigated and a L16 (44) orthogonal design was applied to optimize the parameters. With the thermodynamics theory and numerical analysis, it can be seen that the orthogonal design is an effective tool for investigating the parameters affecting the recycling of cadmium. The optimum operating parameters for the recycling of cadmium obtained by orthogonal design and verification test were 1073K (temperature), 2.5h (heating time), 2wt.% (the addition of carbon powder), and 30mm (the loaded height), respectively, with recycling efficiency approaching 99.98%. The XRD and ICP-AES analyzed results show that the condensed product was characterized as metallic cadmium, and cadmium purity was 99.99% under the optimum condition.
Nano-sized Prussian blue immobilized costless agro-industrial waste for the removal of cesium-137 ions

Abstract:For human health and safety, it is of great importance to develop innovative materials with a vast capacity for powerful removal of radioactive ions from aqueous solutions. Prussian blue functionalized sugarcane bagasse (PB-SCB) was successfully prepared for the efficient elimination of radioactive cesium (137Cs) using a nontoxic, environmentally friendly, and costless method. The prepared renewable material was characterized using different techniques to emphasize morphology, functional groups, crystal structure, and the adsorption process. The adsorption of Cs(I) was better fitted to the pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model which revealed a chemical adsorption mechanism. The experimental isotherm results were best illustrated by the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.98). Besides, the obtained values for the thermodynamic parameters indicating that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. In addition to demonstrating high adsorption capacity for Cs ion removal (56.7 mg/g at 30 °C), PB-SCB might consider being an efficient and cost-effective adsorbent for the decontamination of cesium, where an estimated cost analysis revealed that the expenditure for the removal of 1000 mg/L cesium from alkaline radioactive wastewater is likely to be US$0.12. Abstract:Separation of cathode materials from the current collector remains a challenging task for the recycling of both spent lithium-ion batteries and cathode scraps. Dissolving the organic binder polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) with an organic solvent to recover both cathode materials and Al foils is an efficient and promising method. However, the use of toxic solvents limits their practical application in recycling large amounts of cathode scraps generated during the manufacturing process. Cyrene, a bioderived green solvent, is proposed here for a solvent-based separation process. This study investigated a closed-loop recovery process to reclaim cathode materials, Al foils, and PVDF binder from cathode scraps. Additionally, the reuse of the Cyrene solvent led to a circular recycling process. The Cyrene-based separation process embraces a sustainable electrode recovery and reuse platform and paves the way for battery recycling.
