Abstract:Sugar alcohols have considerable potential for usage in medium-temperature thermal energy storage applications; however, they suffer from poor thermal reliability and low thermal conductivity. Nanoencapsulation is an effective approach to improve the thermal energy storage performance of the phase-change materials. Until now, nanoencapsulation of sugar alcohols with a high phase-change performance has been rarely reported. The objective of this study is to develop a method for the nanoencapsulation of sugar alcohols with an enhanced phase-change performance. D-mannitol nanocapsules with a silica-graphene oxide composite shell were synthesized and investigated to demonstrate the validity of this novel method. The morphology, size distribution, and core-shell microstructure of the nanocapsules were observed using a scanning electron microscope, particle size and zeta potential analyzer, and transmission electron microscope. In addition, the phase-change performance of the nanocapsules was studied using a differential scanning calorimeter, a thermogravimetric analyzer, and weight loss and appearance investigation. The results demonstrate that the melting and solidifying latent heat of the nanocapsules are 216.7 and 174.4 kJ/kg, respectively. The energy storage efficiency of the nanocapsules was 75.8% and its 96.1% was maintained after repeated thermal cycling. Compared with pure D-mannitol, the thermal conductivity of the nanocapsules was observed to increase by up to 128.6%. The novel nanocapsules exhibited good medium-temperature thermal energy storage prospects.

Abstract:Microencapsulated phase change material(MPCM) were prepared by using solid paraffin as core and melamine-urea-formaldehyde condensation resin as shell through in-situ polymerization.Problems such as low thermal conductivity and hydrophilicity were studied.The thermal conductivity of core and surface performance were modified by using graphite and nano-SiO2.The surface morphology,structure,thermal properties were measured and characterized by optical microscopy(OM),infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The results showed that:thermal storage can maintain original characteristics of phase change enthalpy 47.5J / g after paraffin microencapsulated.The mean diameter of microcapsule was 45μm with rough surface.Encapsulation efficiency of paraffin was up to 80%.After nano-SiO2 modification,hydrophilicity,thermal properties and mechanical strength have been enhanced and thermal conductivity have been increased after graphite modified.

Abstract:We prepare phase change material microcapsules via an organic phase separation method, adopting eutectic hydrated salt as the core material and composite organic polymers as the shell material. The resulting microcapsules exhibit spherical morphology and core‐shell structure with a phase change enthalpy of 131.4 J/g. Moreover, this method of microencapsulation could be extended to other liquid or water‐soluble PCMs. Inorganic hydrated salts, noted for their high thermal storage density, excellent thermal conductivity, and non‐toxicity, are suitable candidate material for thermal management, particularly in enhancing human living environments when their phase transition points are near room temperature. Herein, we present an efficient and environmentally friendly microencapsulation method for inorganic hydrated salt through organic phase separation method. Eutectic hydrated salt (EHS) consisted of sodium carbonate decahydrate (SCD) and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (DHPD) was prepared as the core material while the mixture of ethyl cellulose (EC) and acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) as composite shell materials. Various characterization techniques were used to evaluate the micromorphology, chemical structure, thermal properties and thermal stability of the microcapsules. The resulting microcapsules exhibited a phase change temperature of 22.6 °C with a remarkable enthalpy of 131.4 J/g. Particularly, the enthalpy remained at 117.7 J/g even after 50 thermal cycles, indicating stable cycling thermal reliability. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the EHS was effectively encapsulated within the composite shell, and the microcapsules had a quasi‐spherical shape and core‐shell structure. More importantly, this method of microencapsulation could potentially be extended to other liquid hydrated salts at room temperature, offering a versatile approach for future applications.

Abstract:Inorganic hydrated salts show great potential for use in low-temperature energy storage. Nevertheless, drawbacks, such as phase separation, liquid leakage, and inherent supercooling, restrict their application in sustainable building technology. Here, nanoencapsulated phase change materials (NePCMs) was designed by combination of hydrated salt and inorganic-organic composite shell to enhance the thermal energy storage of buildings. Using a two-step method, PMMA and TiO 2 , considered excellent shell materials, were harmoniously combined on the surface of Na 2 HPO 4 ·12H 2 O core. The latent heat of the nanocapsules was approximately 139.6 kJ/kg. After undergoing 500 heating and cooling cycles, the latent heat of nanocapsules only degraded by approximately 5 %. Leakage of water was not observed following heating of the NePCMs to 60 °C for 1 h. The supercooling degree of the nanocapsules decreased to around 0.7 °C. The hybrid PMMA-TiO 2 shell was designed to improve shape stability, reduce water loss, and enhance mechanical properties. Through burning experiments, it was confirmed that NePCMs had good flame-retardant properties. Thus, hydrated salt nanocapsules with inorganic-organic composite shell are an ideal candidate for use as building materials for effective thermal management and fire protection.

Abstract:A novel hydrated salt composite phase change material was prepared. Firstly, the phase transition process of sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT)/ sodium monohydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (DSP) eutectic salt was studied. And the optimization effect of hydrophilic carbon nanotubes (HCNTs) on the thermal properties of eutectic salt was analyzed. The results showed that the cycle stability of the eutectic salt was the best when the mass ratio of SAT/DSP was 9:1 and the degree of supercooling was 2.5 °C. With increasing HCNTs mass fraction, the thermal conductivity of the composite showed a linear increase, reaching the highest value of 1.29 W/(m K), which was 182.89% higher than that without HCNTs. The heat storage density exhibited a linear decrease, with a maximum decrease of 5.59%. Finally, the cyclic stability of the HCNTs/SAT/DSP composites was tested, and the results showed that after 200 solid–liquid cycles, each group of materials showed good cycle stability for phase change heat storage system. In this study, the problems of supercooling and phase separation of sodium acetate trihydrate were solved. And its thermal conductivity was significantly strengthened, the results of this study provide a reference for the collaborative adjustment of phase-change materials and thermal storage system components.

Abstract:Abstract Phase change materials (PCMs), especially salt hydrates possess high volumetric energy storage capacity in their transition temperature range. These materials are used in applications where it is necessary to store thermal energy due to temporary load shift between demand and availability. Thus, possible applications are HVAC, recovery of waste heat, and defense thermal management. Despite salt hydrates potential, the practical feasibility of latent heat storage with salt hydrates is limited due to low power rating, supercooling, phase segregation, and long-term stability. Its low power rating and long-term stability limits its application in most applications. This work experimentally validates the stability and thermal performance of a compact heat exchanger charged with salt hydrate during melting and freezing. The compact heat exchanger was designed with fins on both the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and salt hydrate PCM side. The thermal performance of the latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTESS) was evaluated for various operating conditions. The results show that LHTESS could achieve an average heat transfer coefficient of 124 and 87 W/(m2 K) during melting and solidification, respectively. The stability of the system in suppressing supercooling was validated over 800 cycles with nucleating agent and active homogenous nucleation techniques. The supercooling was reduced to 3 °C with zinc hydroxyl nitrate as nucleating agent and less than 1 °C with the active homogenous nucleation technique. The LHTESS showed less than 6% degradation in energy storage capacity over 800 cycles.
LiNO 3 /NaCl nanocapsules with high thermal properties for medium-temperature thermal energy storage

Abstract:The use of molten salts as phase change materials (PCMs) for medium temperature thermal energy storage is common. However, these materials are associated with limitations, including leakage during the phase change process, low thermal conductivity, and low moisture resistance for specific types of molten salts such as LiNO 3 /NaCl. This research focuses on the preparation and properties of LiNO 3 /NaCl nanoencapsulated phase change materials (NEPCM). Through detailed analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), we confirmed the successful encapsulation of the PCM and the presence of spherical nanocapsules. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the encapsulation process did not alter the crystal structure of the PCM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the NEPCM exhibited a phase change temperature of 222.4 °C and a latent heat of fusion of 228.7 kJ/kg. Furthermore, the NEPCM demonstrated a high thermal reliability of 99.7 % after fifty thermal cycles, indicating excellent cyclic stability. Moisture resistance experiments were carried out by subjecting both the PCM and NEPCM to a humid environment. The results showed that encapsulation effectively reduced water absorption in the PCM. Thermal conductivity measurements of the nanocapsule suspension were conducted using the Hot Disk method, which indicated an approximate 16.3 % increase in thermal conductivity compared to the base fluid. Additionally, the addition of 2 % MgO to the nanocapsule suspension further enhanced the thermal conductivity by 31.7 %, while maintaining the dispersion stability of the suspension. These enhancements in properties are advantageous for the practical application of the NEPCM as a PCM for thermal energy storage. The overall results demonstrate that nanoencapsulation offers significant improvements in the thermal reliability, moisture resistance, and thermal conductivity of molten salt PCMs, thus broadening their potential applications in medium temperature thermal energy storage systems.

Abstract:Developing thermal storage materials is crucial for the efficient recovery of thermal energy. Salt-based phase-change materials have been widely studied. Despite their high thermal storage density and low cost, they still face issues such as low thermal conductivity and easy leaks. Therefore, a new type of NaCl-Al2O3@SiC@Al2O3 macrocapsule was developed to address these drawbacks, and it exhibited excellent rapid heat storage and release capabilities and was extremely stable, significantly reducing the risk of leakage at high temperatures for industrial waste heat recovery and in concentrated solar power systems above 800 °C. Thermal storage macrocapsules consisted of a double-layer encapsulation of silicon carbide and alumina and a self-standing core of NaCl-Al2O3. After enduring over 1000 h at a high temperature of 850 °C, the encapsulated phase-change material exhibited an extremely low weight loss rate of less than 5% compared with NaCl@Al2O3 and NaCl-Al2O3@Al2O3 macrocapsules, for which the weight loss rate was reduced by 25% and 10%, respectively, proving their excellent leakage prevention. The SiC powder layer, serving as an intermediate coating, further prevented leakage, while the use of Al2O3 ceramics for encapsulation enhanced the overall mechanical strength. It was innovatively discovered that the Al2O3 particles formed a network structure around the molten NaCl, playing an important role in maintaining the shape and preventing leakage of the composite thermal storage phase-change material. Furthermore, the addition of Al2O3 significantly enhanced the rapid heat storage and release rate of NaCl-Al2O3 compared to pure NaCl. This encapsulated phase-change material demonstrated outstanding durability and rapid heat storage and release performance, offering an innovative approach to the application of salt phase-change materials in the field of high temperature rapid heat storage and release and encapsulating NaCl as a high-temperature thermal storage material in a packed bed system. Compared with conventional salt-based phase-change materials, the developed product is expected to significantly improve the reliability and thermal efficiency of thermal storage systems.

Abstract:Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials, such as high thermal storage density, low-cost and non-toxic. Herein, we microencapsulated sodium phosphate dodecahydrate (DSP) with silica through interfacial polymerization combined with sol-gel process and systematically investigated the effects of the reaction conditions on the morphology and encapsulation efficiency of the microcapsules. SEM and TEM were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of the microcapsules, and the lattice fringes and crystal diffraction ring of DSP inside the microcapsules can be observed by high-resolution TEM and the selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The chemical composition and crystalline structure of the microcapsule were detected by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), which demonstrated the presence of DSP. DSC results indicated that the microcapsule prepared at 40 degrees C for 8 h with the core/shell mass ratio of 4: 1 had the highest encapsulation efficiency of 75.3% with the melting enthalpy of 177.0 J/g. The good thermoregulating performance of the microcapsule was demonstrated by adding it to the building model and comparing its temperature variation with the model without any microcapsule. Owing to the facile preparation, large latent heat, good thermal reliability and excellent thermoregulating performance, the obtained microcapsules will have a good prospect in thermal energy storage application.

Abstract:Abstract Salt hydrate based Phase-Change Materials (PCM) typically store and discharge large quantities of heat during their phase transition process. However, the repeated use of these PCM, especially when they are completely dehydrated and superheated in a cyclic process, is impeded by certain irreversible behavior. These include (1) phase segregation: where the PCM degrades to forms a lower hydrate during phase transition while losing its storage capacity, and (2) subcooling: when crystallization and rehydration from the liquid PCM state occurs at a temperature lower than their phase transition point. Higher degrees of subcooling (ΔTs), which is how much the PCM has to be super cooled below its phase transition temperature for crystallization to begin, adversely affects its performance and in some cases renders it ineffective. Lithium Nitrate Trihydrate [(LNT) LiNO3.3H2O] is one of the more promising candidate among these inorganic salt hydrate PCMs because of its rather stable phase change behavior and relatively very high latent heat capacity (282kJ/kg). Nevertheless, when completely in superheated liquid phase, it requires a high degree of subcooling (ΔTs > 20°C), which limits its utility. This study reports a novel nucleating agent — Zinc Nitrate Hexahydrate (ZNH) that reduces the subcooling to below 5°C (1000 Cycles). However, the latent heat capacity reduced to half the initial value after the cycling.

Abstract:In this paper, nanocapsules containing n-octadecane with an average 50 nm thick shell of poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and a core/shell weight ratio of 80/20 were synthesized by the direct miniemulsion method, respectively. The average size of the capsules is 140 nm and 119 nm, respectively. The chemical structure of the sample was analyzed using Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Crystallography of nanocapsules was investigated by X-ray diffractometer. The surface morphology was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The thermal properties and thermal stability of the sample were obtained from Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). The temperatures and latent heats of melting and crystallizing of PEMA nanocapsule were determined as 32.7 and 29.8 degrees C, 198.5 and -197.1 kJ/kg, respectively. TGA analysis indicated that PEMA/octadecane nanocapsule had good thermal stability. The nanocapsules prepared in this work had a much higher encapsulation ratio (89.5%) and encapsulation efficiency (89.5%). Therefore, the findings of the work lead to the conclusion that the present work provides a novel method for fabricating nanoencapsulated phase change material, and it has a better potential for thermal energy storage. Abstract:In the realm of energy storage, materials engineering is crucial. Specifically, materials engineered at the nanoscale have special qualities that lead to high optical absorbance, thermal conductivity, and potential energy storage. This research highlights the following influence of hybrid nanomaterial graphene:silver with inorganic phase change material (PCM) with experimental characterization (morphological, chemical, thermal, and optical) and numerical analysis. Thermal energy storage (TES) assisted with phase change materials (PCM)s seeks greater attention to bridge the gap between energy demand and supply. PCM has its footprint toward efficient storage of solar energy. Inorganic salt hydrate PCMs are propitious over organic PCMs in terms of energy storage ability, thermal conductivity, and fireproof, however the major issue of supercooling and poor optical absorbance remains. This research investigates commercialized inorganic salt hydrate PCM with phase transition temperature of 50 °C, thermal conductivity of 0.593 W m−1 K which is favoured with melting enthalpy of 190 J g−1, and 2–3 °C of supercooling. Mixture of graphene: silver at a proportion of (1:1) is used as the hybrid nanomaterial to further enhance the thermal conductivity, optical absorbance, and thermal stability. Hybrid nanocomposites are developed via two‐step process involving direct mixing and ultrasonication. Morphological behaviour, chemical stability, optical property, thermal property, thermal reliability, and stability of the developed nanocomposite samples are experimentally analysed. As a result, sustainable TES materials with thermal conductivity of 0.937 W m−1 K, optical absorbance of 0.8, increased energy storage potential is formulated. Subsequently a numerical simulation is conducted to illustrate the potential of the developed nanocomposite in transfer of heat energy.

Abstract:Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (MNH) was considered as a promising medium-and low-temperature phase change material (PCM) owing to high latent heat, weak corrosion, and low price. While supercooling perfor-mance greatly restricted the application of such PCM. In this work, MNH-based composite PCM containing a novel nucleating agent was prepared. Supercooling behavior and thermophysical properties of composites were analyzed. Additionally, thermal performance of composites in a fin-plate heat storage unit was investigated. Results showed that 2 wt% magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MSH) effectively suppressed supercooling per-formance and was chemically compatible with MNH. Composites containing 2 wt% MSH and 2 wt% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) performed favorable thermal properties, including supercooling degree of 0.6 degrees C, phase change temperature of 89 degrees C, latent heat of 166.88 J/g, and heat storage density of 220.78 J/g. Effective working temperature of the composite should be no more than 140 degrees C. Magnesium sulfate tetrahydrate (MST) was actually the real component in MSH that inhibited the supercooling of MNH. Compared with paraffin, encapsulated MNH-based composite PCM with a 6720 kJ higher heat storage capacity possessed a much shorter charging/discharging time due to the higher thermal conductivity. The results might provide a foundation for the practical application of MNH.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs), as latent thermal energy storage, have received plenty of attention in recent decades due to their excellent performance in energy conservation. Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials, such as higher thermal storage density, low cost, nontoxicity and nonflammability. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicate that the microcapsules are basically spherical with a core-shell structure. In addition, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis results suggest that the microcapsules are only the physical coating of composite shell material to core material. Furthermore, the phase transition enthalpy is 168.3 J/g according to the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis. Besides, the method of microencapsulation may be extended to other liquid hydrates salts at room temperature.

Abstract:Inorganic salt hydrates are promising phase-change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage due to their high latent heat of fusion. However, their practical application is often limited by their unstable form, dehydration, large supercooling, and low thermal conductivity. Porous melamine foam and its carbonized derivatives are potential supporting porous materials to encapsulate inorganic salt hydrate PCMs to address these problems. This work investigates the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the morphology and structure of the carbonized foams and their thermal energy storage performance. Pyrolysis of melamine foam at 700–900 °C leads to the formation of crystalline sodium cyanate and sodium carbonate particles on the foam skeleton surface, which allows the spontaneous impregnation of the carbon foam with molten CaCl2·6H2O. The form-stable foam-CaCl2·6H2O composite effectively suppresses supercooling and dehydration, demonstrating the efficacy of carbon foam as a promising supporting material for inorganic salt hydrate PCMs.

Abstract:Nanocapsules containing phase change material (PCM) n-dodecanol as core and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as shell were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization with polymerizable emulsifier DNS-86 and co-emulsifier hexadecane (HD). The nanocapsules were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and laser particle diameter analyzer. The effects of polymerizable emulsifier and co-emulsifier on the properties of nanocapsules were studied. The results show that thermal properties of nanocapsules are affected greatly by the addition methods of HD and the amounts of DNS-86 and HD. Adding HD into water phase is helpful for the encapsulation of n-dodecanol. When the mass ratios of DNS-86 to n-dodecanol and the mass ratios of HD to n-dodecanol were 3% and 2%, the phase change latent heat and the encapsulation efficiency of nanocapsules reached to the maximum value of 98.8. J/g and 82.2%, respectively. Spherical nanocapsules with mean diameter of 150. nm and phase change temperature of 18.2 °C are obtained, which are sure to have a good potential for energy storage. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
Surface evolution of eutectic MgCl2·6H2O-Mg(NO3)2·6H2O phase change materials for thermal energy storage monitored by scanning probe microscopy

Abstract:Surface evolution of eutectic salt hydrate phase change materials (PCMs) plays an important role in progressive degradation, and its tracking and control are crucial to the cycle stability in latent heat storage. In this study, we combined Peak Force quantitative nanomechanics with differential scanning calorimetry to monitor the topography evolution, nanomechanical performances, and corresponding thermal properties of the eutectic MgCl2·6H2O-Mg(NO3)2·6H2O PCM (EPCM). Topography of the EPCM was highly similar to those of the corresponding single crystallohydrates, accounting for its congruent melting and solidifying behavior. Surface evolution-induced initial phase separation at the nanoscale level was directly imaged. This deterioration is rooted in adsorption/evaporation of the surface water molecules, and can be restored accurately. Based on this, a universal strategy to eradicate phase segregation was proposed, with no significant degradation after 1500 thermal cycles. Moreover, evolution of the EPCM containing thickener hydroxyethyl cellulose and its effects on local supercooling due to the formed crosslinking networks were explored, and stable supercooling inhibition (≤0.6 °C) was achieved. This study provides a better understanding of the evolution mechanism and its effects on the thermal behavior, and can be used as an effective guide for improving the long-term stability of low-cost salt hydrate-based latent heat storage materials.

Abstract:In this work, the eutectic Na2CO3–NaCl molten salt was investigated as a new high temperature phase change material for solar thermal energy storage. The composition of the eutectic binary salt was determined with the aid of FactSage software and its thermophysical properties were investigated using a Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer (STA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Inductively coupled plasma analysis has shown that the composition of the as-prepared sample is consistent with the nominal one. The STA results exhibit that the melting point of the eutectic salt is 637.0°C and its heat of fusion is 283.3J/g whereas its specific heat is a function of temperature, which all are in agreement with the theoretical values determined by the FactSage software. The thermal stability analysis indicates that the eutectic molten salt has good thermal stability without weight loss in a CO2 environment at temperatures below 700°C, compared with 0.51% weight loss in a N2 atmosphere. The weight loss observed in the latter, is most likely to be due to the salt׳s decomposition at high temperature. The thermophysical properties of the salt such as melting temperature, latent heat of fusion and solidification, varied marginally after 50 and 100 thermal cycle tests. This demonstrates that the eutectic Na2CO3–NaCl salt is a promising high temperature phase change material when used in a CO2 environment or encapsulation.
