Challenging the Concept of Smartphone Addiction: An Empirical Pilot Study of Smartphone Usage Patterns and Psychological Well-Being

Abstract:Smartphone use is ubiquitous, however, scholarly debate regarding the addictive nature of smartphones abounds. In this context, it is integral to distinguish between the content that users experience and the medium that facilitates access to the former, as users may experience addictive-like responses to the specific activities they engage in through the context experienced rather than the device that facilitates access to these activities. The present study aimed to explore conceptualizations of smartphone addiction by (a) investigating user preferences for specific smartphone functionalities, (b) examining behavioral changes associated with limited access to preferred functionalities, and (c) exploring links between aspects of smartphone use and self-reported psychological well-being. A total of 471 participants completed an online survey, providing data on sociodemographics, actual and hypothetical smartphone usage, and psychological well-being (depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms). The results showed that communication functionalities were most frequently cited as being preferred among smartphone users. Notably, participants reported that they would check their smartphones significantly fewer times if their top-three functionalities were inaccessible. This suggests that smartphone users are likely to become addicted to the functionalities they access on their smartphones (content) and not the smartphones themselves (medium), rendering unviable the notion of smartphone addiction as a construct. Further analyses suggested negligible to small correlations between aspects of smartphone use and psychological well-being variables. The findings imply that rather than focusing on frequency of smartphone use, it is recommended that future research examines the type and quality of specific smartphone usages and their effects on user well-being.
Problematic Smartphone Use Leads to Behavioral and Cognitive Self-Control Deficits

Abstract:Excessive use of smartphones has been associated with a number of negative consequences for individuals. Some of these consequences relate to many symptoms of behavioral addiction. The present study aims to investigate whether participants with high levels of smartphone usage may have difficulty with their ability to wield the self-control that is needed to restrict smartphone usage compared to participants with lower levels of smartphone addiction. Specifically, we expect that people with high levels of smartphone usage may have problems in refraining from using a smartphone. In addition, we expect people with a high level of smartphone use may show deficiencies in cognitive tasks such as memory, executive control, and visual and auditory attention. An ABA design was applied to analyze the effects of smartphone withdrawal. The first A refers to baseline measurements: Visual RT, Auditory RT, Go/No-Go RT and N-Back RT and Eriksen flanker RT. The B refers to 3 days of smartphone withdrawal, whereas the second A refers to the same measurements used in the baseline. In addition, several standardized scales were administered, among them: Smartphone addiction scale-short version (SAS-SV), Fear of missing out scale (FoMOs), Procrastination scale, and Psychological General Well-Being Index. One hundred and eleven participants took part in the study. Based on median split they were divided into two groups: high level and low level smartphone users. Moreover, thanks to an app installed on the participants' smartphones, it was possible to measure levels of compliance with the task. Results indicate that participants with low levels of smartphone usage show less difficulty in their ability to wield the self-control needed to withdraw smartphone use and faster reaction times on cognitive tests than participants with high levels of smartphone usage. Moreover, the profile of participants with high levels of smartphone usage shows higher scores on the FoMOs and Procrastination scale, and lower scores in the Psychological General Well-Being Index. The results are discussed in light of self-regulation theory.
Relationship of smartphone dependence with personal states and properties

Abstract:Numerous studies show that smartphone addiction has a detrimental effect on many important aspects of modern life. The purpose of this article is an analytical review of foreign studies on the relationship between smartphone addiction and psychological states and personality traits. The adverse effects of excessive use of smartphones for physical and mental health were found in the form of depression, anxiety, stress, negative emotions, insomnia, poor sleep quality, and low physical activity. Excessive smartphone use predicts low self-regulation and poor self-control. Excessive smartphone communication makes people less empathetic to each other, resulting in a loss of empathy and a deterioration in emotional connection with others. Smartphone addiction is positively associated with attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity disorder, compulsive behaviour, and procrastination. Smartphone addiction to social media is linked to interpersonal issues and contributes to non-assertive behaviour and exposure to cyberbullying. The most active smartphone users receive the highest scores for addictive behaviour. Of the personality traits of individuals, loneliness and shyness are the strongest predictors of smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction negatively affects communication skills. Unmarried people are more dependent on the smartphone. Women are more dependent on smartphones than men.
Prevalence and Correlates of Problematic Smartphone Use in a Large Random Sample of Chinese Undergraduates.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Smartphones are becoming a daily necessity for most undergraduates in Mainland China. Because the present scenario of problematic smartphone use (PSU) is largely unexplored, in the current study we aimed to estimate the prevalence of PSU and to screen suitable predictors for PSU among Chinese undergraduates in the framework of the stress-coping theory.METHODS:A sample of 1062 undergraduate smartphone users was recruited by means of the stratified cluster random sampling strategy between April and May 2015. The Problematic Cellular Phone Use Questionnaire was used to identify PSU. We evaluated five candidate risk factors for PSU by using logistic regression analysis while controlling for demographic characteristics and specific features of smartphone use.RESULTS:The prevalence of PSU among Chinese undergraduates was estimated to be 21.3%. The risk factors for PSU were majoring in the humanities, high monthly income from the family (≥1500 RMB), serious emotional symptoms, high perceived stress, and perfectionism-related factors (high doubts about actions, high parental expectations).CONCLUSIONS:PSU among undergraduates appears to be ubiquitous and thus constitutes a public health issue in Mainland China. Although further longitudinal studies are required to test whether PSU is a transient phenomenon or a chronic and progressive condition, our study successfully identified socio-demographic and psychological risk factors for PSU. These results, obtained from a random and thus representative sample of undergraduates, opens up new avenues in terms of prevention and regulation policies.
Cognitive Ability, Reward Processing and Personality Associated with Different Aspects of Smartphone Use

Abstract:Smartphone use has become ubiquitous. Keeping smartphones close and always on, with alerts for new messages, etc., means that users experience unprecedented levels of distracting and reinforcing stimulation, with wide-ranging psychological implications. We interviewed 121 students to record aspects of smartphone use, personality, psychological distress (depression/anxiety), cognitive, social-cognitive, and reward processing. We found that questionnaire-measured problematic phone use is linked to poorer academic performance and to higher psychological distress, neuroticism, psychometric impulsivity and image management. Social media use is linked to neuroticism. Keeping a smartphone in hand and frequent checking is associated with extraversion and poorer performance on tests of sustained attention and general intelligence, particularly semantic reasoning. The number of messenger services used is associated with sensitivity to financial rewards and responses to social reinforcement in an instrumental/operant conditioning task. However, the later result links messenger use to resistance to reinforcement, implying a goal-directed association driven by demand characteristics. Overall, the current results, and review of extant literature, suggest that there are generally negative impacts of smartphone use on psychological health, including cognitive function. Furthermore, variation in responses to reward and reinforcement is an important individual differences factor linked particularly to social communication with instant messaging services.
How Does Trait Mindfulness Weaken the Effects of Risk Factors for Adolescent Smartphone Addiction? A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract:As a psychological resource of individuals, trait mindfulness is valuable in facilitating individuals to maintain attention intensity, increase efficiency, and alleviate stress and depression. It can also buffer against the risk factors of addictive behaviors. However, applied research combining trait mindfulness and smartphone addiction with the use of psychological resources is relatively scarce and needs further examination. We constructed a moderated mediation model based on compensatory Internet use and conservation of resources theory (OCR) to examine the effects of social anxiety on adolescent smartphone addiction and to describe how trait mindfulness "works" and "in what contexts it works better". We analyzed 1570 adolescent subjects through a multistage stratified sampling method. Our findings revealed that social anxiety positively predicted smartphone addiction, while trait mindfulness was negatively associated with it. Furthermore, trait mindfulness mitigated smartphone addiction by reducing social anxiety, suggesting a mediating effect of social anxiety on this relationship. Meanwhile, the mediating effect was more pronounced among adolescents with left-behind experience; we found that left-behind experience partially moderated the relationship between social anxiety and smartphone addiction. Adolescents with left-behind experience had more significant compensatory media use with a higher risk of smartphone addiction. This study highlights the potential protective role of trait mindfulness in the development and maintenance of adolescent smartphone addiction. It provides empirical support for applying resource conservation theory and stress buffering theory in this context.

Abstract:Recent research has identified some risk factors for smartphone addiction. However, scarce research has examined the potential influence of sensation seeking on smartphone addiction, and little is known regarding the mediating mechanisms underlying this relationship. The present study examined the predictive role of sensation seeking on adolescent smartphone addiction and investigated whether fear of missing out (FoMO) and procrastination sequentially mediated the relation between sensation seeking and adolescent smartphone addiction. A sample of 794 adolescents completed questionnaires regarding demographics, sensation seeking, FoMO, procrastination, and smartphone addiction. After controlling for demographic covariates, the results indicated that (a) sensation seeking was positively associated with smartphone addiction; (b) both FoMO and procrastination partially mediated the relation between sensation seeking and adolescent smartphone addiction; and (c) FoMO and procrastination sequentially mediated the relation between sensation seeking and adolescent smartphone addiction. This study highlights the underlying mechanisms between sensation seeking and adolescent smartphone addiction, which has important implications for the preventions and interventions of adolescent problematic smartphone use in this digital era.

Abstract:Despite the rapid growth in college students who spend more time on smartphones, study examining the relationship between college experience and smartphone use has been limited. This longitudinal study furthered this line of research by examining the relationship between college adjustment and problematic smartphone use from a comprehensive and pluralist approach. Our results found: First, there existed a bidirectional relationship between college adjustment and problematic smartphone use, and the pattern of bidirectional relationship between college adjustment and problematic smartphone use showed variances as a function of temporal lags. Furthermore, general anxiety mediates the relationship between college adjustment and problematic smartphone use. Last, existential meaninglessness moderates the indirect effect of general anxiety on the the relationship between college adjustment and problematic smartphone use, such that the relationship is stronger, when existential meaninglessness is high. Our findings provides a deep understanding of how college adjustment relates to problematic smartphone use, and theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Smartphones have gained significant popularity. With the rising concerns of compulsive smartphone use, understanding how smartphone users develop compulsive behaviors is crucial. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of flow in the formation of compulsive smartphone use. Drawing upon the flow theory, we incorporate the psychological state of flow as a key factor in our research model. We identify its determinants based on the desirability–feasibility perspective and reinforcement sensitivity theory. We empirically test our model by conducting an online survey with 384 valid responses. We expect that our findings can provide noteworthy insights on the formation of compulsive smartphone use.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Concern exists regarding the potential negative consequences of smartphone addiction among adolescents. This study investigated the effect of use motivations and alexithymia on smartphone addiction among adolescents with two insecure attachment styles, namely, anxious and avoidant attachment. These attachment styles were regarded as mediating variables. Methods: Self-report measures were used to assess use motivations, alexithymia, insecure attachment and smartphone addiction. Data were collected from 748 junior high school students (382 males and 366 females) in northeastern China. Structural equation modeling was used to test our hypothesis that use motivations and alexithymia are directly associated with smartphone addiction and also through the mediation of attachment insecurities. Results: The structural equation modeling results showed a strong and positive correlation between use motivation and smartphone addiction, with avoidant attachment mediating such a relationship. Meanwhile, the two components of alexithymia, difficulty identifying feelings and externally oriented thinking, positively predicted smartphone addiction, with avoidant attachment serving as a mediator of this effect. In addition, the mediation analysis results demonstrated that attachment anxiety mediated the connection between escape drive, extrinsically focused thought, and smartphone addiction. Conclusion: Findings describe how attachment insecurities, smartphone use motivations, and alexithymia can interact with one another to predict smartphone addiction. Smartphone use motivation types and alexithymia symptoms should be taken into consideration when designing targeted intervention programs for smartphone addiction to address the different attachment needs of adolescents, which would be helpful to reduce their smartphone addiction behaviors.

Abstract:People’s overdependence on smartphones has led them to an abundance of psychological well-being issues. Various literature has examined the association between smartphone use, addictive behaviours, and mental well-being. To develop a deeper understanding of the correlation among these factors, the current study aims to find the psychological impact on smartphone use. Smartphone use and psychological well-being, specifically on how adolescents’ media use has led them to mental health issues such as addiction, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and the fear of missing out (FoMO). The results supported hypotheses 1, 2, and 3, smartphone addiction correlates with anxiety, depression, and FoMO; however, the results of the study do not support hypothesis 4, in which there is no correlation between smartphone addiction and sleep issues. In conclusion, smartphone overuse and addiction may subsequently affect an adolescent’s mental well-being.
Understanding and Predicting Compulsive Smartphone Use: an Extension of Reinforcement Sensitivity Approach.

Abstract:Compulsive smartphone use has received increasing attention due to its ubiquitous and disturbing outcomes. However, integrative research that investigates the process and possible antecedents of compulsive behavior in the use of smartphones remains limited. Based on an extensive review of literature on compulsive behavior, we define compulsive smartphone use in general and explain its specific differences from other compulsive behaviors. We propose a research model that uses the reinforcement sensitivity approach to provide a better understanding and explanation for compulsive smartphone use. Both craving and compensation lenses are systematically integrated into this theoretical foundation to identify the underlying mechanism of compulsive smartphone use. We further identify possible situational factors that influence reinforcement sensitivity from social, experiential, and technological perspectives. We believe such an integration of both craving and compensation mechanisms is of crucial importance for scientific and practical research.

Abstract:Objectives Although previous studies have initially noted that psychological needs satisfaction (PNS) might be a significant risk factor for technology addiction (e.g. online gaming addiction and Internet addiction), specific mechanisms involved in the association between PNS and adolescent smartphone addiction are largely unknown. Based on self-determination theory, this cross-sectional study constructed a multiple mediation model to examine whether PNS will influence adolescent smartphone addiction through the mediating roles of social anxiety and loneliness. Methods Eight hundred and ninety-nine Chinese adolescents answered the questionnaire including measures of PNS, social anxiety, loneliness, and smartphone addiction. SPSS 24.0 was used for common method bias test, reliability test, and correlation analysis, and Mplus 7.4 was used to examine the mediating roles of social anxiety and loneliness in the multiple mediation model. Results This study found that (1) PNS was negatively associated with adolescent smartphone addiction; (2) loneliness significantly mediated the association between PNS and smartphone addiction while the mediating role of social anxiety in this association was nonsignificant; and (3) social anxiety and loneliness also sequentially mediated this association. Conclusion This study further enriched potential mechanisms linking PNS and smartphone addiction among adolescents, which may contribute to intervention and prevention programs for adolescent smartphone addiction from the perspective of improving both PNS and negative emotions including social anxiety and loneliness.

Effects of childhood adversity on smartphone addiction: The multiple mediation of life history strategies and smartphone use motivations

Abstract:Given its negative consequence, the high prevalence of smartphone addiction has become a matter for public concern in recent years. This study takes an evolutionary approach to understanding individual differences in one's vulnerability to smartphone addiction and investigate the role childhood adversity and life history (LH) strategies may play in smartphone addiction via various smartphone use motivations. We recruited 956 Chinese university students between the ages of 16 and 28 (M = 19.35, SD = 1.07) who voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire. Results of path analysis showed a significant direct effect of childhood adversity on smartphone addiction. Moreover, childhood adversity was negatively associated with slow LH strategy, which was negatively correlated with smartphone addiction in the path model. Both pastime and social conformity were significant motivation factors, but they had opposite mediating effects on the relationship between slow LH strategy and smartphone addiction. Our findings improved the knowledge of the complex motivational processes between childhood adversity and smartphone addiction from LH perspective. The findings suggest that people with childhood adversity are at-risk for smartphone addiction, but the opposite mediating effects of two motivation factors illustrate the complex influence LH strategies have on human behavior. Various internal mechanisms should be considered simultaneously in future research to develop a more comprehensive understanding of and effective interventions for smartphone addiction.

Abstract:Dependence on smartphones continues to grow, with young adults showing the highest usage. In fact, reliance on smartphones may indicate a behavioral addiction, a concept gaining interest in both research and clinical practice. However, valid and reliable assessments of smartphone addiction are needed. To this end, we developed the Smartphone Addiction Measure (SAM) with an initial sample (113 participants; 32 males, 81 females) and assessed the validity and reliability of this new measure. Principle components analysis with an additional sample (286 participants; 78 males, 207 females, 1 other) revealed four factors generally associated with addiction, including salience, mood modification, withdrawal, and conflict, thus providing support for the SAM as a valid measure of addictive behavior related to smartphone use. Analyses also revealed good validity and reliability (221 participants; 38 males, 179 females, 4 other) that sufficiently support the SAM as a psychometrically sound assessment for smartphone addiction.

Abstract:Research has identified a robust connection between adverse childhood experiences and smartphone addiction. However, few studies have explored the close links between various smartphone application addictions and their co-occurrence. To bridge this gap, the current study used one pilot study and two formal studies to explore the co-occurrence of different smartphone application addictions, as well as their potential risk factors and internal mechanisms. In the pilot study ( N = 118), adolescents with smartphone addictions were interviewed to determine their regularly-used applications and content type. In Study 1 ( N = 1962), network analysis was used to assess six application preferences within the broader umbrella of smartphone addiction, and the potential relationship effect between adverse childhood experiences and smartphone addiction. In Study 2 ( N = 835), the causal relationship was further verified through a longitudinal study which also found that alexithymia and social sensitivity played mediating roles in smartphone application addition. The application addiction with the highest centrality was for short videos, followed by games and then social media applications. In addition, a range of social experiences associated with violence (e.g., neglect and bullying) were found to be key determinants of smartphone addiction, in that these experiences hinder adolescents' socialization by increasing their alexithymia and social sensitivity, leading them to become glued to their smartphones. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of how adverse childhood experiences increase adolescents' risk of smartphone addiction, while also providing new insights into the co-occurrence of addictions to various common smartphone applications.

Beyond Smartphone Overuse

Abstract:Current research on smartphone addiction has mainly focused on addiction at the device level. This motivated us to explore more specifically on app addiction. We investigate smartphone usage for college students using surveys, logged data, and interviews. Specifically, we adapted existing smartphone addiction assessment instruments to measure app addiction. The analysis of our data shows that social and communication apps are the top 2 most addictive categories among participants. Female and male participants show no significant difference in terms of smartphone addiction. However, female participants tend to report that they are addicted to more apps. The psychological factors associated with app addiction are different between app categories. For example, compared to communication apps, participants report that it is easier to withdraw from social apps, but more difficult to control time spent on them. Correlation analysis between app usage features and app addictiveness scores reveals that compulsive open times, usage duration, and regularity of usage are good indicators of app addiction, though response time to notifications has limited predictive power.

Abstract:This study used a cross-sectional study design to investigate whether the mindfulness trait was a protective factor against problematic smartphone use (PSPU) of early adolescents, and whether negative affectivity and fear of missing out (FoMO) mediated this relationship. The study selected a sample of middle school students (N = 517, 46.03% males, Mage = 13.81, SD = 1.40) in China. The results of the structural equation modelling indicated that (a) mindfulness significantly and negatively predicted PSPU, (b) FoMO played a mediating role between mindfulness and PSPU, (c) negative affectivity (including depression and anxiety) played a mediating role between mindfulness and PSPU, but loneliness did not, and (d) negative affectivity and FoMO played a chain-mediated role, and depression, anxiety, and loneliness played a chain-mediated role with FoMO between mindfulness and PSPU. We discuss the possibility that high levels of mindfulness in early adolescents may reduce the short-term effects of problematic smartphone use by reducing negative emotions and FoMO and relate our results to an emphasis on the role of enhanced mindfulness in long-term internal self-regulation and well-being. Findings have implications for individuals and schools for PSPU prevention and intervention.
Relationships between Smartphone Addiction and Smartphone Usage Types, Depression, ADHD, Stress, Interpersonal Problems, and Parenting Attitude with Middle School Students

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between smartphone addiction of middle school students and smartphone usage types, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), stress, interpersonal problems, and parenting attitude. In particular, we wanted to find out how smartphone usage types predict smartphone addiction when controlling depression, ADHD, perceived stress, interpersonal problems, and parenting attitudes, which are the main predictors of existing smartphone addiction in this study. Methods: The subjects of this study included 487 local middle school students (253 girls and 234 boys). The measurement instruments used were the smartphone addiction scale, patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Korean ADHD rating scales (K-ARS), perceived stress scale (PSS), Short form of the Korean-inventory of interpersonal problems circumplex scales (KIIP-SC), and the parenting attitude scale. We identified the relationships between the variables with correlation analysis and examined the predictors of smartphone addiction with hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Result: The factors that influence smartphone addiction were sex (β = 3.14, P < 0.01), stress (β = 2.99, P < 0.01), and interpersonal problems (β = 3.81, P < 0.001). In addition, when the confounding variables of smartphone addiction were controlled to examine the effects of smartphone usage types on smartphone addiction, social network service (SNS) (β = 2.66, P < 0.01) and music/videos (β = 2.73, P < 0.01) were found to significantly positively affect smartphone addiction, whereas study (β = -2.54, P < 0.05) had a significantly negatively effect. And these factors explained 29.5% of the variance in smartphone addiction. Conclusion: The order of the usage types with the highest influence on smartphone addiction was: enjoying music/videos, SNS, and study. This suggests that selective intervention depending on the main smartphone usage type can be effective.
