Abstract:Smart tangible toys, designed for hand manipulation, can transform fine motor skills assessment into enjoyable activities which are engaging for children to play (partially) unsupervised. Such toys can support school teachers and parents for early detection of deficiencies in motor skills development of children, as well as objectively monitor the progress of skills development over time. To make a game enjoyable for children with different skills level, these smart toys could offer an adaptive game play. In this paper we describe the design and deployment of a digital board game, equipped with sensors, which we use to explore the potential of using smart toys for fine motor skills assessment in children.

Abstract:Emerging pervasive technologies like smart textiles make it possible to develop new and more accessible healthcare services for patients independently of their location or time. However, none of these new e-health solutions guarantee a complete user acceptance, especially in cases requiring extensive interaction between the user and the solution. So far, researchers have focused their efforts on new interactions techniques to improve the perception of privacy and confidence of the people using e-health services. In this way, the use of smart everyday objects arises as an interesting approach to facilitate the required interaction and increase user acceptance. Such Smart Daily Objects together with smart textiles provide researchers with a novel way to introduce sophisticated sensor technology in the daily life of people. This work presents a sensorized smart toy for assessment of psychomotor development in early childhood. The aim of this work is to design, develop, and evaluate the usability and playfulness of a smart textile-enabled sensorized toy that facilitates the user engagement in a personalized monitoring healthcare activity. To achieve this objective the monitoring is based on a smart textile sensorized toy as catalyzer of acceptance and multimodal sensing sources to monitor psychomotor development activities during playtime.

A model for using developmental science to create effective early intervention programs and technologies to improve children's developmental outcomes

Abstract:Children born with a variety of environmental or medical risk factors may exhibit delays in global development. Very often, such delays are identified at preschool or school age, when children are severely overdue for effective early interventions that can alleviate the delays. This chapter proposes a conceptual model of child development to inform the creation of interventions and rehabilitative technologies that can be provided very early in development, throughout the first year of life, to optimize children's future developmental outcomes. The model suggests that early sensorimotor skills are antecedent and foundational for future motor, cognitive, language, and social development. As an example, this chapter describes how children's early postural control and exploratory movements facilitate the development of future object exploration behaviors that provide enhanced opportunities for learning and advance children's motor, cognitive, language, and social development. An understanding of the developmental pathways in the model can enable the design of effective intervention programs and rehabilitative technologies that target sensorimotor skills in the first year of life with the goal of minimizing or ameliorating the delays that are typically identified at preschool or school age. Specific examples of early interventions and rehabilitative technologies that have effectively advanced children's motor and cognitive development by targeting early sensorimotor skills and behaviors are provided.

Abstract:Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder typically assessed and diagnosed through observational analysis of behavior. Assessment exclusively based on behavioral observation sessions requires a lot of time for the diagnosis. In recent years, there is a growing need to make assessment processes more motivating and capable to provide objective measures of the disorder. New evidence showed that motor abnormalities may underpin the disorder and provide a computational marker to enhance assessment and diagnostic processes. Thus, a measure of motor patterns could provide a means to assess young children with autism and a new starting point for rehabilitation treatments. In this study, we propose to use a software tool that through a smart tablet device and touch screen sensor technologies could be able to capture detailed information about children’s motor patterns. We compared movement trajectories of autistic children and typically developing children, with the aim to identify autism motor signatures analyzing their coordinates of movements. We used a smart tablet device to record coordinates of dragging movements carried out by 60 children (30 autistic children and 30 typically developing children) during a cognitive task. Machine learning analysis of children’s motor patterns identified autism with 93% accuracy, demonstrating that autism can be computationally identified. The analysis of the features that most affect the prediction reveals and describes the differences between the groups, confirming that motor abnormalities are a core feature of autism.

Abstract:Neurodevelopmental disorders are on the rise, yet their average diagnosis is after 4.5 years old. This delay is partly due to reliance on social-communication criteria, which require longer maturation than scaffolding elements of neuromotor control. Much earlier criteria could include reflexes, monitoring of the quality of spontaneous movements from central pattern generators and maturation of intentional movements and their overall sensation. General Movement Assessment (GMA) studies these features using observational means, but the last two decades have seen a surge in digital tools that enable non-invasive, continuous tracking of infants' spontaneous movements. Despite their importance, these tools are not yet broadly used. In this work, using CiteSpace, VOSViewer and SciMAT software, we investigate the evolution of the literature on GMA and the methods in use today, to estimate how digital techniques are being adopted. To that end, we created maps of key word co-occurrence networks, co-author networks, document co-citation analysis and strategic diagrams of 295 publications based on a search in the Web of Science, Dimensions and SCOPUS databases for: 'general movement assessment' OR 'general movements assessment'. The nodes on the maps were categorized by size, cluster groups and year of publication. We found that the state-of-the-art methodology to diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders still relies heavily on observation. Several groups in classical GMA research have branched out to incorporate new techniques, but few groups have adopted digital means. We report on additional analyses of methods and biosensors usage and propose that combining traditional clinical observation criteria with digital means may allow earlier diagnoses and interventional therapies for infants.

An exploratory study of the relationship between motor skills and indicators of cognitive and socio-emotional development in preschoolers

Abstract:Motor skills develop rapidly during early childhood and are considered important for optimal child development. However, little is known about the relationship of motor skills with indicators of cognitive and socio-emotional development in typically developing preschoolers. In view of this, the present study examined the association of gross motor and fine motor skills with executive functions and prosocial behaviour in preschoolers. The study sample consisted of 111 participants between 3 and 5 years of age, who were assessed using the short version of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, second edition (BOT-2); the head-toes-knees-shoulders task; the Corsi block-tapping test (CBTT); the dimensional change card sort test (DCCS); and a teacher-rated prosocial behaviour questionnaire (PBQ). The results revealed significant positive associations between motor skills and executive functions as well as prosocial behaviour. Specifically, fine motor skills were twice as strong as a predictor for response inhibition compared to gross motor skills whereas gross motor skills dominated over fine motor skills in predicting prosocial behaviour. The findings of the study highlight the need to promote motor skills during early years of development.

Abstract:Advances in technology and artificial intelligence (smart healthcare) open up a range of possibilities for precision intervention in the field of health sciences. The objectives of this study were to analyse the functionality of using supervised (prediction and classification) and unsupervised (clustering) machine learning techniques to analyse results related to the development of functional skills in patients at developmental ages of 0–6 years. We worked with a sample of 113 patients, of whom 49 were cared for in a specific centre for people with motor impairments (Group 1) and 64 were cared for in a specific early care programme for patients with different impairments (Group 2). The results indicated that in Group 1, chronological age predicted the development of functional skills at 85% and in Group 2 at 65%. The classification variable detected was functional development in the upper extremities. Two clusters were detected within each group that allowed us to determine the patterns of functional development in each patient with respect to functional skills. The use of smart healthcare resources has a promising future in the field of early care. However, data recording in web applications needs to be planned, and the automation of results through machine learning techniques is required.

Abstract:The role that design engineering plays in the quality of life and well-being of people with autism spectrum disorder around the world is extremely relevant; products are highly helpful when used as “intermediaries” in social interactions, as well as in the reinforcement of cognitive, motor and sensory skills. One of the most significant challenges engineers have to face lies in the complexity of defining those functional requirements of objects that will efficiently satisfy the specific needs of children with autism within a single product. Furthermore, despite the growing trends that point toward the integration of new technologies in the creation of toys for typically developing children, the variety of specialized smart products aimed at children with autism spectrum disorder is very limited. Based on this evidence the KEYme project was created, where a multifunctional smart toy is developed as a reinforcement system for multiple needs which is adaptable to different kinds of autism for therapies, educational centers or family environments. This approach involves the knowledge transfer from the latest neuroscience, medicine and psychology contributions to the engineering and industrial design field.

Early motor development and cognitive abilities among Mexican preschoolers

Abstract:Psychomotricity plays a very important role in children's development, especially for learning involving reading-writing and mathematical calculations. Evaluate motor development in children 3 years old and its relationship with their cognitive abilities at the age of 5 years. Based on a cohort study, we analyzed the information about motor performance evaluated at 3 years old by Peabody Motor Scale and cognitive abilities at 5 years old. The association was estimated using linear regression models adjusted by mother's intelligence quotient, sex, Bayley mental development index at 18 months, and quality of the environment at home (HOME scale). 148 children whose motor performance was determined at age 3 and was evaluated later at age 5 to determine their cognitive abilities. Cognitive abilities (verbal, quantitative, and memory) measured by McCarthy Scales. Significant positive associations were observed between stationary balance at age 3 with verbal abilities (β = 0.67, p = .04) and memory (β = 0.81, p = .02) at 5 years. Grasping and visual-motor integration were significant and positively associated with quantitative abilities (β = 0.74, p = .005; β = 0.61, p = .01) and memory (β = 2.11, p = .001; β = 1.74, p = .004). The results suggest that early motor performance contributes to the establishment of cognitive abilities at 5 years. Evaluation and early motor stimulation before the child is faced with formal learning likely helps to create neuronal networks that facilitate the acquisition of academic knowledge.
Beyond the Classroom: Investigating the Relationship between Psychomotor Development and Academic Achievement in 4-12-Year-Olds

Abstract:Background/objectives: The relevance of psychomotor skills in children's growth is being increasingly recognized. The transversal role of psychomotor skills in learning performance is described through a link between cognitive and motor functioning, promoting socio-affective-expressive competencies, but there is a scarcity of evidence from the field. A two-fold goal was defined: to investigate the relationship between psychomotor functions and academic performance and to examine the factors affecting children's academic performance. Methods: The Portuguese versions of the Neuropsychomotor Functions Assessment Battery for Children (NPmot.pt), Preschool Diagnostic Tasks (PRE), and School Learning Skills Battery (SLSB) were applied to 350 children (85.72 ± 24.23 months) with and without disabilities attending mainstream schools. Results: Pearson correlations and regression analyses were used. NPmot.pt domains showed moderate to strong correlations with PRE domains (0.30 < r < 0.82) and weak ones with SLSB domains (r < 0.30). Psychomotor development is a stronger predictor (p < 0.001) of pre-academic performance outcomes: (βTonus = 0.67, βGross Motor Skills = 1.04, βSpatial Orientation = -1.44, βRhythm = -1.59 and βAuditory Attention = 3.68) than of academic performance above 7 years old (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Results strengthen the importance of psychomotor skills development from an early age, also at school, with implications for an early psychomotor assessment and intervention for children with and without disabilities. Tailor-fit interventions, including strategies to improve psychomotor skills, should be promoted during the school process of all children for a successful learning process.
Towards an AI-driven soft toy for automatically detecting and classifying infant-toy interactions using optical force sensors

Abstract:Introduction: It is crucial to identify neurodevelopmental disorders in infants early on for timely intervention to improve their long-term outcomes. Combining natural play with quantitative measurements of developmental milestones can be an effective way to swiftly and efficiently detect infants who are at risk of neurodevelopmental delays. Clinical studies have established differences in toy interaction behaviors between full-term infants and pre-term infants who are at risk for cerebral palsy and other developmental disorders. Methods: The proposed toy aims to improve the quantitative assessment of infant-toy interactions and fully automate the process of detecting those infants at risk of developing motor delays. This paper describes the design and development of a toy that uniquely utilizes a collection of soft lossy force sensors which are developed using optical fibers to gather play interaction data from infants laying supine in a gym. An example interaction database was created by having 15 adults complete a total of 2480 interactions with the toy consisting of 620 touches, 620 punches-"kick substitute," 620 weak grasps and 620 strong grasps. Results: The data is analyzed for patterns of interaction with the toy face using a machine learning model developed to classify the four interactions present in the database. Results indicate that the configuration of 6 soft force sensors on the face created unique activation patterns. Discussion: The machine learning algorithm was able to identify the distinct action types from the data, suggesting the potential usability of the toy. Next steps involve sensorizing the entire toy and testing with infants.
Towards early prediction of neurodevelopmental disorders: Computational model for Face Touch and Self-adaptors in Infants

Abstract:Infants' neurological development is heavily influenced by their motor skills. Evaluating a baby's movements is key to understanding possible risks of developmental disorders in their growth. Previous research in psychology has shown that measuring specific movements or gestures such as face touches in babies is essential to analyse how babies understand themselves and their context. This research proposes the first automatic approach that detects face touches from video recordings by tracking infants' movements and gestures. The study uses a multimodal feature fusion approach mixing spatial and temporal features and exploits skeleton tracking information to generate more than 170 aggregated features of hand, face and body. This research proposes data-driven machine learning models for the detection and classification of face touch in infants. We used cross dataset testing to evaluate our proposed models. The models achieved 87.0% accuracy in detecting face touches and 71.4% macro-average accuracy in detecting specific face touch locations with significant improvements over Zero Rule and uniform random chance baselines. Moreover, we show that when we run our model to extract face touch frequencies of a larger dataset, we can predict the development of fine motor skills during the first 5 months after birth.

Abstract:The occurrence of preterm birth is correlated with the potential emergence of disabilities in children. Early intervention programs are designed to promote better developmental outcomes. These interventions employ family-centered methodologies, wherein parents are instructed to facilitate neurodevelopment, thereby promoting heightened involvement of the child in their daily activities. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of early family-based interventions on motor, cognitive, and language development. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted utilizing the databases PubMed, Medline, PEDro, Scopus, CINAHL Complete, SciELO, and Open Grey. The search terms utilized included NDT (neuro-developmental treatment), Bobath, neurodevelopmental therapy, parents administered, family administered, physical therapy modalities, early intervention (educational), early intervention, premature infant, preterm, and premature. Randomized clinical trials and observational studies written in English or Spanish were taken into consideration. The initial search resulted in 420 articles. After removing duplicates and applying the selection criteria, 12 articles were selected for the systematic review and 5 articles were selected for the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis revealed a significant association between early intervention and enhanced cognitive function ( p = 0.01) in this study. Additionally, the meta-analysis indicated improvements resulting from early family-based intervention ( p = 0.02) in motor function. Early motor interventions that emphasize parent involvement and education in neurodevelopment show significant outcomes in motor and cognitive areas at 2 years of age in very premature or extremely premature infants. However, inconclusive effects have been found in the language area, which is the least studied domain. Due to the methodological heterogeneity observed, further research is needed to establish conclusive decisions regarding the administration of these interventions and the determination of key evaluation periods.

Abstract:Early screening, which can lead to early diagnosis and intervention for children with autism (ASD), can significantly improve their life quality. Consequently, the observational process of the ASD diagnosis and the lack of experts make the technology-based ASD screening methods more demanding. On the other hand, early ASD screening based on behavioral patterns is one of the most reliable methods that could be accomplished by analyzing children’s playing patterns. Thus, in this paper, we present an extension of our initial sensorized toy car functionalities by adding shaft encoders to detect attention to details and interest in rotating objects in children with ASD. Using the two modalities to detect different ASD symptoms improved our screening accuracy by more than 10%. Having such a sensorized toy car, which can be used at homes or clinics for screening ASD without high expertise, can improve the life of children with ASD and their families by providing an initial screening for further evaluation. This is essential for sustainable development, especially considering the increased rate of children with ASD around the world.

Abstract:This paper describes a tangible, interactive platform presented here as an early prototype, designed to evaluate the child’s social interaction with the caregiver, during play activities based on turn-taking rules. The platform is composed by 2 elements, each one providing relevant behavioural data: (a) an interactive soft toy, called Octopus X-8, able to discriminate between 2 users and to respond accordingly, by emitting rewarding sensory feedback when the game rules are observed: this toy provides data about the turn-taking interaction (e.g. users’ observance of the turn, timing of rewards, sensors activity); (b) a pair of smart glasses worn by the caregiver, which provides an AI-based evaluation of the eye contact with the child. At the end of the play session, the data from the 2 sources are merged, so as to produce an overall, objective evaluation of the social interaction between the two users. A pilot study, involving a child undergoing neuropsychological assessment, shows how collected data are coherent with the video recording of the experimental session. We then propose the platform as a potential tool to monitor the behaviour of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Enhancing early autism diagnosis through machine learning: Exploring raw motion data for classification

Abstract:In recent years, research has been demonstrating that movement analysis, utilizing machine learning methods, can be a promising aid for clinicians in supporting autism diagnostic process. Within this field of research, we aim to explore new models and delve into the detailed observation of certain features that previous literature has identified as prominent in the classification process. Our study employs a game-based tablet application to collect motor data. We use artificial neural networks to analyze raw trajectories in a "drag and drop" task. We compare a two-features model (utilizing only raw coordinates) with a four-features model (including velocities and accelerations). The aim is to assess the effectiveness of raw data analysis and determine the impact of acceleration on autism classification. Our results revealed that both models demonstrate promising accuracy in classifying motor trajectories. The four-features model consistently outperforms the two-features model, as evidenced by accuracy values (0.90 vs. 0.76). However, our findings support the potential of raw data analysis in objectively assessing motor behaviors related to autism. While the four-features model excels, the two-features model still achieves reasonable accuracy. Addressing limitations related to sample size and noise is essential for future research. Our study emphasizes the importance of integrating intelligent solutions to enhance and assist autism traditional diagnostic process and intervention, paving the way for more effective tools in assessing motor skills.

The contributions of motor skill proficiency to cognitive and social development in early childhood

Abstract:With limited evidence from intervention studies, causal relationships between motor competence and cognitive and social development have yet to be clearly established. In this research, we investigated whether a targeted training programme to improve fundamental movement skills (i.e., object control, locomotor) in young children would also lead to improvements in the cognitive (i.e., executive function) and social (i.e., socioemotional competence) domains. Using a two-arm group randomised intervention design, 185 children aged 36 to 60 months (mean 47.51, SD 8.11 months) were allocated to a motor skill intervention group or an active control group. The intervention was implemented over one school year, and outcomes were monitored across five time points. Longitudinal analysis was performed using hierarchical linear mixed-effects and latent growth curve models. Participation in the motor skill intervention led to higher rates of development of object control skills ( p < 0.001) and executive function ( p < 0.001). A dose‒response relationship was found in which those children who displayed greater development of object control skills over time also displayed greater development of executive function ( p = 0.001). We found no significant effects of the intervention on locomotor skills, social behaviours, or socioemotional competence. These findings provide evidence of a causal relationship between motor and cognitive development.

Development of Smart Kiddo Games as an Effort to Improve Physical Motor and Language Abilities in Early Childhood

Abstract:Sensitive period is when children quickly learn and build mindsets through experiences. This research aims to develop Smart Kiddo Games as an Effort to Improve Physical Motor and Language Ability in Early Childhood. This research is Research and Development using the approaching model developed by Borg & Gall. Starting with a preliminary study, planning, and game product development, continued to the product validation stage (game model) by two material expert validators and two game experts. Product validity analysis using the Aiken formula. Based on the results of the validity test of the assessment instrument by material experts and game experts, all showed results ≥ 0.05 (valid). Thus, it can be concluded that Smart Kiddo Games are appropriate for use in learning as an effort to improve the physical motoric and language abilities of early childhood. Furthermore, it is hoped that it can become one of the most effective and enjoyable early childhood learning strategies, according to the principles and stages of early childhood development.
A Bibliometric and Visualization Analysis of Motor Learning in Preschoolers and Children over the Last 15 Years

Abstract:Motor learning enables preschoolers and children to acquire fundamental skills that are critical to their development. The current study sought to conduct a bibliometric and visualization analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of motor-learning progress in preschoolers and children over the previous 15 years. The number of studies is constantly growing, with the United States and Australia, as well as other productive institutions and authors, at the leading edge. The dominant disciplines were Neurosciences and Neurology, Psychology, Rehabilitation, and Sport Sciences. The journals Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, Human Movement Science, Physical Therapy, Neuropsychology, Journal of Motor Behavior, and Journal of Experimental Child Psychology have been the most productive and influential in this regard. The most common co-citations for clinical symptoms were for cerebral palsy, developmental coordination disorder, and autism. Research has focused on language impairment (speech disorders, explicit learning, and instructor-control feedback), as well as effective intervention strategies. Advances in brain mechanisms and diagnostic indicators, as well as new intervention and rehabilitation technologies (virtual reality, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and transcranial direct current stimulation), have shifted research frontiers and progress. The cognitive process is critical in intervention, rehabilitation, and new technology implementation and should not be overlooked. Overall, our broad overview identifies three major areas: brain mechanism research, clinical practice (intervention and rehabilitation), and new technology application.
