Jumping Liquid Metal Droplet in Electrolyte Triggered by Solid Metal Particles

Abstract:We report the electron discharge effect due to point contact between liquid metal and solid metal particles in electrolyte. Adding nickel particles induces drastic hydrogen generating and intermittent jumping of a sub-millimeter EGaIn droplet in NaOH solution. Observations from different orientations disclose that such jumping behavior is triggered by pressurized bubbles under the assistance of interfacial interactions. Hydrogen evolution around particles provides clear evidence that such electric instability originates from the varied electric potential and morphology between the two metallic materials. The point-contact-induced charge concentration significantly enhances the near-surface electric field intensity at the particle tips and thus causes electric breakdown of the electrolyte.
Reduced Breakdown Voltage for In-Liquid Plasma Discharges Using Moveable Electrodes

Abstract:Minimizing the breakdown voltage and discharge current required to initiate direct in-liquid discharges, thus lowering power-source requirements and avoiding electrode ablation, is crucial for industrial applications of in-liquid plasmas. Here we demonstrate such considerable reductions by employing movable electrodes, without changing the electrode configuration or increasing the system complexity. The new mechanism is based on electrostatic electrode attraction resulting in a reduction in the discharge spacing by up to 6 times and facilitating a plasma initiation at lower breakdown voltages. The accumulated charges consumed by the discharge revert the electrodes to the initial positions, forming a gliding arc between the enlarged gaps and thus inhibiting current increases and electrode ablation.

Abstract:We reported an electro-hydrodynamic shooting phenomenon of liquid metal stream. A small voltage direct current electric field would induce ejection of liquid metal inside capillary tube and then shooting into sodium hydroxide solution to form discrete droplets. The shooting velocity has positive relationship with the applied voltage while the droplet size is dominated by the aperture diameter of the capillary nozzle. Further, the motion of the liquid metal droplets can be flexibly manipulated by the electrodes. This effect suggests an easy going way to generate metal droplets in large quantity, which is important from both fundamental and practical aspects.

Abstract:Plasma bubbles are regarded as a promising means of interacting plasma discharges and liquids due to their high efficiency in the generation of reactive species. The discharge mode and characteristics are significant factors that should be considered. In this study, the plasmas are initially generated in the gas phase and then driven by the gas flow to diffuse into the solution through the two holes at the lower part of the quartz tube to form plasma bubbles. The discharge modes, characteristics, and plasma–liquid interactions in two different configurations, i.e., bare electrode and dielectric-coated electrode, are investigated. It is found that the discharge mode induced for the two structures is different, with a hybrid-mode operating in the bare electrode design and a filamentary mode operating in the dielectric design. When the applied voltage is increased, a filamentary-to-spark transition occurs in the bare structure, while the discharge remains relatively stable in the dielectric design. Direct and intense contact between the discharge and the solution in the bare structure greatly promotes the physio-chemical reactions and results in obvious changes in H 2 O 2 concentration, solution p H, conductivity, and temperature. This study provides insights into hybrid gas–liquid discharges and reactor design for plasma bubble generation.

Abstract:In this paper, the discharge ignited in a capillary connecting two beakers filled with electrolyte solution is investigated. During the experiment, an external electrical voltage is applied through two platinum electrodes dipped in the beakers. A gas bubble forms inside the capillary when the applied voltage is higher than 1000 V Since the beakers are tilted slightly, after generation, the bubble moves slowly to the uphill outlet of the capillary due to buoyancy. When the bubble reaches the end of the capillary, it cracks and a bright discharge is ignited. The emission spectra of the discharge plasma are related to the metal ions dissolved in the solution and thus can be used for metal ion detection. Electrical Explosion Across Gas–liquid Interface: Aerosol Breakdown, Shock Waves, and Cavity Dynamics

Abstract:The electrical explosion of a conductor driven by a pulsed current can be used to simulate the effects of explosions in the laboratory, including the resulting shock waves and bubble dynamics. A fine metallic wire can also be used to initiate pulsed discharge in different media. This study shows images of an exploding wire across an air–water interface for the first time in the literature. The transient process was analyzed using high-speed backlit photography as well as waveforms of the spectrum and discharge. Streamer-like discharge developed from a triple-junction point within the current pause to induce a restrike in metallic aerosol, verifying that gas discharge was prevalent in the system. An upward dense plasma jet accompanied by a crown-like water spike was then observed and led to violent plasma–water interactions (mushroom cloud-like cluster) that were examined through a hydrodynamic simulation. The Stark broadening of the Hα line at 656.28 nm suggested that the electron density of the reaction zone could be 1018 cm−3 or higher. The resolved spatial–temporal images revealed that the plasma evolution process (in μs) was much faster than hydrodynamic processes, including damage to the interface and perturbations of the bubbles (in ms). Water, thus, remained in a “rigid” state during the pulsed discharge, and the explosion of the wire in it was not an adiabatic process at a timescale of 102 μs. Recombination and heat loss through the electrode governed the evolution of the post-discharge plasma, and the microscopic images revealed nano-lamellate nucleation on the surface of the electrode.

Abstract:An experimental study is presented of a cold atmospheric Ar plasma jet with distinct advantages of low-working voltage and high plasma stability. To effectively improve the performance of the jet, a pair of pin electrodes with one floating in the air is applied. Variation in the applied voltage and/or the Ar gas flow causes the transition of the jet plasma from ignition, through stable plume to an unstable stage. The characteristics of the jet discharge are also studied by means of the electrical and spectroscopic diagnosis.
The Influence of Liquid Conductivity on Pulsed Discharge Generated by a Vertical Falling Liquid Electrode Device

Abstract:A novel atmospheric gas-liquid discharge device has been designed in this study to generate discharge directly around the vertical falling liquid column. The device is made up of a quartz tube, an H.V. electrode attached to the outer wall of the quartz tube, and a vertical falling liquid column acting as the liquid ground electrode in the quartz tube`s internal center. An ICCD camera and a 2D axisymmetric numerical modeling are used to analyze the temporal-spatial evolution of the pulsed discharge around the liquid electrode. The results of the experiment and simulation indicate that the propagation and sustaining time of the discharge are strongly dependent on applied voltage and liquid electrode conductivity. It is found that there is no discharge observed around the liquid electrode with a conductivity of 0.05 mS cm(-1). As the conductivity of the liquid electrode increases, the electric field applied in the gas phase increases. When the conductivity is greater than 0.05 mS cm(-1), the discharge is initiated around the intermediate region of the liquid electrode, then develops upwards and downwards along the liquid electrode. The discharge sustaining time increases with the increase of the conductivity and applied voltage. When the liquid electrode is replaced by the stainless-steel electrode, it is discovered that the discharge sustaining time of the stainless-steel electrode is lower than that of the liquid electrode at the same applied voltage. Analysis suggests that the prolonged discharge sustaining time is caused by the gas capacitance that is increased by water vapor released from the liquid electrode. The simulation results indicate that the discharge around the liquid electrode is constrained to the cone-shaped distribution by the non-uniform electric field around the liquid electrode when the conductivity increases to 200 mS cm(-1) .

Abstract:We present a plasma reactor able to generate DC discharge plasma inside an aqueous solution. The key point is that one wire electrode for the plasma generation is inside a capillary quartz tube, leaving a small gap between the electrode tip and the end of the capillary quartz tube. When the capillary quartz tube is immersed in an aqueous solution, a small gas gap is provided between the electrode tip and the solution. Discharge plasma can be generated at the gas gap, as applied DC voltage is beyond the gas breakdown voltage. As two examples among many possible applications, hydrogen peroxide and nitrate are synthesized from the plasma reactor with a flowing aqueous solutions of Na 2 SO 4 .

Abstract:The high density of admixture neutral particles beyond air is crucial for regulating the density and species of active products in plasmas. However, high density always leads to breakdown streamers. We engineered a glow discharge plasma source driven by a flash evaporation-induced density gradient from a porous anode or cathode with NaCl solution in a vacuum. The controlled groups with the metal anode and cathode were also conducted. The discharges with the liquid electrodes and controlled groups were carefully analyzed using optical spectrum and imaging methods. For both the discharges with the liquid anode and cathode, the spatial–temporal morphology measurements using intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) and discharge current monitoring revealed the generation of glow discharge. As the gas density increases from the low-density region near the pumping outlet to the high-density region near the liquid electrode, the light intensity and avalanche diameter decrease smoothly without sharp saltation, presenting a density dependence and independence from the liquid electrode polarity. Furthermore, the spectra of discharges at various axial positions are dominated by the hydrogen Balmer series, OH(A–X) and O I (777.4 nm), resulting from collision reactions of evaporated water molecules. The rotational temperature of OH(A–X) ranges from 573 to 1135 K, lower than the rotational temperature of N $_{2}$ (C–B) in discharges without liquid. This result reveals the heat dissipation effect of the liquid electrode. The electron excitation temperature indicates the creation of nonthermal equilibrium plasmas with an electron density ranging from 0.15 $\times$ 10 $^{14}$ to 2.83 $\times$ 10 $^{14}$ cm $^{-3}$ .

Falling Liquid Droplets Discharge

Abstract:This paper reports the phenomenon of two plasma segments forming when a water droplet descends, one between the upper part of the droplet and the outlet tube and the other between the lower part of the droplet and the water surface in the container. The study reveals that as the water droplet descends, the length of the upper plasma gradually increases, while the length of the lower plasma decreases until the lower plasma disappears upon contact between the water droplet and the water in the container. At this point, the discharge voltage decreases from 6.5 kV to 5.9 kV, and the discharge current increases from 17 mA to 20 mA. Further investigation reveals that this decrease in voltage drop is equal to the value of the voltage of cathode fall. Additionally, the study finds that the rotational temperature of this plasma reaches 2100 K, with an electron density of 1014/cm3. Furthermore, it is intriguing to note that the descent speed of the droplet is significantly greater than that of a freely falling droplet. Further research indicates that this is due to an instant water channel explosion-induced downward impact on the droplet caused by plasma generation at the upper part of the droplet. The advantage of this device lies in the fact that the plasma only comes into direct contact with water, without any contact with metal electrodes, thus eliminating the issue of electrode corrosion. Furthermore, since the water is in dynamic flow, it facilitates the dissolution of reactive gaseous components into the water, making it suitable for applications related to plasma-activated water and similar purposes.

Abstract:The generation and maintenance of non-thermal air plasmas at atmospheric pressure with low power requirements remain formidable challenges. Here, we report on a promising method allowing the production of an air plasma between a planar disc-shaped metal electrode and a second electrode made of a static volume of water contained in a shallow glass dish. Currently, we have used only tap water as one of the electrodes. However, other liquids with low conductivity could also be used. In this paper, the power requirements, gas temperature measurements, and atomic and molecular emission bands of the discharge will be presented. Potential applications of this atmospheric pressure discharge include decontamination, radiation sources, etc.
Discharge in Electrospraying of Highly Conductive Aqueous Solution Coated with Outer Ionic Liquid

Abstract:Discharge in electrospraying can be applied in water decontamination, dental sterilization, and spectrometry of biological samples. The discharge in electrospraying of a single liquid like the aqueous solution or the ionic liquid has been investigated, which presents different discharge characteristics such as patterns, currents and frequencies. This paper puts forward a way to actively control the discharge characteristics of liquids electrospray beyond the limitation of their own physical properties, which was accomplished by utilizing the technique of coaxial electrospray to coat the concentrated sodium chloride (NaCl) aqueous solution with a layer of ionic liquid. Previously we used this method to suppress the discharge of NaCl solution and stably electrosprayed the NaCl solution. The discharge characteristics of coaxial electrospray and the effect of the applied voltage and the flow rates of both liquids on the discharge was investigated in detail. When being electrosprayed, the NaCl solution alone discharged with pre-onset mode, pulseless corona discharge mode and streamer discharge mode, while the ionic liquid and the coaxial electrospray only discharged with the streamer discharge mode with a conical liquid shape, and less droplets were formed during the transient cone-jet emission. After being coated with the outer ionic liquid, the current, frequency and onset voltage of the discharge of the inner aqueous solution all increased. The current and frequency of the discharge of the coaxial electrospray all increased as the applied voltage increased. In addition, a numerical simulation has been conducted, which confirmed that the inner aqueous solution was strongly shielded from the external electric field by the outer ionic liquid layer. Therefore, it is plausible to actively control the discharge characteristics of the liquids through adjusting the flow rates of both liquids, the applied voltage and choosing the suitable outer liquid.

Abstract:We report a phenomenon that when exerting an electric field gradient across a liquid metal/electrolyte interface, a droplet of the same liquid metal can persistently surf on the interface without coalescence. A thin layer of the intermediate solution, which separates the droplet from direct metallic contacting and provides levitating force, is responsible for such surfing effect. The electric resistance of this solution film is measured, and the film thickness is further theoretically calculated. The fact that the levitating state can be switched on and off via a controlled manner paves the way for reliably manipulating liquid metal droplets or devices.

Abstract:We have discovered that room temperature liquid metal is capable of penetrating through macro- and microporous materials by applying a voltage. In this work, we demonstrate the liquid metal penetration effect in various porous materials such as tissue paper, thick and fine sponges, fabrics, and meshes. The penetration effect mimics one of the three well-known superfluid properties of liquid helium superfluid that only occur at near-zero Kelvin. The underlying mechanism is that the high surface tension of liquid metal can be significantly reduced to near-zero due to the voltage induced oxidation of the liquid metal surface in a solution. It is the extremely low surface tension and gravity that cause the liquid metal to superwet the solid surface, leading to the penetration phenomena. Our findings offer new opportunities for novel microfluidic applications and could promote further discovery of more exotic fluid states of liquid metals.

Nanoparticles Enabled Liquid Metal Motions

Abstract:Jumping is a special, however, hard to achieve capability by a liquid metal machine. But under certain assistance, such behavior can also be partially realized. In a recently found electron discharge effect due to point contact between liquid metal and solid metal particles in electrolyte (Tang et al in Appl Phys Lett 108: 223901-223905, 2016 [1]), it was disclosed that adding nickel particles induces drastic hydrogen generation and intermittent jumping of sub-millimeter EGaIn droplet in NaOH solution. Observations from different orientations indicated that such jumping is triggered by pressurized bubble under assistance of interfacial interactions. Hydrogen evolution around particle provides clear evidence that such electric instability is originated from the varied electric potential and morphology between the two metallic materials. The point-contact-induced charge significantly enhances the near-surface electric field intensity at the particle tips and thus causes electric breakdown of the electrolyte. Further, with a particle raft, electrohydrodynamic liquid metal surface convection can even be triggered. Such phenomenon would be very useful to trace the flow of the liquid metal which is hard to do otherwise. This chapter is dedicated to present a basic understanding on the fundamental route to realize particles stimulated liquid metal motions which can help develop potential machine thus involved.
Effect of liquid surface depression size on discharge characteristics and chemical distribution in the plasma-liquid anode system

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric pressure plasma-liquid interactions exist in a variety of applications, including wastewater treatment, wound sterilization, and disinfection. In practice, the phenomenon of liquid surface depression will inevitably appear. The applied gas will cause a depression on the liquid surface, which will undoubtedly affect the plasma generation and further affect the application performance. However, the effect of liquid surface deformation on the plasma is still unclear. In this study, numerical models are developed to reveal the mechanism of liquid surface depressions affecting plasma discharge characteristics and the consequential distribution of plasma species, and further study the influence of liquid surface depressions of different sizes generated by different helium flow rates on the plasma. Results show that the liquid surface deformation changes the initial spatial electric field, resulting in the rearrangement of electrons on the liquid surface. The charges deposited on the liquid surface further increase the degree of distortion of the electric field. Moreover, the electric field and electron distribution affected by the liquid surface depression significantly influence the generation and distribution of active species, which determines the practical effectiveness of the relevant applications. This work explores the phenomenon of liquid surface depression, which has been neglected in previous related work, and contributes to further understanding of plasma-liquid interactions, providing better theoretical guidance for related applications and technologies.

Electrically Induced Photonic and Acoustic Quantum Effect From Liquid Metal Droplets in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:So far, several macroscopic quantum phenomena have been discovered in the Josephson junction. Through introducing such a structure with a liquid membrane sandwiched between two liquid metal electrodes, we had ever observed a lighting and sound phenomenon which was explained before as discharge plasma. In fact, such an effect also belongs to a quantum process. It is based on this conceiving, we proposed here that an electrically controllable method can thus be established to generate and manipulate as much photonic quantum as desired. We attributed such electrically induced lighting among liquid metal droplets immersed inside aqueous solution as photonic quantum effect. Our experiments clarified that a small electrical voltage would be strong enough to trigger blue-violet light and sound inside the aqueous solution system. Meanwhile, thermal heat is released, and chemical reaction occurs over the solution. From an alternative way which differs from former effort in interpreting such effect as discharge plasma, we treated this process as a quantum one and derived new conceptual equations to theoretically quantify this phenomenon in light of quantum mechanics principle. It can be anticipated that given specific designing, such spontaneously generated tremendous quantum can be manipulated to entangle together which would possibly help mold functional elements for developing future quantum computing or communication system. With superior adaptability than that of the conventional rigid junction, the present electro-photonic quantum generation system made of liquid metal droplets structure could work in solution, room temperature situation and is easy to be adjusted. It suggests a macroscopic way to innovate the classical strategies and technologies in generating quantum as frequently adopted in classical quantum engineering area.

Abstract:Dynamic shock waves induced by high-pulsed current discharge in liquid have wide potential applications in industrial and civil fields, such as rock fragmentation, electrohydraulic cleaning, and oil stimulation. Normally, the interelectrode gap distance is small due to the high electrical breakdown field of the liquid. Most of the electrical energy is consumed by the external circuit due to the low impedance of the plasma channel, and the energy transfer efficiency from the electrical energy to the mechanical energy is very low. In this paper, the optimal interelectrode distance and the effect of the plasma channel length on the intensity of the shock wave are investigated. The voltage across the liquid gap, main discharge current through the gap and the pressure wave, as well as the time-resolved images of the plasma channel development and the bubble formation are observed and presented. Results show that the optimal interelectrode distance can generate the strongest intensity of the shock waves. The plasma channel length can be extended by the plasma channel length regulation (PCLR) method, and the deposited energy into the plasma channel is increased. Besides, the energy transfer efficiency can be improved effectively by the PCLR method, and the requirement of the capacitor and switch can be reduced to obtain the same shock wave intensities. Based on the PCLR method, the induced shock wave was applied to increase the permeability of the specimen. It shows that the energy transfer efficiency can be improved effectively based on the presented method, and the shock wave can increase the permeability effectively.
