Abstract:We present a 14-month-old male with a large left axillary lipoblastoma and its management. Treatment of choice was complete excision. Incomplete excision leads to recurrence. Follow-up of at least five years was suggested.

Abstract:Abstract Background Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the adipose tissue occurring most commonly in infants and young children. This tumor can present as a localized, well-circumscribed lesion (lipoblastoma) or as a multi-centric lesion (lipoblastomatosis). Case presentation This is a case report of lipoblastoma in a 19-month-old male with 9 months history of rapidly progressing axillary mass. Examination revealed a well-circumscribed right axillary mass measuring 25 cm × 20 cm with normal overlying skin and prominent, visibly distended superficial veins. He had surgical excision of the mass. Histologic examination revealed lipoblastoma. There has been no recurrence in the last 21 months of follow-up. Conclusion The report is presented for its rarity and also for its potential to pose diagnostic difficulty to surgeons. Surgical excision offers the best chance of cure. Long-term follow-up is also important to detect recurrence.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is an uncommon benign soft tissue tumor of infancy and early childhood with a predilection for the extremities. CT and MRI can confirm the presence of fat components in the tumor. In addition, MRI better shows the anatomical extent. By showing lipoblastoma proliferation, histology confirms the diagnosis. Gross total excision is the treatment of choice. The authors report a case of unusual lipoblastoma of the axillary region, composed of fatty components with multiple cystic areas presenting at birth, with recurrence 9 months after excision.
A giant gluteal lipoblastoma in a 24-month-old girl: A case report

Abstract:Introduction and importance: Lipoblastomas are rare benign tumors that arise from embryonic white fat and almost always occur in babies and children. Case presentation: Here, we report a case of a giant gluteal lipoblastoma in a 24-month-old girl that was successfully treated via complete resection. Clinical discussion: The gluteal location as in this case is an exceptional location. These tumors generally are benign, and there have been no reports of metastasis. Local recurrence can occur, particularly with lipoblastomatosis, when excision is incomplete. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice. The goal is always complete resection with negative margins, but this can be difficult to obtain with lipoblastomatosis. No spontaneous resolution or reduction of lipoblastoma has ever been reported, and a recurrence rate of 14 % and 25 % is reported in cases of incomplete excision. Conclusion: Lipoblastoma is a benign neoplasm of immature fat tissue occurring in infants. The gluteal region location is relatively rare. Imaging, especially MRI, is helpful in diagnosis and preoperative evaluation. An adequate pathological examination could bring huge benefits. Total surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Subtotal resection and "wait and see policy" may be discussed for highly risky intervention.
Current management of lipoblastoma

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare and benign tumor arising from embryonal fat cells. It is generally diagnosed in children younger than 3 years of age and can occur in the extremities or on the trunk. We present our series of 10 children with lipoblastoma treated at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel between 2011 and 2016. Six boys and four girls underwent tumor resection at a median age of 2 years and 3 months (range 5 months to 5.6 years). Locations were trunk (6), groin (2), perineum (1), and omentum (1). Follow up ranges from 1 to 5 years. Two patients had a local recurrence and required a second resection 2 years (perineal) and 6 years (trunk) after the first surgery without further recurrence at 1.9 and 2.9 years, respectively. Conclusion: Higher awareness of lipoblastoma enables optimal imaging strategies and resection. Long follow up is required due to local recurrences. The treatment of choice consists of complete, but non mutilating surgical resection. Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumor of infancy and childhood, with similar radiographic imaging findings as malignant liposarcoma. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish through other diagnostics and clinical features. We present our experience with the diagnosis and clinical management of this entity. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify children treated for lipoblastoma at our institution over a 30-year period. Charts were evaluated for diagnostic methods, treatment, and recurrence risk. Results: A total of 9 males and 3 females were identified. The age at diagnosis ranged from 8 months to 44 years. Imaging modalities employed included ultrasound (N = 5), MRI (N = 12), X-ray (N = 8), and CT (N = 3). The tumor location was reported in the lower extremity (N = 8) and upper extremity (N = 4). The tumor size ranged from 1.7 to 18 cm (mean=7.08 cm). All patients underwent complete resection. Available pathology reports noted masses featuring mature adipocytes (N = 1), fibrous septa (N = 2), focal myxoid changes (N = 1), and spindle cells (N = 2). Nine patients underwent chromosomal analysis, which demonstrated five chromosome 8 abnormalities. No recurrences were reported. Three patients had follow-up imaging, and 11 had follow-up visits between 2 weeks to 15 years. Conclusion: Lipoblastoma is an uncommon childhood neoplasm of embryonic white fat that can also be present in adolescence and adulthood. Imaging, especially MRI, is helpful in limiting the differential diagnosis, but definitive diagnosis requires tissue biopsy, which should be obtained with core biopsy rather than fine needle aspiration. Surgical resection is curative with few complications. We do not recommend routine monitoring as recurrence is unlikely.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare exclusively benign encapsulated tumor arising from embryonic white fat. Tumor occurs primarily in infancy and early childhood. It often presents as painless swelling in extremities and trunk, and rarely develops in head and neck and other sites. We report case of a 15 months old boy with a gradually enlarging, painless swelling over the left side of the dorsum of nose. Computed tomography scan revealed a subdermal soft tissue mass. Treatment remains complete surgical excision. Diagnosis is determined by histopathologic findings. Histologically, lipoblastoma reveals immature adipose cells in varying stages of maturity arranged into lobules separated by septa. No recurrence of tumor has been noted over 6 months of follow-up of this patient.

Abstract:Introduction: Lipoblastoma is a rare mesenchymal benign tumor of the white fat cells that affect mostly infants and children below 3 years old. MLipoblastoma can be found in various locations in the body, however, it is usually located in the extremities, lower extremities in particular. Case report: We describe a case of a 2-year-old Middle Eastern boy who has a rare lipoblastoma of his left shoulder that is unusual. Conclusion: The most common presentation of this rare tumor is a child younger than 3 years old with asymptomatic, painless, rapidly growing mass that warrants an appropriate index of suspicion to avoid misdiagnosis. Complete excision with free margins is fundamental as a definitive treatment of this benign tumor to eradicate any chance of recurrence or any possible complications including compressive symptoms, magnetic resonance imaging may be helpful in identifying the nature of the mass, however, the diagnosis confirmed postoperatively through histological and cytogenetic analysis. Chromosomal analysis is quite helpful in differentiating lipoblastoma from liposarcoma because they have different management and prognosis.

Abstract:Abstract Background Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of embryonal fat affecting mainly children below 3 years of age. It presents usually as a painless rapidly growing soft lobular mass in the extremities, trunk, and less frequently in the head-neck region. Preoperative imaging is used to assess the extent of disease and aid surgical planning. Complete surgical excision without injury to surrounding vital structures is the treatment of choice. Case presentation We report three interesting lipoblastoma cases: mediastinal lipoblastoma with airway compression and ipsilateral diaphragmatic eventration, neck lipoblastoma with intrathoracic extension, and huge thoracic inlet lipoblastoma with compression of common carotid and Lt subclavian arteries, brachial plexus, and ipsilateral diaphragmatic eventration. Complete excision of lipoblastoma mass was done via neck incision in two cases, and the third case required thoracoscopic excision of intrathoracic remnant 6 months later. All three patients had an excellent outcome. Conclusions Management of cervicothoracic lipoblastoma is a surgical challenge due to the potential for rapid growth and extension to different fascial planes; however, successful excision can be achieved via a neck approach. Complete surgical excision is essential to prevent local recurrence and improve the outcome.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumour which originates from embryonic fat tissue mainly affecting children below 3 years of age and is exceptionally rare in the thoracic cavity. Preoperative imaging is used to assess the extent of disease and aid surgical planning but definitive diagnosis is usually by histopathological examination. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Because of the tendency for these lesions to recur, regular follow-up is mandatory even with presumed complete excision. In this study, we report the case of a 3-year-old boy who presented with a huge intrathoracic tumour occupying the whole of the left hemithorax. A complete resection of the tumour was undertaken, with histopathology report confirming the diagnosis of lipoblastoma. The relevant literature review was done. At 6 months of follow-up, there was no recurrent tumour on imaging and the child was thriving well.

Abstract:Objective: Lipoblastoma is a rare neoplasm that occurs mostly in infants and children. Although benign, it has a tendency for local recurrence. Results: Clinical and pathological features of 23 cases of lipoblastoma described. Patients' age ranged from 8 months to 18 years with mean and median age 4.1 and 2.5 years, respectively. Male:female ratio was 2.8:1. Most common sites were lower extremities (9 cases), followed by abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum (4 cases), and scrotum/groin (3 cases). Grossly, 22 tumors were well circumscribed and multi nodular. All cases showed lobules composed of adipocytes and lipoblasts with intervening fibrous septa and fine vascular network. Myxoid change, capsule formation and septation were seen in all cases. Zonation was seen in 2 cases. Follow-up was available in 14 out of 23 patients. Of these, 13 were alive and free of disease with no evidence of any recurrent lesion. One patient with a mediastinal infiltrating lipoblastoma experienced 4 recurrences. Lipoblastoma is a benign adipocytic neoplasm of infants and young children. Correlation of clinical and histological features helps in reaching a correct diagnosis. Owing to a high recurrence rate following incomplete resection, a complete resection is essential. Prognosis is excellent after complete resection.
Lipoblastoma in children: Review of 12 cases

Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of infancy and early childhood. Symptoms vary depending on localization, and signs of compression of adjacent organs may be seen. Methods: A total of 12 children with pathologically proven lipoblastoma from 2000 to 2014 were reviewed retrospectively for their clinical features, treatment and follow up. Results: There were seven boys and five girls between 7.5 months and 7.5 years of age. The most common symptom was painless rapid-growing mass. The tumors were located in the neck, the abdomen, the groin, pelvis, axilla, glutea, labium majus, thigh and trunk. The largest tumor was in a retroperitoneal location and was 13 × 10 cm in size. Complete resection was performed in 10 patients. All of these patients were followed without any evidence of recurrence. Subtotal excision was performed in two patients. At a median follow up of 38 months (range, 1.8 months-10 years), all patients were disease free. Conclusions: Lipoblastoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of rapidly growing mass in patients <3 years of age. Total excision is the treatment of choice with preservation of vital organs. The prognosis is excellent despite large tumor size and local invasion. Recurrence rate is high in incompletely resected tumors. Regular follow up is important for early detection of recurrence.

Abstract:Intermuscular lipomas are rare soft tissue tumors of mesenchymal origin. They are closely correlated with other benign and malign mesenchymal tumors in clinical presentation and imaging, causing problems in diagnosis and treatment. This study examined a rare giant intermuscular lipoma of the hip and its management, allowing clinicians to become familiar with this lesion. Furthermore, the clinical data of 13 patients with pathologically confirmed giant intermuscular lipomas (1 case treated by the authors, the remaining 12 cases reported in the Chinese literature during the period from January, 1992 to May, 2012) were also reviewed and analyzed. Based on the review, intermuscular lipomas were found to be more common in males and usually presented with an asymptomatic mass, with an average patient age of 39.7 years (range, 11-70), while symptom duration was between 1 month and 10 years. The most common tumor origin sites were the thigh and forearm and the option of treatment was surgical excision. The present study showed that it is crucial for the surgeon to consider infiltrating lipomas when dealing with deep soft tissue masses, while complete removal of the lesion was vital to avoid recurrence.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, soft tissue neoplasm most commonly seen in children less than 3 years. It is usually seen on the trunk and on the limbs and rarely in the head and neck. In our case, a child of age 1 year and 3 months presented with a swelling over the nape of the neck. The swelling had rapidly increased in size and was associated with difficulty in neck movements. Intraoperatively it was found to have very minimal adhesions to the underlying muscles of neck. Histopathological examination confirmed it to be a lipoblastoma. The swelling was removed by wide excision, and there was no postoperative complication.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are benign adipocytic tumors seen in children less than 3 years of age. Awareness amongst surgeons of this fast growing lipomatous tumor in young children is important to avoid mutilating surgery and chemotherapy. Histological diagnosis of lipoblastoma is sometimes difficult because of close resemblance with myxoid, round cell, and well-differentiated liposarcoma. We came across a series of six cases of lipoblastoma/lipoblastomatosis, over the last 10 years (2002-2012). Of these, we had three cases of lipoblastomatosis, one of which recurred after 2 months. All others were resected completely and successfully.

Abstract:A rare case of a successfully excised intra- and extrathoracic lipoblastoma of the anterior chest wall in a 13-month-old female infant is reported. Histopathology and cytogenetical analysis established the diagnosis of a lipoblastoma. The differential diagnosis, histology and cytogenetical evaluation of lipomatous neoplasms are discussed. Karyotypic analysis may be of use in diagnostically difficult cases owing to the characteristic alterations in 18q11-13. A complete resection of lipoblastomas is feasible and advantageous with no need for a mutilating radical excision.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumor, accounting for less than 1% of childhood neoplasms. It begins from embryonic fat cells, with approximately 80% of cases occurring before the age of 3 and 40% occurring before the age of 1. Herein, we present an extremely rare case of gluteal-pelvic lipoblastoma in a 3.6-year-old girl successfully treated by excision of the tumour, with no evidence of clinical recurrence 3 months postoperatively.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma and its infiltrative variant lipoblastomatosis are rare adipose tissue tumours seen in infants and children. Many surgeons are unfamiliar with these uncommon lesions and hence they are suboptimally treated. We report a case series of six patients in our tertiary paediatric hospital. Cases were reviewed retrospectively with reference to demographics, investigations, diagnosis and their management. Lipoblastomas are easily misdiagnosed and excision before proper investigations may result in incomplete resection, recurrence and further potentially mutilating surgery.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma (LB) and lipoblastomatosis (LBS) are uncommon benign mesenchymal tumors of embryonal fat, occurring almost exclusively in infancy and early childhood. These fast-growing tumors have an excellent prognosis if properly treated. Eight consecutive children having pathologically demonstrated LB treated by the same surgical team were retrospectively reviewed. There were 5 boys and 3 girls between 7 to 36 months (median age 22 months). The localization of the tumors was on the thigh (1 case), abdomen (2 cases), axillary and pectoral region (1 case) paragluteal region (1 case), lumbar area (1 case), inguinal-scrotal (1 case), and in one case, presacral, gluteal and perirectal region (1 case). Five were focal and in 3 cases an infiltrative growth pattern was observed. One case exhibited a gross appearance resembling sacrococcygeal teratoma, with associated Dravet syndrome. No recurrence was noted in our series, after a mean follow-up of 28 months post operatory. Despite its rareness, LB must be kept in mind when diagnosing a rapidly growing fatty mass in children. Even when dealing with very large abdominal LB, complete surgical excision is possible, with an excellent prognosis. Due to the relatively high recurrence rate noted in the literature, particularly in LBS, follow-up is extremely important.
