Abstract:Even minute quantities of electric charge accumulating on polymer surfaces can cause shocks, explosions, and multibillion-dollar losses to electronic circuitry. This paper demonstrates that to remove static electricity, it is not at all necessary to "target" the charges themselves. Instead, the way to discharge a polymer is to remove radicals from its surface. These radicals colocalize with and stabilize the charges; when they are scavenged, the surfaces discharge rapidly. This radical-charge interplay allows for controlling static electricity by doping common polymers with small amounts of radical-scavenging molecules, including the familiar vitamin E. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by rendering common polymers dust-mitigating and also by using them as coatings that prevent the failure of electronic circuitry.
Charge redistribution and polarization energy of organic molecular crystals

Abstract:We present an approach to electronic polarization in molecular solids treated as a set of quantum systems interacting classically. Individual molecules are dealt with rigorously as quantum-mechanical systems subject to classical external fields created by all other molecules and, possibly, external sources. Self-consistent equations are derived for induced dipoles and for atomic charges whose redistribution in external fields is given explicitly by an atom-atom polarizability tensor. Electronic polarization is studied in two representative organic molecular crystals, anthracene and perylenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, and contrasted to previous results for systems of polarizable points. The stabilization energies of the neutral lattice, of isolated anions and cations, and of cation-anion pairs are found. Charge redistribution on ions is included. The dielectric tensors of crystals are successfully related to gas-phase properties and provide consistency checks on polarization energies. The procedure is generally applicable to organic crystals in the limit of no intermolecular overlap.

Abstract:Conducting polymers based on open-shell radical moieties exhibit potentially advantageous processing, stability, and optical attributes compared with conventional doped conjugated polymers. Despite their ascendance, reported radical conductors have been based almost exclusively on (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO), which raises fundamental questions regarding the ultimate limits of charge transport in these materials and whether some of the deficiencies exhibited by contemporary materials are due to the choice of radical chemistry. To address these questions, we have performed a density functional theory (DFT) study of the charge transfer characteristics of a broad range of open-shell chemistries relevant to radical conductors, including p-type, n-type, and ambipolar open-shell chemistries. We observe that far from being representative, TEMPO exhibits anomalously high reorganization energies due to strong charge localization. This, in turn, limits charge transfer in TEMPO compared with more delocalized open-shell species. By comprehensively mapping the dependence of charge transfer on radical-radical orientation, we have also identified a large mismatch between the conformations that are favored by intermolecular interactions and the conformations that maximize charge transfer in all of the open-shell chemistries investigated. These results suggest that significant opportunities exist to exploit directing interactions to promote charge transport in radical polymers.
Design of Persistent and Stable Porous Radical Polymers by Electronic Isolation Strategy.

Abstract:AbstractConjugated organic radical polymers with stable radical features are difficult to design because the π conjugation in the polymer backbones makes the radicals readily delocalize and tend to undergo covalent bonding processes. In this work, we report an electronic isolation strategy to design stable porous radical polymers by homocoupling reaction from a meta‐position active monomer. The meta linkage ensures less conjugation in the polymer skeletons, localizes the resonant radicals, and prevents them from recombination. The resulting porous radical polymer exhibits exceptional radical characters with ultralow band gap of 0.68 eV, strong yet extended UV/Vis‐NIR absorption up to 1800 nm, and high spin density. The above features make the polymer very promising in the photothermal conversion with record‐high photothermal temperature increment of ≈∼240 °C and striking solar‐driven water evaporation efficiency of 96.8 %. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of electronic isolation of radicals for producing outstanding photothermal materials.

Abstract:Stable organic radicals have long been desired for applications in quantum information science and optoelectronic semiconductor. Weakening the reactivity of unpaired electrons is an efficient strategy for fabrication stable radicals. The dual aryl/alkyl-substituted dihydrophenazine (DArPZ/DAlPz) derivatives have attracted a lot of attention due to their potential radical stability characteristics. In this work, three stable DArPZ-based radical cation compounds are obtained through tuning peripheral substituted groups with different electron donating/withdrawing effect to discuss their reactive activity changes in different solvent and aggregate state. Employing systematic experiments from crystallography, spectroscopy and theoretical calculation analyses, some referenceable molecular structure design strategy and the analytical model of evaluating radical behavior are formed and summarized. In addition, radical cations have good masking ability without continuous electrical circulating, implying their application in light-shading electrochromic devices. This work is referable on the design of stable radicals, the establishment of dynamic evaluation strategies and theoretical analysis models for their reactivity.
Tuning the stability of organic radicals: from covalent approaches to non-covalent approaches

Abstract:Organic radicals are important species with single electrons. Because of their open-shell structure, they are widely used in functional materials, such as spin probes, magnetic materials and optoelectronic materials. Owing to the high reactivity of single electrons, they often serve as a key intermediate in organic synthesis. Therefore, tuning the stability of radicals is crucial for their functions. Herein, we summarize covalent and non-covalent approaches to tune the stability of organic radicals through steric effects and tuning the delocalization of spin density. Covalent approaches can tune the stability of radicals effectively and non-covalent approaches benefit from dynamicity and reversibility. It is anticipated that the further development of covalent and non-covalent approaches, as well as the interplay between them, may push the fields forward by enriching new radical materials and radical mediated reactions.

Abstract:Stable colloidal dispersions with evenly distributed particles are important for many technological applications. Due to Brownian motion colloidal particles have constant collisions with each other which often lead to their aggregation driven by the long range van der Waals attraction. As a result the colloidal systems often tend to precipitate. A number of methods have been devised to minimize the effect of long-range van der Waals attraction between colloidal particles or to override the influence of the attraction in order to provide the colloidal stability.In the PhD thesis we investigated the colloidal stabilization in solutions of free polymers which is commonly referred to as depletion stabilization. Previous theoretical studies of free-polymer induced (FPI) stabilization were based on oversimplified models involving uncontrolled approximations. Even the most basic features of the depletion stabilization phenomenon were unknown. It was unclear how the PI repulsion depends on the solution parameters, polymer structure and monomer/surface interactions.The free polymer chains were modeled as random walks in a self-consistent molecular field that satisfied to diffusion-like integro-differential equation. As the molecular field we used the chemical potential that for semi-dilute polymer solution can be represented as a virial expansion where we took into account only second and third virial coefficients of the polymer solution. Varying the parameters like polymer stiffness, polymer length, polymer concentration and solvent regime (like theta solvent) whether it is for purely repulsive colloidal surface, adsorbed surface or surface with grafted polymer layer we were able to enhance the repulsive barrier due to the free polymers between the particles and therefore found conditions for kinetic stabilization of the system.

Abstract:Charge transfer in nonconjugated redox-active polymers is influenced by redox site proximity and polymer flexibility, but it is challenging to observe these effects independently. In this work, spatially defined radical-containing polymers are synthesized by using acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-dienes bearing a central activated ester. Postpolymerization functionalization with 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (4-amino-TEMPO) introduces TEMPO radical groups onto the polymer backbone through amide linkages to yield spatially defined polymers with radical units every 9, 11, 15, and 21 carbons. Increased radical spacing leads to reduced spin–spin coupling and increased chain flexibility. The glass transition temperatures (T g) range from 47.6 to −13.8 °C, depending on the radical spacing. The spatially defined TEMPO-substituted polymer with a spacing length of 15 carbons displays the lowest T g and the shortest hopping distance, as shown through molecular dynamics simulations. Also, this polymer displays kinetics 1000 times faster than the commonly studied TEMPO-containing polymer poly(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy-4-ylacrylamide) (PTAm). Remarkably, comparison of the diffusion and kinetics attributed to the redox reaction reveals that both the apparent diffusion coefficient and the self-exchange reaction rate constant are correlated to the polymer’s T g as log[D app] and log[k ex,app] ∼ T g, respectively. Critically, these data demonstrate that controlling the spacing of redox-active groups along a polymer backbone strongly influences backbone flexibility and radical packing, which leads to synergetic improvements in the charge transfer kinetics of nonconjugated redox-active polymers.

Abstract:The development of new high-tech applications based on organic radical polymers has driven significant and renewed focus on these open shell macromolecules. The versatility in synthetic methods makes them highly accessible materials for a variety of researchers from different backgrounds. Although numerous overviews of the synthesis, structure and properties are available, the determination of radical concentration has been largely overlooked. This primer outlines the methods available and the non-trivial nature of the characterisation process. Although quantitative electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetometry are the gold standard for direct measurement of paramagnetism, there also exists a wide range of highly accessible complimentary methods for indirect measure such as ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy.

Revealing the nature of covalently tethered distonic radical anions in the generation of heteroatom-centered radicals: evidence for the polarity-matching PCET pathway

Abstract:Recognition of the intermediacy and regulation of reactivity patterns of radical intermediates in radical chemistry have profound impacts on harnessing and developing the full potential of open-shell species in synthetic settings. In this work, the possibility of in situ formation of O/N-X intermediates from Brønsted base covalently tethered carbonyl hypohalites (BCTCs) for the generation of heteroatom-centered radicals has certainly been excluded by NMR experiments and density functional theory calculations. Instead, the spectroscopic analyses reveal that the BCTCs serve as precursors of tether-tunable distonic radical anions (TDRAs) which have been unequivocally substantiated to be involved in the direct cleavage of O/N-H bonds to generate the corresponding heteroatom-centered radicals. Meanwhile, a deep insight into the properties and reactivities of the resulting TDRAs indicates that the introduction of a tethered Brønsted base on the parent open-shell species reinforces their stabilities and leads to a reversal of electrophilicity. Moreover, the dual descriptor values and electrophilicity indices are calculated based on eleven reported radical reactions involving various electrophilic/nucleophilic radical species, further confirming their validity in the prediction of the polar effect and the polarity-matching consistency between nucleophilic TDRAs and protic O/N-H bonds. The additional halogen-free experiments mediated by the combination of phthaloyl peroxide and TEMPO also prove the feasibility of the TDRA-assisted philicity-regulation approach. Lastly, detailed intrinsic bond orbital (IBO) and Hirschfeld spin population analyses are employed to elucidate that the H-atom abstraction processes are the polarity-matching proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathways, with a degree of oxidative asynchronicity.

Abstract:The discovery of air-stable organic radicals has sparked interest in their applications in molecular electronics and spintronics. These radicals possess open-shell electronic structures, offering unique electrical characteristics and serving as a versatile platform for spintronics on account of their weak spin-orbit coupling and hyperfine interactions. Additionally, radicals exhibit distinctive properties valuable for constructing supramolecular devices through dimerization, molecular recognition, and mechanical interlocking. This review highlights the applications of air-stable organic radicals in electronics, inspiring molecular design by emphasizing their remarkable electric and magnetic capabilities. It also provides an overview of advances in research related to production methods and properties reliant on supramolecular radicals, broadening the scope of single-molecule investigations. The involvement of radicals in single-molecule reactions is also discussed. Future developments in this field and additional uses for stable radicals are also anticipated. By illuminating the potential of these compounds, this Review contributes to the advancement of molecular electronics and spintronics research.

Highly Stable Organic Bisradicals Protected by Mechanical Bonds.

Abstract:Two new highly charged [2]catenanes-namely, mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) -were synthesized by exploiting radical host-guest templation between derivatives containing BIPY center dot+ radical cations and the meta analogue of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene). In contrast to related [2]catenanes that have been isolated as air-stable monoradicals, both mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) exist as air-stable singlet bisradicals, as evidenced by both X-ray crystallography in the solid state and EPR spectroscopy in solution. Electrochemical studies indicate that the first two reduction peaks of these two [2]catenanes are shifted significantly to more positive potentials, a feature which is responsible for their extraordinary stability in air. The mixed-valence nature of the mono- and bisradical states endows them with unique NIR absorption properties, e.g., NIR absorption bands for the mono- and bisradical states observed at similar to 1800 and similar to 1450 nm, respectively. These [2]catenanes are potentially useful in applications that include NIR photothermal conversion, UV-vis-NIR multiple-state electrochromic materials, and multiple-state memory devices. Our findings highlight the principle of "mechanical-bond-induced stabilization" as an efficient strategy for designing persistent organic radicals.
Lewis Acid‐Mediated Radical Stabilization and Dynamic Covalent Bonding: Tunable, Reversible and Photocontrollable

Abstract:This work describes a strategy not only to isolate a dynamically stable radical with physical property tunability, but to efficiently regulate the radical dissociation with reversibility and photo controllability. The addition of Lewis acid B(C6 F5 )3 (BCF) into the solution of a radical σ-dimer (1-1) led to a stable radical (1⋅-2B), which has been characterized by EPR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction, in conjunction with theoretical calculation. The radical species is stabilized mainly by captodative effect, single electron transfer and steric effect. The absorption maximum of the radical can be tuned by using different Lewis acids. Dimer 1-1 can be achieved back by addition of a stronger base into the solution of 1⋅-2B, exhibiting a reversible process. By introducing a photo BCF generator, the dissociation of the dimer and the formation of the radical adduct become photocontrollable.

Abstract:The process of thermal-oxidative degradation of polymer materials has been studied on the example of polyethylene in the presence of quinones and / or nitroxyl radicals. The synergistic effect of the positive action of a mixture of stabilisers from a number of quinones and nitroxyl radicals on the destructive process of polyethylene has been established. It has been shown that the rate of degradation has significantly slowed down when an equimolecular mixture of 4-acetylamino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylhexahydropyridine-1-oxyl and 2,6-di-tert-amyl-1,4-cyclohexadienone inhibitors has been introduced into the polymer. The kinetics of the initiated thermo-destructive process of polyethylene oxidation in the presence and absence of stabilisers has been studied. A mechanism of joint action of stabilisers based on their interaction with radicals and the breakage of radical chains, as well as a mechanism for the regeneration of stabilisers, has been proposed.

Abstract:A homologous series of [2]rotaxanes, in which cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) serves as the ring component, while the dumbbell components all contain single 4,4'-bipyridinium (BIPY2+) units centrally located in the midst of oligomethylene chains of varying lengths, have been synthesized by taking advantage of radical templation and copper-free azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions in the formation of their stoppers. Cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry reveal that the BIPY center dot+ radical cations in this series of [2]rotaxanes are stabilized against oxidation, both electrochemically and by atmospheric oxygen. The enforced proximity between the BIPY2+ units in the ring and dumbbell components gives rise to enhanced Coulombic repulsion, destabilizing the ground-state co-conformations of the fully oxidized forms of these [2]rotaxanes. The smallest [2]rotaxane, with only three methylene groups on each side of its dumbbell component, is found to exist under ambient conditions in a monoradical state, a situation which does not persist in acetonitrile solution, at least in the case of its longer analogues. H-1 NMR spectroscopy reveals that the activation energy barriers to the shuttling of the CBPQT(4+) rings over the BIPY2+ units in the dumbbells increase linearly with increasing oligomethylene chain lengths across the series of [2] rotaxanes. These findings provide a new way of producing highly stabilized BIPY center dot+ radical cations and open up more opportunities to use stable organic radicals as building blocks for the construction of paramagnetic materials and conductive molecular electronic devices.

Abstract:In the last few years, air-stable organic radicals and radical polymers have attracted tremendous attention due to their outstanding performance in flexible electronic devices, including transistors, batteries, light-emitting diodes, thermoelectric and photothermal conversion devices, and among many others. The main issue of radicals from laboratory studies to real-world applications is that the number of known air-stable radicals is very limited, and the radicals that have been used as materials are even less. Here, the known and newly developed air-stable organic radicals are summarized, generalizing the way of observing air-stable radicals. The special electric and photophysical properties of organic radicals and radical polymers are interpreted, which give radicals a wide scope for various of potential applications. Finally, the exciting applications of radicals that have been achieved in flexible electronic devices are summarized. The aim herein is to highlight the recent achievements in radicals in chemistry, materials science, and flexible electronics, and further bridge the gap between these three disciplines.
Binding Energies and Interaction Origins Between Nonclassical Single-Electron Hydrogen, Sodium and Lithium Bonds and Neutral Boron-Containing Radicals: a Theoretical Investigation

Abstract:Nonclassical single electron hydrogen, sodium and lithium bonds (SEHBs, SENaBs and SELiBs) between single electron acceptors X–A (A=H, Na, Li; X=CN, HCC, HO, NC, CF3) and neutral radicals BY2 (Y=H, OH, CH3) and have been systematically investigated by high level theoretical methods, such as second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), spin-component-scaled Møller-Plesset theory (SCS-MP2), the coupled cluster method with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)), and the correlation consistent composite approach (ccCA). Binding energies have been corrected for zero-point vibrational effects and (when applicable) basis set superposition error. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were also employed to qualitatively characterize the single electron bond interactions. The stabilization energy was partitioned via the localized molecular orbital energy decomposition analysis (LMO-EDA) method, and both electrostatic and exchange interactions were seen to be major driving forces for the complex stabilization. Interestingly, the sum of the energy contributors of exchange (E EX), repulsion (E REP), polarization (E POL), dispersion (E DIS) is close to zero and the changes in the interaction energy follow the trend of the electrostatic energy (E ES). We observe several linear relationships among the optimized intermolecular parameters and the interaction energies of the various complexes.
Sudden polarization and zwitterion formation as a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect: a new insight into the photochemistry of alkenes.

Abstract:We show that the intermediates of photochemical reactions-sudden polarization and zwitterion formations-are consequences of the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE), which facilitates a better understanding, rationalization, prediction, and manipulation of the corresponding chemical and biological processes. This statement is illustrated on a series of alkenes, including ethylene, butadiene, diallyls, stilbene, and ring-halogenated stilbenes, but the formulated methodology and results are applicable to any photochemical reaction controlled by sudden polarization (and can be extended to other chemical reactions with short-lived intermediates). All these molecules have many polar modes, significantly complicating the PJTE multimode problem. We resolved this by introducing the zwitterion mode, which reproduces the integrated effect of all the polar modes and their relative activities by involving ab initio calculated energy and dipole moment profiles, thereby revealing the contribution of the separate parts of the molecular structure to the process of sudden polarization and reactivity. Among the other details, the PJTE analysis shows, for instance, why only ring-fluorinated stilbene exhibits the sudden polarization effect, whereas Cl-stilbene, Br-stilbene, I-stilbene, and planar stilbene exhibit no significant photo-polarization. The possible manipulations of the process are also mentioned. With the example of glycine, we also show that charge separation and zwitterion formation via the PJTE may take place not only as a result of photoexcitation, but also under other external perturbations, e.g., interaction with a polarizable environment. The importance of the PJTE treatment of the problem is also in its direct application to unstable intermediates of chemical reactions, where electronic structure calculations do not converge in the geometry optimization part.
Spin Polarization Transfer from a Photogenerated Radical Ion Pair to a Stable Radical Controlled by Charge Recombination

Abstract:Photoexcitation of electron donor-acceptor molecules frequently produces radical ion pairs with well-defined initial spin-polarized states that have attracted significant interest for spintronics. Transfer of this initial spin polarization to a stable radical is predicted to depend on the rates of the radical ion pair recombination reactions, but this prediction has not been tested experimentally. In this study, a stable radical/electron donor/chromophore/electron acceptor molecule, BDPA•-mPD-ANI-NDI, where BDPA• is α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl, mPD is m-phenylenediamine, ANI is 4-aminonaphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide, and NDI is naphthalene-1,4:5,8-bis(dicarboximide), was synthesized. Photoexcitation of ANI produces the triradical BDPA•-mPD+•-ANI-NDI-• in which the mPD+•-ANI-NDI-• radical ion pair is spin coupled to the BDPA• stable radical. BDPA•-mPD+•-ANI-NDI-• and its counterpart lacking the stable radical are found to exhibit spin-selective charge recombination in which the triplet radical ion pair 3(mPD+•-ANI-NDI-•) is in equilibrium with the 3*NDI charge recombination product. Time-resolved EPR measurements show that this process is associated with an inversion of the sign of the polarization transferred to BDPA• over time. The polarization transfer rates are found to be strongly solvent dependent, as shifts in this equilibrium affect the spin dynamics. These results demonstrate that even small changes in electron transfer dynamics can have a large effect on the spin dynamics of photogenerated multispin systems.
