Abstract:Grass collected as part of roadside maintenance is conventionally subjected to composting, which has the disadvantage of generating significant CO2 emissions. Thus, it is crucial to find an alternative method for the utilisation of grass waste. The aim of this study was to determine the specific biogas yield (SBY) from the anaerobic mono-digestion of grass from road verges and to assess the content of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMEs) in grass in relation to the time of cutting and the preservation method of the studied material. The biochemical biogas potential (BBP) test and the FAMEs content were performed on fresh and ensiled grass collected in spring, summer, and autumn. The highest biogas production was obtained from fresh grass cut in spring (715.05 ± 26.43 NL kgVS−1), while the minimum SBY was observed for fresh grass cut in summer (540.19 ± 24.32 NL kgVS−1). The methane (CH4) content in the biogas ranged between 55.0 ± 2.0% and 60.0 ± 1.0%. The contents of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in biogas remained below the threshold values for these inhibitors. The highest level of total FAMEs was determined in fresh grass cut in autumn (98.08 ± 19.25 mg gDM−1), while the lowest level was detected in fresh grass cut in spring (56.37 ± 7.03 mg gDM−1). C16:0 and C18:0, which are ideal for biofuel production, were present in the largest amount (66.87 ± 15.56 mg gDM−1) in fresh grass cut in autumn. The ensiling process significantly impacted the content of total FAMEs in spring grass, leading to a reduction in total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and an increase in total unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs). We conclude that grass biomass collected during the maintenance of road verges is a valuable feedstock for the production of both liquid and gaseous biofuels; however, generating energy from biogas appears to be more efficient than producing biodiesel.

Enhancing biogas production from cattle manure: A circular economy approach with solar thermal pretreatment and soil conditioning

Abstract:Biogas production from cattle manure, pivotal for sustainable waste and energy management, encounters challenges from its low digestibility linked to lignocellulosic structures. This study investigates biogas efficiency enhancement through anaerobic digestion coupled with solar thermal (ST) pretreatment and digestate application in Napier grass cultivation (STAD-G). ST pretreatment at 40-60 °C for 20 h markedly increases methane yield, validated by pilot-scale trials that exhibited a 3.9-fold surge in methane production, attributed to improved acidification. Untreated manure's structure, however, impedes acidification, slowing methanogenesis as shown by lower volatile fatty acid concentration in effluents. In addition, utilizing digestate as soil conditioner notably improves grass yield (19.3 ± 0.8 ton dry/ha/year) and protein content, akin to urea fertilizer. Furthermore, the STAD-G system incurs higher upfront costs, it yields superior biogas efficiency and enhanced long-term financial returns. This integrated approach, by boosting economic and environmental sustainability, advocates for ST pretreatment as a key strategy in advancing sustainable agriculture and energy solutions.

Abstract:In alignment with the EU's Circular Economy Framework, there has been a notable shift toward biorefineries as key facilities for converting biomass into commercially viable products. The abundant availability of grass represents a substantial yet underutilized resource for promoting a shift toward bioeconomy. This study aimed to improve the value chain of meadow grass by producing biogas, bio-based fertilizers, and lactic acid, and to determine the revenue potential from these products, addressing the critical challenge of optimizing biomass processing to maximize its value. Consequently, the grass samples were processed with three pretreatment techniques—milling, ensiling, and milling followed by ensiling—and then tested for their methane potential. Furthermore, the milled and ensiled grass was also subjected to an acid treatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis, and the hydrolysate was assessed for lactic acid production using Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Pediococcus acidilactici . Our findings revealed that milled and ensiled fraction showcased an increase of 17% yielding 75 m 3 CH 4 /tFM compared to untreated grass. Additionally, the hydrolysate derived from the milled and ensiled fraction stream achieves notable lactic acid production, reaching 240 kg LA/t FM using L. delbrueckii . Anaerobic digestion of ensiled grass can yield considerable benefits, with cost savings of 87 €/tFM for electricity and heat, and 19 €/tDM if used as a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. Alternatively, using this grass fraction for lactic acid production could generate 434 €/tFM in revenue. Further studies are required to assess the broader feasibility and implications of scaling up this approach.

Abstract:Methane fermentation, which is one of the key processes in biogas production, plays an important role in the conversion of biomass to energy. During this process, changes occur in the chemical composition of organic feedstocks, including the chemical composition of grasses. The assessment of these changes is crucial for the efficiency and productivity of biogas production. The material for this study comprised fully mature grass blades with leaves and inflorescences and was collected from extensively used meadows and pastures, as well as cultivated and set-aside areas in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, the communes of Białośliwie and Trzcianka, Poland. The aim of this study was to compare methane fermentation efficiency in nine grass species and identify the biomass component involved in biogas production. The results indicate that the fermentation process, as expected, changed the cellulose content. The lignin content of the grasses before fermentation varied more than the cellulose content. The content of holocellulose (sum of carbohydrate components) in the grasses ranged from 59.77 to 72.93% before fermentation. Methane fermentation significantly reduced the carbohydrate content in the grasses, with a low degree of polymerization. Grassland biomass-based biogas production is a viable alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

Abstract:The presented study deals with the use of legumes intercropped with maize for the production of biogas from silage. The main goal was to find out whether silages made from mixed cultures can be used in biogas production and how the use of such silages affects qualitative and quantitative parameters of the fermentation process compared with the pure maize silage. Variants prepared were pure cultures of maize, bean, lupin, and white sweet clover. In addition, mixed cultures were prepared of maize and individual legumes. Measured values showed that in terms of dry matter (DM) yield, mixed culture silages are almost of the same or even better quality than silage made from the maize monosubstrate. Compared with the maize monoculture silage, the presence of white lupine, white sweet clover, and broad bean in silages statistically significantly increased the content of DM, ash, and acid detergent fiber (by more than 5%). Bean and lupine in mixed silages with maize significantly increased the content of lipids (on average by more than 1.2%). Legumes in silages were significantly decreasing contents of neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, and starch. Production of biogas from silages of maize monosubstrates and mixed substrates of maize with white lupin, maize with white sweet clover, and maize with broad bean was directly proportional to the content of CAR and starch in these substrates. A perspective variant was the mixed substrate of maize and sweet clover from which biogas production was only 6% lower than that from conventional maize silage. The highest yield was recorded in the maize monosubstrate (0.923 m3/kgVS). Variants of mixed substrates had a yield ranging from 0.804 to 0.840 m3/kgVS.

Abstract:Biogas is an excellent renewable fuel providing gas for clean energy applications and fertilizers for organic farming. In the present study, seeds from four tree species of Acacia nilotica, Albizia lebbeck, Prosopis juliflora , and Leucaena leucocephala have been utilized for biogas production as alternative feedstocks. They have been investigated in a mixed-feeding mode in a single digester to tackle the feedstock availability and seasonality challenges. The investigations were conducted in a 300 L anaerobic digester for 120 days under daily feeding mode. The average specific biogas yield and specific methane yield was found to be 0.425 m3/kg of volatile solids and 0.228 m3/kg of volatile solids, respectively. The average volumetric methane content in biogas was 54.7%. This paper presents a unique study on anaerobic digestion of selected seeds in a mixed-feeding mode to provide broad opportunities for their efficient and sustainable utilization.

Abstract:The co-digestion of untreated Napier grass (NG) and industrial hydrolyzed food waste (FW) was carried out in the batch reactor to investigate the effect of substrate ratios on biogas production performance. Two-stage anaerobic digestion was performed with an initial substrate concentration of 5 g VS added /L and a Food to Microorganism Ratio (F/M) of 0.84. The 1:1 ratio of the NG and FW showed the optimum performances on biogas production yield with a value of 1,161.33 mL/g VS added after 60 days of digestion. This was followed by the data on methane yield and concentration were 614.37 mL/g VS added and 67.29%, respectively. The results were similar to the simulation results using a modified Gompertz model, which had a higher potential methane production and maximum production rate, as well as a shorter lag phase and a coefficient of determination of 0.9945. These findings indicated that the co-digestion of Napier grass and hydrolyzed food waste can enhance biogas production in two-stage anaerobic digestion.

Abstract:This article presents the current state of biogas (biomethane) production technology with an example of using cow manure from the perspective of photofermentation efficiency. In specialist farms, there is a problem of waste management in the form of manure; analyses were carried out on the photocatalysis process in order to be able to effectively produce biomethane based on monosubstrate solutions (manure). Cow manure was tested for its elemental composition in order to determine the suitability of this raw material for biogas production. The elemental composition was compared in material A, which was stored for 1 week (fresh sample, wet), and material B, which was stored for 1 month (old sample, dry). In material A and material B, the values were as follows: N: 3.18% and 3.34%; P: 0.403% and 0.492%; K: 1.267% and 2.336%; Na: 0.362% and 0.714%; Ca: 0.705% and 0.788%; and Mg: 0.737% and 0.907%. The quality of biogas produced in atmospheric conditions from cow manure (material A and material B) was assessed. An increase in CH4 production was observed with an increase in temperature. For material A, at a temperature of 22.5 °C, it was in the range of 11–14%; for a temperature of 25.5 °C, it was approx. 35%. For material B, despite small amounts (from 0% to 2%), a tendency to increase CH4 production with an increase in temperature was also observed. At 22.4 °C, it was in the range of 0–1%, and at 25.4 °C, it was about 2%. The novelty of this article is the development of an innovative method of using cow manure, indicating the development of the biomethane industry.

Abstract:In a world facing increasing environmental and energy challenges, anaerobic digestion of agrifood by-products and food waste could contribute to the production of green energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Anaerobic digestion is a biological process capable of breaking down and stabilising organic matter in the absence of oxygen and converting it into a renewable source of energy, known as biogas. Biomethane production also enables the generation of electricity and produces digestate, a by-product of the digestion process that can be used as a soil conditioner or fertiliser. This review aims to highlight how substrate pretreatment, together with the optimisation of operating parameters, application of additives, recirculation of digestate and frequent feeding, can increase biogas production. An overview of the basics of the anaerobic digestion of agrifood by-products and food waste is provided, including feedstock characteristics (nutrient content, particle size and inhibitory compounds) and process parameters (process configuration, pH, temperature, total and volatile solids, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium, chemical oxygen demand, carbon/nitrogen ratio, retention time, organic loading rate, etc.). In addition, recent studies in the field of processes, equipment and pretreatments that can significantly improve the anaerobic digestion process of agricultural and food wastes were classified and discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of biogas production from the agrifood sector are addressed.

Abstract:The need of renewable energy is paramount important as it is expected to replace fossil energy. One of renewable energy commonly used for rural area is biomass-based energy. Biogas is a biomass-based energy where organic materials are converted to methane gas via anaerobic digestion process. The limitations of mono-feedstock biogas are instability digestion process, low yield biogas produced and require readjusting C/N ratio, therefore co-digestion process was proposed to overcome these problems. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of a mixture of cattle manure and bagasse residue in different weight ratio combinations. Biogas was generated by anaerobic digestion using a mixed substrate composed of a combination of weight ratios of bagasse:cattle manure (1:5, 1:2, 1:1, and 3:1). The kinetic analysis was evaluated by fitting Gompertz and Logistic model to experimental data of cumulative biogas. The result showed that the combination of 1:5 ratio of bagasse waste to cattle manure obtained the best biogas yield with cumulative biogas at 31,000 mL. The kinetic model of Gompertz and Logistic were able to predict the maximum cumulative biogas at ratio of 1:5 (cattle: bagasse) at 31,157.66 mL and 30,112.12 mL, respectively. The other predictions of kinetic parameters were maximum biogas production rate (Rm)= 1,720.45 mL/day and 1,652.31 mL/day for Gompertz and Logistic model, respectively. Lag periods were obtained at 2.403 day and 2.612 day for Gompertz and Logistic model, respectively. The potential power generation of 338.71 Watt has been estimated from biogas. This research has proven a positive feasibility of co-digestion of two feed-stocks (cattle manure and bagasse) for biogas production.

Abstract:Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is an underutilized lignocellulosic biomass that has several benefits such as high availability, renewability, and biomass yield. The grass press-juice obtained from the mechanical pretreatment can be used for the bio-based production of chemicals. Lactic acid is a platform chemical that has attracted consideration due to its broad area of applications. For this reason, the more sustainable production of lactic acid is expected to increase. In this work, lactic acid was produced using complex medium at the bench- and reactor scale, and the results were compared to those obtained using an optimized press-juice medium. Bench-scale fermentations were carried out in a pH-control system and lactic acid production reached approximately 21.84 ± 0.95 g/L in complex medium, and 26.61 ± 1.2 g/L in press-juice medium. In the bioreactor, the production yield was 0.91 ± 0.07 g/g, corresponding to a 1.4-fold increase with respect to the complex medium with fructose. As a comparison to the traditional ensiling process, the ensiling of whole grass fractions of different varieties harvested in summer and autumn was performed. Ensiling showed variations in lactic acid yields, with a yield up to 15.2% dry mass for the late-harvested samples, surpassing typical silage yields of 6–10% dry mass.

Abstract:Dried grass silage (GS) was pre-treated at different NaOH loading rates (1%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% by volatile solids (VS) mass in grass silage) and temperatures (20 °C, 60 °C, 100 °C and 150 °C) to determine effects on its bio-degradability in terms of the hydrolysis yield and degradation of ligno-cellulosic materials for biogas production. At 100 °C and the four NaOH loadings, up to 45% of the total COD was solubilised and up to 65.6%, 36.1% and 21.2% of lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose were removed, respectively; biological methane production potentials obtained were 359.5, 401.8, 449.5 and 452.5 ml CH₄/g VS added, respectively, being improved by 10-38.9% in comparison with untreated GS. VS removals following anaerobic digestion were 67.6%, 76.9%, 85.3%, 95.2% and 96.7% for untreated GS and GS treated at the four NaOH loadings, respectively. 100 °C and the NaOH loading rate of 5% is recommended as a proper GS pre-treatment condition.

Abstract:This research aims to analyze the non-financial feasibility of using livestock waste as raw material for biogas. Qualitative data was obtained to provide an overview of the cattle farming business, the implementation of waste processing with a biogas installation, where the final result is biogas which can be utilized by livestock breeder groups and the community around the installation. The feasibility of this activity is determined using the differential semantic scale formula. The results of the non-financial feasibility analysis show that the business of using livestock waste as raw material for biogas is feasible to develop in terms of market aspects, technical aspects, management aspects, as well as social and environmental aspects. The two biogas installations granted by the regional government were able to help the community save energy.

Abstract:During using biogas as fuel for diesel engines, it is necessary to clean it from hydrogen sulfide, water and carbon dioxide, as well as to compressing it to fill cylinders more efficiently. Today the production of biogas in agriculture is the disposal of crop waste and manure from livestock farms.This approach is very actual, at the first stage of its implementation was planned to create the necessary material and technical base to widespread using of non-traditional energy sources, including organic biomass energy (fertilizer, crop waste, etc.). In addition, environmental protection, which also requires intensive and rational processing of animal waste, is very closely connected with the problem of waste disposal. This necessitates the search for processing methods that would ensure the comprehensive utilization of its agricultural, energy, feed and other properties. This article presents the technology for processing the utilization of manure using microbial synthesis. When processing manure in anaerobic conditions, the threshold lowered for its smell, germination of weed seeds, helminths die, and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) are completely preserved. The resulting biological gas contains up to 70 % methane, and its calorific value is 24 MJ/M3. The introduction of low-waste, resource-saving technologies with mechanization and automation of production processes plays an important role in the environment protection issues from livestock complexes waste in their further development. At present, there are several directions of processing of agricultural and water waste. At the same time, processing of animal waste with the use of biogas plants gives a significant socio-economic effect, expressed in improving working conditions, increasing the production culture and land use. Moreover, the environment protection rask is being solved.

Abstract:The presented set of data brings results of the experimental production of biogas and methane from silages of alternative substrates consisting of maize and three leguminous species with a potential to make the production of biogas more friendly to the environment because the cultivation of legumes is generally considered to be more environment friendly than the cultivation of maize: white sweet clover (Melilotus albus Medik.), fodder vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). Obtained data allow to compare the composition of experimental substrates and their important parameters (VS, DM, NDF, ADF, CF, starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, CP, lipids and ADL) as well as the yield of biogas, methane and methane in biogas from silage produced as a monosubstrate from the biomass of maize shreddings on the one side with silages produced from the mixture of biomass from maize and diverse legumes on the other side. This set of data can contribute to awareness about possibilities for reducing environmental risks connected with the cultivation of maize in growers of energy crops and operators of biogas plants. The reason is that a considerable number of farmers do not use new technologies of growing biomass for the production of biogas as they cannot quantify the potential impact on biogas yield and hence on the profitability of biogas plant operation. The measured values demonstrate that silages made from the mixed culture were reaching at least the same production of biogas and its quality as the monocultural maize silage.

Abstract:The renewable energy sources (VIE) widespread using makes it possible the fossil fuels’ consumption that pollute the environment reducing significantly. One of the VIE types is biomass, which tends the agricultural production, especially livestock intensification growing. The main type of biomass is manure; at it processing by biogas technology using, it provides biogas, biofertilizer and electric energy, that are necessary for soil fertility and energy supply to rural consumers increasing. At the same time, biogas technology helps the manure disinfection’s problems solving, since fresh manure is an environmental pollutant by harmful gases (methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, etc.) emitting. The livestock methane emissions’ amount is about 16%. The authors have developed small sized biogas manure processing installation, to the small agricultural enterprises’ conditions adapting. Distinctive features of the installation are: sawdust from reed plants for manure preparation loading into the bioreactor; of an external energy source from renewable resources (sun, wind, etc.) to heat the bioreactor in cold weather using; biofertilizer into dry residue and liquid separating; manure different types to carbon and nitrogen at C /N = 20 ratio mixing. These features make it possible the quality of biofertilizer, since reed plants contain vitamins C, carotene, starch, carbohydrates and proteins improving, as well as the crust formation to prevent; of biogas by observing the temperature regime inside the reactor and the ratio C /N = 20 output increasing; manure next fresh portion is accelerated by liquid part feeding of the biofertilizer back into the bioreactor’s process fermentation.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) involves a set of microbiological reactions and physio-chemical processes to generate biogas, a mixture of predominantly CH4 and CO2. It is commercialized globally; however, AD has limited commercial applications in the U.S. compared to other regions of the world. The main objective of this article is to review different studies on socio-economic and environmental aspects and policies of biogas/biomethane production and to focus on resource availability. The key outcome from this review shows that the anaerobic digestion of food waste and animal manure has great potential to achieve economic and environmental benefits compared to other waste management techniques such as landfilling or conventional manure management. The 12 life cycle assessment (LCA) studies reviewed showed lower impacts for biogas systems and indicated a need for standardization of methodology so that alternative production concepts can be objectively compared. Similarly, economic analyses showed higher profitability for a biogas combined heat and power facility compared to a biomethane facility. By considering a review of the sustainability of biogas, we presented a new multi-criteria sustainable assessment framework that includes three domains: i. resource availability and logistics, ii. process modeling, and iii. impact assessment with primary application to the optimum location and installation of sustainable biogas/biomethane plants in the U.S.
Mixed Culture of Corn and White Lupine as an Alternative to Silage Made from Corn Monoculture Intended for Biogas Production

Abstract:The production of biomass from legumes for energy purposes is considered an important element of sustainable agriculture. Leguminous plants allow the biological fixation of nitrogen (BFN), which contributes to reduction in the input of mineral fertilizers, and hence lightens the environmental burden. Replacing mineral inputs into crop production using BFN (the production of silage) represents an important step towards achieving greater sustainability of biogas station operation. This paper deals with the possibility of using silage prepared from a mixture of conventional energy crops—corn and legume (lupine) in biogas stations. The aim of the paper was to find out how the addition of legume affects the production of methane and to determine the optimal ratio of maize and lupine in silage. Different variants of silage were prepared: without the addition of legume (sole corn), with the addition of lupine at different ratios (50/50, 70/30, 90/10), and sole lupine. This silage was subjected to fermentation tests and analyzed in order to determine the nutrient content effect on the fermentation process. The lowest total methane production was detected in the lupine silage and the highest total methane production was observed in the maize silage (0.327 m3 CH4/kg VS) and in the mixed silage 90/10 (0.330 m3 CH4/kg of VS). It was found that with the increasing proportion of lupine in the silage, methane production (50/50 < 70/30 < 90/10) declines due to the increased content of poorly degradable organic substances.Graphical

Abstract:Lemongrass is the raw material for lemongrass oil production. Indonesia is one of the ten largest lemongrass oil producing countries in the world. Lemongrass oil industry will be generated large amount of lemongrass waste. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) substitution with lemongrass waste on high forage feed on in vitro rumen fermentation. This study was arranged with randomized block design with 5 treatments (100R: 0% lemongrass waste, 75R: 25% lemongrass waste, 50R: 50% lemongrass waste, 25R: 75% lemongrass waste, and 0R: 100% lemongrass waste) and 4 different rumen collecting time as block. The results showed that the substitution of grass with lemongrass waste did not give a significant difference to dry matter content, but it could reduce protein content and increase crude fiber and crude fat significantly (P <0.05). The results of the in vitro analysis showed that lemongrass substitution did not affect pH, gas production rate, butyric acid, valeric acid, iso-butyric acid, and iso-valeric acid both in terms of quantity and proportion. The used of lemongrass by 25% (75R) was not affected on organic matter, potential gas production and methane production (24 hours) but decreased protein content and increased lag time significantly (p <0.05). The used of lemongrass by 50% was significantly reduce methane gas production (P <0.05). The increased of lemongrass waste concentration was affected partial VFA profile by decreasing in the amount of acetic acid. A significant decreased in the A/P ratio occurred in the used of lemongrass by 100%. Lemongrass waste could be used as elephant grass substituted up to 25% in high-forage feed without decreasing potential gas production, digestibility, and partial total VFA.
A comparative analysis of perennial grass-legume mixtures for biomethane production

Abstract:Examining the case of Lithuania, this study comparatively analyzed five perennial grass-legume mixtures in terms of biomethane production. Every mixture was divided into two parts: long (during the fifth year or beyond) and short (during the first four years) time periods. The analysis includes three types of perennial bell grass: Timothy, P. Ryegrass, C. Cocksfoot, and one legume grass Red clover. With this study, we aimed to evaluate how perennial grass-legume mixtures can promote biomethane uptake in Lithuania. Through analyzing the efficiency and consequences of government subsidy measures, this study aimed to address the question of how governmental assistance can promote the growth of the biomethane industry, specifically focusing on the utilization of perennial grass-legume mixtures. This study used seven financial indicators, including subsiding policy, in order to gain a deeper understanding of mixtures for biomethane production. The analysis revealed that the best mixtures for biomethane production with subsidies were the second (Red clover 35 % + Timothy 45 % + Ryegrass 20 % grass mixture) and fourth scenarios (Red clover 55 % + Ryegrass 45 % grass mixture). The first (Red clover 35 %. + Timothy 25 % + Ryegrass 20 % + Cocksfoot 20 % grass mixture), third (Red clover 55 % + Timothy 45 % grass mixture), and fifth scenarios (Red clover 55 % + Cocksfoot 45 % grass mixture) had the smallest positive effects. The results showed that, in Lithuania, in order to encourage farmers to produce biomethane, subsidy policies are needed. Incentives for engaging with this activity are necessary, as the income earned does not cover the costs incurred; unfortunately, biomethane production is unprofitable without subsidy. As such, our recommendation is to develop a long-term subsidy policy to promote biomethane production, focusing on the effectiveness, particularly in the Lithuanian context, of utilizing mixtures of perennial grasses. Further research and policy interventions are needed to address the opportunities associated with scaling synergy between perennial energy cops and environmental sustainability in bioenergy crop cultivation.
