Abstract:Catalytic hydroxylation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol with hydrogen peroxide over copper hydroxyphospate Cu2(OH)PO4 was studied. Catalytic data shows that the Cu2(OH)PO4 catalyst is active, giving the theoretical conversion at 40.2%. The main products in this reaction are trimethylhydroquinone and trimethylbenzoquinone; there is particularly high selectivity for trimethylhydroquinone. When the reaction is carried out in air, the selectivity for trimethylhydroquinone is at 72.2% and when the reaction is carried out under N2, the selectivity is at 94.7%. The other important factors associated with the catalytic properties have been investigated extensively.
Upgrading Phenolic Compounds and Bio-Oil Through Hydrodeoxygenation Using Highly Dispersed Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.
Selective Hydroxylation of Benzene to Phenol via CuII(μ-O•)CuII intermediate by a Nonsymmetric Dicopper Catalyst

Abstract:The one-step oxidation of benzene to phenol represents a significant and promising advancement in modern industries focused on the production of high-value-added chemical products. Nevertheless, challenges persist in achieving sufficient catalytic selectivity and preventing over-oxidation. Inspired by copper enzymes, we present a nonsymmetric diopper complex ([CuII2(TPMAN)(μ-OH)(H2O)]3+, 1) for the selective oxidation of benzene to phenol. Utilizing H2O2 as the oxidant, complex 1 demonstrates remarkable catalytic activity (TON of 14000 within 29 hours) and selectivity exceeding 97%, comparable to the finest homogeneous catalyst derived from first-row transition metals. Noteworthy, the significant substitute effect, alongside a negligible kinetic isotope effect (KIE = 1.05), radical trapping experiments, as well as the inconsistent standard selectivity test of •OH radical, all disapprove the conventional Fenton mechanism and rebound pathway. Theoretical investigations indicate that the active CuII(μ-O•)CuII-OH species generated through the cleavage of the O-O bond in the CuII(μ-1,1-OOH)CuI intermediate, facilitates the hydroxylation of benzene via an electrophilic attack mechanism. The nonsymmetric coordination geometry is crucial in activating the H2O2 and in the process of O-O bond cleavage.

Synthesis and Structure of Copper Hydroxyphosphate and Its High Catalytic Activity in Hydroxylation of Phenol by H2O2

Abstract:A complex oxide of Cu2(OH)PO4 has been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and its structure was investigated by X-ray analysis. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group of Pnnm with a=8.058(2), b=8.393(2), and c=5.889(2) Å. Furthermore, the sample was characterized by thermal analysis (DTA and TG), and these results indicated that the sample was stable below 650°C. After calcination at 850°C, Cu2(OH)PO4 was dehydrated to form Cu4O(PO4)2. The sample isotherm for N2 showed that there wre no micropores or mesopores, and the surface area was only at 1.4 m2/g when the particle size of the sample was 150 μm. Moreover, when this sample was used as a catalyst for phenol hydroxylation by H2O2, the catalytic data showed high activity, which was comparable to that of TS-1. Various factors that influence this catalytic reaction, such as the solvent, reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst size, catalyst amount, molar ratio of phenol to H2O2, and mode of H2O2 addition, were investigated intensively. Additionally, this catalytic reaction was characterized by electron spin resonance (ESR), and it was found that on the Cu2(OH)PO4 catalyst hydroxyl radicals possibly resulting from Cu2+ and H2O2 were important intermediates for formation of catechol and hydroquinone from hydroxylation phenol.

Abstract:Cu x O y @C was directly prepared with glucose and a copper(II) salt by a one-pot hydrothermal method. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, TG, XPS, FT-IR and SEM. The catalytic performance for the hydroxylation of benzene to phenol in acetonitrile with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant was investigated. The features of the reaction system with the prepared heterogeneous catalyst were studied by various reaction parameters including reaction temperature, catalyst amount, hydrogen peroxide amount, reaction time, effect of solvents and additives. The result showed that solvent and additive affect the yield of phenol.

Abstract:A novel catalyst of copper hydroxyphosphate (Cu2(OH)PO4) that has not microporous and mesoporous pores (surface area <0.01 m2/g) has been successfully synthesized from hydrothermal method by using ethylenediamine, phosphoric acid, and copper acetate. Catalytic data in hydroxylation of phenol by hydrogen peroxide as a model reaction for oxidation catalysis showed that the copper hydroxyphosphate is very active catalyst, and its activity is even higher than that of microporous TS-1 catalyst that is known as one of the most effective catalysts. Furthermore, we observed that the Cu2(OH)PO4 catalyst is readily regenerable to its active state by recalcining the expired form in air. Comparison of various catalysts suggests that the unusual catalytic activity on the Cu2(OH)PO4 catalyst may be related to unique structure of as-synthesized Cu2(OH)PO4. Characterization of catalytic process by ESR method gives very strong signals assigned to radical OH species, showing their possible catalytic mechanism.

Abstract:Hydroxylation of phenol with H2O2 catalyzed by Fe(OH)3 was studied. Effects of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time and mole ratio of H2O2 to phenol on the hydroxylation were investigated. The reaction induction period and reaction mechanism were discussed preliminarily. The hydroxylation reaction includes an induction period and a rapid reaction stage before completion. To rationalize the reaction kinetics a mechanism was suggested that a Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox pair acts as active species(involving a free radical mechanism) in the reaction induction period, and a complex consisted of ferric ion and diphenol acts as active species (involving an electrophilic substitution mechanism) in the rapid reaction stage. Under the condition; water as solvent 20.0 mL, phenol 1.880 g, reaction temperature 40-90°C, dosage of Fe (OH)3 as catalyst (based on phenol mass) 0.5% ~ 4.0%, n (H2O2): n(phenol) 0.80, conversion of phenol is above 40.0% and selectivity to diphenol is about 88.0%.

Abstract:Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of phenol has attracted much attention because of its high versatility and remarkable economy-scale advantages. In this submission, a series of M-3-Al-500 catalysts (with M = Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn and Co) were prepared via controlled calcination of layered double hydroxides, and tested in the CWAO of high concentrated phenol (2.1 g/L) with air under mild condition (120 degrees C and 1.0 MPa). It was found that Cu-3-Al-500 was the most active among these tested catalysts as phenol converted completely within 2 h. Characterizations indicated that the performance of Cu-based catalyst could be attributed to the redox transitions of Cu2+/Cu+ and/or the formation of H2O2 in reaction mixture. At the same time, the surface acidity of Cu-3-Al-500 can also accelerate the degradation of phenol. The possible degradation mechanism of phenol over Cu-based catalyst was proposed.

Abstract:Abstract High skeletal titanium content, open mesoporous TS-1 titanosilica molecular sieves with more accessible active centres exhibit higher catalytic activity, target product selectivity and resistance to coking deactivation in green catalytic oxidation reactions using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. In this paper, TS-1 titania-silica molecular sieves without anatase, with the highest theoretical skeletal titanium content (2.0 wt%) and open mesopores (mesopore volume 0.71 cm 3 /g) were synthesised based on the ageing dry gel limited domain conversion method invented in previous research work. The intrinsic kinetics of the catalytic reaction of phenol with hydrogen peroxide for direct hydroxylation of benzenes was investigated. The effects of stirring rate, phenol concentration, hydrogen peroxide concentration, catalyst dosage and reaction temperature on the initial conversion rate of phenol were investigated, and the experimental data were fitted with a power function equation to obtain the intrinsic kinetic equation of the catalyst ( r = 2.98 × 10 6 exp ( − 56.43 × 10 3 R T ) c 1.07 ( Phenol ) c 0.10 ( H 2 O 2 ) ) \left( {{\rm{r}} = 2.98 \times {{10}^6}\,\exp \,\left( { - {{56.43 \times {{10}^3}} \over {RT}}} \right){c^{1.07}}\left( {{\rm{Phenol}}} \right){c^{0.10}}\left( {{{\rm{H}}_2}{{\rm{O}}_2}} \right)} \right) . Under the condition of eliminating the effect of internal and external diffusion, the reaction was 1.07 and 0.10 for phenol and hydrogen peroxide, respectively, with a reaction activation energy of 56.43 kJ/mol. This study provides a theoretical basis for the reactor and process design of hydroxylation of phenol to benzenediol based on this new catalyst.
Novel Copper Phosphates With High Catalytic Activities Under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Conventionally, heterogeneous catalysts are mainly focused on the materials with large surface area such as TS-1 (350 m(2 .) g(-1)), and the materials with relatively small surface area (< 10 m(2) (.) g(-1)) are generally ignored. This review summarized the catalytic activities and mechanism in a series of oxidations by H2O2 or oxygen as oxidants over novel copper phosphates with very small surface area less than 1.4 m(2) (.) g(-1). In the hydroxylation of phenol and benzene by H2O2, the high activities of this catalyst are comparable to those of TS-1. In epoxidation of styrene by H2O2, the selectivity for epoxide is much higher than that of TS-1. In hydroxylation of 2, 3, 6-trimethylphenol by H2O2, it showed good activity and high selectivity for trimethylhydroquinone. In oxidation of olefins and alcohols by O-2, the catalysts exhibited remarkable catalytic results. The characterization of ESR and IR spectroscopies shows that hydroxyl radicals and peroxide species are important intermediates in these oxidations.

Abstract:A novel complex oxide of Cu–Bi–V–O was hydrothermally synthesized in a Bi2O3–V2O5–CuO–H2O system, and it was found that this compound is catalytically active for phenol hydroxylation by H2O2, which is comparable to TS-1. Reaction temperature, solvent, the molar ratio of phenol to H2O2, reaction time, catalyst amount, and method of H2O2 addition were found to be major factors for phenol conversion and product selectivity. Furthermore, electron spin resonance (ESR) was used to characterize the reaction intermediates, two species assigned to hydroxyl radicals and hydroperoxyl radicals were observed, and the hydroxyl radicals are proposed to play important roles in the formation of products in catalytic phenol hydroxylation by H2O2.

Abstract:Direct hydroxylation of arenes to phenols with hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant is an attractive approach. In the present study, we prepared several copper (II) complexes bearing tetra- (N4), tri- (N3) and pentadentate (N5) ligands, and the copperII-N4 complex could act as an efficient catalyst for hydroxylation of benzenes with H2O2 (up to 22.4% yield of phenols with 10.0 equiv. H2O2, and 38.0% yield of phenol with limited amount of H2O2) at room temperature. X-ray crystallographic analysis indicates that the CuII-N4 complex exhibits a square-pyramidal geometry and that two methyl groups connecting to the diamine are cis to each other. In comparison, copper(II) complexes supported by tri- (N3) and pentadentate (N5) ligands were also evaluated in the hydroxylation of benzene, demonstrating inferior performance.

Abstract:Liquid phase catalytic selective hydroxylation of phenol to catechol and hydroquinone was carried out in the presence of metalloporphyrins using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and water as solvent. Five kinds of metal tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphrin (T(p-Cl)PPMCI, M = Fe, Co, Mn, Cu, Zn) were studied. It was found that T(p-Cl)PPFeCl had high catalytic activity and diphenol selectivity for the hydroxylation of phenol to catechol and hydroquitione. The influence of various reaction parameters, namely, reaction temperature, solvent, ratio of substrate and oxidant, substrate concentration, the amount of catalyst, reaction time and pH value were investigated systematically. When water was used as solvent (10 mL), the optimum conditions were following: pH = 7, the concentration of phenol was 0.3 g/mL, the molar ratio of phenol and H2O2 was 1/2, the molar ratio of catalyst and phenol was 7/100000, the reaction temperature was 65 degrees C and the reaction time was 1.5 h. Under above optimum conditions, the phenol conversion was up to 55.1%, and the selectivity of diphenol was almost up to 99.9%, the molar turnover numbers of the catalyst was about 7500. Zirconium phosphate supported copper catalyst for selective oxidation of phenol to cis, cis -muconic acid

Abstract:The selective oxidation of phenol into cis, cis -muconic acid was carried out with α-zirconium phosphate supported-copper catalysts. It has been found that a sole α-zirconium phosphate exhibited a preferential selectivity (up to 80%) towards dihydroxybenzene (Catechol/Hydroquinone=1.4:1). Moreover, the further studies indicated that α-zirconium phosphate-supported copper catalysts enable to catalyze the oxidative cleavage of catechol into high-added valuable platform molecule cis,cis -muconic acid (ccMA) by in-situ generating performic acid. A 66% conversion of phenol and 60% selectivity towards cis, cis -muconic acid were obtained under mild reaction condition (30 °C, 2 h). The detailed characterization by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, and pyridine-absorbed FT-IR techniques demonstrated that copper(II) species were highly dispersed on α-zirconium phosphate, and could be bonded with the phosphate group of the support. The forming Cu(II)-O-P linkage was proved to be catalytically active species and endowed the supported-copper catalysts with a superior recyclability. The reaction pathway involved hydroxylation of phenol to give a mixture of catechol (CL) and hydroquinone (HQ), followed by the formation of a metal-catechol complex which was then rapidly oxidized into cis, cis -muconic acid (ccMA).

Abstract:Four copper(ii) complexes with multidentate ligands, ([CuL1Cl2]), ([Cu(HL2)Cl2]), ([Cu2(L2)2](ClO4)2) and ([CuL3(HOCH3)ClO4]) {L1 = N,N-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methyl) prop-2-yn-1-amine, HL2 = 2-((((1-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)phenol and HL3 = 2-((((1-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-2-t-butyl-phenol} are reported. The complexes were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis and electrochemical analysis. Complexes and were further characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The catalytic performances of these complexes were evaluated in the direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant in aqueous acetonitrile media. Under optimized reaction conditions, complex with the most negative reduction potential exhibited the highest conversion without considering the dinuclear complex . A correlation between the catalytic efficiency and the reduction potentials of these complexes was observed, that is the more negative the reduction potential, the higher the benzene conversion. A radical mechanism for the catalysis was confirmed by the fact that addition of radical scavengers such as TEMPO into the reaction mixture could severely suppress the catalysis.

When the CuL(1)(ClO(4))(2) and CuL(2)(ClO(4))(2) were used as catalysts, 31.4 % phenol conversion was obtained with 48.1 % selectivity to diphenol and 29.9 % phenol conversion was obtained with 43.4 % selectivity to diphenol in the optimal reaction conditions.
Copper-based ternary hydrotalcite as a catalyst for hydroxylation of phenolic compounds

Abstract:Hydrotalcites with different cations were synthesized by co-precipitation method and characterized using different techniques. The catalytic activity of the hydrotalcites was studied using hydroxylation of phenol by H2O2 as a model reaction. The CuNiAl ternary hydrotalcite was found to be the best catalyst in this work; and the effects of reaction temperature, ratio of substrate:catalyst, H2O2 concentration, solvent and pH value of the medium were investigated. The results showed that under optimal reaction conditions, the conversion of phenol can reach up to 62.8%, with catechol and hydroquinone as the main products. The substrate scope was expanded to other phenol-derivatives, such as m-cresol and 3-ethylphenol. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed based on the control reactions and XPS analysis. The CuNiAl hydrotalcite shows high toxicity (the 48 h LC50 value of CuNiAl hydrotalcite was 2.12 mg/L) in the acute toxicity tests of Daphnia magna. However, after simple filtration of the solid catalyst, the 48 h LC50 value of the remaining solution was increased to 83.46 mg/L. In all, the as-synthesized CuNiAl35 hydrotalcite offers a novel biodegradation pathway for in situ treatment of phenol-contaminated water or other phenolic pollutions when applied together with dioxygenases for further degradation of resulting catechols or hydroquinones.

Abstract:Cu-MCM-41 catalysts in which the copper content could be up to 26.0% and most of the copper atoms were incorporated into the silica framework were prepared. They exhibited high catalytic activity for direct hydroxylation of benzene with H2O2. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a 52.9% conversion of benzene and 31.2% yield of phenol were obtained, which was higher than the catalysts reported in the literature using other mesoporous materials with low copper content. The influence of various reaction parameters such as the copper content, the molar ratio of H2O2/benzene, the amount of catalyst, solvents, and the reaction temperature on the catalytic activity was studied and discussed in accordance with the reaction mechanism.
