Abstract:Abstract The ocean has often been announced as a sustainable source of important materials for civilization. Application of the same extraction processes to desalination concentrate, rather than to unconcentrated seawater, will necessarily be more energetically favorable, so the expansion of seawater desalination in recent decades brings this dream closer to reality. However, there is relatively little concrete commercial development of ‘concentrate mining’. This review assesses the technical and economic prospects for utilization of commercially viable products from seawater. The most important technologies for economic use of products from desalination plant concentrate are technologies for more economic separation and technologies for more economic concentration. The most promising separation technologies are those, such as nanofiltration, which separate brine into streams enriched/depleted in entire classes of constituents with minimal input of energy and reagents. Concentration is becoming more economic due to rapid advances in Osmotically-Assisted RO technology. Despite very active research on many aspects of desalination concentrate utilization, it is likely that commercial development of the non-NaCl components of desalination brine will depend on the available market for NaCl, as the challenges and costs of extracting the other mineral components from bitterns in which they are highly enriched are so much less than those faced in direct treatment of brines.

Abstract:Processes for separating solutes from water, including desalination, are based on synthetic membranes using the forward osmosis (FO) technique. The industrial-level success of these membrane techniques has been astounding. Modern desalination membranes, however, cannot extract a single metal ion with precision from a commingled ion solution. Lithium, cobalt, uranium, and other energy-critical elements will soon be in greater demand than they can meet, thus elevating their importance as geopolitical resources. Critical metals can be found in seawater, an essential yet unconventional supply. Gold mining and ore processing are activities of great economic importance. However, they are related to generating extremely polluted effluents containing high concentrations of heavy metals and low pH. The review highlights the most recent design and deployment of FO desalination technologies, their application in sea mining, and the remaining challenges and prospects. This work also highlights the enormous potential of FO sea mining and how it is crucial to optimize the operating parameters, including draw solutions and energy consumption, and raise attention toward the economic aspect and market diffusion of FO sea mining.

Abstract:Desalination brine is extremely concentrated saline water; it contains various salts, nutrients, heavy metals, organic contaminants, and microbial contaminants. Conventional disposal of desalination brine has negative impacts on natural and marine ecosystems that increase the levels of toxicity and salinity. These issues demand the development of brine management technologies that can lead to zero liquid discharge. Brine management can be productive by adopting economically feasible methodologies, which enables the recovery of valuable resources like freshwater, minerals, and energy. This review focuses on the recent advances in brine management using various membrane/thermal-based technologies and their applicability in water, mineral, and energy recoveries, considering their pros and cons. This review also exemplifies the hybrid processes for metal recovery and zero liquid discharge that may be adopted, so far, as an appropriate futuristic strategy. The data analyzed and outlook presented in this review could definitely contribute to the development of economically achievable future strategies for sustainable brine management.

Abstract:Amid the global call for decarbonization efforts, uranium and lithium are two important metal resources critical for securing a sustainable energy future. Extraction of uranium and lithium from seawater has gained broad interest in recent years due to the thousand-fold higher quantity available as compared to land-based reserves, but the challenge lies in the ability to extract them at ultralow concentrations. Over the past two decades, the rise of nanotechnology has brought together an abundance of adsorptive materials that are poised to incentivize technologies capable of achieving high extraction performances. The objective of this review is to consolidate recent advances in uranium and lithium extraction from the standpoint of adsorptive materials and technologies for application in seawater. First, adsorptive materials for uranium extraction are reviewed, before we discuss the technology platforms into which they can be deployed ( e.g. , membrane-based adsorption). Second, a comprehensive review of lithium extraction technologies is presented by examining the materials and platforms capable of achieving high extraction performances. Since the scope of this review is geared towards application in seawater and desalination brines (in particular, seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) brine), we highlight the main challenges to date – selectivity required against competing ions and long-term stability against marine biofouling. Then, we put together an outlook, featuring our perspectives on next-generation materials and techno-economic analysis. Since the properties of desalination brines are unique from those of seawater, we also distinguish the traits of next-generation materials to be used for SWRO brines to provide insights for advancing new tailored materials and technologies for application in the latter. Overall, this review sums up state-of-the-art technologies for uranium and lithium extraction, putting into perspective various technology platforms to realize high extraction performances that can address our future demands for uranium and lithium at the water-energy nexus.

Abstract:The production of brines with high TDS level from desalination or oil field extraction activities represents both a major technical challenge and an economical opportunity. Brine management requires careful evaluation of environmental impact, application discharge regulations and economic feasibility, which can vary significantly depending on the method of disposal and treatment. Brine management may be achieved directly by brine disposal, whereby safe discharge of brine is performed to surface water, sewage systems, injections wells or evaporation ponds, or through specific brine treatments, which involve the concentration of solutes from the brine solutions to solid residues to lower the liquid waste volume and tend to zero liquid discharge strategies. This review also emphasizes on circular brine valorization by critically overviewing the extraction processes of value elements such as lithium, uranium, cobalt and cesium from the saturated brines or residues as these elements are rare and hold high economic value. The circularity of brine management is further elaborated by analyzing the current technologies that use brines for carbon capture. The prospects of improving the brine management technologies have also been highlighted to enhance the process sustainability.

Abstract:Mining valuable minerals from desalination concentrate is a promising path to improve resource utilization efficiency and reduce the environmental impact.With the rapid expansion of the desalination industry and the improvement of extraction technology, the comprehensive utilization of desalination concentrate is approaching commercial reality.This paper summarized the development status of the desalination industry within and outside China.On this basis, the economic potential of valuable minerals mining from seawater desalination concentrate was estimated.Our results showed that when the in-operation membrane desalination projects in China run at full capacity, the discharge of seawater concentrate is about 1,696,900 m 3 /d.The high commercial potential chemicals are boron, lithium, and rubidium because of their high concentration and unit price.If continuous production can be achieved, its economic value will be more than desalinated water production.In addition, this paper summarized the extraction technologies of magnesium, potassium, rubidium, boron, strontium, and lithium in desalination concentrate.

Abstract:Geothermal water, salt lakes, and seawater all contain large quantities of valuable minerals such as brine and lithium. Lithium (Li), a range of non-metallic and metallic elements that are extracted from brine in various ranges, has attracted a lot of attention recently because of its rapidly increasing demand. Desalination's concentrated brine, a by-product, has a much greater amount of priceless minerals for Li extraction since it is superior to other brine sources. To meet the increased demand for Li, there has been significant progress achieved, most recently in the creation of innovative advancements that make salinity concentrate more quickly and effectively. This study's goal is to point out recent accomplishments in this sector, beginning with the relevance of Li extraction from brine and moving on to recent developments in the numerous without-evaporation approaches suggested in the written word. Regarding sustainability, economics, and likewise ideas, these technologies similarly present significant obstacles. To increase the overall effectiveness of the process, research must concentrate on hybrid technologies rather than standalone ones for the effective exploitation of desalination brines. To make these breakthrough technologies commercially feasible, techno- and socio-economic evaluations are also necessary.

Abstract:Traditional mining practices not only cause severe environmental issues, but also face the problem of insufficient production capacity of gold to meet its growing demand. The proposed alternative strategies for gold production, such as the extraction of gold from seawater, still keep a formidable challenge due to their strong dependence on adsorbent materials with high capacity, selectivity, and sensitivity, while also needing to meet the demands of being environmentally friendly and cost-effective. In practice, the direct extraction of gold from seawater is limited by its extremely low yield and high energy expenditure. However, if the combination of gold extraction techniques with seawater desalination can substantially reduce the energy consumption, the extraction of gold from seawater will become economical and feasible. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of marine gold extraction using reduced graphene oxide membranes (rGOM) during the seawater desalination process. The rGOM can adsorb almost all Au3+ from the solutions with trace concentrations of Au3+ ranging from 10 ppb to 200 ppb. The adsorption quantity is linearly related to the concentration, indicating that the adsorption capacity of rGOM is much higher than the total amount of Au3+ in the solution. Additionally, the rGOM can selectively adsorb 99 % of Au3+ in the mixed solution while hardly adsorbing other common elements in seawater. More importantly, the rGOM exhibits the long-term stability over 30 days when being immersed in the solution, making it directly compatible with the existing seawater desalination processes. These specific properties allow the rGOM to be an ideal candidate for combining the extraction of gold from seawater with seawater desalination processes. Our findings provide a methodology for enhancing the economic efficiency of the extraction of gold from seawater and hold promise for addressing the problem of gold scarcity.

Abstract:Uranium is one of the important nuclear resource.Extracting uranium from seawater is considered to be a promising way that can resolve the uranium resource shortage in the future.The recent progress of China in the uranium adsorption materials used in seawater has been summarized in this paper.It was concluded that the matrix structure and the micro function configuration played an important role in the uranium absorption performance through comparing different material types such as polymer materials,carbon materials,silicate material,etc.Combined with the theoretical calculation and domestic scale test in real seawater,it is proposed that the uranium adsorption materials have application value only with large specific surface area,excellent uranium selectively absorption ability and stable in the open flow seawater system.

Abstract:There are abundant uranium resources in the ocean, from the perspective of resource utilization and ecological environmental protection, seawater uranium extraction is a way to regenerate uranium resources with high potential value. Due to the advantages of low cost, simple operation, practicality and environmental friendliness, the adsorption method has become one of the most commonly used and effective techniques for uranium extraction from seawater. This review first introduces commonly used adsorbents, mainly including carbon-based materials, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), biopolymers, amidoxime based materials and so on. Then, the main influencing factors of seawater uranium extraction by adsorption are listed, mainly including coexisting metal ions, salinity, pH, temperature and biofouling. Next, some experimental examples of the application of advanced techniques to speculate on reaction mechanisms such as coordination, chelation, electrostatic attraction, and adsorptive photocatalytic synergy are presented. Finally, this review puts forward the opportunities and challenges that still exist in seawater uranium extraction, and looks forward to its development prospects on this basis. The overview will help readers to further understand the key technologies of seawater uranium extraction and to discover more efficient and environmentally friendly materials for seawater uranium extraction, which is significant to support the development of nuclear power industry.

Abstract:Water resource management impacts almost all aspects of the economy, in particular health, food production and security, domestic water supply and sanitation, energy, industry and environmental sustainability. For the last several decades, seawater has become an important source of fresh water as it is one of the most abundant resources on earth. Desalination is the process of removal of salts from seawater and is postulated to be a core technology in alleviating this problem. Clathrate hydrate based desalination (HyDesal) is a potential technology for seawater desalination. Salts are excluded from hydrate formation, thereby resulting in solid hydrate and concentrated brine. After separation from brine, the solid hydrate crystals upon dissociation produce pure water. In this work, a detailed review of the literature (both patents and publications) so far on HyDesal is critically evaluated, and prospects and directions to commercialize the HyDesal process are presented. Further, innovation by coupling LNG cold energy with HyDesal can make it economically attractive and can strengthen the energy–water nexus.

This paper provides a concise overview of the mineral resources found in the deep sea, highlighting the challenges associated with their exploitation. Furthermore, it presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of deep-sea mining technology and equipment, offering valuable insights into this field. By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

Abstract:The scarcity of fresh water due to the rapid growth of population and industrial activities has increased attention on desalination process as an alternative freshwater supply. In desalination process, a large volume of saline water is treated to produce freshwater while a concentrated brine is discharged back into the environment. The concentrated brine contains a high concentration of salt and also chemicals used during desalination operations. Due to environmental impacts arising from improper treatment of the brine and more rigorous regulations of the pollution control, many efforts have been devoted to minimize, treat, or reuse the rejected brine. One of the most promising alternatives for brine handling is reusing the brine which can reduce pollution, minimize waste volume, and recover valuable salt. Integration of desalination and salt production can be implemented to reuse the brine by recovering water and the valuable salts. The integrated processes can achieve zero liquid discharge, increase water recovery, and produce the profitable salt which can reduce the overall desalination cost. This paper gives an overview of desalination processes and the brine impacts. The integrated processes, including their progress and advantages in dual-purpose desalination and salt production are discussed.

Abstract:At a time when worldwide water shortage is increasing, seawater is being viewed as an inexhaustible supply of freshwater via the process of seawater desalination. As a result, seawater desalination is becoming more popular, especially in areas where freshwater is scarce, such as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), which accounts for half of all global saltwater desalination activities. To enhance the efficiency of saltwater desalination, thermal and membrane-based desalination technologies are continually being developed and hybridized systems established. Brine is an unavoidable product of seawater desalination and is commonly disposed of in oceans and seas, where it has negative effects on the surrounding marine environment and its biodiversity due to the resultant increased salinity and temperature, as well as the presence of chemicals. Furthermore, the quality and amount of brine are influenced by several parameters, including the input quality and quantity, the desalination process, and the discharge method. The intensity of brine's influence on the marine biota is determined by a number of factors; nevertheless, marine species differ in their tolerance to brine's effects. Desalination technology is improving to maximize water recovery and reduce the volume of brine produced, with the objective of eventually reaching zero liquid discharge and limiting harmful effects on the marine environment. Meanwhile, proper systems for analyzing the effects of seawater desalination facilities on the marine ecology must be implemented. This review study will look at all of the factors that determine the physicochemical features of desalination brine, with a focus on its impact on marine chemistry and biodiversity. More crucially, the most cutting-edge brine management methods will be investigated for long-term desalination and a healthy marine ecosystem.

Abstract:Rapid industrialization, improved standards of living, growing economies and ever-increasing population has led to the unprecedented exploitation of the finite and non-renewable resources of minerals in past years. It was observed that out of 100 BMT of raw materials processed annually only 10% is recycled back. This has resulted in a strenuous burden on natural or primary resources of minerals (such as ores) having limited availability. Moreover, severe environmental concerns have been raised by the huge piles of waste generated at landfill sites. To resolve these issues, 'Urban Mining' from waste or secondary resources in a Circular Economy' concept is the only sustainable solution. The objective of this review is to critically examine the availability, elemental composition, and the market potential of the selected secondary resources such as lignocellulosic/algal biomass, desalination water, sewage sludge, phosphogypsum, and e-waste for minerals sequestration. This review showed that, secondary resources have potential to partially replace the minerals required in different sectors such as macro and microelements in agriculture, rare earth elements (REEs) in electrical and electronics industry, metals in manufacturing sector and precious elements such as gold and platinum in ornamental industry. Further, inputs from the selected life cycle analysis (LCA) & techno economic analysis (TEA) were discussed which showed that although, urban mining has a potential to reduce the greenhouse gaseous (GHG) emissions in a sustainable manner however, process improvements through innovative, novel and cost-effective pathways are essentially required for its large-scale deployment at industrial scale in future.

Abstract:The scientific community has profoundly relied on the recovery of various elements with special inference on the renewable energy-powered desalination of wastewater. Advanced developments in modern science and technology allow them to accomplish the aforesaid target using the various desalination approaches including zero discharge technology, multi-stage flash, multi-effect distillation, vapor compression, electrodialysis and membrane distillation. The recent advancements in the distribution of novel concepts over the treatment strategies allow the research community to integrate the green energy-based approaches with solar energy-efficient strategies as a renewable energy-powered desalination approach. There have been a number of advantages and disadvantages are concerned with the all the discussed approaches. However, the green-based technologies have well proven to be more preferred technology than the conventional approaches since the energy consumption, production cost and efficiency are noted to be reliable for these green-based approaches.

Abstract:Freshwater scarcity, caused by population growth and climate change, has boosted demand for desalination technologies. This paper examines both thermal and membrane-based desalination methods, with a particular emphasis on the environmental difficulties posed by brine, a concentrated byproduct of these processes. Novel brine management techniques, such as crystallization and resource recovery, are explored as long-term alternatives to conventional disposal methods, providing opportunities to reduce environmental harm while increasing resource efficiency. Furthermore, the paper looks at the regulatory frameworks that control brine discharge, and discusses the limits of present technologies, such as the requirement for chemical pretreatment and high membrane replacement costs. By highlighting these improvements, the paper provides insights into improving the sustainability and efficiency of desalination techniques.

Abstract:The exhaustion of clean water is a rising concern in terms of water scarcity and the water–energy nexus where photothermal desalination could solve the predicament. This review provides cognizance on solar‐to‐thermal conduction mechanisms, as well as water‐pumping and salt‐rejection, which is explained through capillary action. New‐generation nanostructures such as nanomembrane, Janus nanoarchitecture, and reticular materials could enable water purification. Photothermal interfacial evaporation (PTIE) draws the attention of researchers owing to its eco‐friendly approach of obtaining purified potable water from unusable seawater. The salience behind this technology ensures an indispensable commodity highly accessible via implementation of localized heating principles to vaporize seawater at water/air interface, instead of excessive energy consuming bulk‐water evaporating desalination systems. The significance of any technology depends on its component, and photothermal desalination technology lies on its material. In this review, focus on ultramodern nanomembranes, Janus nanoarchitectures, and reticular materials as promising solar–thermal nanostructures is highlighted. This report aims to inspire novel advancements in nanomaterials for photothermal desalination by providing cognizance into the mechanisms of photothermal conversion and principles of capillary action to construct innovative water pathway to continuously pump water with excellent salt‐rejecting feature, thereby enhancing PTIE performance. With desalination as the focus, insights into vapor condensation for the collection of desalinated water are discussed. Furthermore, reports on innovative solar‐driven water purification projects undertaken by different countries to be in action in the near future are incorporated. Abstract:The shortage of freshwater is becoming a major threat to sustainable environmental development. Water desalination techniques provide solutions for freshwater requirements. Solar energy is considered as a plentiful and effortlessly available renewable energy. Desalination with solar energy is a suitable technique to convert brackish water into fresh water and that has received greater attention. The traditional desalination processes require a substantial quantity of energy, and with an extensive investigation of different methods of desalination, frameworks have experimented in the most recent couple of decades. The different types of desalination techniques using solar energy with exergy analysis are studied and presented in this review paper. The exergy performance cost affecting factors and the economic feasibility of several desalination plants such as solar stills, humidification and dehumidification, multi-effect distillation, reverse osmosis, and multi-stage flash desalination techniques are studied and reported in this paper. The present study revealed that the desalination of water using solar energy as an efficient as well as a cost-effective method as compared desalination of water with other energy sources.

Abstract:Desalination is the process of making the saltwater of the Earth's oceans drinkable and could be a solution to droughts, especially in warmer and drier regions. However, the concerns of high cost and ecosystem degradation have always restricted the growth of the desalination industry and necessitated further studies and corrective actions. As desalination is becoming essential for our planet, the development of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies to produce clean water is a key research topic. Considering the worth of seawater desalination to fulfill the needs of the Earth habitants, this article explores how this process can be made less problematic to use as a real solution, not just a temporary opportunity. Desalination methods will play a key role, so all the major options and their environmental footprints are discussed, considering the energy requirements in particular of each process. A brief but up-to-date summary of the current status and future trends of desalination technologies is provided. Available equipment and procedures that are being developed to make desalination a sustainable process are explored. Finally, based on a detailed review, we highlight the future trends and issues to make informed decisions pertaining to the future research and development projects of this sector.
